>>>If XTC can just hold out until the end of this decade, the 80's will once
again be fashionable completing the 30-year cycle <<<

Was it really that long ago? Yes, we have lived through the disco revival
in the 90's (didn't those people learn anything the first time around?) the
grunge fad, which to me is almost like 70's rock. Now its time to relive
the 80's (just not in the political hell we went through back then).

As long as "I Ran" stays off the radio, I will be swell. I can handle
"Kajagoogoo" somewhat (well, as much as I could handle "Dead Or Alive"), but
don't ask me to sit here and listen to "Bow Wow Wow" please, unless they
ditch the little lady and change their name to the Ants with Adam doing the
singing. Of course, I will wholeheartedly accept a nice comeback from
"Talking Heads" or "Big Country," just please don't start playing "Malcolm
McClarren" attempting to do disco or "Sid Viscous" attempting to do music.

Bring back Nerf (well, I'm sure its still around!) $2.50 movie tickets and
concerts that were $15 or less. I want Hubba Bubba. Why did they take this
gum off the market anyway? If anyone has a clue, please tell me because I
am dying without my Hubba Bubba gum! What happened to Vans? As soon as
they went overseas for production, they shoes sucked. Keep those dumb
converse-that-folded-up-like-boots-and-down like-high-tops part of the past!

That's all for my 80's comments. Bring on the 00's!

Something Else is still in print from Reprise without any bonus tracks (at
least it's in the stores). Sound quality is good, but not as good as the
Castle stuff. I'm not sure if Castle will be reissuing the remastered SE. I
do know that Kontroversy, Kinda and the band's first album are all available
without bonus tracks in the US from Castle.

Pretty sad that the band is still being screwed by Virgin. All I can say is
at least it hasn't created writer's block (like John Fogerty's situation with
Fantasy Records)! Personally if I were Andy and Colin I'd tell Virgin to go
f**k themselves. Then again it is their music even if it's being held ransom!
We should all let Virgin know what we think of them (I don't know if I would
go so far as to not buy the collection. I have mixed feelings. On the one
hand it would hit Virgin where it hurts, but on the other hand it also would
prevent Andy & Colin from receiving additional -- small -- royalties). So
let's all start another Free XTC campaign.

Eels fans--Amazon has a b side that you can download for free in the Liquid
Audio format.

I made a small mistake -- I actually have Michael Versaci to

than "Thud" which is far easier to find.

Well Chaulksters,
Clearly the recreational ingestion during the 70s and 80s has come back
to haunt me, cuz I coulda sworn I saw Dave Gregory's name on an Aimee
Mann CD single I own of "I should have known", but alas, it was not to
be. Was there some other lithe blonde who's albums he performed on. I
did know about the romantic link. Anyway sorry for generating three days
of useless chatter about a figment of my imagination.

As for the "What's on my CD player" list, if anyone cares,

TMBG-John Henry (the horn section of "Sleeping in the Flowers" just
rocks!)
Fountains of Wayne-Utopia Parkway (the pop darlings of NPR)
Wilco-Summer Teeth (the album is so much more than the one single that
gets tons of radio play)
Eurythmics-Peace (Why it took them so long to get back together is
beyond me)
Beck-Mutations & Mellow Gold (how can this be the same guy?)
Midget-Jukebox (its pop-py enough for even the most jaded XTC fan)
Moxy Fruvous-Thornhill (these guys are the real deal, and deserving of
lots of listening)

Hopefully I won't imagine any more strange Dave Gregory sightings (he
did play on a Peter Gabriel album in 1980, right?).

Hi.

I'll bore you with some of my newest stuff that's in rotation, too:
Elliott Smith - XO and Either/Or
Neil Finn- Try Whistling This
Crowded House - Afterglow
Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense (new version)

And I just got a call from the wife that my Aimee Mann order has finally
arrived (Magnolia and Bachelor No2 ltd edition). Artistsdirect took their
bloody time (over 6 weeks!). If I were cynical I'd probably think they have
waited until they were sure that they wouldn't have to put 'Oscar winner'
stickers on there (glad I'm not cynical though).

Anyway, I think I can manage with all this until WS arrives.

Nice one Harrison - this is irresistible!

But first, in response to your post - that's a mighty large dose
of carrots my friend! And, btw, what's "Top Round" - must be some
American cut of meat?

Right, let's see, what did the grand tour of the Smudge digestive system
during the course of yesterday? Summed up:

Coffee - with milk, no sugar x3
Tea - ditto x2
Can Diet Coke x2
Bottles water x2 (hey, I like my liquids!)
1 Chocolate Croisssant (mmmmmmm!)
1 Chicken and coleslaw torpedo (that's a "sub" for you Yanks)
Apples x 2
Bananas x2

and, to cap it all,

My Mum's finest Sausage and Bean hotpot - yumyumyumyumyumyum!!

Oh, what the hell, yumyumyumyumyumyumyumyumyumyumyumyum!
(You can never get enough yums).

That's me satiated - now onto other random responses:

Phil Collins - what has that guy turned into. I will say without shame
(though in some fear of reprisal) that I absolutely loved (and still
do) Face Value. Trouble is, one decent album followed up by cliched
repeats ad nauseum does not a career make - well, evidently it
does. But the lawsuit against the horn players? What a wanker!

Next up - Kirsty Macoll - genius songwriter, shame about the
voice. I've always found it so ultra-plain that it can sometimes
distract from the songs.

Oh, and Virgin - how can we get some sort of revenge on these
megolamaniacs? Any useful offers accepted and acted upon. My solo act
so far has been to stop using them as my ISP - piddling, but
satisfying.

Oh, and my only non-response part - so therefore resonably
original. I've just listened to the extended version of "Never Enough"
by the Cure. Great stuff. Bugger me, can Robert Smith play when he
puts his mind to it or what?

Nice weekend all!

Hello!

Well, I wasn't around a whole lot to start with, but I've been gone for
almost a year...For some odd reasons, the posts are better on this list when
we're all waiting around for something, and aren't as good once we get it.
I am almost more excited about AV2 than I was about AV1, because some of my
favorite songs from the 95 demos that didn't make it onto AV1 (Church of
Women, Some Lovely, You and the Clouds) are going to be on AV2! Yay!

May 23...Hmmm, what's _with_ those 23s! (fnord!)

I'm glad this time, tho, that I haven't gotten the newest, up-to-date
bootlegs. I'm actually gonna sit it out this time. I got so comfortable
with those '95 demos that I was actually a bit disappointed with AV1, the
finished product. The demos lacked production, but the final CD I thought
had a little too much production here and there...I thought the demo of
Greenman had more "soul," but admittedly crappy production.

Well, I just wanted to be passe and blindly follow some old threads b/c I'm
lame...

IN MY CD PLAYER
Well, my stereo's a circa 1992 mini-Panasonic (we're talking manual control
5-band equalizer, kids, no pre-set rock/pop/concert stuff) that only has one
CD player on it. So, one CD (or webpage) at a time I'm listening to...
1) The Cleaners From Venus--"Golden Cleaners."
Ooh ooh Martin Newell! Yum yum yum!
2) Martin Newell--"The Greatest Living Englishman"
3) Olivia Tremor Control--"Black Foliage / Animation Music."
4) Orange Hat--"Pufferfish"
5) Jayhawks--Tomorrow the Green Grass / Hollywood Town Hall
6) Beatles--Yellow Submarine (actually, been _watching_ this one like a
junkie, but hey)
7) the streaming psychedelic channel on http://www.NetRadio.com
8) the Nuggets box set
9) XTC--English Settlement
10) Blur--Parklife / okay, all of them
11) watching the music videos on http://www.Launch.com--oh man, they have
the Cavedogs and even the video for the Dead Milkmen's "Methodist Coloring
Book!!!"
12) Rolling Stones "Their Satanic Majesties Request"
13) Moody Blues "Days of Future Passed"
14) Zombies "Odessey and Oracle"
15) all the Rhino DIY comps I have
16) others I won't admit to because my musical taste has a horrid, dark and
cheesy underbelly and you guys might make fun of me (here's a hint, I'm a
tender young 21 and actually get the Marilyn Manson thing...which is a big
turn-off to Mod boys, who think I'm some sort of soiled dove when they see
Mr. Manson and Booty Club Classics juxtaposed alongside my Kinks
collection....sigh...my large collection of Aleister Crowley books usually
sends 'em running scared too...)

Chalkhillers,

To make a long story short: through a stroke of luck (and a few other
things), I was able to visit the set of "Law & Order" today. My visit,
which included hanging out with Sam Waterston and the recently-engaged Angie
Harmon, also included a *weird* XTC reference:

There was a petition hanging in the hallway, outside the "Locations" office,
urging passersby to "SAVE 'FREAKS & GEEKS'!" Apparently, a ton of people
who work at "Law & Order" are big enough fans of the show that they
desperately want to rescue it from cancellation. Anyway, while I was
waiting for Mr. Waterston, one of the production assistants came up to me
and said, "As long as you're hanging around, why don't you sign my
petition?"

"Sure," I said. "I've never really seen the show, but any show that plays
XTC is a show that I love!"

The p.a. responded with a laugh. "Cool," she said. "XTC rocks!"

I signed the petition, and then turned back to the p.a. "By the way," I
said, pointing to a new red streak in your hair, "I like your hair!"

"Thanks," she responded. "*I* like XTC!"

Doesn't that rock? I think so. "Apple Venus Volume 2" rocks too, methinks.
I can't wait for it!

Meanwhile, it's a Johnny Marr party in my CD player:

The Smiths: The Smiths
Billy Bragg: Don't Try This At Home
Kirsty MacColl: Electric Landlady
(BTW...Could someone tell me about "Kite"? I'd love to hear it, but
it's unavailable here in the U.S.!)
Electronic: Raise the Pressure
Electronic: Electronic

And on MP3:

Public Enemy: 911 is a Joke
DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince: Nightmare on my Street
Charles & Eddie: Would I Lie to You?
Dionne Farris: I Know
Monie Love: It's a Shame

Wha'sup, y'all?

I thought I could stay off this thread, but, as was pointed out,
"everyone's doing it." (And yes, I'd jump off the cliff if the others were
doing it, too. I never claimed to be smart!) I've got one of those 24-disc
players, though, so you may want to scroll on to someone who's got a point
to make... (at least it's not one of those 100 or 200 disc beasts!) I
loaded it the other day when company was coming over, and so was trying to
achieve a bit of something for everyone. But everyone's long gone, and I'm
pleased with the assortment I chose that day, so they've remained in the
player. By using the "random" function, I can give musical schizophrenia
free reign. Here goes:

Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers: Echo
Southern Culture On The Skids: Dirt Track Date
Ronnie Laws: Pressure Sensitive
Led Zeppelin: Physical Graffiti (just disc 1 - Trampled Underfoot, Kashmir,
etc.)
The Beatles: A Hard Day's Night
The La's
Billie Holiday: God Bless The Child
Los Lobos: Colossal Head
some guys from Swindon: AV1
Fiona Apple: When The Pawn
Santana: Milagro
Bob Dylan: Infidels
Dada: Puzzle
The B-52's: Cosmic Thing
Mark Knopfler: Golden Heart
The Pretenders: Viva El Amor!
Django Reinhardt: Swingin' With Django
James Brown: The CD Of JB
The Beatles: Magical Mystery Tour
World Party: Goodbye Jumbo
those Swindon guys again: Nonsuch
Bruce Hornsby: Harbor Lights
Squeeze: Play
k.d. lang: Ingenue

I meant to include Utopia Parkway from Fountains Of Wayne when I was
loading it up, but probably got distracted by smoke from the grill (I was
cooking out for family on the occasion of my son's 8th birthday). I used to
live close to Utopia Parkway (it's a major road in Queens, New York City),
and that got me paying attention to a story on National Public Radio about
the album several months ago... then the snippets they played from the
album caused me to order it as soon as I finished the drive home from
work. My visiting relatives, also New York refugees, would've liked them,
too.

A new k.d. lang album on the way? Outstanding! I'll have to stroll over to
Pollstar.com to check on the possibility of a tour. I'm a something of a
concert addict, and I haven't seen her perform yet.

OK, I checked: one date, 4/29 at RFK Stadium in Washington DC. Seems like
an awfully BIG venue to hear a singer like her... hmmm.

Is it May 23rd yet? No? (dammit...)

Well, enough babble. On with the digest...
Take care, and peace.

i've got to tell you, this is going to find itself on my top 3 albums

i've always been a big fan of Mr. Smith, and knew it was a race between
Elliot Smith, Andy Partridge, and Neil Finn as to who was to write the
perfect pop album... i think Elliot has done it. simply unreal.
absolutely unreal.

pay more for FUCKING SILENCE than MY ART, that my music actually DEVALUES
CASSETTES OF SILENCE in the public's eyes. And that made me feel lonely,

Me, I prefer to think that people are actually paying more for the
*possibility* of what they can put on that blank cassette than they are for
a cassette that already has stuff on it (even though it's Todd). I guess
freedom of choice is the more desirable and therefore the costlier of the
two commodities at hand here, though we all knew that already, didn't we?

RE:
Kirsty MacColl does have a slight XTC connection by
the way. Steve
Lillywhite, who used to be married to her, supposedly
pulled out of
producing "Nonsuch" because of their marital problems.

Not to mention the wonderful Lillywhite production of
both Drums & Wires and Black Sea...

Subject: my next obsession...
Message-ID: <000331132426AD.06291@webd3.mail.com>

Oh, methinks this thread is going to take a turn towards the
silly.......let's see Harrison....since it's Friday morning where I am
and I haven't had a chance yet to truly indulge in my next obsession
after music, let's look back at the week and kind of do a "Food
Highlights" thing:
Sunday night: My lovely boyfriend made me a shepherd's pie preceeded
by, accompanied by, and followed by wine.
Monday Afternoon: A grilled chicken sandwich and half a glass of
chardonnay.
Tuesday night: We went to our favorite hippie joint and I had steamed
vegetables, almond crusted halibut, and a glass(es) of wine.
Wednesday night: A savory course of.....meatless corndogs finished off
with a beer.
Thursday afternoon: A bag of candy accompanied by a cherry soda
preceeded by a bag of Munchems and some French chocolates.
Friday: (?) At least I've started off the day with a bagel - that's a
good sign.

In summary.........a whino struggling to eat healthier - and losing
grip. I've also been recently crowned the Queen of Low Fat Processed
Junk Food. (See Santa Barbara News Press - edition 234.)

RE: Aimee Mann Oscar Thread

Although she seemed a bit overwhelmed at the Oscars, her presence I
feel, was a welcome one. I have to agree with the Chalkie who said
that it must be hard to enjoy yourself in the presence of so many
self-congratulatory celebrities. I found her performance to be
refreshing - I almost felt like rock/pop as I know it made a bit of a
comeback that night in her being there...and nominated. My eyes were
still trying to adjust to the glare of slick, polished divas and
country music icons and boy groups sending disco-ball glitter out into
the crowd when she came on. It was nice to see someone a bit more
"real", if that is what it is.

Take care all. Rule of thumb: aspirins mashed into orange/pineapple
soda do not make a hungover person well.
Love,
- May
