Message-ID: <20020823135131.37079.qmail@web14604.mail.yahoo.com> Hi: Serendipity/synchronicity at work ... in 8-48, I wrote about the recent report on music downloads by Forrester Research, joking about its outrageous price of $495 for a 12-page report and lamenting my choice of careers (obviously, I should have gone into the lucrative music-research business). In the same issue, Harrison pointed us to the same report, and trumped my feeble attempts at adding value by throwing the whole enchilada online at: http://members.aol.com/hbsherwood/DownloadsSavetheMusicBus.pdf Now *that's* file sharing! Good one, HS. -Todd

If you are a rabid XTC FAN ( as I have been for half of my 44 years)and you want to do something nice for a band that's brought you joy...turn your friends and family onto this great music. BTW, interesting article 2 weeks ago in the NY Times about rap artists tiring of ranting and turning to rock roots! BTW2 - my college aged daughter has been turning me onto Bob Schneider and Jack Johnson, good stuff. Even better we're returning from our annual obligatory shopping trip to NYC and on the radio comes Dave Mathews doing Memory Hotel w/ the Stones, and I said "that sounds like your boy Dave" to which she says " no way, I'd know about it"... she was wrong!... Gotta love it when your ear is sharper than these young whippersnappers.

------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Aug 2002 12:58:40 -0600 From: Kirk.Gill@equifax.com Subject: Rocket Message-ID: <OFA603AE9E.1A144100-ON87256C1E.0053C8CD@fin.equifax.com> I've always loved that "Rocket" tune. It's in 7/4, I believe, and has a nice little keyboard hook. Although it's listed as being by XTC, I always figured it was an Andy tune. And Mr. Relph is right - the rest of the tunes on the disc are very spotty, but there's a couple of fun ones, particularly a song called "Skin," that is kind of a salsa track, with lyrics that are just, well, ODD ! I mean that, of course, in the nicest possible way. Mr. Brookings had quite an unusual spin on life in his poetry, and reading the lyric book for the cd is quite a treat, if you like that kind of thing. As to the whole bootleg situation, I do try to be responsible to the financial state of the XTC lads, and have done so by buying virtually everything they've put out. I always direct my friends who are looking for XTC music to the Idea Records site, and I hope that the boys are making a dollar or two off of that. But at the same time, if I'm presented with the opportunity to purchase an item that might rosy up my cheeks for a moment or two, I'm willing to buy it. I've bought a few XTC boots from e-bay, and while I'd rather have bought them from Andy and Colin (et al) themselves, they weren't making that product available, and I wanted it. Perhaps this kind of black market behaviour is a result of all my illicit purchases while in college. Or perhaps I'm just an unethical swine. I am, after all, an American, raised on tv, needful of instant gratification, and all that. Attempting to have a global conscience, much less any conscience at all, has always seemed a bit of a stretch. I doubt that A&C(et al) would be aggravated by my purchases, if they knew about them. As someone said in the last post, I'm sure they're more p.o.'ed at the seller who is making money off of them, not I, the loyal consumer. Of course, I could trade for illicit XTC product. But I have this to say on the trading front - you can only begin trading if you've already got something that someone wants. I don't know that I have any truly rare or inspiring XTC schtuff that any serious trader doesn't already have. Therefore, my ability to obtain from them the cooler, rarer stuff is limited. Thus I tend to resort to cold, hard cash....... k? "I'm Bugged"

Paul" <spaul@armstronglaw.com> Subject: bumper stickers Message-ID: <001401c24ae6$706f21a0$041e120a@STEVEN> I just wanted to say over the chalk-waves that I received my bumper stickers from all-around good guy Jamie Lowe. I gave a green bumper-sticker to each (both) of my kids to proudly display on their books or backpacks at school and have put one of each sticker on my car to show my extreme fanatacism!!! A big "shout out" to Jamie -- thanks. Since I'm here I would also like to ask your collective advice on what you recommend for someone interested in Yazbek. I haven't heard much of his work, but what I have heard I like. I recently received a compilation CD that included a track with a Yazbek and Andy Partridge collaboration. Can't think of the name right now and don't have the CD with me. Any recommendations? Steven Paul Salt Lake City, Utah

Message-ID: <F50Ty9CMdZpDsiIWeTl000067e3@hotmail.com> Costello? The Hives/Strokes? Wilco? No my dear Chalkheads, Dolly Parton's "Halos and Horns" is indeed the finest 'New Album' of the year! Hardcore hillbillies may beg to differ with me but I have more teeth than them! To be honest, ever since my mother stopped breast feeding me I've wanted to crawl into Dolly's arms and "yearn to breathe free"! But that's a story for another day! Tonight I'd rather explain the 'other' reason why 'Halos' is the best album of the year. To start with, Dolly jumps right into it with a brand new set of 'Ginzu' knives! WTF? Dolly's voice can cut enough tin cams to build a homeless shelter and STILL slice Tomatoes 'paper thin'. Next comes the music. The title track will simply rip the erogenous zones out of Woman and Man alike. Complimented by an exquisite recor- ding and a most excellent group of musicians, Dolly will demand your undivided attention. Then she will wink at you and you will understand... ...this is true submission to the devine! XTC content: Dem's sum dam fine chalkhills baby!

Message-ID: <001101c24b9b$84292be0$19a2fea9@Bullock> Just before anyone else gets involved here, the comments that Wes made after my last posting (with regard to the ongoing debate over boots) wer well intentioned, well informed and well known to me before the last Chalkhills update appeared. Wes and I are old friends, and a little earnest debate and slight differece of opinion will not harm that. Much love to all of you, waiting to 'Breathe More Easily' (ahh, does anybody here remember the TUNES ads of the 1970's and 1980's?) Darryl PS - what on earth is the difference between trading CDs and trading tapes?

Want to recreate that Apple Venus sound? The frantic near-flamenco that rounds off I'd Like That? That chink-chink-chink-chink at the start of Church of Women? Then hurry on down to your local IKEA (branches in 39 countries, and counting). There you can buy a half-size Chinese Spanish guitar, just like the one that Holly Partridge "lent" her Dad for the duration of the AV epic. Hold down that G chord, and start strumming. You're almost there in Andy's shed. And here's the best bit: it'll cost you a precisely 12 pounds sterling ($18 US). I played around with one yesterday. Adorable. It may be the best-finished bit of furniture in the whole place. What's more, you don9t have to assemble it yourself, and it hasn't got any parts missing. Can't remember what it's called, probably Strvnt, Kvilp, Lard, or something like that. It's the perfect early Christmas present -- for yourself. After all, it's nearly September. Just try not to think too much about what a Chinese guitar-maker takes home these days. John Morrish "Nothing is more beautiful than a guitar, save perhaps one that costs twelve quid"

------------------------------ Date: Thu, 29 Aug 2002 10:38:40 -0500 From: Brown <i.sundog@verizon.net> Subject: The Shirt Off His Back Message-ID: <20020829153840.SIRT8715.out008.verizon.net@darkstar> Direct from XTC Idea Records: If you would like to own a couple of pieces of XTC (or Dukes) clothing, well now you can. Andy has raided his wardrobe and has offered up two Psychedelic Shirts for a charity auction. The two shirts were bought in Londons Carnaby Street in 1983, during the mixing of the Mummer album, and were worn on many occasions, including XTC photo shoots, the Dukes `Mole' video and in his private life. We'll open up a special topic in the forum enabling you to cast your bids and name the charity of your choice. For more details see the Auction section in the forum. (http://www.xtcidearecords.co.uk/chatter/chatter_1.htm) Who knows, you may become the owner of these worn wonders, possesor of these two frayed fantasies, as well as doing a good deed. Feel free to bid as many times as you like and go as high as you want. Please place you bids in # pounds sterling. We will close the bidding on 30/9/02 and the highest bidder will then be contacted through the forum message system with details for arranging payment. The shirts will come with a handwritten letter of authentication from Andy. If you have any questions please email us: enquiries@xtcidearecords.co.uk To find out more about all things XTC, visit the official Web site at: http://www.xtcidearecords.co.uk The latest news items include Monkey Business - Andy has started a label, called Ape, so that he can bring out as many side projects as he likes, without gambling any of Colins money. Ape stands for Andy Partridge Experiments or Andy Partridge Editions (or any one of a thousand connotations of the letter E really !) There are 14 projects planned for release so far, so stay tuned. Orpheus Being Us - One of the many Ape projects we can confirm, is a series of recordings Andy and Peter Blegvad have been working on since 1990. Titled `Sparagmos', this mini album (or fat ep) is a selection of poetry and soundscapes based on the adventures of a modern day Orpheus.
