I, too, profess a strong love for the works of John and John and I rate
their wordplay up there with Mr. Partridge. I think that the average joe,
however, isn't attuned to their rather oblique style - their songs are
almost always impressionistic readings on slices of life (see "Metal
Detector" on _Factory Showroom_ or "AKA Driver" on _John Henry_). In my
experience, the average TMBG fan actually *likes* the challenge in
decyphering the lyrics of the more unusual songs ("Pencil Rain" on
_Lincoln_, "Dead" on _Flood_, etc.). But another problem is that the band
is most well known for their songs that more closely approximate tunes
created for children's educational TV - "Particle Man," "James K. Polk" and
their covers of "Istanbul (Not Constantinople)" and "Why Does The Sun
Shine?"
But the Giants are somtimes more serious than you might think... witness:

I think TMBG are getting to a point where there are "newer" fans and
"older" fans. I guess some of the newer fans are touting _Factory Showroom_
as one of the better albums. I know some of the older fans strayed when
the Johns added a full band to their discs on _John Henry_... Personally, I
think the one-two punch of _Lincoln_ and _Flood_ hasn't been equalled yet,
even though I like _John Henry_ a whole lot. Lately, the Johns have been
mixing in more Dukes-like forrays into the past. "S-E-X-X-Y" and "Pet Name"
on _Factory Showroom_ are less traditional Giants numbers than pastiches of
70's music. And even more obscure numbers like "Out of Jail" and "First
Kiss" are throwbacks to early eighties tunes.
In other Non-XTC music, I just picked up the latest Matthew Sweet disc, _In
Reverse_... Sweet is on my short list of people whose new albums I'll buy
hearing-unheard... The new one doesn't have the immediate hookiness of
_100% Fun_, but it's a bit more varied in instrumentation, if not style.
I'll probably need a few more listens to pick out any real gems on this
one, but on the surface, it's at least immediate pop ear-candy, with a
silly/clever package done "in reverse," so to speak...
And in XTC music... I've recently got a CD burner, and I'd like to do some
collections. I tried to burn a collection of all the live XTC B-sides from
a cassette, and it came out a little less clean than I would have liked. I
think I'll pick up a copy of the Japanese CD "The Greatest" from Virgin
Megastore in Orlando this weekend, which would provide great sources for
some of the live cuts. I did realize that I dragged my feet on picking up a
copy of the "Adventure Club" CD that was being sold very widely in the
past, but now seems to have disappeared. I do have a fuzzy audio cassette
of XTC's whole appearance on KDGE in Dallas, but I'm sure the CD version of
"Blue Beret" would probably sound a lot nicer... If anyone knows where I
can pick this up, or has a copy they could burn (in trade for something
else), drop me an email. Similarly, I know some of you trade CD-Rs, and I'd
like to do some of that. If anyone has some URLs for those, I'd greatly
appreciate getting some of those in my private email.
Oh, another thing that I'd like to trade on CD-R is unusual Christmas
music. Gary Hooper wrote in digest #5-286 some of the stuff he had found,
and I wrote to him telling some of the stuff I have. If anyone else has (or
wants) some unusual/funny/modern/nontraditional Christmas music, drop me a
line...

XTC content.---Has anyone else noticed that more than one person has ended
their XTC album reviews with " I'm even starting to like Colins songs" or
words to that affect?Why is that? For great pop songs ,you cant beat Colins
writings. Sorry David, "Fruit Nut" is a fantastic song.

I like the way Colin strums the guitar on "Frivolous Tonight." "Fruit Nut" is more uptempo and comical. LOVE COLIN'S DEMOS!!! I have both CDs in the player (the second being, of course, the "spoken" disc of how three of the songs came to be). Ever. 4) Idea Studios has really come together with the help of Nick Davis (mixmaster of AVv1). Nick is the "Producer" of AVv2. Beyond his engineering work on the music, he has been very helpful in getting the right electronics in the studio as well as acoustic treatments. 5) Chalkhillbilly Steve Oleson's wild montage photography will be gracing the walls of Idea Recording Studios outside of Swindon. 6) Ken and Rich Burns, the gents who have done the "Civil War" and "Baseball" documentary series, are doing (have done?) a documentary about New York and have sought permission to use "Frost Circus" in it's soundtrack. 7) On the subject of rappers covering "Dear God." Andy likes Shootyz Groove better than Heavy D's version (not that Andy is into rap, he just said he liked it "better"). 8) Andy was quite intrigued by my idea about the "King For A Day" tribute site. The spec is in the hands of my webmaster and he is extremely busy right now, so no big news at the moment. Andy and I also had some fun retrospective talk about the Chalkhills' Children series. 9) I asked Andy which of Colin's songs he wished he had written. Without hesitation, he replied "Bungalow." He said it was the English seaside captured in sonic form. His second choice was "Making Plans For Nigel" though he added that he had a major hand in it's final state. So all those people who have groused about Bungalow at length will now have to go back and reconsider it! Lastly, it appears that "Homespun" may be pulled from distribution. It is creating some confusion in the marketplace (same songs / similar artwork) and TVT, having shipped something like 17,000 in the U.S. are going to stop distribution at 20,000. It may later be offered via the web. It was only mentioned in reference to the U.S. and I'm not sure it's even "official" yet. If you want it for your ears and eyes, get it now. If you want it for a speculative investment to later sell on Ebay, buy stock in Qwest. Homespun may be offered via the TVT website. John Wedemeyer told me that the Japanese version has some additional stuff on it but I didn't see any mention of that on Chalkhills (of course, I've been really skimming over a lot of stuff lately). latest was finally released here in the U.S., though two of their best

country that it always fails to release many of the really essential albums

times better than their previous,

Nat King Cole Christmas Album -mostly standard songs and carols, but he's so good I'd enjoy listening to him sing DOS line commands. It's worth picking up this recording just to hear the stunning little gem, "A Cradle in Bethlehem". A Charlie Brown Christmas -soundtrack to the TV special, with cool jazzy tunes by the Vince Gauraldi Trio. *------ Here's a recommendation for all here at Chalkhills. The new album by Jon Hassel, "Fascinoma". Jon Hassel is a trumpeter/composer who has released 11 or so records since about 1975. His music is hard to categorize. He has an utterly unique voice in the sea of popular music. He combines eastern melodies with African rhythms and mixes them with western electronics and processing to create a magical, mysterious musical brew. He's also not afraid to try out the latest trends -his brilliant '94 release, "Dressing for Pleasure" was basically a hip-hop record. With "Fascinoma", Hassel returns to a more jazzy, acoustic sound, and lightens up on the rhythmic-sampling wall of sound which has been his trademark in the past. The last track, Estate(Summer), is simply one of the most beautiful pieces of music I've ever come across. Hassel plays a simple, melancholy melody with his breathy expressive trumpet, accompanied only by the jazzy, Ravelesque piano of Jackie Terrason. It haunts me. Subtle, surprising, quiet, and very, very deep. Right now for me, it's between Fascinoma and AV1 for album of the year. Mike

I referred to El Diablo as a hamster because he IS a hamster. An adorable, yet brilliant hamster! But anyway, I agree with you that Oingo Boingo is/was great. The energy they put into their albums is just frantic! (Like the song "Nasty Habits") For a long time Only A Lad was my favorite LP, and it still rates pretty high. I think what I like most about it is the technical sounding arrangements, you know, the composition. Speaking of composing, I have a composer friend for whom I played Knights in Shining Karma. I asked him to write down the chord progression so I could try to play it on my guitar ( I'm terrible). It took him about 30 minutes, and all along he was remarking at the choice of chords and note progression. Yet, after all of that work, he STILL remained aloof, and refrained from praising the work! What evil lurkes in the mind of men when the light of truth strikes them square in the face and all they comment on is the dust dancing in the beam?? (I don't know what that means either....)

Regarding possible XTC covering other's songs, I could really see them doing a whole Kinks tribute album, especially "Soap Opera" and "Village Green" material. Lastly, my CD player died yesterday after 14 apartments and 6 years of flawless service. 5 disc "single tray" mechanism has spun its last CD (Homespun).
