To me it represents all that is bad about British TV. ...I think that after the success of Monty Python's Flying Circus here, we are conditioned to think that any British comedy show that runs on public television is great stuff. People here love Bean, and Benny Hill, too. Go figure! Go and buy any record (or preferably all of them) from Peter Gabriels Real World label. There you will find music from Finland, China, Most of Africa, The Russian Steppes, Madagascar, Ireland, Morocco, Japan, Azerbaijayn (sp?) etc etc etc. All of them wonderful & weird in varying proportions. ...Unfortunately, most of them are over-produced and over-synthesized, too. Don't get me wrong, Real World has put out some really good records (check out 'The Truth' by the Justin Vali Trio or 'Rama Sreerama' by U. Srinivas), but they have the deserved reputation in world music circles for Americanizing their releases by pumping them full of synths and dance rhythms. Hemisphere and Rounder are both really good world labels, and everything I've heard on coraSON (a latino music label) is excellant, and more traditional than the music found on Real World.

write a cheeky mock-article asserting its influence on Flannery
O'Connor's fiction (and Faulkner's too!).

Believe it or not, there are Donner Party buffs, who have nothing

Dear C'hillers, I'm afraid of listening to AV1 because I might hate it. It doesn't help matters that I got Andy to sign my copy in, of all places, the Virgin Smegma Store in San Francisco. When I asked him what he thought about signing CD's inside the one and only Virgin stop on the itinerary, he replied "I fucking hate it." I just shook my head. Irony of ironies. It was a gas to meet Andy and shake his hand and I blurted out just how loved he and his music and Colin's music are and Dave and Terry were. Since O&L, I've been skipping over selected songs on the Cd's. I can listen to everything up to O&L nonstop. Suddenly, President Kill sends vomit juices squirting up the back of my throat. I'll put on Nonsuch, and Crocodile will do the same. Ditto, Then She Appeared...killing me softly after That Wave, which will always be played with the volume on 11. I frantically paced the room sampling songs from AV1 and decided to put it down for a couple of weeks until I could do something, like go on vacation and digest it in full, several of times - before I could come to a rational conclusion. My expectations are too much. I anxiously await the more electrified AV2. But I'm sad to think that this is the last hurrah for my favorite band. I don't want them to stop. I want Terry and Dave back in the band and I want Black Sea 2. This will never happen. Oh boo-fucking-hoo.

It's called "The Hollow Men," has the seventh Doctor and Ace in it, and looks to be a good read. I start reading it, and quickly realize I'm in the grip of some staunch XTC fans: - The Doctor and Ace first materialize on Earth mere yards away from the Uffington Horse. - The pub in the village where the story is set is called The Green Man. (Admittedly, probably a coincidence, but a hell of a one at that.) And finally: - A later chapter in the book is called "Sacrificial Bonfire." I was pleased to find this. XTC and Doctor Who go together very well. In fact, I'm now regretting that I didn't wear my Tom Baker scarf when I met Andy at the Border's signing; it would've sparked some nice conversation, and I could've gotten a picture taken of us wearing it, wrapped around both our necks like the cover of the Help! video. I almost choked on my toast. For those of you who don't live in the States or aren't familiar with the show, Car Talk involves 2 wisecracking brothers from Cambridge, MA who answer all sorts of car related questions (I have an old flame in Saskatoon who is a mechanic and I used to send him tapes of the show because he couldn't get it up there). Funny even for those of us, like myself, who don't own cars and have no intention of getting one any time soon (I'm lucky enough to live in Boston which has decent public transportation). The song they played as they went to the other break was Lucinda Williams 'Car Wheels On A Gravel Road'. Keep your ears open, 'River Of Orchids' could be next. Regarding the Mass pike, and interstates in general, they seem to take the most dull scenery in the entire state and make a road out of it. I also know 93 all to well as it is a couple of blocks from my house and I wake up in the morning and can see the daily gridlock from my kitchen window. Here are two orders that, after almost two months of on and off experimentation sound great to me at this point (especially AV1, I think I've tried just about every combination that made any sort of thematic sense). Apple Venus: Side One: 11, 10, 7, 6, 8 Side Two: 5, 1, 2, 3, 4, 9 This one nails it. Listen and be in awe of a new AV1 EXPERIENCE, not just a collection of songs. Last Balloon is much better at the beginning, it's an anchor that the whole thing can start from and build on (then soon drop like some sand), and I Can't Own her is THE last track of this album -- listen after hearing all the other songs and you'll see. Can anyone spot a theme and direction the album takes when experienced in this order (there are probably multiple interpretations, but I'd love to hear any thoughts you might have)? Not to mention the incredible way I feel when it's all done, leaves a different (and I think, better), more complete impression than the original order. Heck, River of Orchids even works beautifully and makes great thematic and emotional sense here, even though it's not the first song, which I long thought it had to be. As always, please don't flame me to a char, it's just my opinion (however brilliant I know it really is ;) ), but I've been seeking this earnestly for a while now, simply because I consider the AV1 material superior, but the album as a whole just didn't carry the same punch as any one song. Hope this increases someone's enjoyment of this fantastically brilliant album. Now for non XTC content of the same type: Magical Mystery Tour by the Beatles. The explanation here is simple: the order is perfect, I finally realized today that for me they just started the album in the wrong place. Start with Your Mother Should Know (the perfect opening song, so orderly and old-fashioned, a great juxtaposition for the incredible experimentation and creativity to follow), let the disc play through to the end, then start at the beginning and end with Blue Jay Way -- what I always considered one of the beatles few "just OK" songs actually becomes a great album closer! Order: 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 1 , 2, 3, 4 Sides one would end at penny lane or baby you're a rich man (I'm leaning towards ending side one with penny lane and starting side two with baby you're a rich man), either way works for both side one end and side two begin. Other album I like except for AV 1 Believe me or not, but there are in fact other new albums except for the majestic Apple Venus which are out, and which I really love. 1) Jim O' Rourke - Eureka The producermusician wizard Jim O'Rourke (Gastr del Sol et al.), who has prdouced an amzing mass of stuff, remixed Stereolab, Coldcut, Tortoise etc., say, the melting pot of Chicago's so-called "postrock" bundle, comes up with his first solo album and it's a winner. From chambermusic-like tracks like "Eureka" (the best cooperation between classical instruments and synths/samples I've heard) to GREAT POP as in "Something Big". If you like good music, this is some. 2) Sam Prekop - same The singer/guitarist of The Sea and Cake, his first solo album, of course all the usual suspects contributing : John McEntire, Jim O'Rourke, Archer Prewitt, all there. This is like, spring, love, soul, beauty. I listen to this every day, in fact, more than to Apple Venus. If you want the sun in your heart and springtime to drive that long winter out, put on this album, and die of its beauty. That's all. Thanks for reading.

There's some place on there where you can write in your Top Ten, but I lost the e-mail address. Let's all vote for any XTC album. It's for the Top 100 of the Century.
