In the days before MTV and mp3s, tuning in to Peel's program was a not-to-be missed ritual that continually exposed the listener to the cuttingest edge of music. It was during this time (circa 1980), that the performances by XTC that make up half of "Transistor Blast" (released in 1998) were recorded. Also released in 1998, was an incredible album by Be Bop Deluxe called "Tramcar to Tomorrow." Recorded in multiple sessions throughout the early to mid-Seventies on Peel's show, these Be Bop Deluxe's performances were dreams-come-true for the band's leader, Bill Nelson, who was then a teenager. To provide a context for John Peel and the importance of his radio show, here are some snippets from Nelson's essay for "Tramcar to Tomorrow." I don't think it's too much of a stretch to extrapolate that the feelings Nelson wrote about playing on Peel's show might have been very much the same as Andy, Colin, and the rest of XTC when they played on Peel's show a few years later. + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + Here's what Bill Nelson had to say about playing for John Peel: [snip] But right now, as he polishes the chrome that reflects his face and the clouds behind his head, he listens to the car radio, its volume turned up just enough to inform the neighbours that he is not as they... The radio has become a fountain of inspiration whose energetic source is the justly fabled John Peel, a man who brings to the nation's youth sonic delights beyond their wildest imaginings. [snip] The radio shows that John Peel presented were, for me, like religious revelations... Sunday epiphanies from the transistorized church of noise. Here in the late nineties, with all its multiplicity of choice, it's easy to forget how truly alternative those early programmes were. (And broadcast from beneath the dusty skirt of stuffy old Aunty BBC to boot!) How many thousands of Britains teen's found their lives transformed by tuning in to Peel's shows? How many young guitarists jumped ship and struck out for the fuzz-soaked shores of psychedelia? It was as if the gates had been thrown wide open to a wonderland of infinite possibilities. Sometime later, I was able to record [snip] my first ever collection of self composed songs [snip] created with the use of a simple two track tape machine. Then the magic happened... John Peel played the whole album on his radio show and, as a result, brought my work to the attention of EMI Records [snip]. First, we made an independently released single, "Teenage Archangel," which, once again, John Peel played frequently on his programme. Secondly, John asked us to record a session for his show. I recall being both thrilled and terrified by the prospect. I was actually more nervous about meeting the legendary Peel than doing the programme. + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + As I live in Austin, Texas, I have never heard John Peel-- although I've heard Andy do a delightful impersonation of him on the first track of "Transistor Blast." I can only imagine what it must have been like to listen to each Peel show and have my mind blasted out through my ears and wanting more. In the mid-Eighties, we had our own local version of a John Peel, and while I enjoyed listening to the program, I preferred to go to my favorite record store (Inner Sanctum Records) and flip through the Import bin looking for interesting covers that foretold of great listening adventures within each record sleeve. That strategy worked well for a few years, then the covers began to lie and I needed a new strategy. How I wish I had had access to John Peel's show to help spirit me along. It seems someone has dumped their entire XTC vinyl collection on one second-hand record/CD shop - I picked up the Psonic Psunspot LP (amongst other XTC stuff) because you chalksters reckoned it was worth having. The verdict: definitely a great purchase, I can't stop playing it, I'd recommend anyone who hasn't heard it to buy it or listen to a copy of someone else's. These guys sound amazing...I heard they are selling cd's like crazy at Not Lame... What's their deal???? After a couple of stellar compilation contributions, the one-man-band Minster Hill unleashes their (uh, his) full-length debut. Exceeding this reviewer's expectations (which were pretty high, really), I find this CD to be nothing but entertaining, heart-warming, evocative, and one of the finest of it's kind this year. What "kind" is that? Minster Hill favours full and lush arrangements, often venturing into the exotic - the most apparent cross-reference here would be the likes of XTC (with a little bit of Jellyfish thrown in). Songs like the beautifully paced opener I've Been In A World Today (This Time), the Celtic-tinged Unconscious Kitchen, and the ultra-smooth Limelight Vivian paint vivid portraits indeed. Minster Hill clearly is not interested in playing by any rules. Anything goes - and it all works wonderfully. The Eastern feel of That's Fine By Me makes for a lovely and exotic number while the disjointed rhythm on the chorus of My Dear makes the ballad all the more interesting and enjoyable. These tasteful touches abound on Minster Hill - again, all to great effect. Minster Hill lets the songs and arrangements do the bulk of the talking and lets them take on a life of their own - rather than turn this into a "look what I can do" exercise. I heard it too...quite some time ago at a Chili's restaurant and asked the bartender about it and he basically said that "the in-house muzak is purchased through some company that sells pre-recorded tunes to us....". So I guess that is why we hear it all over the country/world...XTC is PRODUCT. Yikes..I guess this is good though...in a way.... Date: Thu, 30 Sep 1999 11:58:55 EDT I got the book on Friday, and spent most of the weekend listening to the albums and reading the book. Its an amazing book! I suggest if you like the music, get the book. Though the songs are pretty much self explanatory, the book brings you in the studio with them, as they recorded it! Little things through out the book just kept popping up, like Erica Wexler. Maybe its just me, but I was in suspense the whole time as if this was some sort of fictional book. Sitting there wondering who was this Erica... Anyway, the book is great. I am sure I will read it again. What really sucks to me, as probably does to most of you, is the fact that they got screwed for so long and the only album I had from them to listen to is Nonsuch. I have to get AV. I still dont have that! I just got through remastering all the albums and making my own XTC greatest hits (with all there songs!). Problem I have with Virgin is that they rereleased everything with the b-sides, whcih is cool, however, I expected, since it was the 90's and all, for them to pay an engineer to remaster the songs and such. Everything sounded like crap! All the CD's are about 50% volume of standard current audio secifications. Luckily I have a mastering studio! It was quite fun though. When mastering, you get a closer look at the music, and get to bring out the songs power. Even white music sounds like something recorded this year because of my mastering! Gang,
Last digest, davidoh named Manu Katche as one of his favorite drummers. I
must agree...all of his work (that I've heard) is unbelievably good. Check
out the high-hat work on Tears For Fears' "Badman's Song," for example...And
the bits of PG's "Us" album, on which (I believe) he played most of the
drums. Yikes!
Good news: I have a radio show ("Pop! Goes the Ben") on Bowdoin's station
(WBOR), and I featured XTC during last week's show. Although I couldn't
play only XTC for an hour and a half, I did manage to play "This is Pop,"
"Yacht Dance," "Tissue Tigers," "My Bird Performs," "Easter Theatre," Peter
Fitzpatrick and Freedy Johnston's versions of "Earn Enough for Us," and
Jason Garcia's "Dame Fortune." Also, on the recommendation of various
C'hillers, I played World Party's "Hollywood" (what a great song!), GBV's
"Wormhole" (from "Do the Collapse"), and Julian Cope's "The Greatest &
Perfection is Love." I'm still searching for poppy titles, so e-mail away!
Also -- and this deserves a separate paragraph -- WBOR is cool enough to
have all of the Mommyheads albums at the station. "Sandman" is, perhaps,
one of the best pop songs I have ever experienced. Are we *sure* these
albums aren't readily available? Nonetheless, I'm going to try to pop them
onto MiniDisc, so I can enjoy them again and again.

Shriekback made that record for all the wrong reasons, and the remaining band split up (the first time around) shortly afterwards. Incidently, Dave was thrown out because he wanted to go for a rockier sound - given that he then formed King Swamp who fared little better, it's debateable who was more wrong... I remember talking to Barry after a London gig in 1995, when I asked him whether the whole album was about the band splitting up. My theory for this was partly based on the rap in the "Get Down Tonight" cover, but no, this wasn't quite true. The song "Go Bang!" _was_ about the band splitting up (which it was on the verge of doing when the song was written, obviously), but the album as a whole wasn't. It could be significant that they picked that as the title track though, I suppose. If you listen to the album in this context it makes a bit more sense, though that doesn't really excuse a poor album. Incidently, the "Get Down Tonight" rap, although admittedly pretty bad, does contain a few Shriekback-running-jokes which are quite fun. "Everybody's spine is the bassline" springs to mind (a reference to their early single "My spine is the bassline", for the uninitiated). The conclusion which can be drawn from the above is that "Go Bang!" is probably best avoided unless you're already a fan of Shriekback. To the uninitiated it could put you off for a very long time. Having said all that, "Over The Wire" is a great song, it's just a pity the rest of the album doesn't match up to it. What's the prob?
Well,
1. River: It has all the string and horn parts,(synth)
it sounds more like take 1,which was rejected
because take 3 was the good one.
This is basically the prob. with the whole CD. I
would have preferred 'alternative' or 'unplugged'
versions. Collin's songs are the most different but,
the 'real' versions are much better.
The real question is, after a hard day at work,and
I want to listen to XTC. Will I listen to this.or AV.1?
AV.1 is the answer.

The major problem in her running order seems to be the insertion of the Big
Express songs out of order, but then other songs are switched, too. Again,
has anyone else encountered this? In other words, what Denise wants to know
is, is this an incredibly rare (and thus valuable) mistake? :^)
And in other Chalkhills news, tomorrow (Oct. 4) is the birthday of our own
metal-loving gadfly, Dominic Lawson. He's 82, I think (though he doesn't
look a day over 79).
