Chalkies,
I wonder if a better gauge of impact of music on one might be a short
list of singles (video or vinyl/cd/cassette) , say , top 5.
Of course for me, BOTH Beatles and Beach Boys are bands whose music I
enjoy (I've been listening HEAVILY to "God Only Knows" while at work,
when testing cd players in cars during road tests, recently), so they'd
be included on my list (from the Beatles, "It's All Too Much", from The
Yellow Submarine..GAWD I love that cartoon!..and that song make the hair
on the back of my neck tingle!).
Anyhoo, on with the short list:
1. "Save It For Later" by The English Beat....THIS tune introduced me to
thier best, and sadly, last album, and it ranks accordingly. One of the
bright spots of my High School experience was being introduced to Dave
Wakelings' wonderful voice via "Special Beat Service"...AND hearing
"March of the Swivel Heads" AKA "Rotating Head" (one of my absolute
favorites, as quirky and energetic as it is) used in the movie Ferris
Bueller's Day Off. So I grew up in the 80's *shrug* , what can I say?
2. The video for SWOT (Senses Working Overtime for the newbies) was what
planted the excellent kernel of XTC fandom in my brain that has grown
over the years. I saw it on some independent dance/video-of-the-day
show that was shown on a local station in the afternoon, jumping on the
early success of MTV. The combination of "seeing" XTC "perform" this
tune and it's mix of English historical references and absolutely
WONDERFUL music (not to mention AP's distinctive singing) implanted
themselves so deep in my ming, that years later I would find m'self
humming the chorus, or bits of lyric, and yet I hadn't heard the sond
for maybe 6 years or so! The rest is history...
There's four singles.....and the last would be The Cars' "My Best
Friends' Girl". When this tune from thier debut album burst onto the AM
Top 40 station in San Francisco, all of my pop music sensibilities began
to gel (and me bein' at the ripe old age of 10!). I have learned of
other musical styles and bands, and have even learned to appreciate some
genres (EXCEPT Country..I just don't geddit..I'm a city-boy, been living
in the San Francisco Bay Area all my life, so I don't feel a connection
with songs from country artists), BUT, that single HOOKED me, and to
this day I get a warm-fuzzy feeling whenever I hear it.

I have a collection of "Reflex" Magazines (most of them with limited
release flexi-singles), and issue #24, from May, 1992 has XTC on the
cover as the main story (the release of "Nonsuch") and noted just below
them is TMBG!!
I don't believe a new issue has been out for years, but I could list
what issues I have along with which flexi-single came with which issue
that I have. If interested, email me at my addy (DON"T ask for me to
post issue contents via Chalkhills..they aren't relevant to this group,
and I don't wish to cause Carpal Tunnel Syndrome for Mr. Relph nor
m'self with the listing). I'd be interested in obtaining a decent copy
of "Look Look", if possible.
Oh, before I forget....most embarrassing single...as I was digging
through my little collection of 45's, I found "I Wanna Be A Cowboy" by
Boys Don't Cry (Oh, I'm SO embarrassed..blame it on my youth..and the
fact that I had a friend named "Ted", yo yo yo).

Well since Brian Wilson is such a hot topic here lately, here is a book I
just have to recommend to you all. It's called Whale Music, by Paul
Quarrington. It's the story of Des Howell, a pop-song writing genius,
psychotic, filthy rich recluse who runs naked around his mansion eating
donuts in a sleepless, drug soaked delirium, working on his magnum opus, a
composition for the whales that swim by his estate from time to time.
Quarrington takes the Wilson legend and runs gleefully with it. A whacky,
hilarious homage to the frailty and strength of the human spirit.
Regarding the thread that someone brought up about having Andy and Colin
singing(lead) together on the same song - I think it's a great idea, I'd
love it if they'd try it. Brings up possibilities for voicing different
characters, interacting, arguing, etc. Examples that come to mind: The
Who, Pink Floyd (Comfortably Numb), Chicago (Dialogue). A Day in the Life,
of course.
Is anyone here into Steven Sondheim? Now there is a great songwriter.
Acknowledged for years as the the king of Broadway, he is possibly the only
living songwriter that I would rate higher than our esteemed Mr. Partridge.
Here is an artist with a stunning command of language, an extraordinary
purveyor of wordplay who can toss around puns and witticisms like nobody's
business.
In Sondheim's absolutely mesmerizing musical, Sweeney Todd, there's a song
called A Little Priest. In it, Sweeney and Mrs. Lovett hatch a plan in
which Sweeney the barber will slit the throats of his customers and send
the bodies down to Mrs. Lovett's shop(the floor below), where she will bake
them into meat pies.
Here they gleefully scheme of preying on people from all walks of life:

Some have mentioned their favourite...bits of XTC songs and I would just like to add mine in. "I'd Like That" has been a personal favourite since receiving the demos and in it's complete form on the album, I really "love" the cracking noise at "My face would crack in two...". Also the harmonizing on the word "Sunflower"(perhaps I'm phrasing that wrong being musically illiterate) creates a slight buzz in my ear reminding me of buzzing bees. This song just gives me such a warm squishy feeling. It's a masterpiece in my opinion. I'm finding myself drawn to Colin's songs on this album. They sound so complete. "Frivolous Tonight" makes me listen intently to the story unfolding. I absolutely love the line about driving the one (who wants to talk shop) to the door with a broom or a mop. And his Hip-hoooo-ray, puts this little smile on my face. Oh! One morning as I was meditating thoughtfully on AV1 (translation: sleeping with my headphones on), I got the feeling I was listening to "She's Leaving Home" by the Beatles. Maybe it's a stretch, but it's what popped into my head. "Green Man"- It has this...gypsy feel to it. I would certainly be proud to dance for the Green Man. Oooo! I would let down my long red hair and cut loose. Sorry! I was overcome... I just melt when Andy worbles(?) on Waaaa-alll-allll. "Havest Festival" *sigh* This song is better than a stack of romance novel! My thoat closes when I hear the wedding bell chime! Oh those longing looks....*sigh*....*breathe*...talk amongst yourselves for a moment....*sigh*. Okay, I'm ...I'm...fine now. Where's my tissue? *sniff* Love the sound of moving chairs and the sudden hush in the beginning. Jumping off of the XTC bandwagon and into a completely different subject... Super Furry Animals. Anyone into them? I had the pleasure of seeing them live a couple of weekends ago with Dave, David and Jennifer. I dig their groovy sound. Talk about cutting loose! I certainly let my hair down that night. They opened for Olivia Tremor Control (who were also very good) but I really enjoyed the SFAs. Met a couple of XTC fans at the gig as well. Hello to Sean(spelling?) and if you get a chance, shout a hello to your mates Scott (the bus guy!) and Manchester Andy(who owes me ten pounds! ;) ) for me. What a good idea to talk as an extra track on a CD, tho' my friends who heard it liked the song but were bored by the chat. I loved it. Still, I guess that it was meant mainly for us aficionados and that's nice.

I always assumed the 'wasp' used here was the acronym for 'white
anglo-saxon protestant', and although I could probably come up with some
contrived explanation on how this fits in with the racial elements of
NTIOW, I'll leave that up to someone else. :-)

Lloyb Weber's work is: Trite (extremely trite), boring, lacking in imagination, and not terribly original. His 'serious' music is about as worthwhile as Paul Mccartney's classical works (that's an insult, folks. Paul needs to stick to writing sappy pop tripe-he's mastered that form). I've heard all of his major works, and have found one piece that I think is worth a repeat listen: 'Memory' from Cats (and of course he's not responsible for the lyrics). You want good writing for the stage? Try almost anythng written by Stephen Sondheim. Into the Woods, Sunday in the Park With George and Sweeney Todd are my favorites, but they're all good. Sondheim's writing is better, miore fresh, and more original than LLoyd Weber's, and isn't trite and cloying like the crap that spews from LLoyd Weber's pen. Sorry, no XTC content here, but Lloyd Weber is so overrated that I coulden't resist trashing him.

Those were astute observations...I do indeed try to drop in the occasional Hint to the Hip. Did a little tribute to Sifl and Ollie last month that got a glob of email. I've learned that you mention Ayn Rand at peril to your in-box. For those of you who get Hedge in the sunday funnies, coming up 4-25 you'll be able to spy R.J and Verne lazing in a hot tub with AV1 apparently playing on the boombox. You may have to squint, but it's there. Thank you Stephanie and Mark for your scrutiny! On the topic of the Last Balloon's crafty Partridge vocal segue to trumpet, and possible percursers... besides the ones already mentioned... Cleo Laine and John Dankworth would often trade vocal/instrumental licks back and forth during which her voice would swap with his sax in a seamless blend. This would be live...really gripping. On Beaver and Krause's "All Good Men", there's a one of my favorite examples of this (sort of) in which a native american storyteller's voice is sampled and looped and distorted till it becomes a haunting background motif against which a solo is played (if memory serves...it's been a while). Not a segue from vocal to instrument per se, but cool, and if it inspires one of you imaginary people out there to go track down a Beaver & Krause disc, I'll have spread some joy. Speaking of looping and distorting, which I've now sort of done with this thread... Steve Reich's early stuff does it masterfully. His found-sound recordings like "It's Gonna Rain" loop and distort and merge till it's like listening to sonic hallucinations. Fripp and Eno were taking notes. Date: Sun, 11 Apr 1999 16:16:11 CDT I think I may have missed the boat on this discussion, and at the risk of showing my age (or lack thereof), the album that influenced my musical tastes/outlook on life/attitude towards mars colonization was probably They Might Be Giants' Flood. It's not my favorite album in the world (or even my favorite TMBG album) but it introduced me to the notion that radio music is not the only music there is. I was actually introduced to XTC through TMBG's appearance on A Testimonial Dinner. I bought it the day it came out and thought "hey, these songs are neat" and as I happened to be in a mall the next day, I picked up Skylarking. Needless to say, I was blown away. He and Colin were painting Idea Studios and its construction is coming along nicely. Tomorrow Andy will be doing 6 radio interviews (a few for US stations) but he's doing it from a studio in Swindon and his voice will be beamed over ISDN lines to the stations live. There is a week long European AV1 promo tour thing coming up. Also earlier today, Andy was recording the "How 'I'd Like That' Came to Be" thing for a future single (just like the "Easter Theater" one). Andy's son Harry has drawn himself and this drawing will be used as a template for a minor character on a future episode of The Simpsons. The character's name will be Harry but whether or not his last name will be Partridge is up in the air. This came about through someone Andy knows that animates for The Simpsons. (Stephanie: I told Andy about your Simpsons episode ideas and he wants to see a copy of it). In a few weeks Andy and Colin may be coming to NYC to shoot a video for "Greenman". AV2 won't be started until June. "I'm The Man Who Murdered Love" will now be included as one of the tracks on the album. It's likely all the drums will be redone since only two songs were partially finished to date and it will be better if they all sound alike to some degree. Nick Davis will be the engineer. After years of saying I want to get a tattoo, I took myself down to the Celtic Dragon and got the chalk horse of Uffington tattooed on my left shoulder blade. It is symbolic for me on several levels. First of all because of its strong link to XTC and English Settlement in particular (my fave XTC album). Secondly, because horses have played a bit part in my life (grew up in a very horsey family). And, finally because I am interested in most things Celtic (Irish on my Mother's side). It seemed like the perfect design, though the range of skulls with bulging eyeballs were rather tempting. If anyone local is interested in getting a tattoo at the Celtic Dragon (Dunks, perhaps?) they should ask for Mike. He's very kind and very skilled at distracting you from the pain, which wasn't as bad as I imagined. Has anyone else got an XTC tattoo? Do tell... Toni.

Hi Everyone!
I just got a copy of the new EASTER THEATRE single,
direct from England, hand-delivered to me.
The packaging is absolutely wonderful!
Gold (sun) yellow cover with an egg covering
part of the peacock feather. The CD itself looks
like a fried egg (sunny-side up). It includes a copy
of Andy's hand-written original lyrics.
It's interesting to note that the last line in the chorus
originally went:
"Hooray, here comes Easter and at last she's not a joke"
Glad he changed that!!!
The "How Easter Theatre Came To Be" is also very interesting.
I hadn't realized that part of the tune had been running around
Andy's brain since the Skylarking sessions.
Overall I'd say it's a great single to get a hold of.
Also (another gift from my English boyfriend) I now
own an illustrated short story about the origins of the Green Man.
It's called (surprise) "The Green Man" by Jane Gardam.
The paintings are great, although I haven't yet read it.
(I will soon!)

Two Pints Of Lager And A Packet Of Crisps, Please (Splodgenessabounds), When The Apple Blossoms Bloom In The Windmills Of Your Mind, I'll Be Your Valentine (Emerson, Lake & Palmer), and What Need Have I For This, What Need Have I For That, I Am Dancing At The Feet Of My Lord, All Is Bliss, All Is Bliss (Shakti with John McLaughlin). I just can't separate them, although I realise there *is* a difference between "wacky" and "pretentious". Most unpleasant musical experience : I saw Bob Dylan perform in 1992, and didn't recognise the first five songs until they were almost over. They were All Along The Watchtower, Tangled Up In Blue, Lay Lady Lay, It Takes A Lot To Laugh and She Belongs To Me - I know the songs well, but his singing was so far off-key (even for Dylan) that the songs were almost totally unrecognisable ; a complete waste of money.
