There is a dance down there called the Shag, so they have clubs dedicated to it. The country group Alabama also had a hit "Shagging on the Boulevard" a couple of years ago. I watched the video, but was disappointed. there was another band called the Beat from the States. Actors Equity
doesn't allow two people to have the same name so perhaps it's the same
deal with band names. That and copyright.

While waiting to talk with one of my professors, I picked up a copy of the
A&E section of our local newspaper. In it, they profiled a Bath (ME)
singer-songwriter who lists, as heavy influences, Robyn Hitchcock and XTC.
Apparently, this guy's producer had to admonish him for sounding "too
British." I didn't know that was a *bad* thing...

Although I have enjoyed hearing Andy and Colin's demos before the final album versions, I too have noticed the all too frequent lack of differentiation between the demo and the final version. Messrs.. Partridge and Moulding appear to be too good at crafting their musical visions in demo form, applying only minor musical nuances and the polish of the recording studio to the final version. Which leaves us to ponder: Apart from songs that haven't been officially recorded, what appeal would a CD of XTC demos have for the non-rabid fan? And would the existing fan base (that has to have everything) be sufficient to make such an effort profitable for the band, Idea, Cooking Vinyl, and TVT? Not to say that I wouldn't run out and snap it up if it were released (since I certainly don't have all the demos), but has Andy or Colin ever produced a demo that went through major revisions in the studio and emerged substantially different from it's original idea?! An example might be to compare the progression of "Strawberry Fields" on the Beatles' Anthology series to the demo and final version of "Peter Pumpkinhead". Perhaps a CD of XTC studio outtakes would be more revealing. Is the true enjoyment of a demo the ability to trace the musical evolution and creative birthing of a song rather than listen to the musical equivalent of a pencil sketch verses its full color rendering? - John

I was greeted with an rather incredulous reply of '' Book signing ?? for XTC ??? oh no ..'' Then we find out that there is a big push down under (oh er) and a signing session in America ,so why not here, you know where it all started ? Non related but There have been a couple of recommendations to buy the new CD by Elvis Costello and Burt Bacharach. I took the plunge and can only agree that it is a worth while buy as an easy listening 'late night' listen. My only slight doubt with the album is that you could argue that EC tries a little too hard to sound like Dionne Warwick on occasions. Although thinking about it his voice is similar in some ways. I also bought EC's work with the Brodsky Quartet (The Juliet Letters 1992) This is harder work but is also a good listen. I have managed to get tickets to see Bjork performing with the Brodskys at a small venue in Bristol in early December, which I am looking forward to. Cant wait to hear 'in your dictionary ' on CD next year. Steve Franklin

Hi, my name is Steven and this is my first posting to Chalkhills. Here's a question I've had for years and I think a Chalkhill member may be able to help me. Former XTC drummer Terry Chambers played in a group called Random Hold at one point. I think he joined after English Settlement following his departure from XTC. All I know about Random Hold is I think they are English and they must have been recording around the late 70s early 80s. Also, Peter Gabriel's guitarist David Rhodes played in Random Hold at one point. On Gabriel's third solo album (Rhodes' first) Rhodes is listed as "courtesey of Random Hold." Anyway, here's my questions: Who played in Random Hold? How many albums did they record and is there anything available on CD right now? What kind of music was it? If anyone out there has ANY information (bio or otherwise) on Random Hold, I sure would appreciate if you email me or post it on the list. While there, I took the opportunity to seek out the few remaining XTC albums I hadn't heard, and actually found one in a small music store I'd never seen before. Upon grabbing their solitary copy of "Go 2" (the first copy I'd ever seen of that album, actually), I took it to the counter and was confronted by....Paul Culnane. Or so I thought - the guy behind the counter could easily have been his twin brother. He recognised the all-black-with-white-text cover of the album and said, "Ah, XTC - that's a great album, isn't it? I've always been a huge fan". My message to the rest of the Chalkworld : the Scots might have mastered the cloning of sheep, but in Sydney, they've started cloning Chalkhillians. Be afraid - be very afraid....
