We are hoping for a prominent UK chart position. In a display of crass
unchalkhillian commerciality I would like to ask for your help in this as
it is all down to the number of sales we do in the shops next week!
Please call your local record shops and pre-order the cd to make sure that
they have enough copies for your and all your friends.
I would just like to point out that on Monday there will only be 303
shopping days left to Christmas. What better Christmas present could you

When I posted my '98 fave list a while back, I mentioned that I had discovered a disc by The Moles, led by Richard Davies...who worked with Eric Matthews under the guise of Cardinal. I recieved an email soon after that posting from a splendid gal who later sent me recorded copies of Richard Davies' released material...as well as some awfully gear b-side schtuff. Sadly, & I'm ashamed to admit this, I've never thanked her...and worse, I can't remember her name or her email address. Who are you? If you read this, please drop me a line, I'd love to talk to you. Lastly...I've seen a lot of bootleg material of the lads for sale lately online...esp on the ebay auction site, and would like to advise potential buyers to think twice before doing so. There are a lot of people selling cdr copies of boots, and copies of videos as well...and it is VERY WRONG for these people to make $ off of the name XTC! I've obtained a shload of XTC audio & video boots over the years, and have never paid for any of it. I know you want to hear it...so do I...but I'm telling you that it can all be obtained through trades. The ebay site is full of cdr sales, many of which do not include the information that they are copied cd's(cdr's)...so, these sellers aren't just ripping off XTC...they're ripping you off as well...and by purchasing their material you are helping them to do both. Please, just think about what it is that you are buying. "Ship Trapped" and "I Don't Want to Be Here" - Agreed, two fantastic tracks, but I see why Andy wouldn't want to do these in their current form. As noted, the intended topic of Ship deals with their problems with Virgin, although there's only one line that mentions it with any degree of specificity. To me the song can be about many things, as suggested, personal relationships, self-reflection, etc. Secondly, "I don't Want to Be Here" sounds like a song resulting from his divorce, and recently being remarried, I can totally understand why the track would no longer hold as much appeal for him -- add to that that he says he wrote it for Cathy Dennis. My suggestion (one of you privileged dozen pass this on to Andy, OK?): Transform these songs into new ones with new lyrics, a la "Goodbye Humanosaurus" to "Then She Appeared." I'm in agreement with everyone else, the song structures, harmonies and melodies are too good to toss (or let someone else sing), but perhaps a new lyrical treatment with new subject matter could be just the trick. Like Then She Appeared, maybe a future album title would bubble to the surface from the resulting tracks. 1. Frivolous Tonight - Downloaded the first minute from Mark's site, and I feel confident that this will be my favorite work from Colin since English Settlement and the Dukes. The primary word that comes to mind as I listen to the grand excerpt over and over is "glorious." Makes me giddy -- I must admit, I was a bit apprehensive over his song titles, but Frivolous Tonight makes me WAW for Fruit Nut -- er, wait, makes my flag unfurl! Sorry, a bit tired (yon, ahem, yawn). 3. I'd Like That (supersonic semi-spoiler) - Also listened to this track via liquid audio from the tvt site (you'll notice I broke my self-imposed AV1 blackout, thus qualifying me for super-value radical sainthood like a rocket from a bottle shot free - what can I say? The arguments made sense, and nothing positive ever came from denying one's most glorious desires). The song has remained in my head, creep about my brain for the last 24 hours. I can't wait to hear it on cd, it's fantastic. Dug into the exotic feast before grace was finished, and am loving every succulent mouthful. Interestingly, having never heard a demo of the song, I was surprised how organic and bare this track is -- I'd say it's the most simply-arranged finished recording during this detailed and polished phase of xtc (maybe ever, relative to where they are in terms of the thoughts put into the arrangements). However there's some very interesting swirly sounds lurking in the background that liquid audio didn't fully accentuate, plus a very interesting drum or beat sound -- maybe not as simple as first glance would reveal. And of course, tuneful as all get- out. I can't wait to hear how it contrasts following the complexity of the album opener River of Orchids. What more to say but "5 days." Will J. I like reading about the opinions of those lucky enough to have acquired advanced copies and demos of AV1. I've been listening to the audio clips over at the Cooking Vinyl site. I think it's great that they have been providing one-minute clips to sample for each of the tracks. Today's clip is "Fruit Nut". It's adorable. It's very Broadway musical sounding. Sort of like something that could have fit into Singin' In The Rain. It's my favorite so far, but I'm sure the others will grow on me, too. Real Audio is neat, but it's not exactly crystal clear. I'm sorry but you always seem to find some reason not to feel happy
or elated about XTC events and releases.
What i can't fathom is how reading about an album can spoil it for

It's in section three, page 36. According to the ad, the event is being billed as "A special discussion and signing". The ad also states that its at 7:00 pm on the 25th. Also interesting to note that they used the image of the apple filled with text for the ad instead of the record cover. I think that image is nearly as suggestive as the peacock feather.

I just back from a meeting in Annapolis, Maryland, which meant that I
was in receiving distance of the DC/Baltimore area's only decent radio
station. (I agree with you completely about WHFS.)
At 7:23 yesterday morning, I heard new XTC ("I'd Like That") on the
radio, and it was an extremely fulfilling experience. The only thing
that pissed me off was the DJ saying, after the song played, that
"that was Andy Partridge and XTC, sounding a lot like Paul McCartney."
I'm really afraid that people are not going to be able to get beyond
the album's obvious "tips of the hat" to other artists and get down to
the originality underneath. Yes, they're influenced by various bands,
and you can hear that influence, but much as you can hear the
influence of Bach on Mozart. Would you call Mozart derivative?
XTC -- esp. Andy -- is _building_ on the work of the artists before
them/him, not ripping them off (which is the impression I'm afraid
some people are going to get if DJs and critics, for ease of
reference, keep comparing them to the Beatles, Beach Boys, Kinks,
etc.).
And now for something completely different: What's all this then about

You can't imagine how chuffed (!!) I was to read
Chalkhills 5-93. I honestly thought that I was alone in thinking 'Prince
of Orange' was one of Andys best. After all , I don't believe its ever
been mentioned by anyone when talking about their fave demo tracks. Then
along comes 5-93 and it gets - count em - TWO mentions in one issue.

what 'side product' the song was used for , can you let me know ? (Mr.
Strijbos ?!!) What can I say ? The chorus is great , the
miles-out-of-time piano sublime......its a classic. Please let it be on

Incidentally , IMHO , Apple Venus is a nothing title and the peacock
cover is pretty bland. After 7 years maybe the guys could've come up
with something a little more exciting. Still - as long as the music is
good who really cares about that stuff anyway ?
