I got Disco Volante first, and I loved it... although I'm definitely not
always in the mood for it. It's perhaps the most unlistenable album
ever... but in a strangely good way. Unique.
Anyway, I object to calling Mr. Bungle a side project. Mike Patton
formed Mr. Bungle long before joining Faith No More, and only on the
condition that he could stay with his original band.

Oh, and on the subject of Wardance:
I actually like this song. Always have, always will. Ha ha. :p

A couple of days ago I found out that I now get VH1 Classic, and I love
the channel. These next two questions are for those who get it.

Do they ever play any XTC?
If yes, then what videos have they played in the past?

So far they've played a LOT of videos I haven't seen in a long time.
Like today I saw "Radio, Radio" by Elvis Costello, and I haven't seen
that one since I have no clue when.
VH1 Classic is a great distraction to what's going on with the world.

Which brings to mind the similar situation this weekend in the locker
room, when a couple of guys were talking about allowing themselves to
be overworked. I chimed in, "well, like the song says, people will
always wipe their feet on anything with welcome written on it".

They laughed & agreed, but I could tell they had NO effing clue what
song I was referring to.

Also, Duncan mentioned BF's "Rocking The Suburbs", and I
wholeheartedly agree. Along with Amnesiac & Old Ramon by The Red House
Painters, it's one that I can't get enough of. But since he lost two
band members, shouldn't he call himself "Ben Folds Three"?

Hello folks. It's been a long time since I've posted
here. Hmm, feels nice to be back! In the meantime
I've been working, playing in a band, drinking
Jennings, walking in the lake district and generally
tried to not go mad in london! Muswell Hill where I
live isn't bad but there are major areas that are...

As for War Dance, I never really got into it. I didnt
like the production of it at all. Am going to track
down that Tony Banks solo album though after a
recommendation from a fellow chalker!

Still trying to justify which of the rereleases to
plump for. Probably ES and Mummer.

On other points...The band Im in looks like folding
(not as in Ben Folding mind..) and I was just
wondering if there's anyone out there that plays in
the London area? I play bass and sing a bit. I'm not
thinking of anything too serious though!

Chalkers,

I know you're probably sick of me recommending Death Cab for Cutie, but
they've just released a new album and it's their best yet. Go to the Barsuk
Records site to check it out:

They're hard to describe, so go download some tunes and let the music speak
for itself. The best track from the new album, "The Photo Album," is
probably "I Was a Kaleidoscope." The best tracks from their last album
(also a fantastic work), "We Have the Facts and We're Voting Yes," are
"Title Track" and "Lowell, MA." (These are, of course, my humblest
opinions.)

Enjoy!

In a message dated 10/13/01 7:25:08 PM Pacific Daylight Time, someone writes:

Actually I've had pretty good luck with Barnes and Noble. If a title I wanted
was out of stock (including returns) they always let me apply it to a gift
card. I believe that White Music may (possibly) be out of stock because
their suppliers only order certain product when the request reaches a certain
amount. I had a similar problem ordering Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger for
my sons to watch (it's a fun -- although badly acted movie with the exception
of the marvelous Patrick Troughton).

It was readily available everywhere else. The Wherehouse has much, much worse
problems ordering stuff. I walked in there a couple of months back to buy the
new David Bryne CD (they had run out at Borders) and was shocked to find that
they didn't carry it and didn't even have it in their data base. If you're
willing to spend the extra money I believe ( could be wrong here) they can
order the remastered version (assuming you had purchased the older version).

In other news---I love Suzanne Vega's new album. It's nice to see her always
trying something new. Clearly she and Rupert got on fairly well otherwise she
would have sucked the guy. The reverb on the vocals--it's a Hine trademark if
I'm not mistaken (I believe he used it alot with The Fixx). His work with The
Tom Tom Club, Duncan Sheik, The Waterboys and others is always sonically
interesting (even if the artist isn't). Hine began as a recording artist and
his 1981 album Immunity is terrific (if you can find it).

Personally I have to give credit for Suzanne not going with the safe choice
(in this case the tremendously talented Jon Brion) and trying someone a
little outside her "safe" zone. Give it time to grow on you.

Hey kids-

Unless I'm mistaken, Mr. Hine produced Duncan Sheik's first 2 cd's, as
well as the Fixx, Howard Jones and other new wavers in the 80's...

He also did a few songs that are actually pretty cool as a solo artist
in the classic 80's Cusack vehicle "Better Off Dead". Remember the
song "Shine" that played while John and "that hottie actress who
always seemed to play a French chick in the 80's whose name completely
escapes me at the moment" were bonding while skiing? That was Rupert
Hine.

Think of him what you will, but please don't confuse him with Rupert
Holmes...

See ya- Jude

P.S. A few years back, someone here mentioned having a French version
of the Three O'Clock's "Sixteen Tambourines" cd with different tracks
on it. If you're still out there, please send me a note off list-
thanks!!!

Although "Mighty Joe Moon" is my favorite album of theirs, it is not their

Hello fellow chalkers!

So, I have sensed (maybe its just me) over the last few months that "Mummer"
is not one of the favorites when talking XTC. "Mummer" has become my #2
album by the 4 from Swindon-- no its 3-- wait, dammit its only 2 now!
Anyways, I have always loved this album ever since I was first turned onto
the band in 1988. This is one of the first ones I got after "Skylarking"
and it has forever remained dear to me. I also favor the cd with the bonus
tracks put in the middle. "Mummer" is not "Mummer" without the extra guts
in the middle. I could never think of this album without thinking of the
chorus on 'Jump' or the lyrically witty 'Desert Island'.

Now, I will say that in reading what everyone has said about "Nonsuch"
lately-- I have given it repeated listenings to see what I had missed on
previous spins, and I have finally seen the beauty of it. "Nonsuch" is a
great record. I had shelved it for so long and for various reasons (one of
which was I hated the harmonica on 'The Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead'-- yeah,
I know its a stupid reason but it really irritated me) that I had really not
given it another chance to be anything but part of my ever-growing XTC
collection. NO MORE will "Nonsuch" be relegated to the "I have it in the
collection only status"! It shall be played and heard by all!! (feeling
punchy, as its a little late for me)

Hope all is going well with everyone around the world.
Best regards and have a safe All Hallows Eve!

Chalkers,

On this, the month that marks my six year anniversary of my marriage to
Chalkhills, I thought I'd make a list of some of the bands that I've been
exposed to by means of this list (either through direct list discussion or
by personal recommendations from Chalkheads). The number in parenthesis
next to the band/singer denotes the number of CDs I currently own by that
band/singer (and this list is, of course, a partial one that does not
include burned CDs of demos, outtakes, etc.):

Joan Armatrading (2), Belle & Sebastian (4), Blur (6), The Bogmen (1), Billy
Bragg (4), Grant Lee Buffalo (5), David Byrne/Talking Heads (12), Elvis
Costello (19), Echo and the Bunnymen (1), Jason Falkner/Jellyfish (5), Robyn
Hitchcock/Soft Boys (21), Joe Jackson (2), Freedy Johnston (7), The Judybats
(2), Kirsty MacColl (4), Morrissey/Smiths (30), Martin Newell/Cleaners from
Venus (3), Sam Phillips (2), Prefab Sprout (4), Sugar/Bob Mould/Husker Du
(15), and, of course, XTC (40).

That's 189 CDs at approximately $12 a piece...which is approximately $2,700
that Chalkhills has inadvertantly drawn from my pockets over the past six
years. John Relph, I'm waiting for my check...! ;-)

SCREAMS! Rook! Rook! I *AM* the Rook!

                  Ack!

        You didn't read my Book!

                  Ack!

                 (Ack)

LOOK OUT! LOOK OUT! LOOK OUT!

That DAMN ROOK is gonna make you read his
stinkin' BOOK! And if you don't tell the ROOK
you love the BOOK, the ROOK will SNAP the BOOK
   in your FACE!

Then your nose will be squashed and become over
six inches long! It will hang down to your naval

They will dance and jump and spin about your face.
All the while, they will chant...

LOOK! LOOK! Your nose was squashed in a BOOK!

And all you had to do was say...

"ROOK! ROOK! I've read your BOOK! It's the BEST BOOK
  I've ever read!"

But no! You would rather go through life with a six

              ROOK! ROOK!

              LOOK! LOOK!

         We didn't read the BOOK!

   Well, if I was you....

                ACK!

...I'd read the damn BOOK by the ROOK!
