It doesn't bear an identifying sticker, so people who don't know what the artwork looks like; thumbing through the racks in search of it; might miss it altogether, unless they are attracted by the feather. BTW, the Oz release has the pointy bit of the feather pointing up - thereby spoiling the original intent IMO. The "Festival" logo appears on the rear, just near the "Idea" logo. Dunno what the disc itself looks like - I couldn't be bothered taking it to the counter to have those consarned security brackets removed. 2) Recently there's been speculation about who the youngest list member might be. In discussing this, the frighteningly boyish Todd Bernhardt (39 yo I am reliably informed) suggested asking about who might be the oldest? F'rinstance, I'm 3 months older than AP. Varese Sarabande have issued two series of albums which cover this time - Sunshine Days (manufactured psychey harmony pop, 5th Dimension, Spoonful etc.) - and Bubblegum's Greatest Hits (self-explanatory). I wonder if this person was thinking of the song "The Short Answer" from the album Workers Playtime which can be said to be an equally bitter song about the break up of a relationship. It also contains the line "Between Marx and Marzipan in the dictionary there was Mary". It's also a very personal song as it was indeed about Billy Bragg's relationship with a woman named Mary. Oh, and the Billy Bragg-XTC connection is that both are signed to Cooking Vinyl. Huw Davies p.s. "Easter Theatre" just gets better and better every time I listen to it. Personnaly, I think that "I'd Like That" and "Your Dictionnary" would have the most chances of having some kind of commercial success. Someone mentioned that "I Can't Own Her" would be a likely candidate. I personnaly don't think so. Don't get me wrong, it's a beautiful song...but I think it would be a big mistake if TVT releases it as a single. After listening steadily to this cd for the past 2 weeks, I now can say that there's a big potential for some kind of "popular" recognition. I find it's a very strong album. The only song I skip is "The Last Balloon". My favorite ? "Easter Theatre", "Harvest Festival" and "Your Dictionnary" (I actually find the spelling thing interesting). Anyway, just my opinion. I suppose having recorded "Metal Box" and having made everyone else look stupid, the band had a lot to live up to. "Album" seems to be the only other PiL record which ever gets any credit, but "Happy?" and "9" were both pretty entertaining, and "Commercial Zone" is worth checking out. Likewise "Flowers Of Romance", although the relentless tunelessness is a bit much, even for me. "Live In Tokyo" is fairly atrocious, but then a lot of live albums are. I still haven't heard Lydon's solo album though...has anyone? Dom.

You don't even have to be an old fart to think so. However, if I had to to choose an album by anyone else to compare with it, it would have to be XTC's Skylarking, an album I HAVE referred to as the "Sgt. Pepper of the '80s." 'Fraid I couldn't disagree more. After the second play of AV1, this really stood out. Many other people pick this on early listens too. Greenman is too long to be a single. As for I Can't Own Her, I really can't think of a *less* suitable song on the album for a single. I think Frivolous Tonight would be the number two single - it really divides people and thus really attracts attention. I'm surprised at people dissing it as a piece of fluff song, it's very Ray Davies in its comment on English life, a memorable melody - very singable. Oh yeah, all IMHO. It actually really amazes me the diversity of people's favourite AV1 songs, someone posted the other day with thier fave AV1 songs and they were all except one songs that I'm not fond of.

Pepper" equivalent is Sgt. Pepper. (well, at least when I was a little tyke. Loved it). My "Sgt. Pepper" equivalent, in the current parlance, was Black Sea. Had the flip side of D&W on a tape with U2s Boy, just getting into music other than fusion. Asked for Black Sea for xmas, heard Respectable Street, thought, well, hey, this guy's talking sense here, someone thinks the same as me?, and was hooked. One other thing -- I second the poster who picked Violent Femmes. Their first record rocked my world too. Luckily, I lived in Milwaukee Wisconsin, the band's hometown, and saw them many times during that era. I was always amazed that they were picked up by the jock/frat boy crowd, and felt sorry for them (and me) because of it. Ah, to revel in the glory of XTC obscurity Best wishes, RFAB PS - Yacht Dance would be my choice for a wonderful home performance. And my opinion: AV1 is a classic (they all are) but not the best. I adore Frivolous for the way it makes me so happy and yet melancholy at the same time, and Harvest for the same reason. Bye!

XTC Now what's all this then? How come all the personal "Sgt Peppers" posted so far are not by XTC? Well, i would never have heard XTC had Elvis Costello not opened my ears and mind to what was being called 'new wave'. It was nearly impossible to hear it or read about it. Rural mid-michigan in the late 1970's was a radio wasteland-top 40 disco on AM and hard rock (Zeppelin, Stones, Who) on FM. What little press punk and new wave recieved in the U.S. was almost uniformely negative. FOrtunately, some adventerous programmer at a local station decided to expand their listener's tastes by slipping 'Accidents Will Happen' into late-night rotation. I fell in love immediately, although in my embaressing naivete I thought Costello sounded like Bob Dylan! Frustrated that I couldent find the song on record, I was browsing a K-Mart record rack and happened to pick up a copy of Armed Forces. Oh My God! that song I love is Elvis Costello! Hearing that album completely changed my taste in music. I started hunting for new wave on the radio, found a couple of sympathetic stations, discovered Trouser Press magazine, and ostracized myself from my peer group (new wave mas Most Uncool at my high school). I discovered XTC about a year and a half after this, after hearing "Generals & Majors" on the radio. Black Sea was my favorite record for a long time, but Costello got there first and enabled the shift in taste.

I interviewed Andy P a few weeks back, and it was one helluva lotta fun. I've spoken with him before, back in '89, and had forgotten how much fun he is to talk to. Merely a man, my ass! I'll soon post the entire interview on my site, Optimism's Flames. Oh...& he and I talked a bit about the internet, and our beloved Chalkhills. "Talk about the misinformation highway", he said. I asked him..."Andy, The Last Balloon is obviously about Richard Branson's failed attempts at circling the globe in a hot air balloon"...& Andy howled at that....and then screamed "IT IS NOT". I've seen some great postings lately about "MY" Sgt Pepper: Tyler's was Elvis' Armed Forces!...one of my faves. Phil's was Elvis' Imperial Bedroom...classic! ...saw several mentions of other greats, but must admit that there was one that really hit home with me, and I have to say that I couldn't agree more... Josh said that during college it was King Crimson's Discipline, and that it's now Jeff Buckley's Grace. Damn good call Josh! I lived with Discipline for years, along with the other Belew KC releases, and Belew's solo schtuff(Lone Rhino/Twang Bar King), and The Bears, though Discipline is clearly the best of those releases. Words can't express what Buckley's Grace means to me...it's nothing short of amazing. I've got a lot of Buckley live boots, if anyone is interested. Okay...Falknerds unite! Jason is one of the few artists around that really matter these days(right Mandy?), and if anyone is interested, I've got a high quality copy of his pre-release version of the new Can You Still Feel, called Amazing The Survivors...which has slightly different versions of the new tunes, and a couple of tunes which don't appear on the new release...for whatever reason, since they are great...if ya wanna get a copy of it, drop me a line. Check this out now: The Hang-Ups '97? release So We Go....OH, MY, GOD! If you want to read my review of AV1, check it out at "www.musicmonitor.net"....and don't give me any shit about the ROO/Glass comment!. I wrote that damn thing more than 3 weeks prior to the release of the album, and it's just now out!...how's that for timely?...my interview article may just get printed before the release of AV2. Lastly....I got an interesting surprise in the mail. Someone sent me an autographed copy of AV1. WHO???? The package was mailed to me from Ontario Canada, and has a Universal Studios return address on it. Although the technology thing is also true, as I found out when I moved to Topanga Canyon to be at one with nature and have a garden and stuff, and lasted about a week before my brain exploded and I started driving into town to buy toilet paper because I was down to six rolls, just to get out of there. I rarely *need* to drive anywhere; I live in one of the few Los Angeles neighborhoods in which you can walk to anything, which I like. But my car is where I go to relax. I have a convertible with a great sound system... it's a really, really good place to be. No more, no less. My original comment was just meant to be sort of flip... didn't mean to stress anyone out! All it boils down to is that when I listen to that song, which I love, I find the idea it presents really unappealing. To me. Personally. If you have a happy car-free life, bless you. Not really... for most people this would simply mean they had to
keep working all day to barely stay alive on a meagre ration of
inferior food and filthy water. And once every few years there'd be a
_real_ famine or else you would die in a flu epidemic. Or one of
those cosy little wars.
Besides, we just couldn't cope with it, no way. We're way too
'civilzed' to survive under those kind of circumstances.
No hospitals or dentists, no shopping malls, no drive-in
restaurants, no Cocoa Puffs. But worst of all... no XTC !
No, living in the past is _not_ for me, although i wouldn't mind a
small time warp back to let's say 1981 or '82 to see them play live
just once. Please God, that's not much too ask, is it?
