------------------------------ Message-Id: <3.0.2.32.19991101010447.006aec64@mail.interlog.com> Date: Mon, 01 Nov 1999 01:04:47 -0500 From: David Oh <davidoh@interlog.com> Subject: what have i got? also: a little respect, please greetings chalkpersons, i hope this finds you all well and happy. as i have only been on this list for just over a year, i may have missed this discussion, if it has indeed been mooted before, so i apologize in advance to those who might have a feeling of deja vu. i have a question about the cd version of 'the big express'. i received the cd for christmas a few years back, but i've only recently started to listen to it. however, i've made a discovery; there's something missing! on the back, in the lyric sheet and on the cd label itself, the 3 bonus tracks are listed ["red brick dream", "washaway" & "blue overall"], but when the cd plays, it goes from "this world over" straight to "the everyday story of smalltown". the displays on my cd players (i have 3; home, car & portable) display the track numbers for these two tracks as 5 and 6, with the total track numbers displaying 11, not 14 as the packaging indicates. i'm so confused (nothing new there, i know...), but i must ask; wussup wi' dat? do i have a rarity or have i been ripped-off? is this common or uncommon? does anybody else have this disc/packaging? is there a complete version available? if so, what should i look for? here are the details of the disc i have: virgin label, cat # cdv 2325, manufactured in the u.k. no other distinguishing marks as far as i can see. i have had the vinyl version of this album since its release, but as i was disappointed with mummer, i didn't give 'tbe' much attention. now that i've listened to it a few times recently, it's starting to grow on me. i only wish i could hear the bonus tracks along with the regular tracks (yes, i'm aware that they weren't on the original vinyl release). i have other thoughts on 'tbe', but i'll save them for another post. * ----------------------------------------------------------------------- onto a completely different, and very off, topic... page down if you must! i am contradicting myself in regards to previous rants i've made about off-topic posts, but i just have to express my feelings at this time here amongst friends. many people have posted off-topic threads in the past, which i have complained about - sometimes vociferously - even though i, too, have been guilty of this at times. today, i am guitly again, but i don't care. be forewarned, this is completely off-topic. i'll try to be brief: today (99-10-31), i am deeply shocked and saddened by the tragic death of racing driver greg moore, at just 24 years of age. as a canadian and a big-time motorsports fan, i feel very empty right now. he was a bright talent and a decent person in a world full of enormous celebrity egos and he will be sorely missed, at least by me. the sporting world in general, and the motorsports world specifically, is very much diminished by his passing. i realize that, in such a dangerous sport, these things can, and do, happen, sometimes inexplicably, and that the drivers know and accept the risks involved. i am aware, too, that there are some people who do not consider it to be a real sport in the first place. so be it. i don't feel like arguing about it, anyway. flame away if you will, but i don't care, i had to express my grief. i _will not_ respond to any of the flames that i know i will receive about this. i've had my say and now it is over, as far as i am concerned. davidoh

Bet yall didn't know that? So did Too Much Joy for that matter. I have that record, a classic! Though, its been re-released with extra tracks now! They Might Be Giants are not broken up, he just does some solo stuff. I still love Adam Ant, even though XTC won! Fishbone is the shiznit! Though, the guitarist now works in Whole Foods Market. It really sucks thinking that one of my favorite groups in the 80's ended up working at a market! Gang of Four, now that is a political group with a tight bunch of songs. Shriekback was cool too. I don't have to mention that, umm, well I am sure you all know that. :) Godfathers. They were great. Flesh for Lulu, Mighty Lemon Drops... ahh, the 80's spawned so much music in so little time. Killing Joke, Camper Van Beethoven, Run DMC and Minor Threat. Some of the great bands to come out of the 80's. Oh, Cross Wires was my second choice. Impatiently I await AV2. I am less fortunate then many of you as I have to sit here and listen to all the other stuff and have no demos of the new stuff. Who put all these boots and demos out anyway? I would not mind a nice gesture of kindness if someone were to send me a demo or 2! Speaking of Demo's, bootlegs, etc. I decided to make a CD set of all my XTC stuff. Sort of a greatest hits of my stereo kind of thing. I may have narrowed it to about 5 disks! Its hard to chose! Well, I would like to include a CD or 2 with all the rare stuff, b-sides, etc. I have all the CD's and the only rare thing I have is the Peter Pumpkin Head EP. If anyone would help me out with a few tracks, I would really appreciate it. I would make whoever helps a CD or 2 of whatever tracks they want. I run a mastering studio and have really worked the sound of some of the old classics. My good friend has mastered half of them, but gave up because of paying customers! Think of that, loosing out on the chance to listen to XTC all day just to make a few bucks (jk)! I must say, this offer only goes out to people who have paid for the albums. I wont sell these, because people like myself spent hundreds, maybe even thousands of dollars buying every record, cassette & CD from XTC and I would hate to see them lose money. I am only making this just to compile the tracks for myself so I can listen to a nice mastered CD collection. Plus, as anal as I am, I like to keep the originals in perfect shape and always make a backup copy of my most treasured CD's. Virgin must have been real cheap if they could not even master some of the old stuff. Also, I am only looking for rare stuff not available on the CD's, demos, remixes, compilation tracks, side projects, etc. If your interested, let me know. If you live in Southern California, we could either meet up, or we can exchange numbers and take it from there. Didn't it sound like he came in too late in Millions? Maybe that's just me...

I've also observed the behaviour of rodents to suddenly stop on the wheel. Most Gerbil wheels that I have seen have been really light-weight jobs with almost no inertia. Hence, if one increased the inertia of the wheel by attaching weights around the outside of the wheel, one might observe a small rodent making many trips full circle around the wheel! Of course a small rodent might have some difficulty in getting the wheel goind, but one could replace the 'wire through a hole' bearing at the centre with a real bearing to decrease the friction. This would be really really funny, and if the rodent in question didn't enjoy it, then it would stop going on it in the first place, so it wouldn't be cruel. Oh, and I like XTC too. Dames tWd 'Real' is an adjective and 'Really' is an adverb.

When people are willing >to make those kind of excuses for an artist, you're not going to get >anything like a disinterested view of what really happened. i saw brian wilson play last nite at the bridge school concert. he sat in a chair at the front of the stage and introduced each song and sang flat, off-key lead vocals while his band members smirked at each other and shook their heads, hitting all the high notes. at the end of the set the brian asked the audience if they wanted "some more good vibes" and they started into a confused *second* rendition of 'good vibrations', starting with the chorus. suddenly, as if he just remembered that they'd already played the song, he called "that's it!" and hurried off the stage without a goodnight to the fans. it was absolutely heart-breaking. it was bizarre. also, during the set when he was giving a little 'thanks for coming out and supporting bridge school' spiel he made some (inadvertantly tasteless) remark about helping "all the cripple children" and the crowd groaned their indignation. it was like watching a car accident; i stood there helpless watching everything go to hell. the rest of the concert was great. crowd favorite (and dark horse for me): pearl jam. what a performance! neil young must have known i was in the audience because he started his set with a 20-minute long banjo number about a dog. xtc did not play at the concert. no bands covered their songs. i did not hear their name mentioned at all, nor did i see any passing references or images pertaining to them. -dan

I just want to thank all of you who ever mentioned the
name The Might Be Giants here on the digests and some
extra thank you`s to those who said it was a great
band; I found "Lincoln" (from 1989) on vinyl a month
ago for the price of an ice-cream! - had never heard
them before, and the album is one of the best I've
heard for years ("every jumbled pile of person has a
thinking part that wonders what that part that isn't
thinking isn't thinking of" from "Where your eyes
don't go" - yeah, that's what I (...) always been
thinking! I love this song and also "Ana Ng" &
"They'll need a crane".
XTC-content: I'm trying to listen to some XTC demos
from the Live and Direct-site, but there's somethings
wrong with... something; the sound vanishes, comes
back, vanishes again, gets all weired etc (i'm using
real player G2). Have I missed some important
information? Is there a helpful soul out here (who
thinks he's got clue about this) who can mail me and
just give me a hint?

Man, I followed it a bit, I was almost ready to believe you, but then I read this: You have to connect the plasma conduit first to the primary intercooling vents, then shunt the excess through the EPS power taps running behind the matter/antimatter containment pods. Then: Flick on the rod and lightly spark the side of the integrator marked "matter" (NOT "anti-matter" or the neighbors will _really_ get pissed). This will disable the interruptive capacity of the Axual F/G switch, with the added benefit that the glow of the electrical arc will reveal a tiny chain lock behind the plasma metering unit. Oh yeah, right. Sacre moo, Homme de Batte, they're trying to kill us all! This CANNOT work and you know it. Why? It's simple: The bounded sequence of the logarithmic base is integrally proportional to the cotangent of the square root of the matrix, times the rate of diffusion, convergent to the y-intercept, when graphed octahedrally on a cotermind and consistently expanding plane, when the angle of depression "b" is the deteminant of the interpolation, increased in gradients by the chi-square value of pi. Every 5-year-old knows that! Well, I guess maybe not down there around Washington, DC, or wherever it is you come from. Sheesh!!! I sincerely hope you haven't scolded any fellow 'Hillers about their bad spelling, not after this performance! You ought to be ashamed! I'm in total agreement with what Chris (who digs White Music- awesome!) wrote in digest 300 about how amazing Ian Stewart's "XTC LIVE AND DIRECT" is. For me, this site is the best thing on the net right now. There are several Colin Moulding demos that I recently had the pleasure of hearing there- 22 in all, most I haven't heard til now. They are fabulous to the f-ing max! The songs "Spare A Penny", "I Feel Blue", and "I Overheard" are simply out of this world. Colin's songs here, like on the studio albums, shine like gold! Getting them on Fuzzy Warbles is what I really want to see happen. Thanks to Ian, again, for all the hard work in putting this great listening party going- job well done!! Now back to more Backsteet Boys, Britney Spears and lame commercials- now you know why I'm on the net while I work!
