Hello Chalksters:

Just a note to say that a nice homage to Andy's songwriting can be found on
the latest (wonderful) CD by The Bears, Car Caught Fire. Track 10 is
drummer Chris Arduser's "Safe in Hell"; and it's a terrific nod to
Mummer/English Settlement-era Andy. The main refrain sounds least
Andy-like, but every other section of the song is a dead ringer, in melody,
chord changes, and instrumentation. I had the pleasure of seeing the Bears
perform last Sunday night at the Mercury Lounge in NYC, and their show was a
stunner; with jaw-dropping guitaristics from Messrs Belew and Fetters, and
catchy, melodic songwriting throughout; not to mention a gleefully sinister
cover of King Crimson's "Red." The new CD is highly recommended, IMHO, and
can be gotten by mail order only on the Bears' Web site:

Cheers,

Frank

I disagree, but while I disagree, I will agree it is a matter of
interpretation. Yes, 30 or so of those 41 tracks have been released
in some form. For example, "Yacht Dance" was previously released on
"English Settlement". However, and this is where I disagree, *this
version* of "Yacht Dance", a live version recorded on "Ye Olde Greye
Whistle Teste" in 1982, has never been released.

These particular versions of these 41 songs, whether they be live
recordings, home demos, unused single recordings, album outtakes, or
whatever, have never been released to the public. Yes, some of them
are available on bootlegs, many of them have been traded on
nth-generation cassettes or CDRs, or been made available as MP3s on
Napster and the like. But my hope is that the quality of the
recordings on "Coat of Many Cupboards" will be superior to any of
those previously available versions. And it is my belief that many of
these specific recordings have never been available in any form.

One thing I am looking forward to is having some of these recordings
on CD, even though they were previously released on singles or
compilations. For example, the "XTC Home Demos" from the B-side of
"The Meeting Place" 12-incher, the live "Traffic Light Rock" from the
"Record Mirror" promo single, etc. I am a little disappointed that
the B-sides from the "Farmboy's Wages" single are not included, but
hey, so it goes.

So, as Bugs Bunny says, "Unlax, Doc."

Well, funny you should say that Paul . . . I just got off the phone with

All we need now Mariah Carey to provide the hot air to inflate it and we

It seems we can now pre-order "Coat Of Many Cupboards" in the boutique.
However, I find it strange that my credit card is charged RIGHT now
considering the cds will be shipped at the end of March...Is this normal
procedure ? I buy a lot of cds over the Net and everytime I pre-order
stuff, my credit card is ONLY being charged on shipment day...Anyone ?

Well there's also "Disque Bleu", which makes a total
of three French words so far, but not yet a single sentence
a la "Michelle"...

PS : From what I gather from interviews of the French band,
Andy Partridge didn't answer the proposal of "L'Affaire Louis
Trio" to work with them, but Colin Moulding did (on "L'Homme

Relphster and the Goobernauts,

I just ordered my autographed version of "A Coat of Many Cupboards" from the
Idea Records website. The total cost was #39.13 which, according to the
Universal Currency Converter, works out to approximately $55.52 U.S.
dollars. The price for "Coat..." on Amazon.com is $56.98, without shipping.
Therefore, it looks as if it's a bit of a better deal for those of us on the
wrong side of the pond to order from the XTC site: not only do we save a few
bucks, but we get autographs thrown in, too!

Speaking of ordering new music through the web, Bob Mould's new album,
"Modulate," is available through the Granary Music website:

I haven't heard anything at all about it, but I'm anxious anyway. (Did you
know that Bob took a stint as a writer for the WWF?) "I Hate Alternative
Rock" (off of "Bob Mould") is a great song.

Waiting for someone to push the damn pedals on the season cycle,
-Ben

I just got a message from Idea Records XTC site saying that you can
pre-order an autographed copy of, "A Coat of Many Colours". I just ordered
it, and it's actually a little cheaper than the Amazon.com's rate. Just go
to http://www.xtcidearecords.co.uk, and go to the Boutique portion to check
out the details.

XTC spotting - My wife and I were in Naturewood, and upscale furniture store
in Sacramento, when over the music the strains of "Mayor of Simpleton" could
be heard. We began jumping up and down with joy on the expensive furniture.

A little late, but here is my best of 2001. I had to buy and listen to a
number of previous recommendations before I could finalize my list. I
regret that I could not add any Mike Keneally to my list. Wooden Smoke is a
2002 release, and Dancing is a 2000 release, but I have been listening to
both of these a lot lately. What a talent! Thanks to the listers who
recommended him. I am a big Zappa fan and he really fills that void.
Here's my choices for 2001:

RECORDS
1.. Sigur Ros - Agaetis Byrjun
2.. Midnight Oil - The Real Thing
3.. Ben Folds - Rockin' The Suburbs
4.. Bob Marley & The Wailers - Exodus (Deluxe Edition)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't most box sets
mainly just repackagings of album tracks anyway, with
a few odd live recordings or perhaps one or two new
tracks thrown in? I'll admit I don't buy them often
(if at all), but it seems to me that they usually
consist of stuff that a completist would have already.
At least, most of the ones I've considered buying
always seem to be that way. I seem to remember
reading somewhere that CoMC would be a mixture of
demos, outtakes, live tracks AND a few of Andy and
Colin's favorite XTC songs, I'm presuming with some
kind of accompanying verbiage to explain their reasons
why, their fondness for such-and-such, anecdotes, etc.

That said, I think CoMC is going to be pretty
introspective, at least I'm assuming it will be. (is
anything they do ever *not* so?) I'm looking forward
to getting it, if for no other reason than I'm a
complete sucker for packaging. I mean, the word
"booklet" just makes me gooey.

Of course, Fuzzy Warbles is going to be the real
prize...what better way to reaffirm the brilliance of
this band then to listen to a complilation of the
tracks that *didn't* make the cut? Yikes. When's
that coming out again?!

Aaron.

Hi faux oops folks,
Lest anyone take Dunks' swipe at French unrockability too seriously, I
thought I should defend my countrypeople's honour and suggest that the
French are leading the new (mainly commercial) wave of dance electronica
and have been for some time now!

Names for your consideration from the last 5 years or so (I apologise for
omissions, these are from personal sampling experience only, and therefore
can only scratch the surface):

Cassius, Daft Punk, Air, Modjo, MC Solaar, Dimitri From Paris, Superman
Lovers, Stardust, Rinocerose, Alex Gopher, Thomas Bangalter, Etienne De
Crecy, St Germain (AKA Ludovic Navarre), Bob Sinclair, Alan Braxe, Les
Rythmes Digitales, Troublemakers.

Some of these undoubtedly rock. Some funk. Some even groove (believe it or
not...I'm walkin' on air...). It's not all brilliant, but tucked among the
folds is some music I would prefer not to live without (Gopher,
Troublemakers, Solaar).

So there!

Cheers,
Seb

EMI to Close CD Manufacturing Plant
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

LONDON (AP) -- EMI Group PLC will close its compact disc manufacturing plant
in southern England and transfer production to its other European operation
in the Netherlands, the recording giant said Friday.

The company said the closure of the plant in Swindon, which employs 192
people, was due to ``overcapacity in the CD manufacturing industry'' and
would lead to substantial cost savings.
