One of the other panelists was this air-head 20-something girlwoman (apparently a 'star' from That 70's Show). She bitched unceasingly when Andy nominated ***** SPOILER ****** ***** SPOILER ****** ***** SPOILER ****** Frank Sinatra's 'My Way' as his third choice for most overplayed song (audience members were heard 'booing' at this). Airhead Chick said 'Overplayed? Frank Sinatra is a LEGEND!!!!!" to which Andy replied, "No, dear, he's a LEG-END, a leg end, like a cut of meat!" Too funny. Sadly but oddly appropriate, two of Andy's three choices were 'removed' by other panelists, but his number one choice came in third overall. Andy was full of mischief, dancing about the stage and cutting up like a schoolboy. I wanted desperately to meet him, but, alas, it was Not To Be. I own a PowerMac G3 and I feel sorry for you Windows based platform users. In college I used a PC. When it came time to get my own computer I asked my engineer friends for suggestions and they suggested I get a Mac. It is more user-friendly and doesn't crash........as often. TVT has never crashed my system. In fact, I seldom crash. I'm not saying I don't have trouble with my Mac, but I can only imagine the troubles I would have with a PC. I do admit that I don't have a plethora of software to choose from but if it's not made for Macintosh I probably don't need it anyway. My G3 did cost more than a Dell or a Compaq, but the more I hear of peoples trials and tribulations with their PC I think it has been worth it. I did catch an "interview" (if you can call it that) on local L.A. radio last Thursday, but the "L.A. Times" had listed the show for 4pm, when it was actually 2pm. When I called the station to point out the discrepancy and explain to them they will be pissing off a lot of fans if they don't correct this, some secretary gave the the old line about how the D.J. announces it all the time. Well, I listened all day & the interview was only mentioned about 30 mintutes before-hand. To make matters worse, sandwitched between a tedious eternity of a GAZILLION commercials, the person who did most of the talking was the fawning D.J. who asked very uninteresting questions and blathered on about what a huge fan she was. Hey, sis, we only have about 15 minutes to hear Andy & Colin--shut up about yourself! There were so many commercials, that when they returned from one break you could hear Andy & Colin making very loud & irreverent snoring sounds (yeah!). If anyone has any connections as to finding out when the "List" episode will be airing, please let it be known & end our frustration! jeannie

I happened upon Chalkhills minutes before the 'cast was to start. The boys were a bit early. It was strange watching Andy and Colin settle down with their beers with self-proclaimed naked-baby-photo tunes "Senses" and "Making Plans" playing behind them... "I've got 1-2-3-4-5.." <swig> "... and he loves to be spoken to.." <swig> During the "religous discussion" (following or preceeding "Dear God") there were several moments of uncomfortable silence after Andy's proclaimed rather strongly: "Why would there? Why would there be [a god]?" <chirp chirp> ... and then Marnie (DJ) stuttered forth some theory about energy in rocks and so forth, which Andy politely allowed. "Of course," he said. The DJ was not particularly super, but we might have had an MTV beach party: <Andy and Colin sitting uncomfortable and sweaty on beach chairs in their knickers and caps. MTV DUDE: "So like... you guys have been around a while n' stuff, been around the Britpop scene, you know, had some hits in the eighties, now you're kinda makin' a comeback, anyway, whaddya think of Oasis?" The DJ wasn't the seasoned XTC fanatic we would have hoped for, and the informed fans were not greatly involved in the Q&A process, but really, what were we expecting? (not much, I.) Colin sounded much older than he looked, in his hoarse Swindonian accent, like some old buttered colonel. "Ahh.. yes, indeed... in my twenties, I had the naivete.. in my thirties I simply worried quite a bit... in my forties, well I'd like to think I act my age [my memory isn't phonographic, so this is all paraphrase]." Andy was particularly lewd, flirtacious, and politically incorrect throughout. I want to see an animated feature with Mr. Partridge playing all the voice parts. And I want him to have complete creative control. We'd probably see psychadelic animated pornography, with sprouting phalluses and multicolored flowers and marching bands and mile-thick metaphors. It would be completely out of control and it would be wonderful. I didn't bother trying to enter the chat room. It involved some tedious registration process which would have added my name and address to another mailing list. Sounds like most of the intelligent (read: Chalkhills-based) questions were ignored anyway. So. Seems we don't hold much in the way of market share... just killed me to hear Marnie say, "doesn't look like there's anyone in the chat room..." and then Partsy make some innocent wisecrack about it but me thinking... HEY, we're here, boarded up, waiting for a chance to be heard! Please air our obsure minutiae! I noticed Mr. Partridge (and to a much lesser extent, Mr. Moulding) bobbing and tapping his pants happily to the WS tunes. During one segment I got close to hearing/seeing "WS Live". Something very out of the ordinary happened to me this weekend: I actually
went to see a band that I liked, that I've liked for a long time, and
enjoyed the gig!
Sad, isn't it, when that's such a rarity?
Anyway, I went to see the The, an old favourite from when I was relatively
cool (not the grumbling old fart I am now), and they were great: Matt
Johnson was in fine form, his current band a relatively straightforward
guitar-bass-drums combo (no Marr this time, though), did quite a bit off of
their (his?) new album (not their best, but not bad at all) and a fairly
decent selection of older stuff (no keyboards for the most part, but the
drummer had a harmonium that was used on some of the older songs). The lack
of people who at one time I would have considered "usual suspects" to run
into at a gig like this, and the presence of too many, well, "fratty"
jockoid regular guy types was a little depressing (I'm not judging people
who don't dress by some bullshit standard of "cool", or who discovered
anything later than me or anything like that - it's just an attitude thing,
that whole "getting into a fight is almost as good a way of ending an
evening as getting laid" kind of vibe that some of these guys give off), but
on the whole I was able to tune out the audience and just enjoy the band.
It's been a hell of a long time. I don't know if I'd call them a
"lost" band, as he's still making music, but I haven't exactly heard
anything of theirs on my local fake alternatriod station (which goes by the
name "X FM" - how's that for the cheesiest, stupidest possible name for such
a station?).
To the person who mentioned Iron Chef recently:
Yes! This show rocks! I've been watching it for months now, and quite a few
catch phrases have made their way into my speech patterns, as well as those
of my friends. I think. ("Fukui-san?" "Yes, Ohta, go!"). Delicious! The one
they showed a couple of weeks ago where I am was during "girl's festival"
and the entire panel was giggling actresses! I love this show. Two extra
types of Iron Chef we thought of (in addition to Japanese, Chinese, French
and Italian): "Iron Chef Broke" ("Ah, yes, salt, very interesting") and
"Iron Chef Drunk".
Split Enz: one of the first supposed "new wave" bands that I got into (along
with you-know-who) way back when. They were very popular here in Canada;
just about everyone I know has, or used to have (in the case of those fools
who ditched their vinyl) a copy of True Colours; seems like it was
everyone's Christmas present that year (I have two copies, and I don't know
how). "One Step Ahead" and of course "Six Months in a Leaky Boat" were
pretty big hits as well, as I recall.
Andy does not sound like Sting. If anything "You and the Clouds" has a bit
of an echo of earlier Andy, circa "Statue of Liberty" (just a bit, don't
freak out...). It's not the famous "seal bark" necessarily, but it does seem
to twist and bend in a manner somewhat reminiscent of the early stuff.
I'm sure that there are other things I could natter on about, but suddenly I
am run over by a truck.

The first 2 or 3 albums were great but they soon lost track when disco struck and doom went out of fashion." Yeah, this was one of the few bands besides XTC I tried to collect EVERYTHING from. For a while I even had this cool live bootleg tape that was recorded through the mixing board. (...I lost it the second time my car and all my tapes were stolen...) Unfortunately, I never got to SEE them play live. But you're right, those first three albums are fantastic, and their sound always struck me as, "...a band of rock-and-roll ghosts," spooky and etherial and spot on artistic/progressive. Then they had to change their name to CS Angels in the states and it was a downhill slide to the cutout bins from there. I have this collection called Teenage Kicks and Starry Eyes (UK Pop Vol. 1 and 2), and the latter one has two great groups that I haven't heard about much. The first one is Revellios (sp?). I believe they're from Scotland, and they had a song called, "Where's the Boy For Me?". Then they changed their name to the Rezellios (sp), or was it the other way around. The second group were The Modettes. They were an international group, the lead singer was from French, there was an American and one from England. Their claim to fame was the single, White Mice". Even though I can't understand what Romona (the lead singer) is singing, the song still rocks. I'm just curious if there are any of their albums on CD? This is probably the Most Commercial album the band has made since Oranges & Lemons in terms of sales. I'd include Nonesuch, but it was a little too obscure for the average listener with tunes like That Wave and Bungalow (Despite previous protests about the status of Nonesuch--there are parts that are among their best work. It could have been pruned a bit. There are a couple of b side quality tracks that made the album). The question remains whether the band will be able to reach the younger fans. The way to do that is MTV (although they play mostly rap videos seems to me that the hip hop beat used one track might make it work--would the band spring for a video? If they do really they should contact Ralph Bakshi to do a computer animated short for it using Andy's illustrations as a basis). On the CD player -- The Name of This Band is Talking Heads (Thanks to radiosinmotion for his help with remastering the sound--great job guy!). Whatever happened to Kate Bush? She hasn't released an album in ages. Anybody know? Did Tori Amos uses the elves to drive her out of the music biz? In a musical wrestling match I'd pick Kate. She has more depth as a songwriter. Tori is growing on me (somewhat like a fungus). I personally think that Andy & Colin should start a Monkees tribute album (either that or Black Sabbath--that would be interesting). Both would be left field choices...I personally would love to see both guys attempt a "covers" album of eccentric, obscure bands that they like. It would be fun. The only reactions from my parents to anything I listened to would usually be something of the "Turn that down" variety. The few exceptions I remember were most amusing. Mom On the PLASMATICS "New Hope For the Wretched" LP. "This is just sick. What is this shit?" I think my mom actually said the word shit, which at the time was unthinkable in our house. Perhaps the fact that someone who shared her name (Wendy) would go around with duct tape on her nipples didn't agree with her. I think the Plasmatics were the cause of my only parental musical disagreement. They barred me from going to see The Plasmatics at wherever they were playing in RI at the time. Turned out to be a blessing because my friends were denied access for being too young(the age was 19 back then). R.I.P. Wendy O. Mom on Elvis Costello's "Shot With His Own Gun"...."I am so sick of that song. When will you play something else? ...then she sang..."Shot with his own gunnnnnnn....BORING!!!" Dad on "Filet of Soul" from the Dead Milkman's debut "Big Lizard in My Backyard"..."This is fun." There exists in the bowels of my video collection, a home video of my father doing a frightening dance and snapping his fingers along to the beat. But the most firghtening of all... Dad on "Add it Up" on the Violent Femmes first album..."This is really good." Again the dancing and finger snapping. To see my father , who looks like a cross between Dick Van Patten and Today Show Weatherman Willard Scot sing "Why can't I get just one fuck?" is something that I simply can never describe. Further, he made a tape of it and played it in his office!!!! I know because I witnessed it. He probably got away with it becuase he co-owned the place. Oddly I would use parental disfavour as an excuse to return a record I didn't like. Disappointed that my Dead Kennedy's FRESH FRUIT FOR ROTTING VEGATABLES didn't include the original superior version of "Holiday in Cambodia" or "Police Truck"(and for some other reason I can't remember, considering I do have a vinyl copy from that time), I brought it back to the store and told them I was returning it because my parents didn't approve. Who could argue with that? It was an import I think. I exchanged it for Elvis Costello's TAKING LIBERTIES and another disc you may have heard of...BLACK SEA(RSO version). To this day, it still boggles my mind that XTC once shared a label(sort of) with the soundtrack to GREASE. Incidentally, TIMES SQUARE will be coming to video courtesy of Anchor Bay sometime within the next year. When, who knows. My mother and father like music(mostly jazz).
