Chalkers,

What? There's going to be no book tour? This can't be. Oh well, let's just
hope they do a signing tour. I know they're busy with getting Apple Venus
done. I just knew that they would just do NY, and nowhere else. Man, this
isn't fair.

I know I'm going to play tons of music from XTC on my radio show. I have to
wait until I go home for Thanksgiving to get my demos. I'll play them on my
radio show. Oh, it's so fun to be a college DJ.

Squeeze was called "U.K. Squeeze" in America for their first album only,
supposedly to avoid confusion with a band called Tight Squeeze, but they
went back to being Squeeze with their second album, in America anyway. Do
you mean to say that they've remained U.K. Squeeze in Australia to this

Seems to be the common consensus, to be added to my purchase list after the
1st two Pretty Things albums plus SF Sorrow on CD, Transistor Blast, and
some more 13th Floor Elevators, this could be an expensive month.

Now I will possibly find out if any of the big drum sound of D&W or BS

Hmmm I wouldn't normally feel this way about most people but why wait for
him to call anybody a wanker, being Phil Collins is reason enough.

I thought the stumpy sweaty (hairy) one was leaving the UK if Labour came
to power, I'd even pay for the ticket.

Anyway, Paul Hogan had a character called Leo Wanker (but then that's
Austrailian humour for you).

John Wayne uttered the word bollocks in one of his films, it was actually
pronounced 'ballicks', which if anybody has visited the North of Ireland
they will hear that pronnounciation.

I have the vision of a (Northern) Irish born member of the film crew
laughing his balls off at Big John, ad-libbing using a phrase he has heard
on set (the phrase was "your bollocks").

Oh dear a bit lacking in XTC content this time

Indeed, Romeo Void opened, followed by Wall of

there was another band called the Beat from the States. Actors Equity

Chalkies,

While waiting to talk with one of my professors, I picked up a copy of the
A&E section of our local newspaper. In it, they profiled a Bath (ME)
singer-songwriter who lists, as heavy influences, Robyn Hitchcock and XTC.
Apparently, this guy's producer had to admonish him for sounding "too
British." I didn't know that was a *bad* thing...

I had to call United Health Care this morning. While on hold, muzak came

But of course all of the personality was sucked out of the song; still...
I never thought I'd see (or in this case 'hear') the day when one of

Talking of albums. I went to the mastering the other night and it was
absolutely bloody marvellous. The "final" track order, if anything is final
on this project is:
1. River Of Orchids
2. I'd Like That
3. Easter Theatre
4. Knights in Shining Kharma
5. Frivolous Tonight
6. Green Man
7. Your Dictionary
8. Fruit Nut
9. I Can't Own Her
10. Harvest Festival
11. The Last Balloon"

That seems to be the facts, folks.

Subject: Demo-strations

KenL mentioned obtaining a copy of the Nonsuch Demos and "was surprised at
how similar they were to the final versions."

Although I have enjoyed hearing Andy and Colin's demos before the final
album versions, I too have noticed the all too frequent lack of
differentiation between the demo and the final version. Messrs.. Partridge
and Moulding appear to be too good at crafting their musical visions in demo
form, applying only minor musical nuances and the polish of the recording
studio to the final version.

Which leaves us to ponder: Apart from songs that haven't been officially
recorded, what appeal would a CD of XTC demos have for the non-rabid fan?
And would the existing fan base (that has to have everything) be sufficient
to make such an effort profitable for the band, Idea, Cooking Vinyl, and
TVT?

Not to say that I wouldn't run out and snap it up if it were released (since
I certainly don't have all the demos), but has Andy or Colin ever produced a
demo that went through major revisions in the studio and emerged
substantially different from it's original idea?!

An example might be to compare the progression of "Strawberry Fields" on the
Beatles' Anthology series to the demo and final version of "Peter
Pumpkinhead". Perhaps a CD of XTC studio outtakes would be more revealing.

Is the true enjoyment of a demo the ability to trace the musical evolution
and creative birthing of a song rather than listen to the musical equivalent
of a pencil sketch verses its full color rendering?

Subject: ELVIS AND NO BOOK SIGNING IN BLIGHTY

When I ordered my copy of song stories direct from the publisher, I asked
if any promotional signing would be taking place. I was greeted with an
rather incredulous reply of '' Book signing ?? for XTC ??? oh no ..''
Then we find out that there is a big push down under (oh er) and a signing
session in America ,so why not here, you know where it all started ?

Non related but There have been a couple of recommendations to buy the new
CD by Elvis Costello and Burt Bacharach.
I took the plunge and can only agree that it is a worth while buy as an
easy listening 'late night' listen.
My only slight doubt with the album is that you could argue that EC tries a
little too hard to sound like Dionne Warwick on occasions. Although
thinking about it his voice is similar in some ways.
I also bought EC's work with the Brodsky Quartet (The Juliet Letters 1992)
This is harder work but is also a good listen.
I have managed to get tickets to see Bjork performing with the Brodskys at
a small venue in Bristol in early December, which I am looking forward to.

Cant wait to hear 'in your dictionary ' on CD next year.

Subject: Has anyone heard of Random Hold?

Hi, my name is Steven and this is my first posting to Chalkhills.

Here's a question I've had for years and I think a Chalkhill member may be
able to help me.

Former XTC drummer Terry Chambers played in a group called Random Hold at
one point. I think he joined after English Settlement following his
departure from XTC.

All I know about Random Hold is I think they are English and they must have
been recording around the late 70s early 80s. Also, Peter Gabriel's
guitarist David Rhodes played in Random Hold at one point. On Gabriel's
third solo album (Rhodes' first) Rhodes is listed as "courtesey of Random
Hold."

Anyway, here's my questions:

Who played in Random Hold? How many albums did they record and is there
anything available on CD right now? What kind of music was it? If anyone out
there has ANY information (bio or otherwise) on Random Hold, I sure would
appreciate if you email me or post it on the list. With players from XTC and
Peter Gabriel's band, the music must have been interesting to say the least.

Thank you very much,

Adios,
Steven

Seagulls Screaming Kiss Her Kiss Her Pink Soda 7" -- Japan's Seagulls
thrilled the pants off of all present while
opening for Sleater-Kinney at last years YoYo with some of the best
guitar driven indie-pop I've heard in ages w/bass lines to
groove to and vocals to swoon to. This 7" is their first US release and
the two songs just so happen to by my favorites from
the live set. (hooray!) Now that it's finally getting to stores, it's
time to go buy it.

Has anyone ever heard them?

Does anyone know if there were ever any Blegvad books published?

I'm looking specifically for the transcribed words to Night of the
Comet, Balloon, Beetle, Savannah. But I'm interested in reading more of
his poetry, too.

Also, are Blegvad's albums mostly spoken-word or actual songs? Which
titles would you recommend for someone (me) who tends to appreciate the
words over the music?

Thanks,
Janis in NY (waiting and wondering if Andy, Colin and Neville made it to
the USA this week or not)

Subject: NEWS: Andy Partridge Interview

Dear Chalkers,

A new, full-length and in-depth interview with Andy Partridge will be
online at my site as from Wednesday November the 11th
(i'm sure i don't have to remind you that's Andy's birthday :)

Don't miss it - it's quite refreshing and covers a lot
of diverse subjects instead of just the same old standard questions
and it's stuffed with those typical Partridge jokes and jests.

This interview has been conducted a couple of weeks ago by Paul
Culnane and parts of it will be used in a 3 hour XTC special on
Sydney radio station 2RDJ-FM but the complete transcript
of the conversation will be available on the Little Lighthouse only.

Chalkies,

I made the great trek north to Sydney recently, the main purpose being to
propose to my girlfriend (she said *yes*, so I expect virtual roses from
each and every one of you). While there, I took the opportunity to seek out
the few remaining XTC albums I hadn't heard, and actually found one in a
small music store I'd never seen before. Upon grabbing their solitary copy
of "Go 2" (the first copy I'd ever seen of that album, actually), I took it
to the counter and was confronted by....Paul Culnane.

Or so I thought - the guy behind the counter could easily have been his
twin brother. He recognised the all-black-with-white-text cover of the
album and said, "Ah, XTC - that's a great album, isn't it? I've always been
a huge fan".

My message to the rest of the Chalkworld : the Scots might have mastered
the cloning of sheep, but in Sydney, they've started cloning Chalkhillians.
Be afraid - be very afraid....

Iain
