What I wanna know is: Do you want to see XTC videos online? The current technology allows for a very primitive (ie: sucky) overall presentation, but it's still possible. I tried encoding a live rendition of "Snowman" using Real Encoder and tried on every possible bandwidth option to get the video to come out even remotely lifelike and it just couldn't happen. What COULD happen though, is a sort of stained-glass effect or video that looks like a long expressionistic painting that sort of jerks around in time with nothing in particular. But if anyone is interested in seeing such a thing, I'm perfectly willing to do the encoding! Please respond to ian@autoreverse.net: wanna see XTC video online even though the quality blows? The ties with Aimee Mann don't just end with Dave Gregory having been her on-stage guitarist and off-stage companion a few years back. I just read Jonathan Van Meeter's story on Aimee Mann in the Sunday NYTimes Magazine (July 11), and in so many passages I could have swapped Mann with Partridge. The article presents the larger picture around the old familiar singer-songwriter recording artist vs. record exec struggle. In the end, Aimee Mann closed the book on the big label for good (Interscope, formerly Geffen, coincidentally) and is striking out on her own, hiring lawyers to buy back her master recordings from the record company, starting her own label (cuz she'd make more money from 70,000 of her own sales than 300,000 of theirs), and partnering with Liquid Audio to reach directly music fans "online" like you and I. The latter is where xtc's own independent venture may hang in balance, as I'm wondering how much Idea Records is taking advantage of this increasingly crucial medium. I hope Andy's easy and rather aloof dismissal of his Internet audience does not translate into another missed opportunity in xtc's tortured career. I am hoping (probably foolishly) that in his best efforts to see Idea become a success, AP may put aside some of his long-standing qualms and caveats and PROMOTE. Not necessarily tour, but a controlled live performance or two after AV2 is released may go a long way not just for album sales but for his label as a whole. I know, I know, Andy's aversion to performing is much much more than a mere qualm, but could a fear of his company's failure surpass a fear of the stage and microphone? Did he not survive (and actually enjoy, to some degree) the Acoustic Radio Tour? This is not a completely selfless wish, of course, but it does remain: after the art, selling records IS a business no matter how you slice it, and I'm curious what Andy and Colin are doing these days to feed their business, and themselves. That title belongs to those who still don't realize the by-now obvious truth: hip-hop has decisively supplanted "rock" as the pop music of the Now and of the foreseeable future. Hip-hop, along with its various substyles and offshoots, is by far THE music of choice of rebellious teenagers as well as the rest of the core popular-music-consuming public. It is also maturing into a true artists' medium (Lauryn Hill is NOT just hype -- listen to her record, Chalkhillers, and be expanded!). But so what? We are now so far into the age of technologically-assisted data-access and niche-marketing that it doesn't matter that white-guys-with-electric-guitars are marginalized as a mass-media format. Andy and Colin can cook this stuff up in their sheds and enough of us will adore it, buy it and make it worth their while to continue. Rock has had its day -- an artificially extended day at that, thanks to the huge size and clout of the baby-boomer population segment. There is still room for artistic exploration within the form, but let's all stop waiting for the next Elvis/Beatles/Dylan/Sex Pistols to "save" the idiom. We are in the late twilight of rock as a significant cultural force, but that doesn't mean we can't enjoy the pretty sunset and then go sit around the bright campfire of our choice. Ouch. Why would I want to buy a single of a song that I already have, just for the cover art? I don't think so. And most imports do cost too much for me, but this doesn't mean I'm a lesser XTC fan. I still love the band just as much as the next person on this list. Also, I think I've converted my brother to XTC. He wants me to bring home AV1 to listen to. I can't believe it. My brother has really great tastes in music. He got me into Styx, Queen and a lot of the classic rock bands of the 70s. Molly

Honestly, though, know how you feel. Ten years ago (omigod, you were 3, I'm so old) I was the only 12 year old XTC fan in the world. I got into them when they appeared on Letterman and then the following week when Partridge hosted the now-defunct "Postmodern MTV". I was hooked. I didn't realize how few people seemed to know who they were at first, because, coincidentally enough, my best friend at the time's 14 year old brother got into XTC at just the same time. So that was good-- it made up for the fact that my best friend had started listening to New Kids on the Block. Then I moved out to Denver from Atlanta, didn't find any more XTC fans, was a lonely and miserable goth listening to XTC and the Smiths and the Cure and moping all over while wearing all black and having now friends. Oh, yeah, and I was fat. So I hated my peers. Junior high sucked. But when I was 13, I started taking the Little Express, the XTC newsletter. When I was 14, I ran an ad for penfriends. I got a lot of penfriends. Yeah, they ranged in age from 17 to 32, and they were all male, but it was great (an only child, I suddenly felt like I had five older brothers). I made friendships that lasted for a long time (including one guy I'm still friends with after eight years). I got exposed to new music and lots of XTC rarities, meaning I got some great tapes! So, my route was to forget about my peers until they caught up with me and just have older friends. Of course, that's me, and I've never been the most social duck in the pond. What was I saying? Okay, my mind's going. Anyway, Ian Stewart mentioned-- >RIP Mark Sandman thank you for saying that-- I was getting really ashamed of this list when I was reading through several days' worth and saw nothing. "Cure for Pain" is one of the most amazing albums I've ever heard-- when I got it I listened to nothing else for weeks. I was really broken up about his death, and he will definitely be missed. Coincidentally enough, for those of you following along, Ian Stewart was one of those kind penfriends I had when I was 14, who I ran into once I got on this list. It's a small world after all! I distinctly remember hearing that Andy & Colin had taped an appearance on
"Space Ghost Coast-To-Coast". Anybody else heard that? And if so, when will
it air?
As for my favorite XTC cd's.....hmm.....tough one. I love 'em all from
"Drums & Wires" on..... my three favorites must be (in alphabetical order):
"Apple Venus V.1" ("Frivilous Tonight" is awesome), "Oranges & Lemons" and
"Skylarking". Maybe I should throw "Black Sea" & "Nonsuch" in there, too!
Ah, hell! So many great ones.
I hope I don't sound like I'm being unobjective when I say that XTC
combines the spirit of great bands like the Beatles, Beach Boys and Kinks-
yet what comes out is completely unique. I always get irritated when a new
band pops up and the press declares them as the "next big thing" or the
"new Beatles" (see: Oasis....sorry...they are mediocre at
best!). Meanwhile, XTC SHOULD have been getting much more credit from the
press than they have. I must say that I am quite gratified to read all of
the glowing reviews for "Apple Venus". It has to be considered one of the
great 90's CD's. If it doesn't make critic's year-end top 10 lists, well,
what would they put ahead of it?

I was impressed not only by the distorted sounds symbolising (to me) rain sputtering out of a dirty gutter in a sort of winter wasteland, but also impressed by how ahead of it's time this 'outtro' (reverse of intro?) was. Think about it......when you listen to 'Black Sea'....doesn't the music and the production sound like it was just recorded yesterday? I'm always startled at how fresh this album is. This sounds fishy to me. I read recently that GBV was all signed up to do a big ol' tour with Cheap Trick, not XTC. And don't we all know Andy well enough by now to realize that this probably is NOT EVER going to happen? If the surviving Beatles actually do get together and do this rumored Yellow Submarine promotion, only then will I consider that maybe Andy too could be talked into performing live. Until then, enjoy GBV (that's Guided by Voices, BTW). Their new album, set for release Aug. 3, and with a real producer this time (Ric Ocasek), should be a beautiful thing. Bob O'Bannon
