Anyways, thanks for a fun year! I've always enjoyed Chalkhills, even when the posts flog some boring thread to death or I get bitch-slapped for my opinions clashing with someone elses. Being on this list has made me a few e-friends, and given me lots of interesting tape trades. A year ago, I had three XTC tapes-a live show from Ann Arbor in 1980, a live show from Boston, and Jules Verne's Sketchbook. Today, I have over 15 XTC tapes/cdr's of various live shows, demos and interviews, as well as close to a dozen by other bands. All from joining this list! As I recall, a lot of posts last year around this time were discussing whether hearing the AV demos would spoil the album once it was released. I held off on hunting down the demos until after I bought AV1 (on the release date, of course!) just in case. Now I have heard most if not all the demos for AV2, so we'll see if it effects my enjoyment of that one. My guess is that it won't. I heard Jules Verne's Sketchbook before the Dukes, and i like the Dukes recording of Little Lighthouse better than the demo. On the other hand, I've recently heard most of the Nonsuch demos for the first time, and I like them all much metter than the album versions. Subject: RIP LE Hi: Joe Jarrett articulately shared the bad news about The Little Express, summing up just about everything I feel about June, Pete and the fine little labor of love that used to come out four times a year. I can only add a few memories to back up the points he made so well. I remember that I used to eagerly await each issue, reading it immediately upon arrival to find out what the band had been doing and was planning to do, what critics and others were saying about them, and what fans had to say and trade. The Little Express was the first confirmation for me that I was not alone in the world as an XTC fan, that there were others as (or more) dedicated to the band and its art as I. The LE was my XTC digest, my resource -- how else could I read interviews with Andy, et. al., that were published in magazines or newspapers in England, Europe or other strange and exotic locales? In the 1980s this beast now known as the World Wide Web wasn't there to connect us and make time and distance almost irrelevant. The LE provided an entertaining and enlightening glimpse into the workings of the band (the issue that came out after the recording of Skylarking especially springs to mind), and into the minds of its members and fans. June and Pete are wonderful, approachable, patient people. When I, in an egotistic delusional haze, thought that Andy Partridge would actually want to listen to one of my bands' musical output, they forwarded the falling-far-short-of-XTC tapes and fawning letters to him. When it came time for my first pilgrimage to England and -- naturally -- Swindon, Pete responded to my frantic request (it was one or two days before leaving for England, and Swindon's lodging options ain't exactly in the travel books), calling DC from Barrie to steer me toward a nice B&B in the city. When I moved, they always responded to my change-of-address forms with a nice note and flawless service. Even when they couldn't help me -- for instance, when I was trying to score a copy of Windowbox -- I could always tell it was never through lack of trying. When the most-recent issue came out in September 1998, I had high hopes that the LE could continue. The issue was focused and raw, containing a perspective on the band and Dave's departure that I hadn't seen anywhere else, including here. At the same time, I can understand why June and Pete decided to turn off the presses -- it's tough to compete with the real-time medium of the Internet and, as Joe pointed out, dear departed Dave was indeed a great source of information for the newsletter. So now I'll wait by the mailbox one last time. Rest in Peace, Little Express. You'll live on in the fond memories of many a rabid XTC fan, including this one. And to June and Pete, thank you for everything, and best wishes for a peaceful and prosperous future. --Todd

Greetings to all!
After reading the last digest (#27) I felt rather dejected. So many
goodbyes..the LE...the Nigels...Chipping Norton Studios.....what a downer!
It was the proverbial straw that broke this fragile camel's back....I
decided to seal up the windows and be done with it all...it didn't take me
long to realize that my heating pad, though set on 'high', would never
create the carbon monoxide necessary to succeed....Thank Ganesha for this
eleventh-hour revelation because only then did I remember that AV2 was about
to appear on the horizon!! Land Ho!! I've been saved!!
But seriously, to June and Peter, your devotion and loyalty to those
gear gents from Swindon shall not go unrecognized...three cheers for you
both!...
Regarding Murgatroyd Llewellyn's post in digest #27....it seems like
every third or so frame is missing...now I may not be the brightest jewel in
the crown (amen!) but am I alone in my confusion? Please send me some sort
of template that I can place over my computer screen so I may decipher your
esoteric script...danke!
Stepping back to AV2...is it available for advanced order-if so, has
anyone done so? Where and how much? Please e-mail me directly...thank you

Twenty-three critics out of the 489 polled placed AV1 in their top ten. Of
these 23, these following intelligent and discriminating gentlemen placed it
in their top three:
- Steve Matteo #2 with 14 pts
- Bob Grossweiner #3 with 14 pts
- William Ruhlmann #3 with 13 pts
But the highest accolades go to the following stalwart and brainy
individuals, who considered it the best album of 1999:
- Mac Randall
- Ken Richardson
Randall, who gave the album the maximum allowable 30 points, is (as far as
I'm able to ferret out) a writer for the Boston Phoenix and one helluva guy.
I couldn't find anything about Richardson.
As Ralph points out, Homespun achieved #423 on the list on the shoulders of
the Australian (it appears) Don Share, who out of some strange eccentricity
deemed it his Number One album of 1999. He gave it 20 points, ranking it
above efforts from Jason Falkner, Super Furry Animals, Robyn Hitchcock, and
The Lilac Time (in case you were wondering where his head's at!)
Interestingly, he makes no mention of Apple Venus Volume 1. I'd just love to
buttonhole this guy and hear his reasoning. Anyone forwarding a functioning
email address for Mr. Share will win my heartfelt whatchmacallit.

Not particularly a propos of anything, but buttressing some points I was
trying to make late last year, the following quote appeared in the editorial
matter accompanying the poll results:
Rock is like a fallen tree. Dead and rotting, it will sustain
whole microecosystems of bugs, toads, fungi, mosses, for
decades to come--teeming populations of minuscule critters
living off its moribund tissue, its necrotic myth-flesh of
gesture and expression. Sure you can focus on a specific
fungus-patch or toad-clutch (e.g. thrash/death/black metal
or emocore) and perceive virulent vitality. But the tree,
the overarching macro-myth, is still dead.

As one who grew up in Canada and brought at least two or three of my XTC LPs there(boy, I've dated myself), I can say the only Canadian only release I know of is the 5 Senses EP, which includes "Smokeless Zone," "Officer Blue," "Wait Till Your Boat Goes Down," "Don't Lose Your Temper," and "Strange Tales, Strange Tails." tThe only one from that album I'd put on an XTC compilation for newbies would be "Smokeless Zone," I don't particularly care for the rest of it, not their best work IMO. I'm amazed they even consider WTYBGD wothy of release as a single, it just might qualify as their worst single ever. I find it about as fun to listen to as chasing parked cars. I love "Smokeless Zone," though. It's a weird little song, but I find it oddly addictive. I think it's one of Colin's best, though I hear he doesn't think much of it. Anyway, I believe most of the 5 senses EP can be found on the CD release of Black sea anyway, so most of you probably have it in that form. I have the LP myself, so I'm glad to have 5 Senses anyway. Though it's not XTC's best work, what the hell, XTC at their worst are still better than 99% of what's out there. Christopher R. I just had a few amusing things happen (really non-events, but they made
me chuckle.)
For Valentine's Day, along with my valentine from my husband, there was a
valentine with the return address reading "A. Partridge, Swindon,
England." My husband is really good natured about my silliness. I then
opened, along with my chocolates, a bottle of white wine from
California. The brand name? Chalk Hill. That will undoubtedly be held
onto until some rabid fan gathering, I'm sure.
Then yesterday I had a client who had just been transferred here from the
UK. We were chatting and chuckling about our cultural differences, and we
got to the subject of our rotaries/their roundabouts, when she mentioned
that in her hometown that they had this roundabout with five entrances....

she's from Swindon when I meekly mention that my favorite band is from
there, XTC, and she gets this 'deer in the headlights' look... Oh, if she
had only said that she was his next door neighbor...
