Long time, no post, so a few boring little things to get off my chest...
1. Robert D'Aprile (?) wrote e few digests ago that the latest Damned
tour is brilliant and you know what? He's jolly well right! I saw them a
couple of times in the eighties with silly Roman Jugg on guitar and, at the
time thought it was brill but nothing prepared me for the ''side of a barn''
sized crunching wall of guitar that the Captain delivered. Kind of like a
'teenage dream' so to speak albeit arriving late in my thirties.
2. Congratulations to Paul Culnane for the interview with Terry
Chambers however I must take issue with Terry about the need for another
show like Countdown and a compare like Molly Meldrum to break new acts in
this country. This twit (Molly, not Terry) did more damage to the Australian
music scene than any other industry idiot I can name. He's the principle
reason why we got The Angels (crap pub band) instead of Radio Birdman (cult
Stooges, MC5 legends), Cold Chisel (crap pub band) instead of The Riptides
or The Gobetweens (Alternative pop legends) and Pseudo Echo (crap new
Romantic band) instead of MEO245 (exciting 80s pop band like Fischer Z
except much, much better) to name a few. What's he done for the music scene
lately? Signed Peter 'oh what a lovely washboard stomach I've got' Andre on
the strength of a freakin' talent quest appearance!!! Criiiinge! Whaddaya
say Paul and Iain, am I right or am I right?
3. Years ago on 4ZZZ radio station they used to have a station
identification blipvert with Andy saying, "My name's Andy Partridge and I
play in a band that goes under the name of XTC and if you don't hear my
voice coming out of your speaker right now you're possibly tuned to the
wrong station."
4. Boy, Dom really cops a beating in this digest. I mean, I hate rap
music but I admire the guy's suicidal forthrightness(?) - I'd rather read
his declarations of intent than Harrison 'oh what a big vocabulary I've got'
Sherwood's postings. Nothing against Mister Sherwood, mind.
5. Phil Collins? Barely enough rhythm to masturbate - but he does it
sooooo well.
6. Loved the analysis of Helicopter. Just another brilliant track from
a brilliant album. Glad to hear your swinging your knockers around to it.
Can we watch? Sorry if that sounds a little lecherous but sometimes you've
got to be obscene to be obheard I'm sure you'll agree!

If they were a standard band playing small concert halls like 2500 to 5000 seats you would expect to pay about $30 to $40 a seat right, taking a date or spouse =$80 plus a couple of t-shirts, soda, nachos, or whatever=real close to a $100. This would be per year since you are a huge fan which means in 10 years you could easily spend $1000. I hate to say this: They are not going to tour ever again in my lifetime. I screwed up and missed whatever chance I ever had to see them live, mostly by being too stupid and not recognizing their brilliance earlier. I hope I am wrong but I do not think so. I think the best we can hope for is a filmed session with them or maybe another radio tour kind of deal. Andy is just not interested and from what I have read recently Colin isn't real keen on the idea anymore either. They like their lives the way they are. So I ask you, Is $300 too much to pay for something that no more than 199 people before you have ever done? Sit down at home and unwrap a brand new sealed copy of windowbox and spend a few hours listening to the brilliance of these guys in raw form. Sure I've got everything on the tape, that is not the point, the point is the experience. It is not often anymore that I get the chance to have an XTC experince and I would gladly pay $300 to do it. Here's hoping the new material is wonderful as I am sure it is. The sound of a large soapbox being put away is now heard, followed by Jon crawling back under his rock. Here's my 2 cents in the Great O&L Debate:
1. There's no such thing as a bad or sub-standard XTC album.
2. We all need that new album pretty badly, don't we?
BTW: Harrison's excellent piece on That Wave was interesting,
eloquent and offered yet another level of meaning to an already
magnificent work of art. And Catherine's personal observations on
Helicopter left me "bouncing with gay abandon".
Both pieces were a joy to read and much more interesting than the
rather childish "my fave album is better than yours" debate that has
been raging. It's so pointless... everybody knows E.S. is the best :)

such, just as the slightly slurred (delayed?) vocal effects,
precisely because this song deals with the impossibilities of

I love every XTC-album. When O & L was released I took vacation for two days from my work just to listen. It was worth it. I must honestly say that I don't understand how any person can dislike it. I don't know why, It just sounds more like something DEVO would have done better at a faster tempo. On my old cassette, I erased the song. when I listen to the cd, I program it not to play that track.

My apologies if these points have been raised before (I was a bit slow, so
Cheryl beat me to the punch on a few of them - I just can't get used to
Chalkhills becoming a daily again....).
Firstly, I must reply to Andy Miller's comments in Chalkhills #5-21,
regarding the gap between the first five albums and everything that came
after. Hmm......this is just my own opinion, but I've never perceived a
"gap" ; it's always seemed more a progressive maturing of both the writing
and the musicianship. By the time O&L was released, I think the group had
gained the confidence to try a few new ideas (as far as production was
concerned) in the studio ; herein lies at least one benefit of the
cessation of touring.
I suppose it could be argued (and I can feel the flames heading in my
direction already) that XTC had pretty much ceased to have any Top 40
relevance by this point - or, to put a Spinal Tap spin on it, "their appeal
was becoming more selective" - and perhaps the "over-production" (there's
that word again) on O&L was a tad self-indulgent. Personally, I think they
were well within their rights to record a few albums that *they* might
enjoy, rather than attempting to pander to the whims of some imaginary
13-year-old invented by record companies......I'm starting to ramble a bit
here ; what the hell was my point again?
Okay, I remember now - commercial success is not the be-all and
end-all of playing in a band. It's nice when it happens, of course, but
shouldn't the #1 priority be enjoyment of what you do, rather than chasing
the almighty dollarpound? As for over-production, perhaps brought about by
having too much time on their hands in the studio.....I haven't heard
anyone refer to "Sgt.Pepper's" as over-produced, and yet (IMO, anyway), the
circumstances in which both albums were recorded were quite similar - more
time for studio experimentation as a result of the retirement from touring.
Mind you, Andy, you were right about The Big Express - it's about time
people started building this album up. As for Skylarking being "a neutered
dog of an album ; Andy sounds scared to sing" - sorry, I disgaree most
vehemently, sir. "Earn Enough For Us" is one of the most upbeat and
optimistic songs I've heard in years, and "Another Satellite" would be
capable of moving me to tears if I was a big girlie.....that's probably not
very PC, but who cares? I'm on a roll.
Closer to the present, Michael Davies mentioned a whole bunch of songs
he doesn't like (and why shouldn't he? It's a free mailing list). I have to
agree with his comments about English Settlement - although "Jason & The
Argonauts" is beginning to win me over, "Runaways" and "Ball And Chain"
have a looooooong way to go. I feel the same way about almost the entire
Black Sea album, but I think it might be best to let that go before the O&L
debate becomes the BS debate....and I'm sure you'll agree that quite full
enough of BS already. I couldn't really say that "Big Day" depresses me,
but it does bore the crap out of me ; and pressing the skip button gets you
to "Another Satellite" a little bit quicker, which can't be a bad thing.
I don't like "President Kill Again" much, by the way.

All this talk about 'best' and 'worst' XTC albums is frankly
getting tired. We all have our own tastes , therefore opinions. It is a
totally pointless exercise to cram Chalkhills full of this stuff as
everyones opinion is vald and nobody has the right to challenge your
opinion by stating their own as superior. Personally I love O&L and
Nonsuch. So what ? If you don't , turn it off. Simple isn't it ?
Over-produced , under- produced. Who cares ? If you like it fine. If you
don't , fine. End of story !! Can we now give it a rest and talk about
something more challenging ?
As for Phil Collins - nobody can argue that the guy is a technically
superb drummer. As for his music being good or bad , READ ABOVE!!!!

The only XTC album included is Oranges & Lemons at number 430, right between Begin by The Millennium and Abba's Greatest Hits. For fans of psychedelic pop, I'd highly recommend Begin.
