So, as drinking alone is boring, I smoke weed instead. The best XTC album for that are English Settlement, as it unites both calm english countryside with harder, let's say urban, stuff; and the Dub Experiments, as it has the strangest atmosphere. Depends on what you do while you're stoned, really, for example, playing Playstation games requires Black Sea or the Live album. Especially when playing football games like FIFA 98 ( I know it's old, but cool), The Greatest Living Englishman by Newell & Partridge is a classic. You know, Alan Shearer scoring for England, that's a great living Englishman... Friends of The Hill, Finally getting caught up after a few crazy post-vacation weeks at work... Alien disks? I worked over this one during a brief spell of insomnia last night, sorry if I missed some of them already being listed: 1. Aliens Ate My Buick, Thomas Dolby 2. Surfing with the Alien, Joe Satriani 3. Dark side of the Moon, Pink Floyd 4. Phenomenon, UFO (best alien-related cover art of all time) 5. Alien Love Child, except they don't have an album out, and knowing Eric Johnson, they won't for another five years. Good band name, though. But seriously, my real Desert Island disks (today) would be: 1. The Shaming of the True, Kevin Gilbert 2. Kind of Blue, Miles Davis 3. Hard Day's Night, The Beatles 4. Physical Graffiti, Led Zeppelin 5. English Settlement, xTc Worst song in the history of foreverness, I have to go with Starship's We Built This City. Some of the 60's and 70's bubblegum stuff (while still bad) like Billy Don't be a Hero is at least goofy in a dumb kind of way that's nearly fun (only not) but I think Starship expected to be taken seriously. In reality, it's a three-fer. Worst band, song, and video, all rolled into one. Overheard in hell: "That's not hoopla! Omigod we're knee deep in....." Message-ID: <08B5DDC2BABCD311BFC6005004A884B013B765@mgcservices.com> In 6-196, Joe Funk referred to my favourite Firesign Theatre album, "Everything You Know is Wrong!", which is not only damn funny, but exemplifies what I love about this underappreciated comedy team. Not since the Goons has anyone really taken advantage of the freedoms afforded by audio-only comedy (nobody could rival the Goons themselves, but these guys seem to be the only ones to even begin to grasp the possibilites...). This album also motivated one of my life's longest and hardest "gotta find this record" odysseys; my beautiful original copy was crunched in a move, and it took me something like eight years to find another (pre e-Bay, it was actually found for me by my then-girlfriend in one of the coolest Christmas present surprises of my adult life). Some comedy historians have very unfairly branded them as "Stoner Humour", but they're quite a bit more than that; any "drugginess" in their stuff is more of the surreal/twisted logic variety than the "whoa, I'm so wasted; look at my laugh attacks and case of the munchies!" humour that one thinks of when that tag is used. I've always been more of a British comedy fan, but FT are probably my favourite American comedy team. "Honey, they're in EVERYBODY'S eggs!" Ed K. I'm pretty sure he didn't mean he'd stopped listening to *all* music; he just doesn't feel the need to be obsessively up-to-date--he long ago (like, 1980) stopped playing that particular game and has since pursued his own muse, which leads him (we know from other interviews) into Twenties jazz and Renaissance music, to name just two recent examples. Message-ID: <00c101bff288$9aa76940$7721fea9@user> Greetings, Chalklings!!! Thought I should stir things up with you youngsters (not necessarily YOU young XTC fans), and your predilection for Hip-Hop and instant mashed music... I was fortunate enough to be brought up in a household where the 3 B's were prevalent: Bach, Brubeck, Beatles. Due to this fact, I was partial to the Progressive movement of the early '70s, i.e: King Crimson, Genesis, ELP, Yes, Gentle Giant, et al..... On reflection I have to admit this was a fantastic era for any youngster whether they were musically inclined or not. This music was full of imagery and mystery! These acts were not in the least intimidated by the recording industry, and their unique-ness was not compromised. Needless to say, towards the end of the decade, this was no longer the case. The movement had become so self- involved and pretentious, that many people (including myself) revolted, and the Punk Revolution began. It was during this period that I became an XTC fan. They had the edge, but there was something different.... The lyrics were insightful and artsy, and the music had this peculiar quirkiness to it. And what is amazing to me is how XTC continued to morph.. They never got tied down to particular genre or style. Many folk categorize them as Pop. Short for popular... Maybe because some of Andy & Colleen's influences were mainstream... Or that it is the closest category to slot them into... I don't think they belong there.... Whatever the case, it brings me to my (FINALLY) point. "I think popular music in this country is one of the few things in the twentieth century that have made giant strides in reverse." -- Bing Crosby Well said, Bing! .... We started off with Ragtime,.. Big Band,... Jazz Combos, ...R&B, ...Rock, ..Funk, ..Teeny bop, .. now, Rap!! Rap!! To quote a friend of mine: "It (Rap) creates no new music, just recycles old, we need to recycle paper, glass and plastic, not music. What's next? Samples of other rapper sample based songs? " Pretty soon, the need for musicians in Pop music will no longer be necessary........ Why use musicians when you can slap together a conglomeration of samples that's only use is for the backdrop of some video featuring half-naked ladies and some egotistical idiot screaming about shooting some fuckin' cops!! ......the state of affairs of Pop Music today..... is FUCKIN' SCARY!!!!! I know every out-going generation is intimidated by the new.. I am speaking from the point of view of a Genesis Freak from the 70s (we were pretty harmless), who refuses to be one of the numbed-down, instant mashed, gene-sampled masses!!! UUUUUUUURRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!!! Thank God for XTC!!!! (Don't tell Andy I said that!!!) Joe "I think it's time for that Brain Salad Surgery" Funk

I think it's pretty catchy and would like to offer up this situation... Andy and Col leave Swindon and that wretched little island (what is it called again?) and move to Sunny LA, California. They hang out with Flea from RHCP who will be a type of Virgil for their descent into the valley. They will lunch and take meetings with the who's who of lalaland and eventually will record XtC's "Mac Daddy" album, sampling from the Beatles, Beach Boys, Led Zeppelin, Creme, Chicago and often, from themselves. It will be a smash hit record and will peak at #3 on the Billboard Charts. Soon thereafter, Humpty Hump will join the band and they will rename themselves: Butt Gravy. The first video from Mac Daddy will be "Pimpin' Ain't Easy" and will feature MC Andy and Grandmaster Colin M. wearing purple ziggy stardust wigs and lipsyncing while air guitaring on a stage in front of noone. There will be pyrotechnics and a cameo from David Lee Roth. Sound imposible? Maybe only because XtC is a good band. I don't make this stuff up, gang. There are precedents. Now, I've got a question. Is it wrong of me to listen to XtC about 86.7 percent of the time? I listen to other things, like NPR and Depeche Mode and the Beastie Boys, but mostly I listen to XtC. It's like, why bother with anything else? This is the zenith, the paramount, the apogee... Am I limiting myself or am I simply existing within a perfection where I am content to exist within and without? With such a diverse catalogue (and seemingly neverending) I don't have alot of need to explore. I feel that there is still continents to be discovered inside of what I've already heard and would like to know these artists intimately (like Casey Kasem). What do you say? It's time for recent thread wrap-up: Andy not listening to new music anymore: Well, it hasn't affected his musical output. XTC's last two records have broken a lot of new ground for the band. Actually, Andy's ignorance probably works in his favor because it eliminates any chance of XTC hopping on a musical bandwagon to boost lagging sales (like so many other artists their age feel compelled to do.) "Fossil Fuel": Of course, along with the improved sound, you do have to put up with tape dropouts, like the one at the end of "Towers of London." The end result is still better than a "remaster" like Squeeze's "Excess Moderation", which is plagued by all sorts of tape glitches. EM sounds like that bit on Todd Rundgren's "Intro" (from Something/Anything?) where he challenges listeners to find the various errors on any given record, like bad editing or mangled source tape, and then offers up aural examples of each glitch. Speaking of Todd, his new CD doesn't suck or anything, it's just spotty. As a marriage of music and CD-ROM imagery, I thought "The Individualist" (his most recent album of all-new songs, released in '95) was a a brilliant piece of work. (The songs don't work too well by themselves, however.) Styx: Unfortunately, they still are recording. They released an album in June of '99 entitled, "Brave New World." New CDs to recommend: To the person who was asking for new CD recommendations, I'd have to offer up Cardinal's "Congraduations" and "Ora Et Labora". Lyrically, the group has a lot in common with XTC, subject matter-wise (they did a whole album, "Congraduations", on one of Andy's pet subjects, school) and in terms of being articulate. Musically, they're in a similar pop-rock vein, alternating between sunny and rather downcast melodies, with the same emphasis on vocal harmonies that XTC has always displayed. I have a page for them up at <http://www.geocities.com/jumpthecup/cardinal.html> that links to their mp3.com site, so if you want, you can get a taste of them that way. -Dave O'Connell

Bands that were great & went bad - have to agree with Tom Kingston & everyone else who said REM. I love Monster - it took some time but finally it all made some kind of sense. Adventures in Hi-fi I can live with, but Up - after a month of trying to listen to it I gave in & sold it. I remember reading somewhere that REM were splitting up at the start of the millennium - 5 months & counting guys. Wes - I hope you won't try a creme spinach burrito again. Actually it sounds pretty vile - I can only ask "why?" or was it one of those it seemed a good idea at the time kind of thing? Time & Tide was there because John (Keel) reminded me how good it is, & I've been playing it a lot recently I also have a soft spot for Frenzy but in the end Time & Tide is, for me, the best Enz album. Verb Bag is even better - now all I have to do is live the life of someone who writes an autobiography. Um. Handy tip if you ever get Vida Loca stuck in your head. I unfortunately got it stuck on loop after going in a shop where they were playing it. LOUD. My solution is try adding the word 'tapioca' into the lyrics (the bit about 'her skin') and that seems to get rid of it. Robert - congratulations on being married & thanks for the offer. Living in Scotland is a bit of a cricket free zone, although our team made it to the world cup but were thrashed by everyone they played. (Bit like the footie.) Still England are doing better, which isn't much help to a supporter of New Zealand. Woodface - what can you say except it's a bloody fine album. Xtc content: about Nonsuch. I have a confession to make. I originally bought it on the back of seeing The Disappointed video and having listened to it for some time decided that I DIDN'T like it, so I sold it. Cue the calendar with all the dates peeling off & flying away. In my sticky mitts is a copy of Fossil Fuel. I play it & play it &V you get the picture. So I went out and bought a second hand copy and now it's the CD I would grab if the house was on fire. I think that getting older, wiser (?) more grey hairs whatever meant that I was 'ready' for Nonsuch. Marcus - how could I leave out David Sylvian? Secrets of the Beehive would be my choice - why can't we have 10 CDs? - as I saw Sylvian on tour just after it was released. It was more like a classical music concert than a gig, but still wonderful. Worse band? Ton Kingston's list included my nomination - Paper Lace. Guaranteed to send me screaming for the sick bucket (sorry Wes). Way sometime back in the Seventies I was staying with relatives in the Manchester area. There was a night club that had various 'popular' bands playing there. Paper Lace were due to arrive the next day I think but the club burned down. (It wasn't me, but draw your own conclusions). The reason why I remember this is I was woken up in the middle of the night & taken along to see the place burn down. Aye times waz 'ard then - we 'ad to make our own entertainment. The video I saw had the members of the band appearing out of thin air and running through a movie theater. At the end of the video the lead singer fades into the smoke his girlfriend has blown into his face. Has anyone ever heard of them? Any information would be greatly appreciated.
