I am pleased to be able to recant my complaint in principle. I did
indeed fill out a card and send it to TVT back in December. I, of
course, promptly forgot about the card, and about the entry spot
for an email address, and my gripe with TVT at this point is reduced
to their lack of any acknowledgement of my card or explanation of
where they had gotten my email address. I assumed (as did others)
that they had culled me from the mailing list. Thankfully I can
report that this was not the case, and that they were merely remiss
in stating their sources. I apologize for my remarks and encourage
all citizens of the U.S. to run, wild-eyed and slavering, to the
nearest record store on February 23 clutching fistsful of cash, and
DEMAND the new album from XTC.

On another topic, someone wrote:

At some point when I was majoring in Classics, specifically Greek
tragedy and myth, it was pointed out to me that the standard
classical term for the feminine equivalent of "phallic" is -- hold
on to your hats, folks -- "phallic".

The term from which "phallic" is derived, "phallus", is *not* a
cross-gender term, but "phallic" is. Go figure. As for the terms
others have suggested, I would protest that any feminine equivalent
of "phallic" should be derived also from Greek, and I for the life
of me cannot remember what the Greek term for the female genitalia.
Note that terms such as "vaginal" and "vulval" are Latin in origin.

Well, Steve, you predicted it, so here goes--I'm not only have a BA in
English, but in Classics as well, and I taught those subjects and
etymology for a while....

Disqualifying "yonic" because it has a suffix from a different
language isn't valid; there are lots of words in English that combine
words from more than one language to create a new English word;
unfortunately, I can't think of one right now, which might seem to
invalidate my defense, but believe me, they do exist! (Actually, come to
think of it, "unfortunately" is such a word; _fortune_ is Latin, and the
-ly adverbial ending is native English.) Most of them are Greek-Latin
bastards, but there are plenty of English words from various Scandinavian
and Germanic languages that also get Latin or Greek bits slapped onto
them.

Too, -ic isn't an "English" suffix anyway (not like -wise, -ble, and -ment
are); it's Greek, where -ika is the suffix that indicates that something
is a conceptual noun (oikonomika=economics, mathematika=mathematics), and
-ic started to get used during the Renaissance to indicate "like"....
Therefore, "yonic" means "like a yoni".

Also, to nitpick with English is such a losing battle, because we're such
whores when it comes to creating and stealing words. English is pretty
cool, especially when one learns just how much of the syntax of our
language is a result of Britain's position as a highly-invadable
and invaded island.

But just to make me a true hypocrite, I really, really hate "impact" as a
verb. It's "affect", dammit!

Hail and well met Chalkers!

I am planning on removing myself from my work premises for the day of
Feb.25 to get to Borders to meet Andy. Any other Chicago area Chalkers
doing the same ? (like I really need to ask?).

If any of you who are would like to meet afterwards, maybe we can select a
bar or pub in the near area to rave about never washing our hand again
after shaking HIS and other nonsuch. Feel free to email me privately and
we can arrange something, especially if you live downtown and know of a
particularly good pub.

Folxtc,

Two names that my old band considered were "Sgt. Rock" & "Respectable St.".

The lead singer rejected "Sgt. Rock" because he feared that HE would become
"Sgt. Rock" in the same way that some people thought that Ian Anderson's
name was "Jethro Tull", and he didn't want to be known by that name.

He suggested "The Big Express" but that went over like a lead balloon.
(ahem)

"Respectable St." was vetoed because we did gigs with another band called
"Main St." and we didn't want to be another "Street" band.

We settled for "Mind Over Matter".

Obviously, 12 years after the break-up it hardly matters what the band's
name was, but the "Xtc names" in retrospect seem the coolest.

This has been discussed numerous times, so I guess these are for those who are
new to Chalkhills only:

H is not really a band, but a person. H is Steve Hogarth, the lead singer
for
Marillion. (He received the nickname after joining Marillion where there was
already another Steve, Steve Rothery.) Hogarth did a solo album in 97 called
"Ice Cream Genius" and Gregory both played on the album and did a mini-tour
with H as well, touring London, Paris, Cologne and Amsterdam.

H and Gregory are good mates, living close to each other. Gregory has hung
around Marillion's studio a bit the past year, even loaning Steve Rothery two
guitars that were used on their last album, "Radiation."

The H album is worth the listen, even for Marillion/general prog-rock haters.
For many years Marillion have been trying to eschew their prog-rock label, and
their last few albums have a very modern, more middle-of-the-road feel.

If you can't find the H album let me know and I can help you out.

Darn, I missed it. You can get WFNX on the internet. The URL is
http://www.wfnx.com. I love it because WFNX is a great station.
I was out of town, so I missed the whole thing. I hope they play
it again. I have to check the stations here to see if they're going to
play it. 101.1 The River might play it. They play a lot of XTC stuff.
Also I should see if Jim Santella from 97 Rock, a Classic Rock station
here in Buffalo, will play it. He hosts a progressive rock show on
Sundays and he plays a lot of XTC.

Chris, Phil only played on "The Intruder" and "No Self Control". Jerry
Marotta played on the rest of the tracks!!!
Needless to say, Phil like the droning style Peter had put forth to him,
and used it on his only "Good" solo piece- " In The Air Tonight".

On to XTC...Anybody have any news of an Austin visit for the duo? Maybe
Waterloo Records or KGSR (a live acoustic performance would be nice!).

XTC'S RARE NORTH AMERICAN PROMO TOUR

The cult band XTC doesn't tour- in fact, they don't play any shows, ever,
anywhere -- but the critically-acclaimed English group's Andy Partridge and
Colin Moulding will hit these shores next Thursday (February 18) to promote
their long-awaited new album, Apple Venus Volume 1.. On Friday, the
reclusive duo will film an episode of the cable TV show Space Ghost Coast
to Coast. The only truly public appearance set so far is an in-store
appearance at Tower Records in New York City on February 23, the day the
album is released, but they expect to add more during the course of their
visit, which is scheduled to bring them to New Orleans (Feb. 21),
Philadelphia (Feb. 22), Boston (Feb. 24), Chicago (Feb. 25), Toronto
(Feb. 26), Buffalo (Feb. 27), Denver (Feb. 28), San Francisco (March 2) and
Los Angeles (March 3-5). In other XTC news, Partridge has given permission
for rapper Willie D, formerly of the Geto Boys, to reinterpret the first
verse (the part the little girl sings) of XTC's 1987 hit "Dear God" for his
upcoming solo album.

>Can someone over t'other side of the pond tell me what on *earth* "Space

Space Ghost was (is) one of a wave of Hanna-Barbera cartoons that came
out in the 60's - he's a futuristic superhero that flies around the
Universe with his two pubescent sidekicks (and THEIR simian sidekick)
saving the Universe from the likes of Zorak and Brak, a couple of
megalomaniacal dictator-types bent on... well, you get the idea.
He derives his power from a set of wristbands that he can punch buttons
on to deliver different types of energy against his foes.

Hey, I didn't make it up.

But I did watch it when I was a kid.

Anyway, the story now is a washed-up Space Ghost who's basically
defeated his two major foes, and he's forced them to be Ed McMahons to
his Johnny Carson on a talk show, in order to make a buck. Total
schlock. I'm sure all this has already been explained here. They sing
silly songs, Brak makes hysterical commentary throughout the show (his
last encounter with Space Ghost left him - uh... brain-damaged), and he
has guests whom he interviews on a video monitor.

You have to be there.

And when XTC is on, I plan on being!

Hi All,

To the best of my recollection, Fuzzy Warbles will be something like four
cds and will contain not all but very many demos from the past, including
large parts of Jules Verne and The Bull but not all. It will also not
contain any demos XTC has released already because they are still in
Virgin's nasty grasp. It may or may not contain the demos for the Apple
Venus albums (because there is another possible project, though not likely,
in which each song on AV1 will be released along with it's demo counterpart
on an individual cd all boxed together as one package much like the never
finished "Somesuch" would have been.) Also, the reason why any second
generation tapes of Colin demos won't cut the mustard and be worked into
the box set is because Andy will be resequencing them (much like on
Transistor Blast) and he wants everything to be of the best sound quality
it can be. Keep in mind that the fact that it will be all demos will make
everything of lower quality right off the bat. There will be Dukes demos
included too.

He mentions "Your Dictionary" as the "ultimate kiss-off to an ex-spouse"

but if anybody is interested, the list can be found at:

On the subject of singles from AV1 - I've had my promo copy proudly blaring
forth for the past few weeks and although I LUV it to death, I find it hard
to believe that anything on it LOWERS itself enough to fit into today's
bland pop radio format. Jewel? Alanis? Matchbox 20? 50,000
alt-next-wave bands-that all-sound-exactly-alike? Thank God XTC is in a
whole other universe from that platinum selling crap. All that I know is
I'm going to buy my official copy of AV1 and my friends will buy their's
and hopefully it will be enough to keep our boys going. As I'm sure many
of you are as well, I'm a musician/songwriter/fanatic and I've got a couple
of CDs worth of fizzy-orange-pop under my belt, and I just keep making the
stuff because I have to, and I sell as much as I can, and then I go into
debt on the next one. It's art, baby, pop art. That's this world over.
And that's XTC. By the way, I think "Your Dictionary" would make the best
single. But can you spell obscenities on the radio? They are only
letters, after all.

You know your favorite band is hitting it big when they get a mention in the
McPaper, USA Today.
It's "quick news bites on the go" for those around the world who don't know,
and I must say I'm impressed!

Subject: XTC in Philly 2/22?

I heard a rumor that XTC will be stopping in Philadelphia on Monday, Feb
22, perhaps at a Tower Records therein. This would make some sense,
considering they are scheduled for NYC on Release Day, and Philly is about
2 hrs from NYC in good traffic.

I'm looking into it (my girlfriend heard this on the radio, but wasn't sure
she got all the facts correct). TVT's site only lists appearances starting
Feb 23.

To anyone in the Greater Boston area,

Just got word that Andy Partridge will be at Tower Records on Newbury
Street on Wednesday 2/24 at 6pm. I'm feeling flustered, tongue tied
and star struck just thinking about it.

Down loaded 'I'd Like That'. Made me want to dance around my living
room in wild abandon. It's all so exciting.

Hope to see some of you there!

Dear happy mostly anticipatory people,

A question to all you who can't bear to listen to demos till the
album proper comes out: When you were little and you knew Santa
had visited even though it was still 11.30pm Christmas Eve, did
you wait till 12.00 till the presents were opened? Do you wait
till your birthday to open the cards you received a day earlier
in the mail? Do you pay taxes on time? (Not sure of that last
one.)

What would Kramer have done if Seinfeld had got a carpet?

OK, I'm warmed up - here's my dream. See if you can guess it
before the end of the para. On UK Arena two days ago, which is a
UK cable channel here in - yeah - I watched a brilliant show
where Graham Gouldman of 10cc, Neil Finn of New Zealand - and
Roddy Frame just sat next to each other on a stage with a guitar
each and sang their songs, taking turns and then joining in with
each other's stuff. It was simple, it was uncomplicated, it was
sheer brilliance. One man and his guitar. That's all that was
needed. Well, three of them. OK you guessed my dream.

Talent is an aphrodisiac indeed. I've seen some of the most dog
ugly people you could ever wish to meet on a stage and wanted to
bed them right then and there on the strength of their talent as
performers, musicians, actors. WAW!

Look, I've had a hard day - allow me my little rambles.

Looking forward to next Monday 22nd February - the first time
I've said I'm looking forward to a Monday in a very very long
time! BELINDA

Who do you think would win in a fight: Soundgarden's "Spoonman" or XTC's
"Greenman"?

Subject: Why Apple Venus of course!

Just thought I'd let you folks know that I'm pulling my weight around
here.....and with some success!

I sent the following email to the music director of our local FM rock
station.

    Dave.

I've been listening to your station faithfully waiting to see if
you will pick up the first single, "I'd Like That" from the new
XTC album entitled Apple Venus due in stores Feb. 23rd.

I am wondering if you are planning on adding it to your play list?

Below you'll find a review of the CD found in the Province.

I have no connection to the band. Just a big fan in Victoria
looking forward to the bands first record in seven years, and
would love to hear it on the radio.

Thanks a bunch and keep up the good work.

    Rob

And his reply:

I'm a huge XTC fan and we hope to begin playing it soon.

    And, thanks for listening!

So yes this kind of email can help the band. Do it today!

And now for my first listen to "I'd Like That"

I had been madly switching around the preset stations (driving my wife nuts)
on our car stereo hoping that at least one of the stations we listen to
would play it. Finally I was rewarded by my constant switching to Seattles
103.7 The Mountain. It was around 3:45....I'd happened to leave work a
little early and was on the way to pick up my wife. The female dj announced
that in the next set she would be playing new XTC!! I had goosebumps....I
said to myself surely you are loosing it. But the next thing I did was pull
the car off the road and into a parking lot....stopped the car and waited.
After a Rolling Stones song I was rewarded with my first listen to Apple
Venus. Heaven!

I can hardly wait to hear the whole thing next week!

Cheers

Rob (who is listening to Cornelius - Fantasma which was recommended by
several people on this list and is definitely my cup of tea. Thanks.)
