Greetings on a snowy Saturday morning in pastoral paradise Kumamoto Japan
...

Would somebody please e-mail me off list and fill me in on the music " scene
" in America these days ? What are young people listening to ?
>From what I can gather from the kids here - who tend to mimic the Americans
in just about every way - hip hop , r & b , house , reggae , soul ; what
they call " black music " , is where it is at . I have seen several music
magazines on the shelves in book stores with titles like " Black Music
Journal " and " Black Scene " which are totally devoted to the
aforementioned genres . Very curious ...

Yes , my daughter mentioned this to me . I have yet to hear it , but
wouldn't be a bit surprised if it is a rip off of ROO . Bloody typical ,
actually . Back in the 60's and early 70's they had a genre of music over
here called " group sounds " . The record companies manufactured goofy
groups who sung current pop hits in the US in Japanese . The fans of course
assumed the tunes were original . I doubt very much that the writers of
these songs received any royalties from the big Japanese record companies
either .

Okay okay, I know that I am thus admitting guilt in actually watching this
musically irrelevant, stupid show, but "Dear God" was actually mentioned as
one of the top 'rebel songs of all time' on VH1's "The List." But, alas! It
got beat out by a couple rap songs and Bob Marley for the top three spots.
What else is new!

Hey Chalksters, I have a dilemma. John Relph's web site has Some Lovely (My
Brown Guitar) listed in the song tracks for "Wasp Star" . Mark Strijbos' web
site has it omitted.

is it or isn't it?

Yes yes yes. I haven't heard the studio version of "Back in NYC," but the
live "Lamb" by Giraffe is incredible. I dare say that I like KG's version
of "Grand Parade of Lifeless Packaging" better than the original...

For those who haven't heard Kevin's tunes, you're doing yourself a real

I'm not Mayan, but I believe X is usually pronounced as "sh". So "Xux
Ek" would be "shoosh ache". One of my favorite stories from friends
visiting the Yucutan is the one about the sign "XAOR", which appeared
on the door to the shower.

I'd thought our friends down in Mexico would be writing in
to correct everyone..... but I'll do it for them. The Aztec
and Mayan civilizations were not the same thing. The Aztecs,
or Mexica as they called themselves, dominated the area around
what is presently Mexico City. Their capital city was Tenochtitlan,
which was completely leveled by the gold-seeking bastard Cortes.
The Spanish priests came along later to make sure the damage was
permanent. The Mexica spoke Nahuatl.

On the other hand, the Mayans dominated the Yucatan Peninsula
and surrounding regions. Their "golden age" of pyramids and temples
came long before the Mexica (Aztecs) were around. So, the two
civilizations were separated by both time and distance.

As far as I know, the two languages, Mayan and Nahuatl, are
completely different.

Now you know more than I do.

Dog Vomit Purchasers,

The latest issue of Uncut has yet another account of XTC on the road. This
time their travelogue is from Texas westward during their 1980 US tour.
After reading this, you will be amazed that they toured as long as they did.
One of the gigs mentioned is for Houston's Rock Island. See evidence at:
http://chalkhills.org/images/promo/Houston1980.jpg

The sound system was so horrible that they cancelled that show and played
instead at the Cowboy Club. The club manager upon hearing their reasons for
cancelling, stated "But the Police played here". Prompting Terry to reply,
"Just because the Police played every fucking chicken-coop in the west,
doesn't mean we have to." The best anecdote is their reaction to the
following at the Cowboy Club:
'Suddenly, the [PA] music's switched off, there's a drum roll and a rifle
shot. Everyone on the dancefloor freezes, the men whipping off their hats
and holding them over their hearts. The Texas flag is unfurled over the
crowd and everyone starts singing "The Eyes of Texas Are Upon You".
Evidently, its closing time. "Fuck me," says Chambers. "'Ave these people
never heard of a cheerful 'Time, gentlemen, please'? Fuckin' gunfire and
flags, what's that all about?"

Another Terry Tale is when they reach LA they attended a party hosted by
David Byrne. Terry was observed talking with Brian Eno. Terry was asked the
next day what they were talking about. "I asked him if he had a
bottle-opener", Terry says, "and I get a lecture on the history of the
fuckin' world. After about three quarters of an hour, I had to ask him to
speed things up a bit because we still hadn't got to the bit about the Earth
cooling. "Ere", Chambers says then. "Pass us that beer while the bastard's
still cold, will you?"

OK, I know this may be besides the point but "wife-killing junky"? I suggest
you read the amazing authorized biography by Ted Morgan called "Literary

friends were all very high...

Uhhhh...am I missing something Ralph? If he was very high when he
"accidentally killed" his wife it appears that "wife-killing junky" may just
be the shoe that fits.

not spelled "planter."

Funny you should ask. I'm not Mayan, but I play one on TV. Also, I've
read Tintin's "Prisoners of the Sun" dozens of times.

It *REALLY REALLY* is the Mayan name for Venus and it's pronounced
SHOOSHEK. Read Charles Olson's "Mayan Letters" some time (New

Also, I just heard this recently, and was wondering if
anyone here could verify. Someone told me the #1 best

That seems really weird to me. Could this be true?
---------------------

Don't seem weird to me. DOES seem like proof that most
people have their musical taste located up their
ass...

Actually, I thint it's true. Recall reading it
somewhere recently. For a while, the best selling
album was the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack. That
was usurped by Michael Jackson's Thriller, which held
the top spot until last year, when the Eagles took
over. Appearently, it sells very steadily as a back
catalog item, and took 15 years or so to become the
all time beat seller.
Similar things have happenrd before. Wasn't Dark Side
of the Moon on Billboard's top 100 chart for 10 years
or something? Seems odd to me that a record that
existed mainly as a soundrack to teenage pot parites
in the '70's could chart for so long...

Wasp Star-
that sounds like a 70's glam rock/pop sort of title to
me. Like it should be the title of an old lp by Sweet
or something.
Maybe they can toss off a cover of 'Love is Like
Oxygen' or 'Little Willy' for a bonus single
track....

Little Willy-sounds like a personal problem to me!

Hola Chalkies
I must say I dig the name of the new album. It sounds
vibrant and innovative, something that's always been
synonymous with XTC.
It also sounds like the title of a sci-fi movie. Who
knows ~ maybe Andy and Colin will be in the next "I Am

out of this world talents. ;-)

Being the pedant I am, I must point out that the song in questions is called
Insect Mother (as i am sure you are aware).

However, Insert Mother is also a very good name for a song.

Do you think it's possible that when we are all experts on mayan cosmology,
Andy will change the title again and we'll all have to go out and do more

Hey, all.

I just got wind that there's a new XTC cover band. It's an
all-female-vocal a cappella group based in The Vaticin, made entirely out of
Sisters and Mothers of the catholic church. Apparently, they're going to be
calling themselves Nun-such. Needless to say, they will NOT be covering Dear
God. More news as this unfolds.
