Great response so far! It should be serious sycophant phun. ...more than
enough to keep me fed all year.

If you want more details, check the webpage or email me at:
richard@tactics.com

With any luck, we'll have full control of the sound for the evening. I'll
be playing DeeJay, so XTC songs that you've never heard will be played
(yeah, I know, I know... I hear the skeptics. ....care to make a
wager?) as well as tribute covers from the Chalkhills' Children series and
perhaps a few live acoustic performances. ...more than enough to keep me
fed all year.

With all the musical pearls that may be harvested (...more than enough to
keep me fed all year) and held to the light, Mitch and his deep collection
will still be missed.

Cheers, Richard

I guess this pretty much sums up the way mainstream America feels about XTC:

We were watching Rock & Roll Jeopardy on VH1 last night. The contestants
are ripping through the board at break-neck pace when up pops a
question--sorry, an *answer* --about an '80s hit caled "Senses Working
Overtime". Nothing but blank stares from all three contestants. Made me
want to hurl heavy objects at the set. But I gotta bad back.

Every Friday our local alternative station 106.7 THE END calls out for
listener requests for a segment they do called the Ancient End (all old
stuff.) Anyhoo, of course, someone requested Making Plans For Nigel,
which dear hostess Laura Jones said came from the band's 1980 album
Drums & Wires. (1980?????) And that the band would tour after AV2 was
released. (Now why didn't we hear that first???????)

I hope this isn't old news already.
On a whim I surfed on over to CDNow and lo and behold, they are taking pre-
orders for AV1. At $12.49 plus S&H, it sounds like a good deal. They have the
release date still listed as Feb 23.
Thanks to all the folks out there for their recommendations and best of lists.
They have pointed me in the direction of some really great music that I would
have never heard about.

Chalkers,

There is so much to say! Yikes!

1) Anyone noticed that there are two copies of "Apple Venus" being auctioned
off on eBay? I stopped bidding at $40 -- quite a bit for a CD, wouldn't you
say? There's still time to bid on both, so I hope some lucky 'Hillian gets
'em.

2) Today, I bought "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" and Suzanne Vega's
"99.9F." Both are amazing albums, for completely different reasons...I'd
recommend them without reservation. Also, because of Dean (and other
Chalkers), I picked up the New Radicals' album "Maybe You've Been
Brainwashed, Too." At first, I found the single ("You Get What You Give")
incredibly annoying, but it's growing on me. "Mother, We Just Can't Get
Enough" is also a wonderful song (with possibly the strangest spoken intro
I've ever heard!)

3)I'm so so so so so excited about "AV1." I'll even buy the LP, so I can
hang it in my XTC shrine! ;-)

4) While babysitting last night, I saw my first "Rugrats" episode. According
to the credits, Mark and Bob Mothersbaugh wrote the music. Weren't they in
Devo? Ha ha. "Are we not men? We are car-toons...!"

5) If I need to say this every post, I will: Babybird's "Ugly Beautiful"
should be in your collection. So should "There's Something Going On," but
buy "UB" first. (College students can be so annoying, can't they?)

Hmmm...That's about it. I'm driving back to college tomorrow, so I'll
cyber-talk to y'all from Maine next time. And I think it'd be great to get
some sort of Internet chatroom going when "AV1" is released...The power of
the 'Net is magical, ain't it?

TB at a cost of $80 Australian is actually an excellent price.
If you compare the price in $US at amazon.com, it's around $45.
DO the exchange rate calculations, and it comes to about $AUS75.
Add another $10 air mail, and you have this "rip off" import store

For those of you wanting to track down a copy, I recommend the

dozens of used bookstores (if not more) mostly in the U.S., but some
from Britain and Australia, too. You can order books directly from

of times, and have found it very useful. By the way, a similar site
for music is gemm-www.gemm.com. Also a pretty useful site for finding

Hello my friends,

I hope this hasn't been already addressed on this list, as it may be very
old, but I doubt it. Here goes:

I was at Planet Hollywood in Caesar's Palace last weekend (Vegas, not Rome)
and I thought I heard some familiar music, specifically, the opening riff
of Mayor of Simpleton (still waiting to wake up and see that Dave never
left, and he's in the shower!) so I looked around, and I saw this big
display showing a Tom Arnold montage, featuring clips from True Lies, Nine
Months, and many other less successful films, all to the tune of Mayor of
Simpleton. I guess it was appropriate, but frankly, I was just thrilled
that PH chose XTC for their montage! It's easily been what, ten years since
O&L? We must never forget.

In regards to the query about minidisc.
I use it in an 8 track home recorder, and the quality is excellent.
It is near CD quality, in fact, the difference is imperceptible. The MD
should replace the cassette. It holds the equivalent of a CD (74mins).
I have heard that Sony will push the MD on to the market.

I'd just like to give me two pen'worth on the great REM debate. (All IMHO
I'd like to state!)

I think it's probably a futile thing to compare REM and XTC, 'cos they're
just so damn different. (Let's face it, XTC are so different to *any* other
band!) I do think that REM used to be quite brilliant at what they did. In
common with one or two other posters on the list I think they lost it once
they signed to Warners. Automatic was good, Green had a couple of moments,
but everything else has been quite dire. (Soz, but I really don't like "Up",
I think Stipe's voice has done a Stevie Nicks!)

But nothing will ever touch Life's Rich Pageant. That album is utterly
superb. (Don Gehman, *top* producer.)

The best gig I ever saw was in 1987 at the Hammersmith Odeon - REM (on the
"Document" tour) supported by 10,000 Maniacs. Once we'd got over how
brilliant 10,000 Maniacs were, we thought that REM were going to embarass
themselves, but no-oooo. They were absolutely incredible. Pete Buck threw
himself round the stage like an American Pete Townshend to be the focal
point of the evening. I know he's not technically the best guitarist that
ever lived, but he played some great riffs in his time and I just lurve that
Rickenbacker/AC30 sound!

I think that they got so big they got like U2, where they could fart down
the mic and still sell a billion copies. Much of the public only like bands
when they get huge, so there's a snowball effect. 'Oh, s/he's got "Wind Down
the Mic" by REM, so I'd better buy it too.' It gets to the point where it's
not really got so much to do with music, more to do with fashion. It must be
really hard to keep your musical integrity when you know you can get away
with making crap and sell shed loads of it.

One last thing, I have to disagree with the posting about Chalkhills being
like a dying dog (apologies, I can't remember who it was who made the
posting). I'm really enjoying it at the moment, I think it's vibrant. The
fact that there's a digest most days from a discussion group of a band
that's released nothing new in seven years is staggering! I'm especially
enjoying the outspoken postings of people like Duncan (even though we
disagree on so much! <g>) and Dom. It'd be really dull if we all agreed on
everything!

Finally got hold of a copy of Transistor Blast last week, it's not the kind
of release I'd normally buy, but seeing as it's XTC...!

Anyway, on the whole it's as I expected it to be in that the session
versions of the later songs, generally don't shine as the studio versions
do. Things like "Seagulls" really badly lack the wonderful atmosphere of the
album. (I think there are noteable exceptions like Scarecrow People, which I
love on TB).

The thing that really strikes me though are the session versions of the
earlier songs. You can see why they chose Life Begins at the Hop as the
opener. It is *stunning*. Just bursting with life and energy. Roads Girdle
the Globe is another one that really impresses me. I never really got on
with the Drums and Wires version, but again it just has all the energy that
Steve Lillywhite has always been incabable of harnessing. (Steve Lillywhite:
surely the world's most overrated producer. Yes, I know he didn't produce
all the earlier stuff.)

I didn't realise what fantastic guitar *sounds* that Andy and Dave used to
get playing live (I only got into XTC "properly" when English Settlement was
released and never saw them live, sadly).

I quite like the second live CD, again some of the guitar sounds are just
fantastic; it's just a shame some of them are played at breakneck speed and
tend to loose some of the subtelty, which I don't think is always made up
for in the energy of the performance. They were bloody tight though, it's
all very impressively played!

It's really brilliant to hear "new" stuff with Terry drumming. Does anyone
else have the song book of the lyrics/chords for some of the early stuff?
There's a great quote from Terry that goes something along the lines of
"'ere, do you reckon those fuckers in Kaftans will 'ave our hands off if we
ask for another drink?" I'm sure someone will know the exact quote, it's a
long time since I saw the book though... the comment like his drumming
wasn't the most subtle, but I miss him!

All in all, definitely worth eighteen quid...

Hello all.

I was remarking to a friend recently how each of the last 3 XTC albums
has had its title mentioned in a song from the previous one (e.g.
"some NONSUCH net holds me aloft"). I'm sure this has been mentioned
on this list already, but my point is this: The friend indicated that
I was becoming anal to the point of being an anorak. "Ah," I thought,
"time to join an XTC mailing list".

So here I am.

I have the albums from "Mummer" onwards along with "Fossil Fuel" but
nothing earlier than that as, basically, I don't really like it (in
fact I don't like much of "Mummer").

I was a longtime member of the Divine Comedy mailing list, Europop. It
was a very warm and welcoming list.

Can you all do warm and welcoming for me?

Please chaps,
if you feel the need to flaunt your cunning attacks on people who cant
spell or type,
DO IT PRIVATELY !
The issues of Chalkhills are coming thick and fast now, so the less
garbage there is to read (and that includes attacks on other garbage)
the more time I have.
...I suppse I'm doing the same thing though, aren't I?

thanks,

Re:Info overload...

I agree with Dan Phipps. It is definitely unreal the inside info we get
around here. I know some people on this list express contempt for
those in contact with the band. Which to me is absurd. I crave every
bit of knowledge. To those who would be bitter, you don't know how
lucky you are to be so close to the source...albeit in a "virtual"
manner.

Frankly I like the fact that Amanda/Lady Plum is in contact w/Dave. It
shows that in some cases true passion is actually rewarded. And
speaking of which...

Re: Remoulds Follow-up

Gee it's great to hear Dave's working on a follow-up to Remoulds.
REMOULDS, the one cd there's only 30 copies of in the world, which he's
given to friends and told them not to copy for other people. Come on
guy. Either work out those administrative things so you can release it
properly or let Amanda and whoever else make tapes for us. I mean this
is just cruel. Let us in to your solo album world!!!

Re: Raygun Interview and recent interviews in general

I too was somewhat taken aback by Andy's comments in the interview and
to some extent the content of his interview posted at Little
Lighthouse. And even Terry(I'm tired of talking about the greatest band
in the world that I walked away from) Chambers's interview for that
matter. There's lots of negativity and indifference coming from the XTC
camp. I assume there will be more. Hopefully nothing too cringe
worthy. I know Andy's bitter these days (and to some extent with good
reason) but geez!

Since he is now aware of us, and has alluded to us in print, hopefully
we won't end up getting blasted...though it's not as if we haven't
ranted about what he should and shouldn't do with his life. I don't
know. It's cool to read all these interviews/articles after all of this
time but I can't help but be a little worried that Andy's scorching
comments might make a the forthcoming Apple taste a little sour to me.
Probably not. I'm sure I'll probably be knocking people out of the way
to get my hands on the vinyl version. But I do wonder.

Cheers,

KL

Oh boy, this is going way too far. I'm not a fan of Rush, but I really
don't think he's a racist. My dad listens to him, but he isn't a member
of the KKK, so I'd better watch it if I were you. Not all Rush Limbaugh
fans are racists. Don't generalize like that. I hate people who
generalize things.

Molly

Rush Limbaugh---Oh-kay. So if Hitler had a radio show and he used "Generals
and Majors" as a bumper...oh never mind. I am so disappointed in you
people. I walked away from talk radio two years ago. I was dismayed to see
it rear it's ugly head here. Since I am not one to say what can and not be
discussed on this list, I won't try to stop it. BUT since some of you
people have come out with your love for old fashioned bigotry and prejudice
wrapped up in homespun country aw-shucks demeanor, a price must be paid.
You must now hear my rant about....Ally McBeal.

What is the Deal with that show? It's so well written and acted but it is
so damn annoying. Producer David Kelley's musical tastes are so MOR it's
sick making. I think that's what kills me the most. If he was into XTC or
something but Christ. When that girl sings those sappy 70's covers, I want
to run for the hills. But I can't. Because that show is like a car crash.
You just can't turn away. And you never know what the hell is going to
happen. Bruce Willis randomly appeared this week as a shrink. Zowie!

Suck on that dittoheads. I gotta go. I hear there's a KKK rally coming up.
Normally I wouldn't go but I hear that someone there might sing "Yacht
Dance".

All apologies,

KL

Hullo everyone !

Well, they may be mini, but you can still put a lot of music on them.
Problem with CD-R is that you either have a cheap CD-Rom you can write
on only once, and then it's done. Or you take terribly expensive
CD-Rewrites, that cost about 10 (hehe, just found the Euro symbol on
my keyboard) in Germany, and only run on a special CD-RW player which is
expensive, too.
Minidiscs don't cost a lot, are rewriteable and the players aren't
expensive, too. Still, they're crap somehow, some people say, as they
simply cut off frequencies in the low areas (below 30 Hz, I think), when
these frequencies are so quiet you can't hear them anyway (according to
the Phon curves). The same is done with extremely high frequencies.
Still, it's proven that humans can distinguish sounds which have these
frequencies from sounds that haven't. But does one hear such sounds in
pop music ? No. You find these in classical avantgarde, but then you'll
only hear it , and people that have heard it were in such a situation,
I'd suppose; in a test room in a studio were you have like $10,000
speakers and cables who are $ 2000 per meter.
So, I don't hear a difference from minidisc to neither vinyl nor CD nor
self-recorded stuff on a 8-track, and my ears aren't that bad.
I'd say, a minidisc is a better alternative to a CD-RW, not as good as a
DAT tape, though. Unfortunately, I don't own anything like that, just my
old tape from a secondhand market (and turntable and CD of course).
(And NO, I'm not in any way representing a minidisc company)

What ? Where ? I want one ? Paul, wenn Du was rauskriegst, Termine,
Nummern, Netzseiten, Emails, irgendwas, schick sie mir, ja ?
Or in English:
If anyone whose name could or could not be Paul finds out about any
dates, contact addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, websites or
anything else about Mr Partridge coming to Germany to promote Apple
Venus please contact me under:

3. Didn't like someone defended David Oh saying he didn't have a "s" on
his keyboard ? Then how come he can write like "but it'z not artistic
expression" ?
Ah shit, actually wanted to ignore that topic, but couldn't resist.

Dancing all day to a disco type from Germany...
