Sounds like crotchless panties and cheap bondage gear, I know, but it was the nimblest, most elegant little string band there ever was. The Classics (Qualiton) label put out a year-by-year anthology of Django's career from 1934 to 1947. My particular fave-rave year is 1935-36, which features the SINGLE MOST EYE-POPPING GUITAR LICK EVER PLAYED, on "After You're Gone," during which Old Two-Fingers does the guitaristic equivalent of a quadruple Lutz while leaping 57 buses and brokering a Middle East peace agreement. Wow, is another word for it. There's a shorter compilation, called "Djangologie, Vols. 1 & 2" on the Drg label (Catalog Number: 8424) that contains most of the indispensible stuff. Off you go. The pic at http://www.jazzphotos.com/bwphotos.htm gives a hint about Django's two-fingered style: He didn't completely lose the use of the ring and pinky fingers in that fire--although they do look pretty twisted in the photo--but he had to sort of lug them onto the fretboard when he wanted to form a ninth chord. Why don't we wear moustaches like that anymore? -------- Watt: Relax. It was a culmination of a long line of events that convinced the fifteen-year-old whose zits I used to squeeze that mainstream rock music was finally indistinguishable from professional sports, and that it might be time to start casting about for something new. What a great country we live in!! And thanks to Richard Pedretti-Allen for setting up the XTC Gathering at Scotties in Sunnyvale. It was worth the drive from S.F. to hear other fan's XTC stories, and the Andy & Colin demos and Remoulds cuts. And thanks especially for the amusing "Andy Rantings" tape. The people I got my courage up to start a conversation with (I'm usually shy) all seemed to be down-to-earth, nice people -- John R., Randy, Olof, Chris D, and other names I can't quite recall. Next time, let's do it in a place that we can set up some instruments -- I'll promise to bring my drum set! Anyway, I've never talked to Stipe personally, but many people I know say that he's a bit pretentious and can even be an asshole, i.e. he's a "sensitive artist." I was at a Beck show about 2 years ago here in Athens, and Stipe was at the show. He was standing about 10 feet or so behind me and some friends. He was surrounded by a small entourage and had this really pretentious look on his face. One sorority-looking girl went up to him asking for his autograph and she walked away crying. Tears of joy for meeting her hero, or did he really insult her that bad? I don't know, but he just had the aura of "asshole." BTW, I don't think he was signing any autographs, and what DID he say about the Beatles anyway? I'm assuming it wasn't very good. I have every comedy CD he has ever released (there are 4 available from Rykodisc), and you may be very interested to know this, Chris--I have three whole videotapes full of Hicks material (including "Relentless," "Live in London," "Bill vs. the Audience" [EXTREMELY funny, altho I feel sorry for young Bill], and "Ninja Bachelor Party."). We could possibly work out a trade, cos I love spreading the good news of Bill. I hear there's more stuff available, but this is all I've managed to get my hands on for now. XTC CONTENT: I'm so glad to hear that the boys are actually going to release a box set of demos. FINALLY! I may stand very alone in this opinion, but I think they should have released a box set of demos in the first place instead of "Transistor Blast"--I mean, I bought TB and like it (already had the BBC 1 disc tho, which I shelled out more than I should've for while in London about a year ago), but some of the studio takes just sound so similar to the originals that I can barely even tell them apart at times. Tower orders direct from the labels. Because of their size, of course. Your store probably doesn't do the volume to justify ordering direct from the labels. Therefore, big chains like Tower and Best Buy can escape the middle-man and lower prices. I used to work for TVT and sold to Tower. They're paying $9-10 at the most. Not .20, I agree (that I think was just an exaggerated lashing-out from someone who was complaining about CD prices overall). BTW, you can order directly from TVT. The only two things I had a problem with was they didn't mention anything about Dave Gregory's departure or AV. That really mad me upset. I wonder why they didn't mention the release of AV Vol. 1? Also, I sent in my check to Music Boulevard, and now I can't wait until AV Vol. 1 comes out. I'm confused though, I remember reading someone saying they talked to one of their local record stores and the guy said that AV Vol. 1 is coming out on Feb. 12. Then I hear that it's not coming out until March 2? What the heck is going on. Also, when you pre-order an album off of a online record store, does it go out to consumers the day of the albums release or before? I just want to know, so I can prepare myself to get it. Molly

While it was enjoyable (and a little excruciating) seeing so many 80's English bands, I also felt the coverage on XTC could have been a little better. They didn't even mention AV1, although they briefly showed the cover of TB. I have mixed feelings about XTC appearing on a program called Where are They Now. One one hand, I suppose it's good publicity, and the producers of that show seem to fairly often find artists who are mking a comeback in one form or another. On the other hand, it lumps them in with a lot of lessers (Wang Chung, Bow Wow Wow, etc) who either aren't performing together anymore or are doing the oldies reunion tour thing (which has always struck me as a little pathetic, both for the band and the audience). I would prefer XTC to get exposure for their current projects, not for being a decade old blip on the music scene.

The Oingo Boingo segment was filmed at a concert in California with the Go Gos and the Alley Cats. But I stayed up and watched it, by God, so I'm going to comment. Well. Besides sticking XTC at the very end, VH1 never even mentioned the coming of Apple Venus (which makes me wonder when the segment was actually shot--does anyone know?). though they did mention Transistor Blast. And while they showed the covers of Black Sea and White Music, they didn't identify them, and they said that "they made it big with the singles Dear God and The Mayor of Simpleton." Agh! What about the ten years _before_ Skylarking? Grump grump grump. They were much bigger with their early stuff than they ever were later. -Andrea
