Just a coupla observations of The List:
First, WHAT is Andy doing on that show with all those little kids? He
stuck out like a sore thumb. I wanted to throttle that little girl. They
didnt get anything he said.
His mock shooting of that girl was brilliant!
Which brings me to point two: How can Andy act like that in front of a
live audience but be afraid of performing. He was a one man show.
BTW, I made a tape of WS on one side & AV1 on the other. I have since
recorded over AV1 with WS. I CANNOT listen to AV1 anymore. Or at least until
I get sick of WS. This album still fucking rocks!!!!!! Every damn note,
Every damn word. Come on , who wants to argue? Remember ,I got the Philly
cops on my side.

I've heard about Nick Drake for years----mostly because one of my favorite bands, Belle & Sebastian, are routinely accused of ripping him off---and so to hear that song in the VW ad made me hop on the music swapping site that starts with the letter N and download some of his stuff. I love it, I can see why Belle and Sebastian are said to sound like him and as soon as I see them, I'll be buying the remastered first 3 albums. I saw Mr. Patridge on VH1's "The List" tonight. He was kind of an odd choice to be sure--most of the panelists were in the mid-to-late 20's but he was funny, defended his choices well, did a scarily convincing air guitar for "Stairway to Heaven"---I'm sure there's a tennis racket somewhere in Swindon that's done time as a faux Les Paul--and looked rather spiffy in brown slacks/coat and purple shirt. Luckily, he wasn't wearing a cap to cover up the bald spot and looked handsome in his, er, um, quirky kind of way. Well done Andy! Neil Finn Inviting Fans Onstage to Sing: This also happens frequently at Squeeze shows (we had a couple dozen people onstage singing "Take Me I'm Yours" with Glenn & Co. when I went to see them in New Jersey last fall), as well as Glenn Tilbrook solo gigs. I did not participate in these shenanigans, which is just as well, because no human on this planet needs to be subjected to my horrid singing voice. Adult Alternative charts: It's really too bad that are so few of these stations in existence. I have heard "I'm The Man Who Murdered Love" on the Harrisburg affiliate for WXPN-FM (Philadelphia), but their signal only travels so far and stops just short of my hometown of York, PA. Getting played on this format is great, but it's not something that will boost an artist's fanbase much. "Stupidly Happy": Maybe this has already been pointed out, but is it just me or does the riff in "Stupidly Happy" sound almost exactly like the riff that anchors Third Eye Blind's current hit "Never Let You Go"? I really hate TEB, so it's a shame these two songs are so similar. Aside from that one number, I like Wasp Star, though. And "Stupidly Happy" should be the single, because it's the first XTC track in a long time to sound like the songs being played on top 40 radio. Sure, "Pumpkinhead" rocked, but it didn't exactly fit in with the "grunge" that was all the rage in '92. Cool obscure groups: Has anyone on the list heard of the New York band Cardinal? Not the one with Richard Davies & Eric Matthews in it (though that Cardinal was an excellent, if short-lived band.) I'm talking about the other Cardinal, the one who came out with a brilliant CD called "Congraduations" in '93 (which I've played on my college radio show for the past few years now), and after a long hiatus, have now released a follow-up, Ora Et Labora. I've been listening to their mp3s on mp3.com and they're way too talented of a band to be as obscure as they are right now. (I've never seen their records in stores, online or otherwise, apart from mp3.com.) "Goodnight Sally" and "Whichever Comes First" probably best showcase the group's sharp lyrics and unique pop melodies. Anyway, I've had a fanpage up for them at my Eric Matthews/Richard Davies website for a while now, which you check out by pointing your browser in the general direction of... <www.geocities.com/jumpthecup/cardinal.html> It also links to their mp3 site as well, where full-length songs can be listened to. Hey Dom, just wanted to get you back into posting mode. It's not the same without ya . . . I won't say whether it's better or worse, just not the same! Warren Butson mentioned the b-side to Ball Park Incident. Innit great? I thought I was the only person in the world to have discovered that little treasure. HINT - if any of you have a decent size 7" singles collection, check out the b-sides - especially from the 70s and 80s (before it became customary to put the "remix" - ie, the SAME F*CKING SONG on the b-side). Have fun! ---------------------- My Brown Guitar A Wonderful blues tune. Man, I really enjoyed playing this tune. And, after playing the album, I took another listen while I read the words, it makes perfect sense. It's a balanced blues tune and grooves! Good, stoic drumming for the blues enthusaist! But, Andy, what happened to "My Fano Guitar?" Boarded Up Nice click clocks with the clogs on the recording at the end, Andy! A Jazz drumming effort too. Although, I have to say, that "my" version was much better than the recorded drums. Sorry babe! I have a new version for this tune and would love to play it with other Chalker musicians, if the situation ever presents itself! Together, we can experience a new vibe on this one. Murdered/Love A blast to play to! The syncopations on this tune were all over the map! Definitely jangly~and enjoyable to playing the surfaces, adding lot of color to the song with the cymbals. The "ands" were everywhere! We're All Light Upbeat 8th Note tune. You have to nail the hi-hat sticking on this one, be tight and stay in the pocket with it! The most fun tune to play with. The back - beats were a blast! The lyrics are Andy at his best, I think! Colin was jamming on this tune too! Of course, my fantasy of playing this song in Andy's living room was destroyed when my f**king door bell rang and it was my neighbor. "Keep that racket down!" Yeah, ok! I went immediately back to the kit and jammed the syncopations out of the kit, just to stick it to my neighbor, and when I was done, I yelled "Yeah!" Broke a stick too! Standing in for Joe I enjoyed playing this little number. I especially liked the last section. It was right here, when I looked up at my poster in my studio, and read the quote over a picture of Buddy Rich about his choice of cymbals, "If I couldn't play Zildjians, I'd change instruments!" He is seated with a tuba around him, with a grin on his face! I got louder, and the door bell rang, but I ignored it. The review gets gushie here! You/The Clouds 8/8 time was really cool! Wonderful and gorgeous drums on this song. And with the Flugal horn, played by none other than Simon Gardner (any relations?), gave it such a rich and jazzy color to this song! Wounded Horse More "click clock" and thigh slapping by Prairie I presume! Blusey overtones, warm and cozy! Gave me the goose pimples playing this one! Good 8th note feel on the bass with the high hat/snare combination. It just fit for me, jamming along with the looped phrasing. It was just right and grooved big time! Church of Women The most organic tune on this album. Gorgeous vocals! Enter the Flugal again and Simon was indeed all over this tune! Fun mandolin with the drum phrasing and the back - beats! This is "THE" most XTC song on the record. It has their "signature." Great guitar riffs, and Colin sounded like he was having fun, and was very creative and melodic. There was a lot of tension and release on this song, more so than on any other song, and for me, it happened just before the guitar solo, which I thought was "way" too short - he should have gone another 8 - and, now I want to worship at the church of women. I just met a girl this week, and we have a date this weekend, and I wonder if there is any connection with the timing of that with the timing of me "discovering" this record? I was sold on the Flugals during this number and on the entire album! I always whistle that flugal line jingle where ever I go nowa|and then the accappella at the end of the tune! Beautiful! Way to go guys! Now everyone, clap on the 1 and 3 and 1 and 3, etca|more unsuspecting syncopations! The Maypole And what can say about this tune! An UNBELIEVEABLE NUMBER! The back beats on the kit were so cool! Good structure to this song, it had a "place to go," melodically. The release of the tension on this tune was just so right! It has wonderful phrasing to the structure of the verses, tenses, and bridge, middle 8's, etca|lot's of organic overtunes in this number too. It has such a gorgeous bridge to it, and you hold for 3 beats during each measure (add more tension) and it releases so well into the "Maypole" riffa|ahh! This song did spin me off my axis mundi man! (And I broke another stick!) Andy's guitar and all the effects and delay were rich, warm and oh so comforting from back in their day! Strong kick bass feel on this diddle. There is a sticking part to this song to, that if you really nail this with the snare hand, and get the 8th and 16th notes together one handed, the feel to the song is so cool. Drumming enthusiasts who can't get it one handed, try using both hands. The snare work during those two middle-8's are perfect! Then the bridgea|man, Colin just took off jamming! And, I hum along his bass line notesa|cool! This song reminded me terribly of Season's Cycle. Then at the end, the 4 voices take you awaya|..gorgeous! ------------------------------------------- There are two songs which pose the most difficulty for amateur drummers: We're All Light and Maypole. From just purely a "sticking" standpoint, you must nail them both to "stay in the pocket," or else you loose the feel and can destroy the song. There is a wonderful Drum Book which helps in this regard. Roy Burns and Joey Farris' _One Surface Learning_, and , _Second Line Rhythms_ (which has a ton of New Orleans phrasings and other wonderful stuff). I think people who complain about not getting into the web site shouldn't have the right to complain, because they can easliy download Flash and the other required programs. They don't cost anything. And if you're worried about your computer crashing well then you should think about getting a new computer with more memory.
