Jennifer,

I'll be at the "Andy at Tower Records on Newbury Street" EVENT next week. I
simply can't wait! And every day I open my mailbox hoping to see AV1 there.

See you other greater Bostonians there, too!

We are hoping for a prominent UK chart position. In a display of crass
unchalkhillian commerciality I would like to ask for your help in this as
it is all down to the number of sales we do in the shops next week!

Please call your local record shops and pre-order the cd to make sure that
they have enough copies for your and all your friends.

I would just like to point out that on Monday there will only be 303
shopping days left to Christmas. What better Christmas present could you
give someone than AV1? Do your Christmas shoping next week!

Fingers crossed

Chalkies:

Thanks to everyone who contributed ideas for my interview with
Mr. Partridge....I got a call from my editor, who had been alerted by
Partsy's publicist, and was told that Andy had had enough of the Q&A thingy
for one day, and that I would have to wait another week to talk to our
boy-wonder...ahhh well, that's not quite this world over, though the wait
is agonizing, and the pre-interview jitters were getting the better of
me...and now I get to have them all over again, JOY!

When I posted my '98 fave list a while back, I mentioned that I had
discovered a disc by The Moles, led by Richard Davies...who worked with
Eric Matthews under the guise of Cardinal. I recieved an email soon after
that posting from a splendid gal who later sent me recorded copies of
Richard Davies' released material...as well as some awfully gear b-side
schtuff. Sadly, & I'm ashamed to admit this, I've never thanked her...and
worse, I can't remember her name or her email address. Who are you? If you
read this, please drop me a line, I'd love to talk to you.

Lastly...I've seen a lot of bootleg material of the lads for sale lately
online...esp on the ebay auction site, and would like to advise potential
buyers to think twice before doing so. There are a lot of people selling
cdr copies of boots, and copies of videos as well...and it is VERY WRONG
for these people to make $ off of the name XTC! I've obtained a shload of
XTC audio & video boots over the years, and have never paid for any of it.
I know you want to hear it...so do I...but I'm telling you that it can all
be obtained through trades. The ebay site is full of cdr sales, many of
which do not include the information that they are copied cd's(cdr's)...so,
these sellers aren't just ripping off XTC...they're ripping you off as
well...and by purchasing their material you are helping them to do both.
Please, just think about what it is that you are buying.

I can only view this wreck with the aid of a drink and a mirror,

My friendly local record shop (Rough Trade, Nottinghill, London #14.99) let
me buy my copy early this lunchtime... so there I stood at work... big
chunky Sennheiser at rather high volume configuring a new Mac and... no-one
interrupted me, I could listen to the whole album.

Well, as I hadn't checked out the track list on Chalkhills I didn't know
that one of my favourite demos isn't on there (You and the clouds...) but
never mind. I'm tempted to give details of the packaging but that would
spoil things for y'all.

On the peacock orientation debate side of things, my copy's artwork was
pointy-end to the left.

Oh for you vinyl types I have seen it, it exists. When the assistant went
downstairs to get my copy she brought the album up too. I might go back and
buy it. What do you mean I haven't got a record player? That's right, time
to get on the completist bandwagon.

As everybody's going to write reams and reams reviewing AV1 I'm not going to
say a word. Oh, all right. Think English Express or Big Settlement.

Now I've heard the final version - yes! "Easter Theatre" for a single please

That's enough, I've got servers to ruin, er, I mean optimize.

Subject: a few more gurgles

Bubbling up to the surface:

1. "Ship Trapped" and "I Don't Want to Be Here" - Agreed, two fantastic
tracks, but I see why Andy wouldn't want to do these in their current
form. As noted, the intended topic of Ship deals with their problems with
Virgin, although there's only one line that mentions it with any degree of
specificity. To me the song can be about many things, as suggested,
personal relationships, self-reflection, etc.

Secondly, "I don't Want to Be Here" sounds like a song resulting from his
divorce, and recently being remarried, I can totally understand why the
track would no longer hold as much appeal for him -- add to that that he
says he wrote it for Cathy Dennis.

My suggestion (one of you privileged dozen pass this on to Andy, OK?):
Transform these songs into new ones with new lyrics, a la "Goodbye
Humanosaurus" to "Then She Appeared." I'm in agreement with everyone else,
the song structures, harmonies and melodies are too good to toss (or let
someone else sing), but perhaps a new lyrical treatment with new subject
matter could be just the trick. Like Then She Appeared, maybe a future
album title would bubble to the surface from the resulting tracks.

1. Frivolous Tonight - Downloaded the first minute from Mark's site, and I
feel confident that this will be my favorite work from Colin since English
Settlement and the Dukes. The primary word that comes to mind as I listen
to the grand excerpt over and over is "glorious." Makes me giddy -- I must
admit, I was a bit apprehensive over his song titles, but Frivolous Tonight
makes me WAW for Fruit Nut -- er, wait, makes my flag unfurl! Sorry, a bit
tired (yon, ahem, yawn).

3. I'd Like That (supersonic semi-spoiler) - Also listened to this track
via liquid audio from the tvt site (you'll notice I broke my self-imposed
AV1 blackout, thus qualifying me for super-value radical sainthood like a
rocket from a bottle shot free - what can I say? The arguments made sense,
and nothing positive ever came from denying one's most glorious
desires). The song has remained in my head, creep about my brain for the
last 24 hours. I can't wait to hear it on cd, it's fantastic. Dug into the
exotic feast before grace was finished, and am loving every succulent
mouthful. Interestingly, having never heard a demo of the song, I was
surprised how organic and bare this track is -- I'd say it's the most
simply-arranged finished recording during this detailed and polished phase
of xtc (maybe ever, relative to where they are in terms of the thoughts put
into the arrangements). However there's some very interesting swirly sounds
lurking in the background that liquid audio didn't fully accentuate, plus a
very interesting drum or beat sound -- maybe not as simple as first glance
would reveal. And of course, tuneful as all get- out. I can't wait to hear
how it contrasts following the complexity of the album opener River of
Orchids.

What more to say but "5 days."

Hello all,

I just thought I'd introduce myself to the fellow XTC
fans on the list since I have just subscribed today.
A few bits about myself: I am a 24 year old male from
Wisconsin. I discovered the music of XTC about 3 years
ago from a college roomate. I'd have to say XTC is one
of my favorite bands of all time and certainly my
favorite of those currently making music. I have all of
their albums on CD except for GO2 and the remix experiments.
I am, of course, incredibly psyched about the upcoming
Apple Venus Vol. 1 release and have my copy advance
ordered already.

So there you have it. I'm sure I'm in for some lively
discussion about the upcoming album.

Andy Partridge taped Space Ghost this morning as planned. Some
friends of mine work at Cartoon Network and were able to get me onto
the set. I'll relay my full story when I get home from work, but be
assured that he was an absolutely awesome guest. When I asked him to
sign my box from Transistor Blast, he laughed and said, "You actually
bought that?"

'Twas the thrill of a lifetime.

One of the better questions was, "Who is Nigel and are your plans for
him good or evil?"

Beware, another lurker emerges!

If anyone has contacts w/Andy, pass this along...

OK, so some of us may live in the cultural black hole of the South (I
haven't figured if Mardi Gras is an argument for or against that
statement), but does that those of us with excellent musical taste
should have to suffer needlessly (to say nothing of the past seven
years), knowing you've passed through the States, but have given the
whole South a miss?! C'mon, I'd even drive to Atlanta for this!

Aside: Believe it or not, around the release of _Nonsuch_ I was visiting
NYC for the first time and staying at the Plaza, right across from
Central Park, right at the time Andy was doing his interview there. Of
course, I only found out about it when I returned to Louisiana & saw it
on MTV. "Chagrined" does not describe my state. I've gotta right that
wrong, or my *whole life* will be whiled away thinking of my near-miss
with genius. (OK, so maybe that was a little theatrical, but I'm going
for sympathy here).

Can't wait for next week and the latest addition to my (near-complete)
XTC collection! I've already got a little space there for it amongst my
alphabetized CDs!

OK, according to Molly, we should cease discussion of AV1 for a few
more days. She also doesn't want us to talk about all the XTC merch
we have purchased, wish we could purchase, or plan on purchasing
because SHE can't afford them. Next thing you know, she's gonna get
upset at the people who have the opportunity to meet Colin and Andy on
the upcoming bookstore tour. By other people's rules we are also not
supposed to talk about religion or how it relates to certain lyrics.
We ARE however encouraged to talk about female anatomy and how much
David Oh's posts annoy us. If we are not free to discuss XTC and
their music for fear of making Miss Molly jealous, what are we to do?
Well, I won't let her stop me and I'm sure none of the rest of you
will be discouraged either! I like reading about the opinions of
those lucky enough to have acquired advanced copies and demos of AV1.
I've been listening to the audio clips over at the Cooking Vinyl
site. I think it's great that they have been providing one-minute
clips to sample for each of the tracks. Today's clip is "Fruit Nut".
It's adorable. It's very Broadway musical sounding. Sort of like
something that could have fit into Singin' In The Rain. It's my
favorite so far, but I'm sure the others will grow on me, too. Real
Audio is neat, but it's not exactly crystal clear.

Mitch,

Here's the link to the Borders site:

And here's what they said at that link:

XTC, Apple Venus, vol 1
Chicago, IL (Phone 312.573.0564)
Thursday, February 25, 1999, at 7:00 pm.
Come meet XTC as they sign their new cd.

I have no other confirmation of the time... being the music biz, I imagine
that it could be somewhat variable...

I got this info by calling the phone number above:
Borders is at the corner of Michigan Ave. and Pearson St., across from
Watertower Place.
Bus service: 151 Sheridan
Nearest L stop is Chicago Ave. & State St.

I didn't talk to a human, but did listen to the event list on the phone
machine. They did confirm the appearance of Mr. Partridge, and had many nice
things to say about him. I would say they "gushed" a bit. More than a bit.

"They are back in Full Force" "orchestral arrangements with diverse rhythms
and intensly personal lyrics" "Please join us for this rare opportunity to
meet one of the most inventive minds in pop music"

Finally: "a signing and discussion only, there will be no performance"

All the other events in the message were simply time and event description,
no elaboration on the person making the appearance. I think they might be
about as excited as we are.

Call the number above, and press "2" to get to the events listing. You'll
have to listen to other event first. They do also state that there is
another author event taking place at 6:00pm. There was no mention of a time
anywhere in the message for Andy's visit, but it did come after the 6:00pm
event.

Dear Chalkers,

oh please... i think everybody behaved pretty good. Hardly a word was
said by those lucky enough to own it already

then don't!
I'm sorry but you always seem to find some reason not to feel happy
or elated about XTC events and releases.
What i can't fathom is how reading about an album can spoil it for
you. Don't you read magazine reviews and such?

This week's Chicago Reader (weekly events paper) has a 1/4 page ad for
Andy's appearance at Borders. It's in section three, page 36.
According to the ad, the event is being billed as "A special
discussion and signing". The ad also states that its at 7:00 pm on the
25th. Also interesting to note that they used the image of the apple
filled with text for the ad instead of the record cover. I think that
image is nearly as suggestive as the peacock feather.

Subject: Fears for the future

Hi:

John Irvine asked:
>Of course my new year's resolution (no 99.1 WHFS in '99) may hinder
me in that regard. Anyone in the DC/Baltimore area heard any AV1 on
the airwaves?<

I just back from a meeting in Annapolis, Maryland, which meant that I
was in receiving distance of the DC/Baltimore area's only decent radio
station. (I agree with you completely about WHFS.)

At 7:23 yesterday morning, I heard new XTC ("I'd Like That") on the
radio, and it was an extremely fulfilling experience. The only thing
that pissed me off was the DJ saying, after the song played, that
"that was Andy Partridge and XTC, sounding a lot like Paul McCartney."
I'm really afraid that people are not going to be able to get beyond
the album's obvious "tips of the hat" to other artists and get down to
the originality underneath. Yes, they're influenced by various bands,
and you can hear that influence, but much as you can hear the
influence of Bach on Mozart. Would you call Mozart derivative?

XTC -- esp. Andy -- is _building_ on the work of the artists before
them/him, not ripping them off (which is the impression I'm afraid
some people are going to get if DJs and critics, for ease of
reference, keep comparing them to the Beatles, Beach Boys, Kinks,
etc.).

And now for something completely different: What's all this then about
the band being in Philly on the 22nd? Are they going to be there or
not? Can anyone confirm or deny this?

Finally, Molly asked:
>So please I ask you wait until the people get it. <

But Molly, I thought you said we just don't get it! ;^)

It sounds like extremely distorted guitar noise, a mixture of feedback
and harmonics. But since I don't play electric guitar I wouldn't have
the faintest idea how to duplicate it.

Subject: Cleveland-Toronto urgent carpool request

Attention Cleveland Area Chalkers:

Anyone planning to go from Northeast Ohio to Toronto to see Andy? I'm
desperate to go, but have no transport. Let's carpool! I'm up for any time
from Friday evening to Sunday afternoon. If you want to do it all in one
day on Saturday I'm up for that too. As long as I don't have to miss work,
any schedule that includes being at the Toronto Tower Records at 2 pm on
Saturday Feb 27, 1999 is dandy with me.

We could even stop in Buffalo and pick up Molly!

I will help with the driving and gas money, and I've been to Toronto a few
times so I can even serve as a tour guide, recommending things to see and
do and eat etc.

Not only that, but I'm a scintillating conversationalist, which will no
doubt come in handy over 12 hours of driving. But you don't have to spend
time with me outside of the car, either, if you don't want to. I just need
a ride.

Whadaya say? Wanna take a road trip? Anyone? Anyone? Please write!

Chalkie Hillside Village,

Has anyone else noticed that both California appearances by Andy & Colin
are at VIRGIN megastores?! Is this irony or what? Does the band know?
How did they get them to do it? Will Andy perform "I Don't Want To Be
Here"?

I haven't heard AV1 on HFS yet, but I'm going to follow Nicole's lead
and e-mail Alan Scott (Lou Brutus doesn't have e-mail yet).

Hey! How about XTC on Loveline? I'd bet Andy would be a hoot answering
questions on orgasmic dysfunction!

I checked Sam Goody's (music mega-chain) and while the latest issue of
the in-store mag "Request" says AV1 is releasing 3/22 (just like Tower),
the clerk at the counter had the correct date in her book. While I won't
buy it there (I'll go to Best Buy so that I can afford two copies), it's
good to know mainstream Mall stores have the right info. They still
weren't displayed in the "Upcoming Releases" sign, though.

Hey Dom! When Melissa and I are in London March 18-25, how about giving
us a tour of your "office building"?

Tuesday's child is full of grace,
Neal

Hi C People !,
You can't imagine how chuffed (!!) I was to read
Chalkhills 5-93. I honestly thought that I was alone in thinking 'Prince
of Orange' was one of Andys best. After all , I don't believe its ever
been mentioned by anyone when talking about their fave demo tracks. Then
along comes 5-93 and it gets - count em - TWO mentions in one issue.
Thanks Jon S and Mike - I'm with you ! And if anyone out there knows
what 'side product' the song was used for , can you let me know ? (Mr.
Strijbos ?!!) What can I say ? The chorus is great , the
miles-out-of-time piano sublime......its a classic. Please let it be on
AV2.
Incidentally , IMHO , Apple Venus is a nothing title and the peacock
cover is pretty bland. After 7 years maybe the guys could've come up
with something a little more exciting. Still - as long as the music is
good who really cares about that stuff anyway ?

Your right , Rich , but I have to admit I love that song !!

See you , Pete.
