Last night I watched Mommie Dearest in its entirety (I'd seen it befor but prior to my knowledge of Erica Wexler) so i could get a glimse of Andey's beloved, Erica Wexler. Well, if anyone is as stupid as me for doing that, don't waste your time. Her only scene is as a soap opera actress who is seen (side shot, about 8 feet away) inside a TV screen in the movie. I must admit I was hoping her part at least included a head shot but no such thing. Not that its a terrible movie but definitely not worth watching twice IMO. Although not strictly XTC, this hilarious spoof of Magical Mystery Tour and Help should not be missed. It's what the Beatles could have been doing if they had been smoking massive quantities of maryjane. Wait... In just a short week I will be embarking on perhaps one of the craziest trips of my life, bicycling across Iowa in the last week of July, to wit, RAGBRAI. Are there any other Chalkvillians out there senseless enough to make this trip, and more importantly can we get together. I think it originated from Island Records, but Casey kasem did step in with his nasty two cents worth once the ball got rolling. I believe it all ended with U2 giving permission for Negativland to put the single back into print (U2 were in the midle of their Zoo TV tour during this and couldent be seen as anti-sampling when they themselves were sampling video feed onstage). Island Records begrudgingly gave permission as well,(probably to get Negativland off their backs) as did the music publishing company involved. SST records worked out their legal mess with the band as well. The only person they needed to get clearances from was Kasey Kasem (the piece is full of hillarious 'blue' America's Top 40 outtakes). if he gave permission, they could re-release the work and maybe pay off some legal bills with it. This is where Casey Kasem was remarkably silent. The ONLY thing holding back the re-release of the U2 single is Kasem's signature. OK, I'm a little bored so I'll play-- Talented folks who have produced some very uninteresting music of late: David Byrne Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers (as a fan I've been very disappointed lately although Wildflowers had its moments) The Kinks-Still love them but To The Bone was too much of a mishmash. The original British version with all the unplugged stuff must have been better than the American version. This includes Dave Davies latest studio album although the demos album was pretty good (but most of that material was over a span of years). His Bottom Line live album recaptures the spirit of his best stuff. Ray--well he's still trotting around the globe. Maybe those 25 demos will find a home soon in finished form. The Rolling Stones-They've sucked for a long time. The last good Stones album was 15 odd years ago. Keith's solo stuff had more life in them than any band album has in quite some time. The Church-Their last couple of studio albums all had their moments. Their album of classic rock remakes is better than anything they've done since Gold Afternoon Fix. Still, a band that may return to form. U2-Achtung Baby was the last truly great album they've done. Alex Chilton-A very hit and miss solo career. On and on we could go where to stop? Xtc content: This hasn't become a problem for Xtc in their long career. Even their spotty albums have merit. Then again, I'd be biased.

Next: digression/clarification for the record: I LOVE 10cc (at least up to the point where Godley & Creme left the band and took all the good ideas with them). Art rock of the best sort - smart, incisive, brilliantly played and produced, with nary an ounce of prog-rock flab around the midriff, even after all these years. I imagine spruiking this band to XTC fans is a classic case of taking coals to Newcastle, but for younger viewers I'll gladly extoll the virtues of "Sheet Music" "The Original Soundtrack" and "How Dare You", all classic albums (not to mention those brilliant Hipgnosis covers). I equally adore Godley & Creme, whose triple-album magnum opus "Consequences" is one of my most prized possessions. All their 70's/80s albums - "L", "Freeze Frame" and "Ism-Ism" (aka "Snack Attack") are full of fantastic, brilliant, witty, bizarre and dare I say ... quirky ... stuff, which (with all due respect to the massive pop smarts of Messrs Stewart & Gouldman) leaves the post-split 10cc output in the shade IMO. All are highly recommended -- if you can find them. "L" is probably the rarest, having never been released on CD; Consequences is a close second - I believe there was a limited edition German CD version, now out of print, for which I would happily sell all my family members. (not much of a trade, is it?) [G&C of course also made a name as video makers (Frankie's "Two Tribes", Police's "Every Breath You Take" etc). I'd vote [1] for any video collaboration between them and XTC .. t'is a consummation devoutly to be wished ... though I presume they might be a bit pricey for our lads' budget.] * * * ALIEN ABDUCTION SCENARIO: A novel twist on the "Desert Island Discs" idea. As long as they don't want to give me an anal probe, I'm all for it. (Well, not on the first date, anyway). I'm assuming that we're not limited to rock music? No? OK. Apparently George Harrison felt that George Martin would tend to side with Macca, which is probably a fair cop, and that as usual George's input would be sidelined unless they had a producer favourable to him -- i.e. Jeff Lynne -- who was also acceptable to the other two. Given that Lynne has spent his life wanting to be The Beatles, I imagine he spent most of the sessions wearing Inconti-pants. I thought the singles were quite OK, for what they were (i.e. unnecessary). Jeff is an excellent producer, whatever his merits as a musician. (Sorry but I despise ELO). * * * GREAT OBSCURE ACTS Ellen McIlwaine: Scarily talented, she is one of THE great voices of our generation, a fearsome slide guitarist, a formidable songwriter and a damn good pianist too. Born in Nashville, she now lives in Canada. Her 70s albums "We The People", "Honky Tonk Angels" "The Real Ellen McIlwaine and "Everybody Needs It" are a motherlode of ripping originals and brilliant covers -- she idolises Hendrix, with whom she played briefly, and Jack Bruce. She also does perhaps the best cover of "Higher Ground" ever. * * * Whoever suggested the air-guitar idea for the "Stupidly Happy" video - 10/10!! I hope they do it. I think it would be brilliant.
