It's by the late, greats Steve Marriott and Ronnie Lane, ex Small

I've listened to Greenman on the Q CD and if the rest of the album is

The reason for the following will become clearer after a small amount of
time has passed. I just wanted to get it on the record early. This passage
leaped out at me from the pages of the Sunday (1/31) Washington Post Style
Invitational, a weekly contest that encourages readers to be extremely
silly in print
(http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/style/invitational/front.htm).

Unbeknownst to many, there's a variant called Dulles Corridor Rhyming
Slang. (You have to be born within the sound of the backup on the Toll
Road at Hunter Mill.) But then I don't suppose many of you give a lying
duck.

Just go tend your fruit.

The Kimball Person observes:

> Surely you scribble for a living? If not - why not?

Alas, Duncan, there has lately been a shameful lack of editors kicking in
the door and waving fistfuls of money at me in exchange for convoluted,
self-referential S. J. Perelman knockoffs on whatever topic happens to
spring to mind on a given day. But if you see any green-eyeshade types
whose expense accounts look in need of a trim, send 'em my way. I'm willing
to talk. Meanwhile I'll just keep on at the Olive Garden, schlepping Zuppa
Toscana to blue-haired matrons who wouldn't know a 15% tip if it bit them
on the steatopygia. It's a pig's life, I tell you.

We note with anticipatory pleasure that the Austin Powers sequel, due out
later this year, is to be named "The Spy Who Shagged Me." Could someone
please explain to me--what does that mean?

--------

Django: Anything with Stephane Grappelli and the Quintet du Hot Club de
France. Sounds like crotchless panties and cheap bondage gear, I know, but
it was the nimblest, most elegant little string band there ever was. The
Classics (Qualiton) label put out a year-by-year anthology of Django's
career from 1934 to 1947. My particular fave-rave year is 1935-36, which
features the SINGLE MOST EYE-POPPING GUITAR LICK EVER PLAYED, on "After
You're Gone," during which Old Two-Fingers does the guitaristic equivalent
of a quadruple Lutz while leaping 57 buses and brokering a Middle East
peace agreement. Wow, is another word for it. There's a shorter
compilation, called "Djangologie, Vols. 1 & 2" on the Drg label (Catalog
Number: 8424) that contains most of the indispensible stuff. Off you go.

The pic at http://www.jazzphotos.com/bwphotos.htm gives a hint about
Django's two-fingered style: He didn't completely lose the use of the ring
and pinky fingers in that fire--although they do look pretty twisted in the
photo--but he had to sort of lug them onto the fretboard when he wanted to
form a ninth chord.

Why don't we wear moustaches like that anymore?

--------

Watt: Relax. Enlightenment might be closer than you think.

--------

Mike V.: The mid-Seventies departure of Jeff "Skunk" Baxter from Steely Dan
to the Doobie Brothers, attended as it was with public contract disputes,
desolated fans, and "Will-he-turn-them-around?" editorials, resembled
nothing other than the trading of a star reliever for a shortstop to be
named later. It was a culmination of a long line of events that convinced
the fifteen-year-old whose zits I used to squeeze that mainstream rock
music was finally indistinguishable from professional sports, and that it
might be time to start casting about for something new. That something came
in the form of Patti Smith's "Horses," and I for one have never regretted
it.

Thanks for the info. Can't get on, thanks to our accursed corporate
firewall, but going on Dave's known love for oldies, I'd hazard a guess
that it's a cover of the famous 1968 single by the Small Faces? It was
written by Steve Marriott for his then-wife, and features the incendiary
P.P. Arnold on backing vocals. Todd Rundgren did a cover of it on his
"Ever-Popular Tortured Artist Effect" album, too.

I just placed my on-line order for Apple Venus from Music Blvd
(http://www.musicblvd.com/), and with the $10 first time users coupon, my
bill totaled $5.88 -- wow; the new XTC CD, delivered to my home, for under
six bucks. What a great country we live in!!

And thanks to Richard Pedretti-Allen for setting up the XTC Gathering at
Scotties in Sunnyvale. It was worth the drive from S.F. to hear other fan's
XTC stories, and the Andy & Colin demos and Remoulds cuts. And thanks
especially for the amusing "Andy Rantings" tape. The people I got my
courage up to start a conversation with (I'm usually shy) all seemed to be
down-to-earth, nice people -- John R., Randy, Olof, Chris D, and other
names I can't quite recall. Next time, let's do it in a place that we can
set up some instruments -- I'll promise to bring my drum set!

Trivia: the "Tin Soldier" cover on Remoulds was a Small Faces song (also
covered by Todd Rundgren on The Ever Popular Tortured Artist Effect),
written by Ronnie Lane.

Hey--
I noticed some Stipe-slagging on the most recent 'hills and
just thought I'd put my own two cents worth in. I attend the
University of Georgia, which is in Athens, GA, the town where Michael
Stipe lives (but I'm sure you all knew that already). Anyway, I've
never talked to Stipe personally, but many people I know say that he's
a bit pretentious and can even be an asshole, i.e. he's a "sensitive
artist." I was at a Beck show about 2 years ago here in Athens, and
Stipe was at the show. He was standing about 10 feet or so behind me
and some friends. He was surrounded by a small entourage and had this
really pretentious look on his face. One sorority-looking girl went up
to him asking for his autograph and she walked away crying. Tears of
joy for meeting her hero, or did he really insult her that bad? I
don't know, but he just had the aura of "asshole." BTW, I don't think
he was signing any autographs, and what DID he say about the Beatles
anyway? I'm assuming it wasn't very good.

Oh man oh man, I LOVE Bill Hicks!!! He is one of my idols. I have
every comedy CD he has ever released (there are 4 available from
Rykodisc), and you may be very interested to know this, Chris--I have
three whole videotapes full of Hicks material (including "Relentless,"
"Live in London," "Bill vs. the Audience" [EXTREMELY funny, altho I
feel sorry for young Bill], and "Ninja Bachelor Party."). We could
possibly work out a trade, cos I love spreading the good news of Bill.
I hear there's more stuff available, but this is all I've managed to
get my hands on for now.

XTC CONTENT:
I'm so glad to hear that the boys are actually going to release a box
set of demos. FINALLY! I may stand very alone in this opinion, but I
think they should have released a box set of demos in the first place
instead of "Transistor Blast"--I mean, I bought TB and like it (already
had the BBC 1 disc tho, which I shelled out more than I should've for
while in London about a year ago), but some of the studio takes just
sound so similar to the originals that I can barely even tell them
apart at times. But, maybe releasing this set was just a good business
move, cos even tho fossil fuel and upsy daisy were released not long
ago, I didn't buy those cos I already have all the albums.

anyway, I'm droning on too long.
au revoir!

There are no "next link" distributors (for the most part) for Tower
Records. Tower orders direct from the labels. Because of their size, of
course. Your store probably doesn't do the volume to justify ordering
direct from the labels. Therefore, big chains like Tower and Best Buy can
escape the middle-man and lower prices.

I used to work for TVT and sold to Tower. They're paying $9-10 at the
most. Not .20, I agree (that I think was just an exaggerated lashing-out
from someone who was complaining about CD prices overall).

BTW, you can order directly from TVT. They don't impose outlandish
"ordering quotas" like the major labels do. $200 and you're set to go.

In responding to someone named "Jason Garcia", who's not going to pay $17
for a CD, someone using the e-handle "d-erelict" (aka "d-erek") said, among
other things, the following:

> The only reason new cd's are $17 at Tower is because the Distributor

GIVE ME A BREAK! What about Tower's (or any chain's) ability to order in
bulk, at discounted rates? Also, it's not like the distributors buy the
CDs at cost - or $2 - and then mark them up to $12 for stores!!! How about
the money that they make by selling 8 billion copies of every new Boyz 2
Thugz release? It seems to me like all those "lucky," low-overhead
independent stores are folding while the corporate giants spring up every
few blocks. God bless those chain stores!

Oh, XTC content? I heard an Apple Venus 1 (man, what a terrible title - no
wonder everyone abbreviates it!) track over the web, on WFMU, the other
day, and it sounded real good - a little like The Kinks' "Autumn Almanac".
For the first time this very skeptical (but still hoping), angry old XTC
fan was excited for the new album.

Chalkers,
That was a good but short segment on VH1's Where Are They Now?. I
thought Andy was his usual witty self. The only two things I had a
problem with was they didn't mention anything about Dave Gregory's
departure or AV. That really mad me upset. I wonder why they didn't
mention the release of AV Vol. 1?
Also, I sent in my check to Music Boulevard, and now I can't wait
until AV Vol. 1 comes out. I'm confused though, I remember reading
someone saying they talked to one of their local record stores and the
guy said that AV Vol. 1 is coming out on Feb. 12. Then I hear that it's
not coming out until March 2? What the heck is going on. Also, when
you pre-order an album off of a online record store, does it go out to
consumers the day of the albums release or before? I just want to know,
so I can prepare myself to get it.

If not already done by someone else I am proposing a AVI get together in
London in late Feb/early March, weekday or weekend, probably in Central
London,ie at a time when we will have all had time to digest said
offering so if any interested please get in touch, even those from last
year's.

The Guardian published its list of the alternative top 100 albums, a
list topped by Nick Drake, and there was no XTC to be seen. The Lilac
Time's Paradise Circus got to 90th and PereUbu's stupendous Modern Dance
made it to 67. PIL's metal box was in there somewhere.

A quick one, not quite as manic as last time...

Janis VanCourt asked:

Well, according to the advance CD, it's "Greenman" - your greatest
fear...but no ominous 'Firm'-like mentions therein; after listening to it
you will forget lawyers even exist. Probably.

And to Dom,

If things ever turn sour (again) between you & your new paramour David,
I'll marry you myself.

Subject: XTC on Where are They Now

Caught most of the VH1 Where are They Now show last night. While it
was enjoyable (and a little excruciating) seeing so many 80's English
bands, I also felt the coverage on XTC could have been a little
better. They didn't even mention AV1, although they briefly showed the
cover of TB.
I have mixed feelings about XTC appearing on a program called Where
are They Now. One one hand, I suppose it's good publicity, and the
producers of that show seem to fairly often find artists who are mking
a comeback in one form or another. On the other hand, it lumps them in
with a lot of lessers (Wang Chung, Bow Wow Wow, etc) who either aren't
performing together anymore or are doing the oldies reunion tour thing
(which has always struck me as a little pathetic, both for the band
and the audience). I would prefer XTC to get exposure for their
current projects, not for being a decade old blip on the music scene.

Hate to be the one to nitpick, but the concert at Frejus from "URGH!"
featured only XTC, Skafish, The Police, and UB40. The Oingo Boingo
segment was filmed at a concert in California with the Go Gos and the
Alley Cats. Incidentally, AP's performance in the film is so awkward, it
is easy to see why he gets anxious playing in front of a crowd.

What would appear as the sound of the 90's if Andy Partridge had made
"The History of Rock'n'Roll" now ?

My guess is that it would be a hip-hop rhythm...

I watched the VH1 thing.
D-U-M-B, that is how I spell Limahl's (from Kajagoogoo) haircut in my
dictionary.
XTC's section was too short, didnt mention Dave Gregory, didnt mention
Apple Venus, etc...
It sucked, but at least Colin got in ONE word.

Well, folks, I know that everyone was on the net within minutes to express
their dissatisfaction. But I stayed up and watched it, by God, so I'm
going to comment.

Well. Besides sticking XTC at the very end, VH1 never even mentioned the
coming of Apple Venus (which makes me wonder when the segment was actually
shot--does anyone know?). though they did mention Transistor Blast. And
while they showed the covers of Black Sea and White Music, they didn't
identify them, and they said that "they made it big with the singles Dear
God and The Mayor of Simpleton." Agh! What about the ten years _before_
Skylarking? Grump grump grump. They were much bigger with their early
stuff than they ever were later.
