So, Mitch, when you say, "Yup, it's amazing!",
are you really saying that you've got a pre-release disc
in your grubby little paws and you've listened to the thing
about 27 times already?

And when you say. "I will say no more", are you really telling
us "Nah-nah, nah-nah, nah-nah?"

You great-big tease...

Oh, and I fully agree with Garret Harkawik that the break up
of Soul Coughing is terribly sad news. Of all the new bands
I've tried in recent years, Soul Coughing was the only one
I became addicted to. So brilliant, so creative, so long...

Greetings, People of the Chalk-Horse!

"The Maya, like the Mesopotamians of the First Babylonian Dynasty (c.
1829-1530 BC) knew that Venus completes five runs through its 584-day
cycle in eight solar years. At the end of eight years, the same
configuration of Venus is transported back to the same calendar date.
This means, for example, that Venus will first appear as a morning
star on the same date it appeared as morning star eight years
before....The long term accuracy of the table is
extraordinary....Armed with the relationship between the solar
caldendar and Venus cycles, the May didn't stop with eight years and
five rounds of Venus. The wanted Venus to match up with their 260-day
ritual callendar, too, and that meant going through more cycles. And
they did, with an accuracy of plus or minus two hours every 481
years."

(How long between Nonesuch and Apple Venus 2?)

"These intricate caluculations were not performed as part of a
scientific investigation of the motion of Venus. Instead they were
inteded to help Maya prognosticators interpret omens based upon their
calendar and the behavior of Venus. The installed their kings,
sacrificed prisoners, and went to war by thos omens. They were not
watching a planet--but a god."

("Then she appeared, Apple Venus..." -- and we can't wait!)

Planets" by Dr. E.C. Krupp of LA's Griffith Observatory and a monthly

There has been a change in the XTC Listening Party after finding out
there is a chat room on Talk City already called, Mummer. So
tonight's chat has been postponed, and I was thinking this Saturday
doing it. I was going to have a Talk Talk listening party that day,
but I'm thinking of bagging that for this one. So how does Saturday
night at 10pm EST sound? If you have any problems please e-mail me.
The name of the listening party will just be xtclisteningparty
(hopefully that'll work) if not I'll let you know. So I'll post
everything on my web site. Sorry about the inconvenience.

I took out all the curse words I originally wanted in my subject
heading.

Digitalmaster asked if there is good music out there? New stuff?

YES YES YES, there is.

Buy ANY CD from Belle and Sebastian.

The Boy with the Arab Strap is very very nice.
Sinister is wonderful.

I'm sure Tigersmilk (?) is great, too.

I think they'll be having a new record out soon... but they do have a
new "boxset" out of old singles and Boy with the Arab Strap is fairly
recent.

Its a damn good band, my friends.

Sorry, no XTC in the post today.
Just responding to a question.

I want this to be good because

I know I'll be there the second it's available to buy
and my hands will shake as I unwrap my copy...

I'll put the headphones on for the first listen
I always do),
have a "smoke"
and just let it wash over me.

I swear, the other day i put on AVI and I was BOWLED OVER once again. The
lows, the highs = my oh my - it was.....heaven. (if you haven't done this in
a while, put it on and REALLY LISTEN.)

Then I am sure I will get real anal and buy a vinyl copy and a cassette copy
for the car(truck). Then I'll make a reeel with both AVI and WASP STAR
together.

Ahh but you know, that's what being a fan is all about!

Okay... one more post and then I'll disappear.

Gawd... one more thing about Wasp Star (so old, so old by now I'm
ashamed even to put this up).

WASP STAR... I first thought of the acronym, okay? Typical America I
am, though I'm not Anglo-Saxon protestant.

If you get bored enough to do an idiot's search for Andy Partridge's
email address (really, I was only bored and feeling like being
ridiculous) you'll find some nice addresses for Andy Partridge, the
White Master.

Probably not a very safe thing to name your album WASP STAR when there
is a white supremist out there with your name. Ignorant people in one
of your best markets could get confused. At the same time, it is kind
of funny, don't you think... especially considering one of XTC's albums
(as you all know) is titled White Music.

For those curious... I found no addresses under Colin Moulding (I'm
telling you, I was bored, really!!!)

OK, time to satisfy my lust for attention via the randon posting method.

First up, wasps. In this country they're little insects that sting you
if you're dumb enough to get in their way. John Boudreau, most
"whites" (nice) in YOUR world might think otherwise - but speaking as
a White Anglo Saxon, it has never crossed my mind, and now it's a
"hot" subject on the digest . . . well, to be honest it still
doesn't. Could we all please stop navel-gazing regarding this title -
it's becoming really tedious!

Although . . . :-) . . . if Wasp Star does mean those little asterisks
in words like f*ck and sh*t, why didn't Andy call it W*sp St*r?

Third, currently playing in the Smith sockets:

PC at work: Jordan (The Comeback) - Prefab Sprout
Discman: Black Sea (almost endlessly at the mo)
Front room stereo (3 CD changer - wooo hooo!): Gaucho - Steely Dan (I know,
I know . . but I LOVE it); Violator - Depeche Mode; The Colour of Spring
(Talk Talk)
Bedroom: Out ot The Blue (ELO)
Car: yeah, like I can afford a car with a CD! If I could, perfect
music for singing at the top of yer voice while driving - anything by
Stevie Wonder (excpet the obvious . . .)

BTW, who the h*ll is Wayne Newton?

Ta ta, off to colour this old brown town Gold!

Well, I haven't been on the list for awhile, but your post spoke to me.
My answer is yes. The past 6 years or so have been great for music.
Here's some highlights:
Tortoise's TNT & Millions Now Living Will Never Die
To me, TNT is the best album in the entire universe. Beyond that even. This
is fully instrumental ingeniousness, that can only be heard and uncomparable
to anything in my eyes. I feel that Apple Venus and TNT have a bond to them
in some way, but I can't place how.
Neutral Milk Hotel's Aeroplane Over the Sea
One of the best folkpopfuzz albums ever made. The words are great. The
singing is great. The songs are great. Buy this and be very pleased.
Olivia Tremor Control's Black Foilage & Dusk @ Cubist Castle
60s pop-psychedelia ... on acid. You haven't heard pop songs this good,
their so good it seems like fantasy, and OTC recognizes this, and is
unafraid to shatter your dreams.
The new Eels album is very good.
Jim O'Rourke's Eureka and Halfway to a Threeway are superb! The man is a
song genius.
Sam Prekop's self-titled. Sea & the Cake's The Fawn. Flaming Lips' Soft
Bulletin. Godspeed You Black Emperor. Beck's last few records. [All of them
in fact].
Air's Moon Safari is one of the best of its kind.
Stereolab's Emperor Tomato Ketsup is a must own.

I guess thats it for me right now.

Take it from an old guy: asking a girl out is ALWAYS worth it, even if the

Hi "Kreideberger", hi Kevin,

As has happened several times in the past, a post from Kevin Diamond
has proved to be the highlight of an issue of Chalkhills. Way to go,
Kev!

Once, when I was 16, I was involved in a group dominated by 35-50 year
old men, and as Kevin is here, and I was quite active in that group,
as Kevin is here. And, in one of my numerous posts, I said something
they all thought was clever, and then one of them said, "Out of the
mouths of babes comes wisdom."

I wasn't sure then if I liked being called a "babe" -- since I was
struggling to gain entry and acceptance in a group of much older guys,
and wanted to be considered "one of them", not just a "kid" -- but
"time wounds all heels" or something like that, and looking back on it
now, I think it was a genuine compliment. And one I never forgot, on
top of that.

So, Kevin, "Out of the mouths of babes comes wisdom." You did it
right, my friend. And, once you reach the next phase, when you really
start dreaming about this girl and you know in your bones that she's
the one for you (who knows, maybe after your date this weekend?), but
despite all of that, somehow you find you're stuck again and don't
