Would the first Skylarking LPs with the track "Murmaid Smiled" as
opposed to "Dear God" be somewhat of a collector's item?? Are these
common, or quite hard to find????

Just to confirm what has already been writ: there appears to be NO bonus
tracks included on the Japanese release of Apple Venus. Also, no special
packaging. In short, there now appears to be no sane reason to buy the
Japanese (unless you're Japanese).

I can see why AP decided to nix the extra demos. It might somehow tarnish
the listening experience of a work of art from start to finish to hear
lesser versions of already heard songs. That's what it would make sense to
include them on an extra bonus CD! Now I wonder if these demos will ever be
made available like XTC has done in the past on singles, EPs etc??

I don't think anybody's used "Exploding Truss", "Inevitable Groin", or
"Ear, Nose & Throat" yet. Would one of these be suitable? :)

Yes, Dave is on the left, Andy on the right. Andy plays the slashing
chords on "Life Begins at the Hop", Dave plays the repetitive melody.

Well, it's definitely true. But I think they used the single version
for "Transistor Blast". I compared the versions on "Transistor Blast"
and "Fossil Fuel" and the latter version is much cleaner sounding.
Separation is better and the instruments are crisper. The "Transistor
Blast" version is muddier (and perhaps a touch faster).

This is only true using little rectangles to reproduce the sound,
which is impossible with analogue electronics. It is theoretically
possible to reproduce analogue signals ABSOLUTELY VERBATIM.
(I think that absolutely is redundant there, but hey.) Sine waves
are used to reproduce the sound instead, they are very smooth and
nice and analogue. Next theory please.

As to Bill Davups making Papersnow available on the web: top-
hole. Does AP sing the high voice of the chorus slightly flat on
purpose? If so, it's masterful.

It isn't really that hard to get advance copies of new albums if you:

A. Work at a record store (like my friend used to) as a buyer, and
B. Know the label rep and let it be known that you would LOVE a
pre-release promo by <fill-in-the-artist-here>.

Also, it can work if you:

C. Know someone who is a buyer at a record store (like my friend used
to), and
D. Let it be known you would LOVE a pre-release promo by
<fill-in-the-artist-here>.

This can net you at least:

E. An advance promo by <fill-in-the-artist-here>, or
F. A 1st or 2nd generation dub of the advance promo (which is how I was
lucky enough to get an advance copy of "Nonsvch" a couple of months
before it came out, via friend as noted above).

But you, Molly, have the power of college radio on your side!

So either:

G. Get on the horn with your local TVT distributor and tell him you'd
be MORE than happy to play those TVT promos that are piling up in the
corner of your college radio station (lie if necessary) if

H. He or she would only toss an "Apple Venus, Vol. 1" advance promo
your way.

Or:

I. Wait 'til the damn thing comes out for real, like me this time
(since my friend doesn't work at a record store anymore)!

Chalkers,
I just wanted to let you guys and gals know that I'm sorry for my
harshness. I was in a very stressed out mood, and I took it out on you
guys who are going to buy the Japanese import. Do what you want. I
might even buy it someday, if I get the money.
As other people have said that we're all frustrated for AV to come
out, and I'm just getting so anxious to get my hands on it. And reading
the last digest the release date is yet again put back until the end of
February. I can't handle it. I'll just have to listen to the demos I
got and wait.
I know when I get it I'll play it on my radio show at school so
people can hear it. It's going to be amazing. I hope the rest of the
radio stations play it. I have connections and I'll see what I can do
here in Buffalo.
     Well, enough of my ramblings.

Okay, I haven't heard the demos. I resisted the powerful urge to listen
to the MP3. I have read the lyrics that are up at Chalkhills, and they
are truly dee-vine. I've read all the commentary in Song Stories. I've
read the reviews. I can wait. I can wait.
But the wait would be nicer if _someone_ had cover art for Apple Venus
that could be put up at Chalkhills. Are you telling me that _none_ of
you terribly connected people can supply that?

Travels in Nihilon is a novel by British writer Alan Sillitoe. Apperantly
the song is based on/inspired by the book, I seem to recall reading an
interview with Andy Partridge years ago where he mentioned it. I checked
this book out of the library once about 15 years ago, and found it too dull
to read. I recall it being sort of post-apacopyptic or something. There were
maps of this imaginary land of Nihilon, too. Can't really remember much
else.

Hey-ho

Molly spouted:
>I think the people of Chalkhills should have each

And do you think giving out THOUSANDS of copies is
going to do the band any good? Last I checked they
were not a chartiy organization or if you please
organisation.

I, for one, look forward to walking into Tower
Records or Newbury Comics, which ever I reach first
and seeing it sitting in the bin marked XTC. I get a
little thrill every time I see at least one sitting
there. I walked into a Strawberries today and saw
"Nonsuch" sitting in the allotted XTC space. I
haven't seen it out in a bin for someone to discover
for quite sometime. AND I will take great pleasure in
forking out whatever amount is necessary to get that
disc to my house and on my hi-fi. I don't have the
money to splurge but god knows I will figure out a
way to pay for it.

So Apple Venus is set to be release around the 17th
of Feb...someone had mentioned the 16th and I nearly
swooned for that is my B-day. Can you imagine?
Having the new album released on your birthday? Well
this is going to be the ultimate b-day gift to
myself. It's so hard to believe that the long long
wait is nearly over. My toes are tingly with
anticipation!

Okay, now for all those who have received advanced

I bow before your superior wisdom, Mr Sherwood. How could I be such a
fool? You're right of course - it was 1980. Oh well ... looks like I'll
just have to get the text of "Chalkhills" and "Song Stories" tattooed
onto my body for future instant reference.

But point taken, and well expressed Harrison! (Unusually brief, though)

Amanda - I'll go on record as saying that Dave, Andy and Colin can call
me collect - ANYTIME, day or night! And I will even go so far as to
offer to mortgage my house to pay for a tour if they will agree to come
to Australia one more time. My only condition? They either have to ask
Dave and/or Barry to come back, or get Mike Keneally. Of course Terry's
already here, so I'll save on one plane fare.

Jon opined:

>Wow! You must have a deeply hidden fetish for Mark Knopfler.

Erk! Jon, I can assure you that is NOT the case. Have you ever seen a
piccy of Knopfler with ... *shudder* ... no shirt on? That would be
enough to scare Elton John straight.

>Actually I think your attack is a little groundless as Mark is one of
>the better guitarists to emerge from the 70's/80's rock era.

Umm, I disagree - I think he is a competent though highly derivative
guitarist, a frankly crap singer, but not a bad writer. But hey, that's
just me. Feel free to disagree. What? You did already?

Man, I've heard enough Dire Straits to last several lifetimes. If you
like it, that's cool. I was just expressing *my* opinion, not telling
you how to think.

>Oh and by the way this has nothing to do with XTC.

You're right. How inconsiderate of me - I'll kill myself immediately.

>I did like the insight on the Valium withdrawl symptoms though. That

Thanks - Harrison corrected me on some of the details of course, but I
still think it woudl have had a major bearing on his overall well-being,
and I don't think it's inconceivable that it would have taken a year or
two for Andy's system to get back to "normal" and let in enough of the
"real world" again to lead to the kind of overload that he obviously
suffered.

I also wonder what prompted Marianne to chuck them out. She was brave -
having cared for my Valium-addicted granny, and being at one point
compelled to flush her "stash", I can assure you it's not a action they
take kindly to.

Why thank you! Which bits do you disagree with? (Personal reply

I'm crushed by your Wildean put-down, Jon. Obtuse *AND* unfunny? Geez,
you really know how to hurt a guy. And after leading me on with all
those compliments, too. You rotter.

Iain:

Loved the G&S parody. I must say that it indicates certain worrying
features, such as:

1. an unhealthy over-familiarity with the comic opera genre

2. the tell-tale signs of a man with too much time on his hands

Maybe next time you could go "popular" and do one to a tune by Gilbert
O'Sullivan?

(BTW - thanks for the Richard Thompson tape - great stuff!)

That's all folks!

Looking for a band name?

I've always had a few potential band names in mind, just in case...
You're welcome to them, I wont be using them.

These Vagabond Shoes-Its from the song 'New York New York'. might work
well if you're in a swing band

Hootenanny Nuns-I just like the name. It's silly. Back in the 60's nuns
all decided they were folksingers. Why was this?

Psychic Pets-This is the title of a book I saw once. Sounds kind of
80's for a band name, though.

Orange Mom-My college friend Gerri wanted to form a band with this
name. She was from New Jersey, and used to pronounce it "ahrwenge". I
used to buy homeaker's magazines, cut out the pictures of mothers from
the ads, color them orange and mail them to her. For some reason she
always found this annoying. Then I grew up.

***XTC content: Ok, I missed the boat on Song Stories. What is it, and
where can I get it?

I watched a dark, nasty, amusing/disturbing British comedy (?) today called
"Intimate Relations", with Rupert Graves and Julie Walters, and in one scene
a group of girls at a birthday party play this game.... just info for those

Chris wrote in #62: "A little XTC content: I've found XTC to be a really
handy high scoring word in Scrabble, especially in a multiple word score. It

Not to be really picky or anything, but "XTC" is not a legal scrabble
word (let alone a word at all) because it is proper name (of a group in this
case). Unless you are playing with some relaxed rules, you would
unfortunately lose your turn!

A chance to correct myself: In a recent post I'd requested that posters
refrain from commenting on any band or act other than XTC. Of course
discussion of other bands or acts is relevant. I intended to ask that we
refrain from attempting to tear apart (or to perform a "stirring" as an
Australian friend recently informed me) other bands or acts in direct ways
that only serve to piss off the fans of that group or act. Simply send
personal e-mails or keep it to yourself. This being said, I want to make it
clear that I reserve a right to rip on XTC in any way I see fit (this IS about
XTC, isn't it?) and I hope no one else hesitates in that regard. Yes we all
love XTC but some healthy negativity or doubt (about them only please!) is
good for the blood.

Looking forward to negative comments about XTC,

Why should Sarth Effrica be any different from the rest of the world,
Michael? It's been like that in Sydney for decades.

[BTW - are you THE Mike Myers, or just A Mike Myers?]

On a tangent - I vaguely remember that XTC inadvertently fell foul of
the apartheid regime's censorship during the 80's. Was "Nearly Africa"
banned at some stage?

Simon - I'm deeply concerned for your aural welfare, and dismayed that
The Church have failed to make a favourable impression on you. Which
album/s are we talking about here? Methinks you might have picked up on
one of their more recent - and less essential - efforts like
"Priest=Aura". Try any of the early albums - "Of Skins & Heart",
"Blurred Crusade", "Seance" or "Heyday". The 2CD compilation "Hindsight"
is also great.

Ooooh, that's so bitchy! I can almost see the headline in tomorrow's
News of the World:

re:

I'm sure this is a great album - but puh-leeeease! what a totally dicko
yuppie title. I've haven't heard anything this dweeby since ... well,
since Tanita's first single. Who can forget "Twist in my sobriety"? I
wish I could.

I try to please in my own 'umble way , John. It's not easy being a
sarcastic, flippant, obtuse wanker, and you can never really be sure
that people appreciate the effort - until you get that audience
feedback. Thank you. It's great to back in your beautiful country once
again. I would also like to thank my thirteen brothers and sisters, and
my husband who is also my manager, Rene ... aaargh! wait a minute -
what's happening to me?

Well, Per, you can lead a horse to water ... But you're right - in a
sense. Listening is a personal, subjective experience. If you *think*
they sounds different to you, then they are different. My point was that
it is a PURELY subjective, crazy, mixed-up, wrong-headed, irrational,
emotional viewpoint. You can't justify it in any scientific way ... but
as long as it makes you happy, I'm happy for you.

re: Sonic Youth:

I'm not dissing the band, but aren't they being a bit misleading with
the product description. Surely it's about time they renamed themselves
... Sonic Early-Middle-Age ?

Or have they been taking those "Let's pretend to be 19 forever" classes
that Bryan Adams has been getting such good marks in?

Chris also said:

I haven't laughed so much for ages! Lou's voice worse? How could you
tell? I love the guy's work, but I'd be the first to admit that, like
Dylan (or more recently Billy Corgan) the "trick" with Lou is accepting
the fact that he just doesn't have a normal singing voice. Once you get
past that, you're in.

My favourite saying about Grumpy Ol' Lou is one I read from John Cale,
who mused in Mojo some time ago:

"How could anyone who can write such beautiful, sensitive songs be the
complete opposite as a person?"

As for Neil, well he sounds pretty much the same as he always did ...
brilliant. My wife disagrees. She says it's a boy thing.

Hi Chalkboarders!

I enjoy all the stuff you post, I do page down when I'm in a hurry, so
no harm done unless I choose to be harmed. I remember a time when
talking about odd meter was taboo... now we're onto Rush (rump roast)
Limbaugh, aint progress great?

Bio: I'm always smiling when I respond. Use 2 fingers to type. I'm old
and grey. Politics and religon suck (unless you catch me praying to
move up the line to kiss my boss' butt). Wish xTc and jazz were never
used in the same sentance again (I love both too much). Will buy
anything DG puts out.

You bet!... and as a tip for Dave (pass this along "Friends Of Dave")
Fripp has a need for a guitarist (to replace himself) to do a Crim
revival. ....

>From Fripps Diary Jan 13th/99:
(http://www.discipline.co.uk/dgm/dgm.htm) The Third Bright Wheeze is
my response to ongoing approaches from Ian & Greg regarding a Crimso 69
reformation. I presented it to Ian during the `phone call referred to
above (late 1997), and to Greg & his manager Bruce Pilato (Autumn 1998).

I have no interest in taking part in Crimson 69, but support the other
guys if they would like to. Steve Hackett is my suggestion for the
guitar stool. Steve was at the 1969 Marquee shows; very influenced by
the 1969 group; a name player of the same generation; and has worked
with Ian on some core Crim 69 material. This is not King Crimson, but
might be Crimson 69. I would support the venture, so the public
presentation is positive.

One good thing about DavidO...

his posts have made me enjoy Dom's!
(have I been here too long?!)

Digital vs analog.....Shall we compare digital photography to film
photography? Same effect.

The argument FOR analog (though futile) still holds in principal.
Current sampling technology "standards" are for mass consumption, easy
deliverables and money saved (maybe not at the consumer level however eh
Molly?). We eat what we're fed and devise ways to justify it.

Though that web article on this subject was long it just lacked a total
understanding. Don't fool your self thinking CD's aren't compressed and
punched up for delivery or that outboard gear can fill in the blanks due
to digitizing. A computer can't do a good job with these artistic
decisions.

Mini Disks are even less in fidelity, which was the compromise to a
industry which was screeming for a copy protection scheme if regular
folks were to record their own stuff.

Anywho, expect to throw away a ton of your digital material as new
"technologies" spring forth to consume your savings (gee maybe Molly IS
right..... naaa, that million $'z I got from Andy during tea will hold
me over for awhile).

Subject: I'd Like That...

Hello Chalkers,

I hate to admit that I'm one of those dread lurkers. I love reading the
list and everyone's thoughts about all things XTC. Up until this point, I
couldn't think of anything that I could say that would add anything to the
proceedings...until now.

Just came in from a band rehearsal, and my sweety, Jeff, sat me down and
said, "I have something for you. This is your lucky day..." And about 11:00
p.m. today, Pacific Standard Time, I heard the words that I knew would soon
be coming, but thrilled me to the bone when they finally arrived, emanating
from the stereo speakers, courtesy of my favorite local Seattle radio
station 103.7 FM, The Mountain...

"...and now, some new XTC from their upcoming album, 'Apple Venus, Volume
One.' The track I'll be playing for you is 'I'd Like That'..."

And suddenly, out pours Andy's smooth voice, Colin's silky bass, and Dave's
rhythmic acoustic guitar mixed into an aural confection that had me
spinning giddily through the room. Mere words can't describe to you all
what it was like to hear that song on the radio! Bittersweet, our band on
the airwaves...again...finally...and with wonderful new music! Ahh!! I'm so
happy for 'em; I'm beside myself! What a fangirl, I'll be high for days!!!
And the song itself? Absolute bliss! I don't dare give any more detail than
that. I don't want to ruin it for anyone else. Oh, and how desperately I
wanted to hear more...what can I say?

Jeff made an awesome recording of this first historic song, just for me to
hear, 'cause he knew I was going to miss it and would be sorely
disappointed. (Yes, he IS great! Thank you, Jeff!!)

Well, thanks much for bearing with me, folks. I just had to share my
"moment" with ya. I know we'll be hearing about many more just like it
soon. Hey Chalkers, "Where were you when they first played Apple Venus on
the radio?" I can't wait to read the stories...

Thanks for making me feel right at home. :-)

Much luv,
Suzanne

I might be totally wrong here (has happened before...) but isn't Jim Page
(Led Zeppelin and more) be in the league mentioned above. As I recall it he
lost one of his index-fingers somewhere around "Houses of the Holy" or
"Physical Grafitti". Or is this something I have dreamed up?
