Errrrrrrrr,

OF COURSE "CHIPS" SOUNDS DATED!

It's a tribute/takeoff/elbow in the side/send up of the 60's, and should
make the unsuspecting listener think, "Hmmmm, this doesn't sound
familiar-but it should!"
(Meanwhile, it's better than a lot of the chart-toppers of the time, and
definitely gives The Vanilla Fudge a run for its money.)

I don't mean to be rude, but I think you might be asleep at the wheel. If
"Chips" sounds "dated", (and I assume you meant that negatively,) then
you don't "get" the Dukes, and if you don't get the Dukes, how can you
really "get" XTC?

Just asking-

Liz

"I like SOME of the old stuff, just not as much of it."

This sort of describes me, however...
After reading all the "best" and "worst" xtc song opinions.
I went back and played all my xtc CD's/vinyl again, focusing on the
songs that were less favoured, and guess what?
They grow on you. As you listen carefully (headphones recommended),
you realize how much you missed the first few times around.
Randy Hiatt pointed this out to me when I first came onboard.
 He was right.

so I'm in the library looking for The Story of English. I find
it ,when what to my wondering eyes should appear next to it , -ORIGINS-A
short etymological dictionary of modern english.By Eric Partridge.Inside
the back cover,he is reffered to as" the word -king."

  Any relation to Andy?
I open the book to look up morgasm. Only thing close is
morganatic. -"matrimonium ad morganaticam" a morning gift . so,maybe
morgasm is a morning orgasm?

Priapic Nipple? Don't anyone steal my band name? Why not ? Shouldnt
there be two priapic nipples?

I was looking in chalkhills at some lyrics. For "the end" it has "of
kicking ass and runny noses" I hear it as "of itching ass and runny noses"
Either way, another example ao Andy saying ass, instead of arse. Is erica
black?

Hello there--
It's been a while since I've posted, and haven't really been keeping up
with the digests like I should have, but the last few I've read seem to
show that not too much has changed in chalk-land in the last few
months...
well, the main reason I'm posting is because last night at a
little record store called Low Yo Yo here in Athens, GA I picked up a
bootleg video of XTC called "Play at Home." It looks like it's been
dubbed about 13 times, and I paid $15 for it, but it was definitely
worth it! It apparently came out right after Mummer, right before Big
Express, cos the video opens with shots of Swindon and Andy
singing/playing an acoustic version of "Soul Coal." I had never seen
any of the Mummer videos prior to seeing this video, and was very
pleasantly surprised to see that they made videos for over half of the
songs on the album, apparently, b/c on this video are the entire videos
for "Beating of Hearts," "Human Alchemy," "Love on a Farmboy's Wages,"
"In Loving Memory of a Name" (TOO COOL!!! God, I love this song, and
the video's perfect for it), and "Funk Pop a Roll." I know there's a
video for "Wonderland" out there somewhere too, cos I've seen about 10
seconds of it once before when Andy hosted "120 Minutes" about 7 or so
years ago, but it is, unfortunately, not included on "Play at Home."
There is also footage of the famous (now painted over, I hear) mural of
all the famous people in Swindon, and a long interview with Andy, Dave,
and Colin all together, plus individual interviews (Andy playing with
toy soldiers and the games he invented, Colin talking about his main
hobby, fishing, and Dave showing off his guitar collection, plenty of
really nice guitars, I might add). Needless to say, this video has
made me verry happy! :) I could work out some sort of trade with
anyone interested who'd like a dub...
which reminds me, I was going to dub some Bill Hicks for a
fellow on this list, but I failed to get back in touch, b/c he sent me
a trade list as an attachment and in the process of getting it open it
got messed up. So, if you still remember who you are, you can write me
and I'll try to get back on the ball.
Could anyone tell me where I can buy a copy of the "Easter
Theatre" single? Can I buy it online, or should I order it? also,
has there been a single released of "I'd Like That"?
e-mail me privately for trades, etc, cos I hate to admit it,
but, my reading of the posts has been a bit sketchy lately (just
finished spring semester at UGA and am on break between semesters now,
meaning that I can only get to a computer about once a week now and
even then am cramped for time!)
but, I'll try to stay more caught up. Anyone else have the
"Play at Home" video? Anyone have copies of the "Wonderland" video, or
videos from "Skylarking" or any Dukes videos? let me know!

Message-ID: <19990512.143628.2838.0.MollyFa@juno.com>

I know there's already been Testimonial Dinner, but I was thinking about
what would your dream XTC tribute album be? Who would you have on it and
what songs would they sing. You can have whoever you want. From the
reformed ABBA (like that would ever happen) to ZZ Top (hehehe, I would
love to see them do an XTC song). Here are my choices.

1. Generals and Majors - Depeche Mode
2. Grass - Mark Hollis (of Talk Talk)
3. All of You Pretty Girls - Adam Ant
4. Senses Working Overtime - Oasis
5. Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead - Eric Clapton
6. Statue of Liberty - Squeeze
7. Another Satellite - Kate Bush
8. Then She Appears - O'Rang (Paul Webb and Lee Harris of Talk Talk's
band)
9. Jump - Neil Finn
10. Wake Up - Ben Folds Five
11. Dear God - Jewel
12. Mayor of Simpleton - Paul McCartney

So there you go. How do you like my choices. It's very unique. Now
It's your turn, so go ahead and knock yourselves out. =o)

That song is splendid actually. Sounds like the Dukes!
The guitar solo alone is worth the price of admission!

Hello Chalkists,

In Chalkhills #5-204 John Voorhees asks if the nasal bass underpinning
Greenman is a bassoon, and/or contra-bassoon or maybe a crumhorn. You don't
often read such things in the Motorhead discussion group, I daresay. Well
to my ears it's that other great rock'n'roll instrument, the harmonium. Or
at least a sample of one. A person can spend nights worrying over such
things.

different attitude towards Black Sea and whenever I listen to it I
program my CD player to miss out the bonus tracks. Black Sea works
much better as a whole album.

I have to admit that Black Sea has taken a long time to win me over, and
it's still the album I listen to least, but I think the bonus tracks
(especially "Don't Lose Your Temper") are better than some of the
"official" album cuts ("Living Through Another Cuba" leaps to mind). Again,
I started listening to the band on CD, and with the exception of English
Settlement (single-LP version), I've never heard the albums on vinyl.

>>I do agree that the bonus tracks should
have been put on the end of the CDs.

...in the same way as the Elvis Costello releases (which I'm sure has been
mentioned here before, but it's a good point, so I'm nicking it for the
time being).

but I gather that it's not in the running which is a huge shame. Oh

That's one of my favourites, as well (along with "I Don't Want To Be

04. A Town Called Malice - The Jam
05. Tainted Love - Soft Cell
06. Never Say Never - Romeo Void

09. The Look Of Love (Part One) - ABC
10. Love Plus One - Haircut One Hundred
11. Nick The Stripper - Birthday Party
12. Shoot Out The Lights - Richard And Linda Thompson

not remember. I will take Number 3 and 4 above, and that is it!

What about #12? The title track to the album of the decade (in my opinion,
anyway)? But I agree with you that *the rest* of them can be forgotten
easily enough (Romeo Void?). As an aside, "Homosapien" has recently been
covered by some Australian band whose name escapes me for the moment, and
it's getting a shitload of airplay over here - certainly more than the new
XTC stuff (go figure).

To all my friends at Chalkhills....

I will be unsubscribing from Chalkhills in the next couple of days. But
before I do, I'd like to make a couple of comments.

Thanks to John Relph for making this digest a reality. For almost four
years I looked forward to reading it as soon as it hit my inbox. Lately,
though, I find the digest becoming more and more nasty and a lot less witty
and informative.

Over the years, I've made some great contacts through the list. I'd like
to thank you to you all. I hope I don't forget anyone. Please stay in
touch.

Thanks to...

Howdy 'Hillians!

I think it's time to speak my mind and possibly OFFEND the delicate
sensibilites of some denizens of this list. I like GO2; not my fave XTC
album but it (and White Music) have a fairly frequent rotation in my CD
player - more than Non(e)su(v)ch. Now, for the controversy: I actually
LIKE the song "My Weapon". I don't necessarily like the words or the
violent intent, but, to me, it is funny since I don't take it seriously. I
like the beat and the thrashing rhythm, especially when I am in a bad mood
(Red), which is why I like the earlier albums anyway. So, ladies and
gents, please feel free to flame away! Remember to e-mail me privately and
I will summarize the most humorous responses for the group.

Secondly, I find myself doing this every few weeks, but I think it's time
to do it again. THANK YOU to Dom and Dunks, for once again giving us all a
big har-de-har-har.  Dunks, I understood your sarcasm even without the :);
anyone who has subscribed to Chalkhills for more than 2 weeks should have
spotted it a mile away. Dom, you have a true gift with the language (won't
touch the "English" part with a 10-foot pole) and always make me smile even
when I don't agree with you (which I do an astounding percentage of the
time).

That's all for now :-)!!!

Hey Chalkers--

Just got my June Glamour magazine today. You know, it's just not the same
since they changed editors - if I wanted Cosmo, I'd be reading Cosmo. But
anyway, this really is XTC content. Right there on the cover it sez:

"Get Moregasmic! - Shameless Tricks to Double _Your_ Pleasure"

And yes, it's a typical Cosmo-style article on spicing up your sex life.
Still, it's topical, eh?

Subject: CD bonus tracks +

I've noticed a lot of postings on the CD bonus track thingy lately. IMHO I
think Virgin should have put the extra track after a 15 second wait at the
end of the original track listing. In fact, I believe I read this
suggestion here before, but I can't remember who made it.

"No Thugs..." appears in the proper spot on the CD version of ES. However,
on the LP it was at the beginning of side two with "Jason..." ending side
one.

The chairs in "Harvest Festival" are actually Andy & Colin getting up out
of chairs, over dubbed many times. I read some where it was rather
exhausting to do.

Finally, my hero of 20th century is Paul Robeson. How many renaissance men
were there in this century. He did it all: All-American Football player,
Studied law at Columbia, made numerous songs into standards, was a great
actor and so on.

Chalkholes:

One of Australia's better rock journalists, Michael Dwyer, seems to have
had a recent telephone conversation with our Andy, and has placed two items
in Australia's "rock press" about XtC and Apple Venus Volume 1.

A one-page piece in the weekly "Drum Media" (similar to London's "Time
Out") and a major piece in the June Australian edition of "Rolling Stone",
with Andy giving his candid opinions about each of the band's albums.

They are well-written items and obviously valuable publicity for the band
in Australia. I recommend these articles to any Aussie listees - and if
anybody anywhere wants scanned copies, just e-mail me.

The June RS also lists AV1 among its "recommended" albums of the last four
months.

As an aside, I guess a lot of you know that I put a lot of time, money and
effort into interviewing Andy last year. The full interview, along with an
extremely rare chat with Terry Chambers are of course available on Mark
Strijbos' marvellous XtC website The Little Lighthouse at: http/come.to/xtc

[Mark informs me that the AP interview has scored beyond 3000 hits since it
was put online on 11/11/98 - bloody remarkable! - I hope readers enjoyed
 it]

I used the wealth of material contained in that interview to compose items
that I submitted to most of the major newspapers and specific music organs
in this country - all to no avail. Disappointing after a lot of hard work
on my part. I guess I'm just not the "journalist" I sometimes aspire to
be. But I still reckon my interviews with AP and TC are corkers!
Nevertheless, it's great to see our boys getting coverage in Oz.

Watch out here for news about a *possible* XtC special on RAGE (ABC-TV
music vid show in Oz). They *might* play all the XtC videos which would be
wonderful. This special is mooted for the latter half of this year. If it
goes ahead, rest assured that I will make tapes available to anybody who's
interested.

I love XtC and, by association, I love you

Subject: My Nonesuch CD

All that recent debate about the merits of Nonesuch inspired me to dig it
out for the first time since I joined this list, at which point I
remembered that my UK CD edition has an unusual case with the gold detail
of the building overlaid on the jewel case rather than on the front of the
booklet inside.

I bought it in a second-hand shop a few years back and I recall it had some
kind of limited edition sticker on it which I removed. I'm not interested
in selling it (and it's got a small crack on the front anyway) but does
anyone know whether this was a particularly rare version or not?

On the more important question of the music, I'm firmly in the pro-Nonesuch
camp. That, Skylarking and AV1 are my favourite XTC albums. In fact (heresy
of heresies) I don't even like a much of the early stuff apart from some of
the singles.

I am beginning to be sucked into the maelstrom that is this MP3 rage
thingy. I was wondering inf anyone had seen or even posessed any MP3s of
XTC songs that may be hard to come by. I noticed a few days ago that on
the official(?) Captain Beefheart site (www.beefheart.com), there are
hundreds of MP3s of bootleg albums available. Of course, I have not
searched far and wide for XTC stuff yet, as I have every legit release and
some not so legit. I would like to find things such as Jules Verne or
demos if they do exist in MP3 form. Any help out there?
