They also earn mechanical royalties (I believe that's what they're called) from actual, physical disks sold. I believe that's what's at issue: how, or whether, to compensate Our Lads for MP3s distributed. It appears to me from the discussion in the recent past that those rabidly seeking Wasp Star out on Napster seem to have every intention of generating those royalties for Our Lads once the album actually appears in stores. So at the moment, the existence of MP3 versions of Wasp Star is devalued-- it seems to have little worth other than as promotion-- in much the same way that countless Deadheads were weaned on tape trading, and fans of current groups like Bela Fleck and the Flecktones and of course Dave Matthews Band. No matter how much we piss and moan about their existence, there's always going to be some leech trying to get around the system, with his/her cop-out that music should be free, yada, yada, yada; (s)he's already lost. Tape trading and MP3 trading could potentially hurt XTC a little-- but it could potentially help them a lot, too. So it's a crapshoot no matter which way you look at it. My question is, can the potential for all that exposure possibly burn XTC any more than they've been burnt by Virgin? This whole discussion amuses the hell out of me. Remember the days before we didn't have the Net as an immediate distribution medium? Whatever happened to waiting patiently? What are we trying to prove? Have we as a culture gotten so spoiled by having everything available to us instantaneously that we've forgotten how delicious anticipation can be? It's almost like demanding Frank Lloyd Wright's various models of Fallingwater in addition to the house itself, or crawling through Charles Schulz's trash to find the sketches for each Peanuts strip-- as if the final product isn't its own justification. I guess if Andy and/or Colin want to expose their creative process to the public, that's one thing. Fripp and his current crop of Crimsos are keeping online diaries, for Lord's sake. But I'd worry if that wasn't their intention-- and I'd worry if they wanted to take it private again, because now Pandora's box is open, innit? Me, I don't want to hear Wasp Star any before I see it in the racks at Borders. But I would be lying if I wasn't tempted to seek out those damn MP3s from time to time. Darn that temptation! Also, if any guitarist or bassist out there has any other songs they would recommend that are easy to learn, let me know. I barely know 6 cords at this point and want to learn transitions better. By the way, before telling people to "fuck off" because they said something about reviews, read my comment on my original post about reviewers. I love to hear what people have to say. Its actually making my anticipation grow. The only thing I did not like is when people said it sucked without listening to it for a while. I think people should listen to it at least a few times before reviewing it. There are so many albums, even groups for that matter that I have hated the first time I heard them. One for example was this song, "Don't Lets Start." by this group They Might Be Giants. I thought "are they trying to be funny or do they really suck that bad?" The next day, after hearing it for the second time I said "god, they are brilliant" and they have been one of my top 5 bands of all time ever since. So, first impressions don't always mean anything. How many times did any of you guys date someone that you thought was so great, only finding out later they were complete wankers (trying to use that English slang now aye!) Really, before downing the album, I just want you guys to listen to it a few times. I know opinions vary, but I don't understand how some people can say "this is not XTC." and completely ridicule the new album. If its at least 1/2 as good as Nonsuch of AV1, I will be impressed.

Do you deliberately not read anything in any source before you buy anything? I read as many reviews as I can because radio is really awful regarding playing new things that I might enjoy, so I rely on the written word and opinions of people like those on this list to help me find stuff I might like. How else is there to do it? Let me present a scenario: a reviewer in a magazine might write something like "This band plays infectious power pop that reminds one of XTC or Jellyfish. You'll love the energy that the band exudes, and their melodies are great. In the song XYZ, listen for the guitar break because it will make you smile." Now, that's not too much different from what people write here in their posts. How could you possibly get a preconceived notion about the album that is so strong that it would ruin it for you the first time you hear it for real? Geez, if anything, that's the kind of review that makes me think, "I might just have to go buy that album because I probably will like it". A few points to touch on here, the digests are coming fast & furious, and
I'm at work so I can't really do full posts for everything that has grabbed
my attention...
1. With the posts from Wes and Jim (among others) concerning being told
to shut up about their impressions of Wasp Star, I just have to say again to
all the "anti-spoiler" people: Shut up your shut ups! You CAN'T spoil an
album by writing about it! It's just that simple! I realize that plenty of
other people have also weighed in with all sorts of analogies as to why this
is the case (why an album's not like a movie, a book, or a slice of
cheesecake, etc.), but the tone of discouragement coming from the people
who've been slapped for daring to share their enthusiasm just makes me mad.
NO AMOUNT OF REVIEWING IS GOING TO SPOIL THE ALBUM! It's that simple. To
those of you who've heard it: tell all! I want to know! As far as I'm
concerned it can only enhance my enjoyment once the actual album is in my
trembling hands. To those of you who said shut up in the first place: I'm
sorry, maybe you really feel this way, but I just can't relate at all (like
someone saying "I hate chocolate" or "orgasms are no fun at all").
2. This whole RSM business. I wrote a long and angry post about his
post in 6-72, but pulled it for fear of being flamed by his admirers merely
for daring. All I'm going to say is: Mr. Moore, if nothing inspires your
posts but complete and utter contempt for everyone on the list, why do you
even bother? Please note that that was a question, it was not a piece of
advice. You seem to have confused the two in your "reply" to Todd's
question. (This is nothing like people overreacting to Dom's swearing, etc.;
he was just taking the piss in a way that some people didn't quite get. If
you were just doing the same, you'd have to take that extra step of actually
being funny. What you're doing is much more along the lines of holding us
all down and farting in our collective face.) That line that ended "Ah, the
fans" seems to say that such fannish chatter doesn't belong on... a mailing
list for fans? If you're sick of that kind of thing... well why knowingly
come to the wrong place just to spit and sneer at everyone? Without even
compensating by making your posts amusing or interesting? And if you think
that you're somehow standing up for Dave Gregory, well it seems to me that
the way that you're doing it is totally misguided. He still has plenty of
fans here, but trying to make them think that they're somehow obligated to
hate the new album is just bullshit. And if DavidOh wasn't allowed to get
away with annoying pseudo-phonetic wank spelling, why should anyone else?
3. To Tyler Hewitt: thanks for the link to the MWML preview (I was
wondering when one of these would finally appear; didn't we get that "I'd
Like That" preview further ahead of time with the last album?). This is one
of only two songs that I hadn't heard the demo for ("In Another Life" is the
other), and the people who are saying it's classic XTC & should be a hit
are... absolutely spot on! If this is any indication, the complaints about
the guitar sound are crap. Can't seem to download it though: trying to "save
as" just leaves you with a 1kb bogus shortcut file. Ah, well. I consider
playing music on computer a relatively crappy listening experience anyway.
4. Clapton. ZZZZ, indeed. It's a real pity that that soporific
unplugged version of "Layla" went over so well, seeing as it seemed to
inspire him to make every song since then sound as much like it as possible.
He should go back to doing guest solos on other people's albums.
5. Somebody mentioned the Who. I like them, in spite of having an
acquaintance in high school who was way into them (in that way that can make
you hate just about anything). Still think "Sell Out" is their best album,
"Tommy" isn't bad as long as you're not naive enough to take it seriously,
but after that... I guess it's the "blossoming" of Daltrey's voice that
starts to put me off after a while. Who's Next is a great album, but that
big "Yeeaaahhh!" in "Won't Get Fooled Again" marks the point where my
enthusiasm for this band starts to cool... Also, Townshend said some very
silly things in later interviews (pointless hand-wringing about the
irresponsibility of "Tommy's" message - which he apparently tried to "fix"
in that ludicrous Broadway version, etc.).
6. What's this Wes is saying about Dom being censored? Did I miss
something?
7. I have many friends who like prog & other technique-wank music, and
I'm not trying to slag (if someone's really into something, and makes an
effort to get into something more than just what they're spoon-fed by radio,
I have nothing but respect for them. Whether it's prog, hardcore, metal,
ambient, Tuvan throat singing or whatever, that still puts you higher in my
estimation than someone who plunks down their credit card in the record
store and asks for a quarter pound of hits).
That's all for now. I have an actual (hopefully) constructive idea that I'd
like to propose next time...

If someone is selling a bootleg on ebay, that is wrong. But lets say I buy a copy of the promo in the store for $30 just to hear it and I put it on ebay to get my money back, I don't control how high bidders go. Ebay is not always fair, I agree with that. In fact, most sellers are scammers and assholes in my opinion (but I have met some really cool sellers and bidders on this list). Some put really high prices on things and that is unfair. HOWEVER, some sellers, like myself, put a fair price on everything. When I sell CD's, I have a standard rate of $6.99. I have lost SO much money selling CD's I have spent $10 or more on! At the same time, I have gained money for CD's I spent $5 on and sold for $20. Its a win/lose situation. I mostly sell on ebay, because I buy on ebay. I sold a rare XTC CD a few months ago that went for $3. I sold the same CD a few weeks after that went for $24. I buy lots of things and I sell the rest to be able to afford to get the stuff I want. If I were to buy Wasp Star (I wont because I want to wait!!!) I would listen to it once and sell it on ebay. There is nothing wrong with that at all. What is wrong though is when people lie and sell bootlegs on ebay. I recently spent a good amount of money for something to later find out it was a bootleg. The seller gave NO indication that the item was a bootleg. Anyway, just thought I would bring that up. There is a big difference from copying something and sending it to 100's or thousands of people and selling a promo on ebay. Speaking of XTC, I have a promo copy of Dear God w/Toys and its in MINT condition. I would like to trade with anyone interested on this list. Any offers, please email me.

I'm sure that there are a number of us (like myself) who are kicking ourselves over the fact that they put off subscribing until it's too late. The idea is: has anyone approached them with the idea of putting out a one-shot "Best of", perhaps solicited through Chalkhills? This way, their efforts over the years would not be forgotten, people who came in too late would get a glimpse of material that is rapidly becoming legendary to XTC fans, and they could make a modest return on their labour-of-love of the past several years. The "Best of" could be selected as a combination of the Dix's favourites, band member favourites (present and former) & maybe faves of long time subscribers. I'm sure that this would go over very well; I've never seen a copy of L.E., can't really afford those e-bay prices (which don't go to either the Dixes or the band anyway), and it seems buying this would be like a way to pay them back for their efforts (not that LE was anything but a labour of love), especially for those of us who were too late. It certainly seems fairer to them than this stuff getting scanned onto a web site someday (which seems more than likely, eventually). As one of the reasons for shutting down was that they couldn't compete with Chalkhills on the "timely news" front, this would be a great way to ensure that the better non-news articles and interviews, etc. would be preserved and enjoyed by more people. I'm certainly not saying that this is anything that the Dixes are obligated to do or anything like that & I know that they've already put in plenty of hard work over the years (though I'm also sure there'd be no shortage of volunteers and suggestions as to what should be included) - it really is a suggestion made with the best intentions in mind. So -anyone like the idea? Anyone who knows Pete and June Dix have any idea if they're likely to be receptive? We'd all buy such a thing, am I right? Let me know... Ed K.
