Hello Children, A recent Chalkopic has been whether we should have expulsions or penalties for what is considered by some to be bad form or abusive posts. I personally have had off line discussions with both Dom Lawson and Simon Deane and have high opinions of both of them. I personally believe that you are wrong Simon. I don't believe in Internet Censorship and I would like to remind you that this group is moderated by an excellent individual named John Relph who does a great job of keeping things running smoothly. I will bow to what John says but I think that if you hang the threat of expulsion over contributors to this group it will become stale and boring. This is my opinion, I am not stating it as a fact. Also I fail to see what indignities you think Dom and the others have been posting. I understand your intent about the wind-ups but honestly what harm has it done and is this any different than what occurs in work places all over the world every day. Dom and Todd and Harrison were having a private joke in a public place I agree but what is wrong with that really? The work place has become very sensitive to the feelings of all the employees, overly so in my opionion. Life is not always fair or just and to try to emulate that type of Shargri-la on the web I think is a futile venture. I do not believe that this leisure time place needs those rules and I think they will do more harm than good. I thank you however for posting your opinions and suggestions in a logical, moderate way and I think you have done an excellent job of stating your view in a mostly unemotional way. Others could learn from your approach and I thank you for using it. A recent post about "The Adventure Club Sessions" CD from texas and George Gimarc caught my eye and I thought I would add the fact that George is a great guy and he regularly lists these CDs for sale. I bought one from him about a year ago. I don't think these items are rare but if you are interested by all means George is a stand up guy and you should not hesitate to do business with him. Also of note George wrote two books on the Punk?New Wave thing and XTC has content in both and on their accompanying Compact Discs. Both "Punk Diary" and "Post Punk Diary" are available from Amazon.com for about $16. I highly reccomend them as an interesting read into the punk/new waves scenes. Also Mike posted about Colins Demo's recently in regards to Fuzzy Warbles. >Does anyone else remember this? The statement in question was from Andy and what he said was that it was more difficult to find old stuff from Colin as he made a habit of reusing the same tapes to record his demos where as Andy used new or newer tapes more often so more of his old stuff exists. It simply is a matter of Colin having recorded over tracks that he wasn't happy with and Andy having saved his to perhaps be used in a different way later. Colin stuff does exist and Andy never said it didn't he simply said there was less of it available. As far as the tracks that Ian had posted on his excellent site.(**See below please Ian). They have been available to XTC tape traders for a good while and I had no difficulty in obtaining them. They are also for the most part very recent in comparison to the AP demo's that I have which go back nearly all the way to the genus of XTC. AND Andy writes more than Colin anyway, at a pace of probably 3 to 1 so if Warbles is a 4 disc set I would guess that Colin's content will comprise less than one disc total. Here's hoping I am completly wrong and the lads unearth some really rare stuff. Also thanks to Richard and Mitch for the recent posts. I think we all underestimate how lucky we are that these guys keep us so informed. I for one thank them very much for their efforts and can't wait to hear what comes next. On another note: I've given in. I can't take the wait anymore. Would
anyone be willing to hook me up with a CD-R copy of the new demos
("Boarded Up," "Stupidly Happy," etc.)? I don't have much to trade at
the moment, but could definitely track down some stuff when I go home
for break. Actually, I think I have an unopened copy of the "Nonsuch
Adult Contemporary Sampler" that I'd be more than willing to part
with...and I've got access to REM and Toad the Wet Sprocket boots that
can tape and trade for. (I myself don't have ready access to a CD
burner, unfortunately.) I could also send money.
And to think -- way back in '96, when I had a copy of those "new Andy
demos," I was on the top of the trading heap. Now I'm begging. Isn't
it amazing how things change? ;-)

Okay, I just discovered that the DVD Music "magazine" Circuit featured XTC in their second "issue." This came as a complete surprise to me, because I bought issues 1:1 and 1:3 but never saw 1:2 available in a store anywhere!! If the discs I already have are an indicator, there should be some interview material and at least one song to hear. If they had released a video for AV1, it would have been on there too, I'm sure... Me, too! I had an XTC dream last weekend. Mixed in among my usual dreams involving levitation and forgotten locker combinations, I dreamt that I went to an outdoor music festival. Colin and Andy were sitting on stools in the middle of a field, playing acoustic. Andy played a cover of Yoko Ono's song "I Felt Like Smashing My Face Through A Clear Glass Window". I got excited because I was the only one in the audience who recognized the song, so I decided to stand behind him and sing backup. This is a ridiculous dream, of course, because anyone familiar with this song knows that it just doesn't sound like something Andy would sing. After the song was over, I told Andy that the band Of Montreal had also covered the song and he looked surprised. And that's it. Not too elaborate. Not too symbolic (I don't think). When I first read Simon Doane's post in #5-305, I thought it was brilliant; just the thing to inject some life into an increasingly boring thread. Mais non. It turns out that that hilariously tortured earnestness was actually, um, earnest (importance of, see: Velvet Goldmine). I read the post in #5-308 in disbelief: "Oh, he MEANS it". I will not be the first or last to give kudos to Mssrs. Lawson and Sherwood for their defiantly individual slant on all things XTC-and-not-related. These are ideas, people, whether you like them or not. Sure, we could spend all our time talking about what XTC song we heard in the 7-11 and how cool that was (not that there's anything wrong with that), or, we could try to fill the gaps between XTCD'S with something a little different, or, God help us, fun? I would also suggest that, at certain risk to my future well-being, if Mr. Relph should excommunicate these sarcastic hooligans from Chalkhills he might also purge all self-righteous berks at the same time. (trying hard not to imagine him washing Erica's hair/Out of Africa style) sorry, but I digress like a woman... godd- that first paragraph was priceless.... In reponse to the typewriter font in the liner notes- I'm a graphic designer, recognized the font right away. Someone from TVT would have to provide Cactus Design the copy, they would have layed it out and given it back to TVT to approve- maybe showing it to Andy and Colin or maybe not, depending on how involved they were in the details of it. It's possible it was dealt with entirley by the label and the design studio. Anyway, it reminded me of the liner notes on TB that are so damn hard to read. Ultra hip and illegible. Did I miss any discussion regarding Andy's statement that Greenman is English folk music inspired and not Indian inspired? I was dumbfounded- after hearing the warbling he does on "pleaeaese to bend down..." on Homespun- c'mon- I didn't think that's how the guys in green tights in the forest sing, is it? Call me the village idiot too, but I guess I don't know enuf about English folk music... I'm seeing sari's and dots, too. While all involved that I've spoken to personally thought that Andy was a fantastic guest (the woman who books the guests said that he was easily the funniest she'd seen!), they've just got many more interviews than they have time to produce shows around them. I suppose that means that: a) the people that I talk to are lying to me and that they actually thought Andy was a miserable guest. Another wonderfully spontaneous and rough performance has just been released -- Pere Ubu's "Apocalypse Now", a mostly-acoustic set performed for the heck of it in a small club on what would've otherwise been a night off for them while they were on tour with the, um, Pixies, I think, in 1991.
