Dear all

I taped the interview Gary Crowley did on BBC London
Live with AP and CM which aired last Tuesday night 20th
June and was so pleased that I got that posting in just
in time before John went on his hols!!!! No-one has
mentioned it tho apart from Dave so maybe none of you
heard it.

Had a good time John?

Well the interview must have been taped because there
was a quiz and you had to SEND your answers in on
snailmail so if it had been live they would have had a
phone in. Anyhow, the interview was a scream of course
- lots of sarcasm and beer and wit flying round the air
and that was just in the living room in whch I was
listening. I want to transcribe it and post it to
Chalkhills but three problems - (1) you'd miss the
sarcasm and the inflection and that stuff (2) it would
fill an entire Chalkhills posting alone (would that be
alright? I don't have the technological knowhow to post
it to the web site) and (3) I haven't much time to do
it but would make time if people want. (DON'T email me
private about it - I'll make up my own mind! Just say
on Chalkhills. I'm sure it would be appreciated but it
would be very long and much of it won't be interesting
to READ.)

Anyway, give me time and I shall try and transcribe
it. Unfortinately I type faster than even Andy
Partridge talks so I might make stuff up along the way
waiting for him to catch up with me.

Love from BELINDA

Dave & I, too, attended The Orchid Show. We chose the Sunday matinee.
Unlike Lee, I liked parts of the middle third. Particularly the dance
that accompanied KISK. Jason, I did a double-take when you first appeared
onstage; for a moment I thought I'd seen you before on network television.
You've definitely got The Look.

Although I wore my Chalkhills tee, I didn't meet any other Chalkids among
the audience. I *did* meet an avid longtime fan, however, whose bright
preschooler requested Greenman during the children's Q&A afterward. Told
him about Chalkhills, so if he's lurking: "Hi, Jerry!"

All in all, a lighthearted, enjoyable pastime. Talented young dancers.
See it if you can.

Regards,

Hello Peeps

Although I've been subscribing for a couple of months now, this is my
first message to Chalkhills. I've been meaning to mail for a while now
and have been prompted by the BBC's use of Stupidly Happy in their Euro
2000 coverage.

Before I tell my reason for mailing, I'd just like to point out that I do
not watch the particular TV programme - it's wasn't my choice, my TV or my
house! However, I was at my sister in law's on a Sunday morning when I
heard XTC singing Grass. When I rushed in to my SIL's living room to find
out what was going on, she was watching some semi-religious prog which has
Toyah Willcox and that little Kevin bloke who cooks and is also on holiday
shows. There was some studio discussion going on about whether or not to
legalise cannabis and they kept playing Grass over some little film they'd
made. I thought this was rather amusing, after having read Colin's story
behind the song in the Song Stories book. My SIL had a bit of a chuckle
too when I explained it to her.

Anyway, now I've got my first time over with, I'll just tell you a little
bit about myself. My name's Kay, I'm 37, I live in Swindon and have been
an XTC fan since White Music. I strayed away a bit around Nonsuch,
Skylarking and Oranges and Lemons (came back for AV & WS) but am enjoying
catching up. I was lucky enough to see XTC live three times in my (and
their) youth, twice in Swindon at the Oasis and the Brunel Rooms and once
at Hammersmith Palais. Blew me away each time!

I would love to correspond by email with other fans and maybe meet up for
a chat and a beer (if you're not too far away!) Also, I have a few bits
of memorabilia (for example, a pack of Nonsuch playing cards) and I'd like
to know what they're worth. So if anyone is interested, please mail me on
kay@stracey.fsnet.co.uk.

I look forward to a mutually fulfilling relationship!

See y'all!

Yes, and I was listening to the Nicky Campbell show on Radio Five Live
recently. He said that he was a huge XTC fan, went on to wax lyrical about
Andy Partridge and said that he has always collected all of their singles.
The other people chatting all said how good the band were, too. Nicky said
that they'd have been massive by now if it wasn't for Andy's stage fright.

A few other worst albums by major artists:
Dark Horse- George Harrison(a tired, bloated, dispirited piece of crap, and
even Harrison admits it)
Sometime In New York City- John Lennon(Shrill, tuneless protest music. Next!)
Back To The Egg- Wings(the lyrics sound like Paulie made them up off the
top of his head as he went along. I'd even take Red Rose Speedway over this
one. Not even so bad it's good, just bad)
Seven And The Ragged Tiger- Duran Duran(I thought Rio and some of their
later albums had some pretty good songwriting. This one sounds like Simon
Lebon was doing too much coke while writing the lyrics, yet for some reason
this album was their biggest hit. Go figure.)
Everybody's Rockin'- Neil Young- I'd listen to almost anything by him, but
this wasn't even worth the dollar I paid for it. Rushed sounding rockabilly
throwaways. Only twenty-five minutes of music at that. (I consider Reactor
a pretty good slab of garage band sludge, and it does have an overlooked
gem in "Southern Pacific.")
Big Beat- I brought it to fill the holes in my Sparks collection, and I
wish I hadn't. The lyrics, always Ron Mael's best attribute, are tossed-off
and even gratuitously offensive without even satirical merit. Who are you
and what have you done with Ron Mael?
There's quite a few more I could think of if I tried. So many bands and
singer I otherwise respect have released at least one album worthy of using
the CD as a coaster or the vinyl as a frisbee. XTC is not one of them. Even
their worst albums have at least two or three great songs and the rest are,
well, just not as good as usual, or in the case of White Music a young band
trying out their legs in the studio.

Hi chalkies

On driving back home from a trip to sunny Liverpool I flicked the radio
off of the drivelling of Chris Moyles on Radio 1 to Radio 2 whereupon the
strains of The Man Who Murdered Love were detected. Great, I thought, XTC
on daytime radio! Only to find out it was some surreal programme called
Round Table where the DJ (in this case Steve Wright) and 3 "personalities"
(C list obviously.... Christopher Biggins, panto dame and fat
bloke.... Janey Lee Grace, another deejay (it says here)..... and Rustie
Lee, TV chef and noisy woman... And the verdict of these experts? Not a
hit, apparently, 2 4 out of 10s and a 6 from Rustie.
So what information did Steve Wright impart upon the listener about XTC?
Apparently they were "quite successful early 90s/late 80s, new wave band",
and the "panel" managed to remember MAking Plans for Nigel and Senses..
So apart from the most successful period being the other end of the 80s
they werent far off. Oh how you despair for British radio!

I just read that Eminem has just sold 4 million copies of what is, IMHO,
scary c-r-a-p, and the local radio stations in D.C./Baltimore don't have the
... ahem, GUMPTION to play anything from Wasp Star. I MEAN, Eminem? Judas
Priest, someone educate this generation in a hurry!

WRNR, 103.1 in Annapolis, Md., (www.wrnr.com) however, plays cuts from WS all
day long - I've been on vacation, enjoying the beautiful town I live in,
listening to the station, and flipping out everytime I hear a cut from WS. My
husband says, "You've got the CD, why don't you just PLAY it?" Not the same,
dear. Not the same. Ya ain't lived until you've heard TWATM while cruising
under the Chesapeake Bay Bridge!

Someone recently posted that VH-1 is broadcasting something on XTC July 14?
We just joined the real world and got DISH TV - my pacemaker can't stand it -

I guess nobody's interested in the listening parties

one today. I guess somebody in here was right when
they said nobody wanted to come to a chat with me as

parties. I tried the best I could. I made it at a
time of day where more people could come, but I guess
nobody wants to be in chat with me. But I'm not bad
in chat, but nobody will know that. I'm really
bothered by this. Some people in here don't seem to
think I have feelings. I spend my time getting the
chat room ready, and nobody shows up. Well if anybody
wants to start the listening parties I won't go,
because I seem to retract people. Thanks for
everything guys.

They'll make a good bit of cake from it. The Farelly Brothers are known
for their hip taste in music, already having included the Crash Test
Dummies version of Peter Pumpkinhead in Dumb and Dumber and featured
Jonathan Richman prominently in Kingpin and There's Something About Mary.
I'm planning on seeing it for the one reason the movie was filmed entirely
in my home state of Vermont, with the motel scene being filmed right around
the corner from where I live. I even auditioned as an extra; didn't get a
call, but there's a chance my gold Honda Accord makes a brief appearance in
a car chase scene, I was turning the corner in the other direction as the
car chase motorcade went by. It's going to be shown at the local drive-in
tonight(yes, we still have one in our area- a dying breed), so my wife and
I just might make a date.

knew I was right when the cast took a bow to I'd Like That. No one sitting
near me seemed too impressed when I kept saying "Hey, its XTC!"

I thought they were gonna. On the outside of the package, my copy said
"Containing the songs I'm The Man Who Murdered Love and Stupidly Happy"
which led me to believe Stupidly Happy would be the next single. Perhaps you
just tore the plastic off so quickly you didn't see that sticker.

_________

Also, someone a while ago argued with me about the tripple negative, saying
that :No, Nothing's Not Wrong cancelled itself out again, making it
"nothing's wrong" but that's not the case. The "No" has nothing to do with
the "Nothing's Not Wrong" it has to do with whatever question he's
answering. If someone said "Is something wrong?" you'd answer "No, Nothing's
wrong." meaning nothing was wrong, not that something was
wrong. So, someone asked him "Is something not wrong?" and he answered, "No,
nothing's not wrong" meaning something WAS wrong. You comprehend? It's
really hard to explain by typing, and I'm probably not getting my message
across.

________

Christopher Moll, I like your stuff. I downloaded the song you
recomended, and I think i'm gonna download some other stuff. You might want
to start a site at MP3.com cause I don't really like these 1drive ones,
they're kind of strange, and if you get a site on MP3.com, you might be
included on the Chalkhills Radio Station. 'tis a thought.
__________

I ment to send this message a while ago, but never did, so maybe some of
this might be a little old, but whatever. We'll deal, won't we? I'd like to
add that I just saw Me Myself and Irene, and I'd Like That was very
promonintly played, from the begining of the song to the end of the first
chorus. It was very nice. The Steely Dan covers.. .well, they were not so
good. I was particularly disgusted with Smash Mouth's cover of... well, I
forget wich song, but I know I didn't enjoy it. The movie itself was pretty
good, too. Not the best movie in the world, but there were parts that were
absolutely hilarious.

Reviewed in this week's NME: "The Man Who Murdered Love"

"Older students will remember Andy Partridge as the man who wrote the
Britpop book 20 years ago, then threw it away at regular intervals
thereafter between getting in touch with his bucolic side and collecting toy
soldiers. No wonder Blur tried to work with him once, only to give up on
discovering he's as mad as candyfloss. Still, just to remind wannabe
whippersnapper tunesmiths how it's done, XTC are back from various
excursions orchestral (and rather more interesting) with a straightforward
XTC pop album, from whence this straightforward XTC pop single hails.
Naturally, given Partridges's singular vision, it isn't straightforward
enough, tossing at least three times too many ideas into the pot until the
concoction begins repeating on this feebly-constituted contemporary
consumer, who is then forced to go and lie down in a dark room and listen to
Kid 606 for three days. There is a track on the new XTC album called
"Stupidly Happy", however, that is pure, dumb, simplistic pop genius. Too
simple clearly, to be released as an XTC single."

The review was written by Keith Cameron, one of the few NME writers I hold
any respect for, simply because he writes well and shares a love of both XTC
and Wire, which makes him a good man, even if he doesn't rate TMWML that
highly....

Steve.

I agree, considering some of the crap which did make it to the top 100
list, there should have been room for at least one, along with some other
notable absentees . XTC did however get a mention in the article under the
heading So British - it Hurts!
"A band who lived history in reverse - they started out futuristic and
ended up as medieval English peasants - XTC are memorable for their
marvellous tunes and for the revelation that, when the occasion merited,
Andy Partridge would literally be made to wear the Captain Cunt Hat"
If I were compiling a similar list, English Settlement would be up in the
top 10 along with Revolver and Never Mind the Bollocks (as would Foxtrot by
Genesis, another band who missed the list)

: What the fuck is up with "Q" magazine putting out a list of the "100 Best
: British Albums" and NOT ONE XTC ALBUM IS ON THE LIST!!!!!! I'm a little
: behind in my digests, but has this been discussed? I'm am outraged.
