Good day one and all . . .

Had to drive to Brighton last night - from my home town it's 50 miles
and about 70 minutes. Aware that car stereo had, just a few days earlier,
gone coughing and spluttering to the great breaker's yard in the sky
(taking my cassette of Steve McQueen by Prefab Sprout with it!), I
thought "f*ck it, I'll listen to my Discman in the car".

Silly and slightly risky I know, but I couldn't face the journey without
some sounds. "What've I got that'll see me through a 50 mile drive", I
thought? "Hmmmm . . .Nonsuch on the way there, Black Sea or the
extended Mummer CD on the way back . . . perfick!"

Right, pay attention, here comes the embarrassing bit. I'm used to
playing my car stereo (and others) pretty loud. I normally drive around,
window down, (ahem) "singing" at the top of my lungs, confident that
the stereo is drowning out the din of my voice.

Guess who, within a few bars of Peter Pumpkinhead, forgot that he was
bawling along to a soundtrack going on inside his head and, therefore,
essentially silent to the outside world . . . cue first stop at
traffic lights and some *VERY* strange looks directed at the idiot
sitting in his car singing along to a stereo no-one else could see and
a (probably weird sounding) song no-one else could hear.

Guess who still carried on doing his best high-pitched harmonies
(ahem, again!) to "My Bird Performs" blissfully unaware as to *why*
said strange looks were directed his way.

So, next time your local do-gooder says "don't drive with headphones
on" be aware that it's not your safety he's concerned about. It's your
street cred!

As a famous TV presenter once said (about wrestling I believe)
. . . "don't try this at home kids, it's f*cking stupid!"

As a postscript to the above story - if you have any pretentions to
having a half-decent singing voice (which actually I do), try and sing
along to the whole of Nonsuch at "concert" volume. Phew . . . another
reason perhaps why Andy doesn't relish live stuff!

As a postscript to that (and I know this is REALLY sad), by the time I
was singing the last verse of "Books Are Burning" I was a Lassie film
title away from crying my eyes out. Strange old life innit?

Hello -
I've been reading these digests for more than a year now, and I
seem to recall ( like someone else that just posted, but am too lazy to
check) that I was much more excited last year just before AV1 came out.
Could've been the seven-year-wait I suppose. Also the posts were alive with
interesting AV1 talk. I also remember that occasionally, some rep from TVT
or Cooking Vinyl would post here giving us fans an update to what was
happening.I havn't seen any such post for a while now and furthermore, the
TVT/Cooking Vinyl websites offer no mention of the new album.
This is a little distressing, seeing that this
label isn't huge, you'd think they would be busy drumming up business for
itself. There are people being paid to do just that.Is the honeymoon over?
Another question: will XTC do another signing
tour like last year? I think most people would say that it was a great
success- I'm surprised the label hasn't said anything about that either.
And lastly, someone may have already pointed this out, but latest
news on the CDNOW website:

" XTC Launches Wasp Star In May

March 22, 2000, 10:55 am PT

XTC has added a prefix to their upcoming sequel to Apple Venus Volume 1 --
Wasp Star (Apple Venus Volume 2) will hit stores on May 23 on TVT Records.
The album was originally slated to be titled simply Apple Venus Volume 2.

The first single from the album has been narrowed down to "Stupidly Happy"
or "I'm the Man Who Murdered Love." Rumors of singer Andy Partridge's
much-ballyhooed flatbed truck tour following the album's release continue to
circulate. XTC is also expected to be in the States for some TV appearances
sometime in April. "

      Any comments?

p.s. I can't resist-

      2. Life Of Surprises- Prefab Sprout

I don't think it was Dave performing with her at the Oscars, but then I'm
only familiar with the two guys who usually back her up - Patrick Warren
(keyboards) and Buddy Judge (guitar, backup vocals, wearing hat). I've seen
her perform in few times this past year and she seemed a bit nervous at the
Oscars. Who can blame her? A bunch of self congratulatory celebrities is
not my idea of a fun crowd.

Anyway, if Dave was there, I didn't recognize him.

People,

Dave Gregory did not play with Aimee Mann at the Oscars. Dave Gregory
did not play on any of Aimee Mann's solo albums, nor did he play on
the "Magnolia" soundtrack. Dave Gregory did play guitar and keyboards
as part of Aimee Mann's live band during the "Whatever" tour in 1993.
Dave Gregory did play guitar on a live recording of Aimee Mann's "I've
Had It" which appears on the "Rare On Air - Volume 2" compilation.
The session was recorded December 1, 1993, at KCRW in Los Angeles.
This recording of "I've Had It" also appeared on a promo CD single.

I hope that's the end of this topic.

And, way back when records were 78 RPM acetate, an artist could release a
collection of several acetate discs packaged nicely in a bound book some-
what resembling today's photo binders...what were they called?...albums, of
course. My parents have several nice examples of these by various artists
that they collected in their youth, one of which (by Les Paul) is most
likely a valuable collector's item today I imagine. Due to the fragility
of acetate, several in their collection didn't survive...one accidental
drop of the album, and all of the discs would shatter!! (I imagine if XTC
had been released in this medium, Erica's angry "Andy record throwing"
incident would have been much more satisfying!!).

Returning you to your regularly scheduled Wasp Star name debate,

Here's what this freak is listenin' to:

Like Minds - Gary Burton/Chick Corea/Pat Metheny/Roy Haynes/
                       Dave Holland
Cardiacs - Guns (Thanks for the recommendation, Dom!)
Time Out - Dave Brubeck Quartet
AV I - (of course...)
Kind of Blue - Miles Davis (one of my all-time favorite albums)
Good Dog Happy Man - Bill Frisell
O&L - (had the urge to listen to this again)
Imaginary Day - Pat Metheny Group
Time is of the Essence - Michael Brecker
Trio 99->00 - Pat Metheny Trio (interesting version of "Giant Steps")
What's Going On - Marvin Gaye (one of my all-time favorite albums)
Going Back Home - Ginger Baker Trio
Chips from the... - (you know who...)
Diane Schuur & The Count Basie Orchestra
Ethnomusicology Vol. I - Russell Gunn
Ghost Town - Bill Frisell
Anatomy - Stan Ridgway
BBC Sessions - Cocteau Twins (alternately swapping the 2 discs)
Our 25th Year - Rob McConnell & the Boss Brass
Zero Tolerance for Silence - Pat Metheny (to annoy my co-workers)

Er...ahhh...looking back at this it appears I've grown to be quite the
"Jazzbo" recently. Maybe Wasp Star will snap me back to Pop for
a while.

I for one love W&G, and am looking forward to Nick's feature film! My G4
Macintosh is named Wallace, and other drives on the system are Gromit and
Shaun (with appropriate icons, of course).

I also truly enjoyed Toy Story 2 from Pixar, but part of that is because I
know one of the writers on the project. Still, a very good film, and one I'm
looking forward to getting on video.

In your "now playing" section, you mentioned Rita Mitsouko... I have a very
old vinyl LP from her and a backing band. I don't recall the title off the
top of my head, this would have been from around 1980... is she still
recording? I remember liking this album quite a bit, but haven't listened to
it in years.

I too anxiously await Wasp Star (what a surprise!). I've heard Playground, I
must say that it's gotten me very excited to hear the rest of the album.

Actually the guy on to the left of Aimee (in the hat) playing guitar was the
great Buddy Judge who was in the Grays with Jason Falkner and Jon Brion. I
spotted Patrick Warren on keyboards. Not sure who else was in the band.

Glad you enjoyed Black Sea, it's one of my most often played XTC discs. I
guess I can understand where you're coming from regarding the KC releases.
Anything done live by the "double trio" is going to have a whole new
dimension to it: They are hard to beat in a live situation. Was lucky enough
to see them a few years ago in Chicago... a great show!

If you're looking for good studio Crimson to buy, get these: Lark's Tongues
in Aspic, Starless, Red, Discipline. Those are pretty essential, especially
if you like the heavy stuff. Three of a Perfect Pair was certainly the
weakest of the '80's material.

Andy told me that there's still a lot of crap they're having to take from
Virgin over the demo boxed set. Virgin now say that they will retain all
rights to all demos handed to them, used or not. And they HAVE to give them
the good stuff (Nigel, Towers, Dear God, Peter Pumpkinhead, etc.) as well as
unreleased stuff. AND the band are contractually obligated to be "active
participants in all aspects of the project".
In other words, they're screwed. Andy says they had to agree to this to get
out of their contract and release new albums on another label. But to lose
the rights to Mayor Of Simpleton? That's criminal!
To which Andy says "Yes, exactly."

Hello everyone.

1) I wanted to thank those of you who made suggestions for Kinks purchases.
I just picked up my first Kinks album (The Kinks are the Village Green
Preservation Society), and have listened to it 2 or 3 times so far. I am
pleased. In fact, it reminds me quite a bit of Pink Floyd back in the early
era (eg. Piper at the Gates of Dawn & Saucerful of Secrets) when they were
"The Pink Floyd". Not to start an annoying thread, but there seems to be
little mention of Early Floyd/XTC similarities around here.

2) To those I have traded XTC stuff with in the past, thank you. I am
indebted. I certainly think that I came of better than the people I traded
with overall. So, out of feelings of guilt I am willing to make demo copies
for people who may be interested (unless I get too many responses that it
becomes overwhelming or cost-prohibitive). So, e-mail me if interested. And,
I am always interested in trading so e-mail me.

3) Long Live Dom!

4) Longer live John Relph!

5) Even longer live XTC!

-Tom Griffin (May he live long as well)

Coffee--2 cups, with milk and sugar

3 slices Top Round, with gravy
1 dollop mashed potatoes, instant, ditto
Approximately 30 baby carrots, steamed
20 oz. Coca-Cola
2 Altoids cadged from cute graphic designer in boring meeting
2 pieces "Original" Dentyne gum

There will be more, after I get home for dinner, and I'll post an update

Anybody else? Come on! It's fun, and fascinating reading for everybody!

Swami Dane Bramage here to tell of great things in store for the
Three..er..Two Wise Men from Swindon! I have dealt the cards,
scattered and read the leaves, consulted the Sun...er...stars,
studied the pattern of the dog vomit on the sidewalk (ouch!
sorry about that one) and see a distinct pattern emerging that
shall gaurantee success in the waning days of this coming
decade...

(Those among us who are *not* Americans bear with me here)

Let's take the way-back machine to the 1970's, shall we? This is
the decade in which American fads and media icons first celebrated
the perceived glory of the 1940's - WWII, Swing Music, The USO...

The end of the '70s into the 1980's embraced all of the starched-shirt
propriety of the 1950's - Happy Days, Conservativism, Back to the
Future, Madras shirts and Bermuda shorts, M*A*S*H...

The dusk of the 80's into the 1990's saw the vivid purple resurgence
of the 60's - The Dukes, Beatles, end of the Cold War era, China Beach,
The Wonder Years, JFK...

The end of the 90's into 2000 now celebrates the nylon 1970's - That 70's
Show, flared trousers, Disco rebirth, Peace Signs, Mod Squad movie,
Charlie's Angels movie...

If XTC can just hold out until the end of this decade, the 80's will once
again
be fashionable completing the 30-year cycle - Nigel will once again be a
mega-hit and everyone will rediscover the wondrous back-catalogue (and
current music) of the fabulous XTC!!!!

The existence of the just-cancelled Freaks and Geeks show confirms this...
Hang in there Andy and Colin!!!

And now I must return behind the curtain to my Orgone Accumulator for
further research...This is Swami Dane Bramage bidding you a good future...
