I gather that the majority on this list would rank ENGLISH SETTLEMENT
as #1, with SKYLARKING a close second.>>

And so I suppose that makes a logical entry to introduce onesself. I just
joined up with Chalkhills a week ago and have been lurking waiting for the
chance to jump in. But as far as my admiration for XTC goes, that goes back
to '79-'80, whenever it was that I heard "Black Sea" on WQDR in Raleigh NC
on their "all night albums" feature (sandwiched in between a Pat Benatar
and an Al Stewart as I recall) Anyway, from the guitar hook of Respectable
Street, I've been hooked! And actually, whether it's a "first love" thing
or not, I would still rank that one as my overall fave, with the
aforementioned ES & Skylarking right behind, but ranking these kind of
things is very difficult for me...I have them all and enjoy them all!

As for AV1, it remains at the top of my Best of '99 list, along with Beth
Orton, Tom Waits, Ben Folds Five. I am especially fond of MY copy of AV1 as
it has Mr. Partridge's autograph on it in gold ink yet! (He signed it at a
Borders in Chicago).

As far as personal info goes, I'm 41 and live in Greenville, SC at present.
I'm also a big fan of Elvis Costello, Joni Mitchell, Bruce Springsteen, and
scads of others.

Looking forward to being a part of this group!

Subject: upcoming releases, av1, etc.

Mitch, anyone, any AV2 news from the front? Are they at least making
progress?

Anyway, a few new release items:

Sept. 7 - New release from Blinker the Star. In CMJ, the leader of the
group says his goal is to get his own music back in line with his days as
an "XTC fanatic," like when he was 14 and was blown away by the sheer
awesomeness of Skylarking. He thinks on this album he's getting
closer. I'll likely be picking that one up, though I've never heard
anything from them, based on his lofty praise of our boys which I merely
paraphrased and condensed here...

Sept. 28 - Two releases this day: 1) Matthew Sweet's new one, reunited with
his "Girlfriend" band for the first time since that great album; and 2) New
Sting, entitled "Brand New Day." I've been listening to the man lately, and
I gotta say, the guy is reeeeally good in my book.

Secondly, on the "how's AV1 holding up?" thread, my two cents are that it
is indeed one of their best, if not maybe their best (though I don't own
White Music or Go2, so maybe I'm speaking too soon!). I listen to it at
least a few times a week, though I still use the different listening order
I sifted out a few months ago:

11, 10, 7, 6, 8, 5, 1, 2, 3, 4, 9

AV1 is EASILY my leading contender for album of the year, and may be in the
pole position for album of the decade. Suffice to say, it's holding up very
nicely. Is it my favorite XTC album? Whew, that's a toughie -- then you
have to try to compare it to Black Sea, English Settlement, Oranges &
Lemons, Nonsuch, Mummer (heck, why not just mention all of them?), but I
must say it holds a position right at the top -- it's a darn fine piece o
work. It may be the best, I'm leaning toward that -- man, it's freekin'
awesome, I just get giddy thinking about how great it is. "Your Dictionary"
may be the most exquisitely arranged piece of pop music in the decade,
unless that award goes to one of the other tracks on this album. Awesome,
excellent stuff, I love every bit of it.

Ahh, that felt nice. Thanks for the opportunity.

Subject: Andy would want you to see The Iron Giant

Hello, everyone....

For all of you out there who are sick of paying for
the crap Hollywood has been dealing as of late--then,
go see Iron Giant (while you still can).

The Iron Giant is the really great new film by
WB...and, even though it has incredible art &
animation, NO stupid songs/sidekicks, has a great
message for both kids and adults, AND rave reviews
(possible Best Picture nomination)....the film is
DYING in the box office....for some reason, people
just don't seem to know about it!

Does this sound familiar to you? great art--hailed by
critics and ignored by the masses? An all too familiar
story around here, huh?

I am very sorry for taking up space for a non-XTC
topic....I have never done this before, and would
never have done it had it not been for such a good
cause, I swear.

I really think Andy & Colin would approve--the movie
is right up their alley: cool soldier stuff with an
anti-violence message! And, remember how Disney tried
to screw Andy over with the whole James and the Giant
Peach thing? Now is our chance for revenge--so,
support non-Disney animation!

Besides, my best friend (a HUGE XTC fan) worked on it!

The Iron Giant is a terrific film. You don't even have
to be an animation fan to enjoy it. It is not like any
other animated movie before--it is more like a live
action film that happens to be animated...(and
animated well).

Please go see it, and, then tell everyone you know how
great it was! (and continue to do the same for XTC!)

thanks,
Kate (the Baltimore one)

Okay, let's not talk about Nirvana and the other stuff anymore, I'm
finding it boring and repetetive. So why not start something that's XTC
related.
What if Weird Al did a parady of an XTC song? What song would be good
paradied (sp), would Andy or Colin give persmission for him to use it?
Hmm, River of Oragamie (sp) (River of Orchids) or Treeman (Greenman).
That would be funny. :)

I have to agree with Chris Chapman, there has been way too much non-XTC
content on this list. I'm not trying to play net police nor am I trying
to step on sweet John Relph's toes, but this stuff is getting repetetive
and boring. I've had to hit the scroll bar numerous times. Is it
because there's nothing going on with the XTC camp? I'm just getting
sick of Nirvana, Brit vs. American, progressive music stuff. More XTC
stuff.

Hello Chalkfolks!

I love XTC. They are my favorite band in the universe and they always
will be. Dave Gregory is in the highest pantheon of guitar gods. I
still miss him quite a bit, and I wish he was still in the band. But
good luck to him in his future endeavors and rock on, tommy!

So often I read that "N" is heralded as a catalyst in the most recent
musical paradigm shift. But, it is not the case that there were only lame
heavy metal or glam metal bands, R&B, or vacuous pop bands to listen to
before Nirvana. A recent VH1 special contained an interview with the lead
guy from Loverboy who lamented over Nirvana's dousing their creative and
lucrative flame. What a load!
There's always the blues!
Bands like The Reverend Horton Heat and other progressively speedy
guitar-blues groups sounded great during the "Nirvana shift". And don't
forget The Greatful Dead. I'm not embarrassed to admit that I was just in
time to catch a few last shows. And from there you could jump to
Phish. Sure, Phish is drenched in a psychadelic groove a lot of the time,
but you'd be hard pressed to deny their musicianship and composition
abilities.
I would pay good money to see Phish cover Knights In Shining Karma!

Subject: blown away + GEORGE!

A few more thoughts this Wednesday Morn,

1) I am feeling absolutely great this morning, and I've been blaring XTC
from my car and desk all morning. I am in awe of Andy and Colin,
particularly struck by Andy's lyrical power, as "Summer's Cauldron" is
perfectly reflective of my state of mind today; which leads me to:

2) The one thing I left off the new music bulletin. News from the George
Harrison camp: George has completed a brand new solo album, more
guitar-based than anything -- excellent. Secondly, Harrison has purchased
the rights to all his old solo material AND the Wilburys material, and is
re-releasing both catalogs with six to eight demos, b-sides, etc. PER ALBUM
-- and that includes the Wilburys stuff. Could be some great unreleased
material from those sessions.

3) Andy and Colin rule, if I didn't mention it already. I have a broad
musical range and love all kinds of stuff, and album for album, song for
song, XTC are in my book the best band in the world today -- I like their
catalog more than anyone else's right now, even the Beatles. Heck, I may
even have to go pick up White Music and Go2!

Just wanted to add those items, Have a great one. Will J

Of course, I agree with this, and let me add that the lead track, "Teenage
FBI," is easily the best song of the year (yes, sorry, even better than
anything off of AV1), and maybe the best quintessential powerpop song in
many years. It is flawless in every way. I listen to it over and over. If

Iain, you're mistaken bigtime, pal, on probably
being the only interested in this classic album
by PB!! I've got a CD copy of it myself and
even have the limited edition KS promo entitled
"Peter Who?" featuring Andy Partridge as "the
interviewer" to Blegvad throughout. This album
is indeed FANTASTIC!!! Andy's involvement through-
out is a bonafide HOOT!!

Thanks for mentioning the Blegvad name! This man
is as much of a songwriting genius as AP himself,
so there's really no surprise that Partridge wanted
to work with him. Blegvad also has another album
out called "The Naked Shakespeare" that has Partridge
and Moulding all over it! Partridge even produced most
of it!

Check 'em out, people! Blegvad really is worth the
hunt, believe me!!! :-D

Oh, for crying out loud.

I joined this thing hoping for informative facts about XTC and their music.
So why is it clogged with endless opinions and bantering about other bands

Interesting post about punk and musicianship as two paths to XTC.

My path was coming home from the White Castle. My friend Dan had "Living
through another Cuba" on the car stereo. My mind was blown. The next
day or so, English Settlement came out.

Did anyone else get there via/simultaneously with Comsat Angels? Does/did
anyone follow the Comsats? I would be very interested in picking up
materials on their obscure reincarnations, etc., after the name change.

Oh, and to make up for previous lack of XTC content:

Que pasa, Chalkers!!

---Just wanted to let you all know I am continuing to do the Lord's
work...helping misguided souls to find redemption through XTC, one set of
ears at a time.....these particular ears belong to my hubby...I've been
trying to sell him on XTC for over a year...it was always the same...every
time he'd hear me playing their music he'd say something like, "what's
this?"... then I would launch into a lengthy discourse, extolling the
virtues of these talented lads...to which my dearest would reply, "oh". ---I
realized I'd have to take a different approach if I was to help my baby see
the light. The conversion finally took place last week while we were on
vacation. I made tapes of AV1, Skylarking and Oranges and Lemons. As we
cruised the Southwestern U.S., the music of XTC flowed out of the car
speakers...the perfect companion to the lonesome beauty of the desert
landscape. AV1 was the one that made the sale...my husband kept saying,
"WHO is this?", and as the tracks played on he said, "this is all from ONE
band?.. on ONE album?" I couldn't keep from grinning like a bufoon while
my husband raved on about how great XTC was/were/are...It only took 4
states, 9 days and almost 3,000 miles, but I did it..rather, the genius of
AP & company did...
---In response to David Seddon's post in digest #5-#246:
Was Cobain/Nirvana a significant influence on pop music? The subject is
still debatable. What troubled me was your apparent animosity towards us

lack of fiber in your diet. My specific gripe? Your broad generalizations
about Americans, which seemed to have been based purely on supposition. I
would think an otherwise thoughtful person(in this instance, you David),
would avoid making such ignorant statements.....o.k., o.k., I feel a little
better.....sorry to rant, Chalkfolks......

I'm actually starting to forget what a "typical" teenager is... of course,
the age bar kept getting lowered even as I was only in my late teens

This is just funny to me, because I remember Andy Partridge talking about
this phenomenon back in an interview around the time of O&L (hm, may have
even been on the radio tour). However, his view seemed to be different. I
remember him saying that American audiences were so massive, that releasing
a song here was like dropping a pebble into a lake-- the ripples took a long
time to reach the fringes (ie, everyone), but it kept going and didn't stop.
Britain, on the other hand, he said was like dropping a pebble into a
saucer of water-- it had a powerful effect, but the ripples went out and
back quickly and then it was gone. He saw Britain as having a lot more
one-hit wonders. Does anyone else remember this?

Subject: SEC : UNCLASSIFIED Another F#@*ing Survey?

(Again, sorry about the SEC : UNCLASSIFIED bit, but I wanted to make sure
this got out of the building......)

Before anybody else jumps in with another survey along similar lines
(assuming they haven't by the time this gets posted), I'd like to propose a
survey based on what list members believe are the five best albums of the
decade. Judging by the raging debate about the most influential bands of
the decade, undertaking a survey like this is probably a bit foolhardy, but
I'm game. E-Mail your responses directly to me at the above address, and
after a couple of weeks (or when I think I've got a representative sample)
I'll post the results.

Thanks!

Iain

Subject: SEC : UNCLASSIFIED Please Explain......

Okay, maybe I should have explained the survey idea a bit more fully. Here
goes :

1. Send me the names of what you think are the five best albums of the
1990s *in order of preference*.

2. Points will be awarded to these albums in correspondence with their
position in the order (for example, if someone votes an album as #1, it
gets five points. A #5 album gets one point).

3. At the end of two weeks (or thereabouts), I will post the results on the
list. This will only be the top five albums - anyone who wants a more
comprehensive list (to see where their favourite album finished) can get in
touch with me, and I'll send them a complete listing of all albums voted
for.

Clear as mud? Cool.

A short message, Jill Oleson's last message about the smoke reminded me
that until I bought the "Easter Theatre" Single I thought the line read "If
we'd all breathe in and blow away the snow" which to me created a wonderful
image of blowing away the last remains of winter to welcome in Easter and
Spring. So I'm afraid I was very disappointed when I found out that the
word was in fact smoke. That lovely poetic image, or at least was to me,
lost an awful lot at that time.
Thank you for your attention
