And yes I know tons of the rest of you will find flaws with my statement and normally I respect your opinions but frankly I don't want to hear em at the moment. Husker Du ROCK! HARD! . Sugar was a much better than average band but lets face it it was still Bob with two hired guns to back him up just as Nova Mob provided the same platform for Grant Hart, but both bands only had one great songwriter, Husker had 2, AND they didn't like each other, so like two high school boys trying to impress the head cheerleader (bad analogy given Bobs sexuality I know) they constantly over the course of a decade tried to outdo one another both on record and on stage. The Huskers are nothing short of astounding! To even suggest that Sugar somehow eclipses the brilliance of Husker is just wrong. Just plain wrong. Now go listen to "Diane" at maximum volume for an hour for your punishment. Mole PS: Bob high fived me at the end of a show once too. Yeah, I know I'm cool. ;) PPS: So John what is the skinny with the website can we all contribute (I would at least) to buy some space somewhere to house it? Seriously, While I like much of the Dukes album (and still think that Vanishing Girl should have been the A side of the single not You're A Good Man Albert Brown), Terry and The Lovemen has always been my fav Xtc side project (they only recorded one song and a great one at that. I felt that the Dukes joke went on a bit too long although, again, I like much more of the second album than the first but that's just me). The whole WTC attack is indeed horrible. I'm reminded of Andy's demo Terrorism. I ended up driving back across the US like a lot of folks. It allowed me much time to reflect on the state of the world and the many idiots with guns (and planes) that live among us. RIP Chalkhills--John you did a great service to the Xtc community. Thanks! It was a pleasure to (briefly) meet you when Andy came to San Francisco many moons ago. Hopefully Chalkhills will resurface in some form somewhere along the line. It would be a pity for such a great fan site to disappear. Currently in the CD player (not that it matters) absolutely nothing by XTC! Scary, I know, but I've been listening to lots of other stuff including early Elton John, the latest John Hiatt and the Buffalo Springfield Box Set. I can't wait for Suzanne Vega's latest CD. Such trivial matters make the world go round and make it a bit easier to deal with tragedy.

No fluff this time around. Just observations. Like all, I have strong emotions (and many thoughts) of the recent national events. A reminder, this is no tragedy, this is an atrocity. I lost a friend. I lost my cool. But I gained an appreciation and a pride about what our national identity really is. As Jon Stewart put it very candidly last night, "the dream realized." Where we are now judged not by the color of our skin but the content of our character. Hold on this fact. Hold on to each other. And hold on to the emotion of terror that this evil has created. Use it. Let it let you relish every crumb that we take for granted. I made a mix tape. A mix of mostly xtc, police and kevin gilbert tunes. Strangely enough, the paranoia that riddled a great deal of that music from the waning days of the cold war, rings painfully true now. I urge you to revisit it. Particularly "Walking in your footsteps" by the police, "All fall down," by K Gilbert and (say it isnt so) "This World Over" by the boys. God bless. At least, somebody bless. I'm sure you've seen the reports of ancient life on Earth crawling out of a sea of soupy sales? Seems they were tired of eating Plankton and decided a 'tossed salad' with Italian dressing was in order. Well, as you can imagine, it wasn't long after this they all decided a double meat cheese burger with scalded potatoes and a Coke would go down even better. The whales were appalled to see their former sea mates attack the dirt beasts (and friendly plants) and decided, "if we must eat something, let it be the Plankton as they are the least amongst us" This of course pissed off the Plankton no end but, even they had to admit "we're pretty dumb, plentiful and, pre salted!" And so the whales actually "grew fins" and walked back into the ocean. They frolicked, body surfed, and freaked out the tourists when they showed them exactly what a BLOW HOLE is for! Ok, I made some of this stuff up but! I *did* hear that scientific evidence suggests whales *may* have walked on dirt at one time. For the record, Finoids prefer "fresh water Plankton". Speaking of which, it's a fantastic album. It's true I couldn't bring myself to listen to it the day it came out(Sept. 11). Something seemed wrong about listening to such a happy album at such a sad time, but once I did it really proved to be such a welcome pick-me-up. It would probably still be the only album in my CD player if Tori Amos' newest album of song covers hadn't come out this week. It has some really good covers on it. Unfortunately it also includes possibly the worst song I've ever heard her perform, a horrendous version of "Happiness is a warm gun". Still I couldn't help imagining Tori including an XTC song. My vote would be for "another sattelite", I think she could really bring something interesting to the song. Jeff

His primary band is the Mekons, but he also spends a lot of time as one of the Waco Bros. In the '80's he was in The Three Johns, and there are several other bands I'm forgetting. In the another breath, my thoughts and well wishes are with those who have been affected by this tragedy by any tangible amount, and also with those who will be affected in days to come. That being said, a small beam of light came into my evening last night at the TGIFridays bar last night. I heard 'Playground' over the Musak-type system playing in there. Brought a smile to my face and a realization of how true some words can ring. Then an even more moving experience. The two-hour tribute special on television that was broadcast on every major network and cable channel. What a monumental effort and coming together! OK, maybe one word comes to mind. Pride. The scheme is that twelve people agree to make a cdr compilation once a year and send it to the others on the list. Each and every month for eleven months you get a new compilation. Then once a year you have to make a compilation and send it to the other 11 people on the list. If you are interested in joining the cdr of the month club e-mail me off list. Currently, there are two of us, John Bartlett of Colchester, UK and me in Chicago. There are no rules to speak of other than we are all interested in POP music, and you must have access to a cd burner, post office, etc, etc. The point is to enlighten, entertain, enjoy and explore new music from a different perspective... Kirwan, Fleetwood, and McVie in raunchy reworkings and parodies of early rock and roll favorites. In 1969, Earl Vince & the Valiants recorded an original composition, the blissfully ungrammatical "Somebody's Gonna Get Their Head Kicked In Tonight," which was covered in joyous uptempo abandon by a short-lived Scottish party-punk combo called the Rezillos in the remarkably fecund 1977-'78 time frame which also produced XTC. Both versions of "Somebody" are available on CD: the original on Vol. 1 of *The Immediate Singles Collection* (Immediate/Sony Music Special Projects, 1991), and the cover on *Can't Stand the Rezillos: The (Almost) Complete Rezillos* (Sire/Warner Bros., 1993). I feel blessed that he is able to tour, and he has seemed more comfortable each time. As a high schooler I naively pooh-poohed the Beach Boys, but now I couldn't live without Brian's songs. As to his shows, I know a good deal of the credit goes to his amazing band, but I found the experience unforgettable. april :-)
