Sisters and brothers of the 'Hill,
I am overwhelmingly pleased to announce that "I'd Like That" has received
what I believe to be it's first airing in Maine. The song was played on
WBOR 91.1 FM (Brunswick) on Saturday the 13th, at about 2:45 PM.
What, you might ask, did Brunswick do to be so blessed? Nothing, actually
-- it's just that I know the DJs, and they agreed to play it for me.
However, they didn't just play it...they gave a history of XTC's recent
recording woes, the address of the TVT Records website and the release date
of the album, and the ultimatum: "Give us a call if you want to hear it
again, because we'll be glad to play it again!" They would've said more,
but that was as much as I would scribble on the back of the "CMJ New Music"
sampler. (Now we get to see what happens when the WBOR big-wigs review the
playlist!)
Will this make Southern Maine pick up the album? We certainly hope so.

Speaking of the Finn Bros. album, I remember someone a few digests back saying how much he hated the album. Well, he's certainly entitled, and I can understand it, it certainly sounds disjointed, but I'd say it's an example of weird production ideas taken to the extreme. It's one of the few albums I've heard that sounded completely "fucked"(I'm sorry, but I can't think of a better worked to use; where I grew up(Quebec)"fucked" or "fucke" en francais means broken)where everybody knew exactly what they were doing and nobody was under the influence of any controlled substances. For that alone it's quite an achievement. I wouldn't say it's a masterpiece, but I'm glad it exists. I'd put XTC's Mummer in the same category, for example, though I'm not sure Steve Nye completely understood what Andy and co. had in mind. Otherwise for crazed genius without chemicals, there's David Thomas/Pere Ubu, Captain Beefheart(though I hear he was quite the drinker, I don't think his music was in any way influenced by alcohol), Frank Zappa, Brian Eno, James Kolchalka, maybe a few others if I thought hard. Todd Rundgren doesn't count; I consider him a genius as a songwriter of gorgeous three minute pop songs; as an electronic musician he was unlistenable IMO. His experiments have marred otherwise brilliant albums(A Wizard/A True Star)and ruined entire albums(Healing). Chris

First off, I believe Greenman is over six minutes. And though a six minute Smashing Pumpkins song might gain consideration six minutes is considered a long time to be playing "unfamiliar" music when your livelihood depends on holding listeners...especially by a relatively "unfamiliar" band these days, and especially when that band that has more years behind them than they do in front of them. It's the unfortunate truth. As good as this album is I really hear very little that is going to impress anyone other than core XTC fans. But "I'd Like That" is quick enough and catchy enough to maybe hook a few programmers. If that were to do as well as, say "Peter Pumpkinhead" did, well then I'd say you've got a very good chance of Greenman as a second track. But I wouldn't count on it without a video. On a nearly unrelated note, I was rummaging through some stuff this morning and I found my long lost Andy Demos cassette! Now, finally, I can compare...and get an idea of what AV2 will offer. -russ

Let's hope this new MP3-internet-direct-access-to-the-artist's-work thing will somehow loosen the majors' grip on the industry, and allow artists to connect more directly and perhaps more profitably with their fans. Most of the band play multiple instruments, they can shift effortlessly between rock, country, blues, Cuban, Tex-Mex and various other musics, and blend them together well, too, andthey are AWESOME live. Their album KIKO is easily one of the best rock albums of the decade, and earned a place on over 100 critic's best of lists in 1992. They are consistantly acclaimed critically, yet seem to have only a cult following. Any fan of intelligent, well-written and played rock music needs to hear this band. Try KIKO or COLOSSAL HEAD. If you like Latino music, try the beautiful LOS SUPER SEVEN album. I just love that one.

I can't swear to it, but I seem to remember filling out a form which included an email address and a check box such as "Do you want to receive emails on upcoming XTC news?" If there were such as box, I'm sure to have checked it; and sure enough I also received the TVT announcement. So; it was commercial, but was it unsolicited? Only if there wasn't such a box, or you didn't order direct from TVT, or if you did but unselected the box. I hope that what is afoot here is a misunderstanding, rather than TVT being evil spammers. And if you did unselect the box... I do remember there were problems with the submission (secure vs. unsecure) and maybe your choice made it into their database incorrectly. Perhaps you're the victim of a simple error rather than unscrupulousness. I hope your characterization of TVT has a benign explanation. Perhaps you could shed some light? Or perhaps TVT will comment. THANKS to the person who posted the info about that magazine/disc combo. There actually are a few other tunes on that CD that I really like. But, I'm saving my immediate $ for several items: - Apple Venus, Vol. 1 - I'm getting my copy via www.sirencd.com; I put in an advance order seveal weeks ago. For those who want the VINYL, they list it as being available. I've order from them in the past and have always been satisfied with promptness and delivery. Gee, Mark Strijbos, well done! You got your copy - congratulations. Siren sez it's due for release 2/23/99, but oddly enough they called me last week (I wasn't home to take the message), to confirm my cust. no. and other info. All of which led me to think they'd have copies in, perhaps, BEFORE the 23rd. I hope! RE: "I Like That" - I like it...it could be a B-side to "The Meeting Place." Andy's "pastoral" phase. I'm also saving money for the new Jason Falkner CD, also due out the 23rd. A few weeks ago I got the "Holiday/"Down at the Lake" 7-inch; sounds pretty good. Back to XTC: The first time I heard the studio "I'd Like That" was on 92.5, The River, in Boston, MA, about two weeks ago. I knew immediately what it was. When it finished, the DJ said "New music from XTC...finally, hearing some new music from these guys, they have an album coming out on the 23rd of February, and I'm sure a lot of folks will be looking forward to that."
