Sisters and brothers of the 'Hill,

I am overwhelmingly pleased to announce that "I'd Like That" has received
what I believe to be it's first airing in Maine. The song was played on
WBOR 91.1 FM (Brunswick) on Saturday the 13th, at about 2:45 PM.

What, you might ask, did Brunswick do to be so blessed? Nothing, actually
-- it's just that I know the DJs, and they agreed to play it for me.
However, they didn't just play it...they gave a history of XTC's recent
recording woes, the address of the TVT Records website and the release date
of the album, and the ultimatum: "Give us a call if you want to hear it
again, because we'll be glad to play it again!" They would've said more,
but that was as much as I would scribble on the back of the "CMJ New Music"
sampler. (Now we get to see what happens when the WBOR big-wigs review the
playlist!)

Will this make Southern Maine pick up the album? We certainly hope so.

Doing my part,
-Ben (with thanks to "Katie and Laurie's Rummage Sale")

P.S. After "I'd Like That" -- and with no prodding from me whatsoever --
they played "Sandra's Having Her Brain Out," by the Soft Boys. What a
great show!

Knights (of all gender) of Karmic Shine-age,

Agree with the stud-boy who recently posted, asking for TVT/Cooking
Vinyl/Idea/whoever to please give us a schedule of XTC personal
appearances! What, are they afraid too many people will show up if you
let us know beforehand (saying this knowing full well that reps of TVT,
Cooking Vinyl, and Idea are on this list, so call me buckethead)?

I am enjoying the slams against ELO...did you all know that Parthenon
Huxley (P. Hux), purveyor of fine pop, has joined ELO Part II? And does
anyone care? I can't get it out of my head...

Regarding the new XTC album songs, I am thinking that the only overtly
Beatlesqe arrangement is on "I Can't Own Her" in the chorus.

Does anyone have any educated guesses as to which demos might appear on
this -- for instance, is it possible that the long-unavailable "Jules
Verne" and "Golden Guts" tapes will be included on it? (If that were the
case, I might finally be able to forgive myself one of my longstanding,
gnawing-at-my-stomach, what-an-idiot-I-was life incidents -- the day I saw
"Jules Verne's Sketchbook" in a record store on my way to the airport and
didn't pick it up, thinking I'd pick it up when I got back to town, not
knowing that it wasn't a regular release).

I recently received two tapes (Nos 5&6) from Ian Stewart.

The quality of the material on the tapes varies, but for those of us who
haven't seen the stuff before, it was a treasure trove. His prices are a bit
high, but he delivers what he promises.

I'm not a schill for him, just a satisfied customer. I'll certainly buy

As a matter of fact, the drummer on the entire album was none other than
the dreaded Phil Collins. PUHAHAHAHAHA! Speaking of the Finn Bros. album, I
remember someone a few digests back saying how much he hated the album.
Well, he's certainly entitled, and I can understand it, it certainly sounds
disjointed, but I'd say it's an example of weird production ideas taken to
the extreme. It's one of the few albums I've heard that sounded completely
"fucked"(I'm sorry, but I can't think of a better worked to use; where I
grew up(Quebec)"fucked" or "fucke" en francais means broken)where everybody
knew exactly what they were doing and nobody was under the influence of any
controlled substances. For that alone it's quite an achievement. I wouldn't
say it's a masterpiece, but I'm glad it exists. I'd put XTC's Mummer in the
same category, for example, though I'm not sure Steve Nye completely
understood what Andy and co. had in mind. Otherwise for crazed genius
without chemicals, there's David Thomas/Pere Ubu, Captain Beefheart(though
I hear he was quite the drinker, I don't think his music was in any way
influenced by alcohol), Frank Zappa, Brian Eno, James Kolchalka, maybe a
few others if I thought hard. Todd Rundgren doesn't count; I consider him a
genius as a songwriter of gorgeous three minute pop songs; as an electronic
musician he was unlistenable IMO. His experiments have marred otherwise
brilliant albums(A Wizard/A True Star)and ruined entire albums(Healing).

you'd think...but nowadays nearly all commercial music stations, regardless
of format, have that same mentality.

First off, I believe Greenman is over six minutes. And though a six minute
Smashing Pumpkins song might gain consideration six minutes is considered a
long time to be playing "unfamiliar" music when your livelihood depends on
holding listeners...especially by a relatively "unfamiliar" band these days,
and especially when that band that has more years behind them than they do
in front of them. It's the unfortunate truth.

As good as this album is I really hear very little that is going to impress
anyone other than core XTC fans. But "I'd Like That" is quick enough and
catchy enough to maybe hook a few programmers. If that were to do as well
as, say "Peter Pumpkinhead" did, well then I'd say you've got a very good
chance of Greenman as a second track. But I wouldn't count on it without a
video.

On a nearly unrelated note, I was rummaging through some stuff this morning
and I found my long lost Andy Demos cassette! Now, finally, I can
compare...and get an idea of what AV2 will offer.

Mike Myers said, "John, I don't get your drift. Danny Gatton was one of my
favorite guitarists; he became despondent over his inability to support his

suicide a few years ago. ... He clearly was an artist whose talent was
many times bigger than his financial success. So I guess I can't connect
your statement to my memories of Danny......."

The Mommyheads too, after many brilliant recordss on independent labels,
were signed to a label, made one CD which watered down their talent, was not
promoted, and dropped without a trace. I can imagine the frustration of
being a critic's and fan's darling and making not a penny from a "Big
Contract". I hope that Adam can soldier on with his art, a-la XTC, or Robyn
Hitchcock who survived A&M, rather than give up. I am also a huge Danny
Gatton fan and was shattered by his suicide. Let's hope this new
MP3-internet-direct-access-to-the-artist's-work thing will somehow loosen
the majors' grip on the industry, and allow artists to connect more directly
and perhaps more profitably with their fans.

be aware that I told Andy that our esteemed ringleader John Relph should be
thanked prominently for all he's done and continues to do for the band and
for it's fans. I guess he forgot. Oh well, I thank him!

About XTC making plans for videos . . . the reasons why they are not going
to make one are 1) they don't like making videos and 2) a video costs about
$75,000 to do. Wouldn't you rather the band spend the money on the next
album? I kinda wished they had made a video because I'm an AVID editor
(nonlinear video and audio editing system) for my profession and Andy
said that I could edit the next one they did (record company willing). I guess
I'll have to wait a bit longer or a lot longer.

And another plug while I'm on this topic:
Los Lobos are arguably the best American band currently working. Most
of the band play multiple instruments, they can shift effortlessly
between rock, country, blues, Cuban, Tex-Mex and various other musics,
and blend them together well, too, andthey are AWESOME live. Their
album KIKO is easily one of the best rock albums of the decade, and
earned a place on over 100 critic's best of lists in 1992. They are
consistantly acclaimed critically, yet seem to have only a cult
following. Any fan of intelligent, well-written and played rock music
needs to hear this band. Try KIKO or COLOSSAL HEAD. If you like Latino
music, try the beautiful LOS SUPER SEVEN album. I just love that one.

ELO is to XTC as :

1. Kenny G is to John Coltrane

Hi all,

AV1 is fantastic! This has got to be one of the top 10 albums
by anyone, ever. It's not "Pet Sounds" but it is currently enjoying
much more air time in my environs than the latter, which says
something. Have I got a great girl, or what? :-)

True. But I wonder if they are properly applied in this case.
Did you order "Transistor Blast" directly from TVT, as I did?

I can't swear to it, but I seem to remember filling out a form
which included an email address and a check box such as "Do you
want to receive emails on upcoming XTC news?" If there were
such as box, I'm sure to have checked it; and sure enough I
also received the TVT announcement.

So; it was commercial, but was it unsolicited? Only if there
wasn't such a box, or you didn't order direct from TVT, or if
you did but unselected the box. I hope that what is afoot here
is a misunderstanding, rather than TVT being evil spammers.

And if you did unselect the box... I do remember there were
problems with the submission (secure vs. unsecure) and maybe
your choice made it into their database incorrectly. Perhaps
you're the victim of a simple error rather than unscrupulousness.

I hope your characterization of TVT has a benign explanation.
Perhaps you could shed some light? Or perhaps TVT will comment.

And John Voorhees noted:

Looks like amazon.com was also being, erm, cautious. They've
chosen to rotate the design 90 degrees. Harumph indeed.

"Say a sunflower I became, I'd be growing in your brain"... does
this remind anyone else who used to play AD&D of Yellow Musk Zombies?
I'm having trouble deciding whether it's "brain" or "rain" anyway;
sounds like "brain" the first time and "rain" thereafter. Opinions?

Looking forward to the NYC appearance details,

Sounds like a bit of reach to me. I suspect that much of the irony of the
song would get lost in the translation

> think green day, the exploited or [insert seminal 1976 punk band name
here] <

Never have understood why Green Day are bracketed as a 'punk' band, and IMO
they certainly bear little comparison with the best that 1976/77 had to
offer. I can't claim to have heard all their stuff, but what I have heard
sounds like fairly average 'heavy metal' to my uneducated ears (even if
this is all pop <G>)

Duncan Kimball ranted:

> Any other decision would have been moronic <

How so?? I have no intention of flagellating myself with the lack, but I
decided that three quid for a single track that I could wait two weeks and
obtain at a much better price per track just didn't make sense (in relation
to my mortgage, need to feed my wife and children, etc. - before I get
'Mollyfied' <g>). A strange choice, perhaps in your eyes, but moronic??

John Hammond at TVT confirmed:

> APPLE VENUS Vol. 1 will be in stores in the US and Canada on 2/23/99 <

Do we have any confirmation that this is also the UK release date?? Cooking
Vinyl care to comment??

Katy asked:

> What's the usual age for an XCT fan then? <

(Who they?? <G>) One would have to guess that the 'usual age' would be
those that were in their late teens/early twenties back in the late
70s/early 80s, so say mid thirties. However, I am sure that there are
plenty of fans who are much younger, others who are older, and I can't
imagine that it matters much. The closest I know to your age is my eight
year old son, who is already very keen on numerous XTC tracks, with a
special fondness for 'Peter Pumpkinhead' and 'Smartest Monkeys'

Michael Harvey wrote:

Definitely not. How about vulval, vulviform or even vulvar (which is close
enough to vulgar to cause some consternation)?? (I see later suggestions
for 'yonic', but I think that that is a stretch, because only the noun form
- yoni - of a Hindu word is really 'valid' English, and the -ic ending is
applying English forms to a non-English word (not that that doesn't happen,
obviously). No doubt I'll get clobbered by any English majors out there,
but what da heck)

Hmmm, well that depends on how you look at it. I'm sure that 'Washaway' was
on my original cassette version of 'The Big Express', which I bought at the
time the album came out (I had no record deck at the time, so resorted to
buying cassette instead of vinyl versions). So the concept of 'bonus
tracks' is a fairly loose one

also, someone stated:

> A lot of people don't realize that there are NO symbols at all on Peter
Gabriel's third solo album <

That's funny 'cos my copy has a dozen letters on the front cover, and
dozens more on the back, let alone those on the record itself, not to
mention 'sound clinic' etched in the runout grooves <gd&r>

Cheers, Steve

Raise your hands if you thought 15 years ago that there would be
remembered enough that a 15 year old in 1999 that had a DuranDuran
fixation. I still listen to mine old tapes, but to see someone come
along in the years since "Rio" and "View to a Kill" to pick them up
as a favorite band causes a slight chuckle.

I'm back! (well...la-de-freakin' da! :-)) If anyone wants to send me e-mail,
I'm at

WWi8064839@aol.com

Not sure what I missed, but I'd only been back to this list for a day and
already it's benefitted me: I picked up the CMJ New Music magazine with
"I'd Like That." THANKS to the person who posted the info about that
magazine/disc combo. There actually are a few other tunes on that CD that I
really like. But, I'm saving my immediate $ for several items:

- Apple Venus, Vol. 1 - I'm getting my copy via www.sirencd.com; I put in
an advance order seveal weeks ago. For those who want the VINYL, they list
it as being available. I've order from them in the past and have always
been satisfied with promptness and delivery.

Gee, Mark Strijbos, well done! You got your copy - congratulations. Siren
sez it's due for release 2/23/99, but oddly enough they called me last week
(I wasn't home to take the message), to confirm my cust. no. and other
info. All of which led me to think they'd have copies in, perhaps, BEFORE
the 23rd. I hope!

RE: "I Like That" - I like it...it could be a B-side to "The Meeting
Place." Andy's "pastoral" phase.

I'm also saving money for the new Jason Falkner CD, also due out the
23rd. A few weeks ago I got the "Holiday/"Down at the Lake" 7-inch; sounds
pretty good.

Back to XTC: The first time I heard the studio "I'd Like That" was on 92.5,
The River, in Boston, MA, about two weeks ago. I knew immediately what it
was. When it finished, the DJ said "New music from XTC...finally, hearing
some new music from these guys, they have an album coming out on the 23rd
of February, and I'm sure a lot of folks will be looking forward to that."

Later!

Wes

I was killing some time and thought I'd finally visit the VH1 site.
A little giggle slipped out when I saw this:

***************

New XTC Track Exclusive on the Web

APPLE VENUS, Volume 1, the first new album from legendary British
band XTC in over 7 years, will be available in stores everywhere on
Feb. 23rd. But fans of the band won't have to wait that long to hear
it. The band has released their first single, "I'd Like That," on
Liquid Audio at their website, http://www.tvtrecords.com/xtc.

AOL members can also get an exclusive page featuring XTC at Keyword: VH1.

Ahh. It feels weird to see as many XTC mentions all over the place.
I think I can get used to it.

Whoa, isn't that the definition of redundant right there? <<

The succinct way of putting it is to say, "Whoa, isn't that a tautology?"

But anyone who comes up with Scooby Doo; you gotta tip your hat to them!

Can someone over t'other side of the pond tell me what on *earth* "Space
Ghost" is please?
