Such a momentous occasion calls for a de-lurking. So, here are my (demo-free) first impressions of AV1: River of Orchids: So, it's to be a Garden of Earthly Delights opening as opposed to a Respectable Street/Peter Pumpkin Head/Wake Up opening. Great song. I'd Like That: I've heard this song a couple times on the radio a few times and although it sounds better on my stereo, it still doesn't do all that much for me. I do like those big-ass jazz chords on "sunflower" though. (In general, I'm a sucker for jazzy vocal harmonies, which is one of the reasons I love I Remember the Sun) Easter Theatre: Starts great and, impossibly, gets better as it continues. O.k., so I'm only 3 songs in, but my bet is it's going to be my fave. Knights in Shining Karma: A beautiful lullaby Frivolous Tonight: Colin makes his first appearance with a Sesame Street-for-adults song. A bit cheesy. Maybe it'll grow on me? Greenman: Shades of Beating of Hearts. Fruity, fun, and (like much of the album so far) cinematic Your Dictionary: I just don't know. The lyrics are pretty good, the music's pretty good...I know! When the piano comes in, it makes me think of that "Because the night belongs to us" song as performed by 10,000 Maniacs. I HATE that song. Fruit Nut: More Sesame Street music from Moulding. Like Frivolous Tonight, it's not bad, but it leaves me wondering if Colin has gone full-blown Bungalow. I Can't Own Her: Well, this at least ties with Easter Theatre for fave song. I've realized that cinematic isn't the right word to describe this album. The way the songs are arranged reminds me more of music from a musical (anyone care to write the plot?). Harvest Festival: See "I Can't Own Her". Damn, Andy's a pretty good lyric writer ain't he? The Last Balloon: When the bass line comes in, it kinda reminds me of That Wave (which I love). Couldent wait until ThursdAy at Borders, had to rush out and buy AV1 today. Sat in my car and tore open the wrapping to find...not much. THe packaging is minimal, although the cover is BEAUTIFUL. Iridescent inks give a glittery shine to the cover-nice. The Real audio files on the Cooking Vinyl site do this cd no justice at all. It may be due to the technology involved, or to the fact that my computer has small speakers, but while listening to the snippets I was, well, underwhwlmed. Listening to the actual cd was a huge improvement. While some of it may need to grow on me some, other tracks are brilliant from the get go. Get yours as soon as you can! I arrived and carefully sat myself down in our eames lounge and ottoman and sat perfectly still for the next fifty minutes and seven seconds while listening to the most joyous noise my ears have heard in the past seven years. Major spine tickling occurred on I'd Like That.....strangely it sounded much better to me than it did on the radio(?), Greenman, Harvest Festival, The Last Balloon, and my absolute favourite from the first day I heard Andy's demo.....Easter Theatre! That song....it can send water spurting from your eyes. The string arrangements are great, the sound is beautiful. The singing, top of form. It was my first listen to Colin's songs and both of them offer a chuckle and they strike me as very catchy......In my mind a return to form. All this jubilation is only tempered by the fact that other than my wife who loves the band but is not quite as fanatical as I am there is no one directly around me who I can really share my joy with. Don't these people understand?! I told one of my co-workers this morning that XTC had a new cd out today. Her reply....she didn't really like Andy's voice?!.....but she liked Sarah McLaughlin's version of Dear God. Oh well. I am just hoping that people out there buy this record. The store I bought my copy from had brought in fifty copies and they had been selling well. To all of you out in Chalkland. Happy listening, and remember we are sharing this together! It was worth the wait. I'm still reeling from my first listen through. Incredible production. My 2yo daughter was bopping along to "Frivolous Tonight" right away. The songs ... well how can a mere mortal comment? They are superb. An initial observation - there are some obvious Beatle-isms (no suprises there) and the whole tone and feel of the record immediately made me think 'White Album' - anyone else think so? I am really starting to come around to the thought that they should have released all the songs as a double CD - it would have been even more of a knockout, if that could be possible. But I guess after 8 years away, and with Transistor Blast also on the shelves, they thought it might be more than the market could bear? Anyway, I hope everyone is loving it as much as I am. BTW I have an American import copy (I'm in Australia) - there is no booklet, just a card cover, no writing, with the title and the credits printed on the inside back cover. Is this the standard edition? Any other variants turned up yet? Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I've been away and am still catching up on back issues of the digest. Yours blissfully Dunks

An open letter to Andy, Colin, and the residents of Chalkhills:
It's Tuesday, February 23rd. After leading a grueling presentation at the
Bath Middle School on sexual harassment, snoozing through two English
classes, and correcting a misunderstanding with a professor, I ventured
down to my local music store to buy "Apple Venus Volume 1."
Actually, "ventured" isn't the right word...more like "peeled out of the
fucking parking lot, and raced, Mario Andretti-style, down into Brunswick."
When I got to Bull Moose Music (the store), I walked in and ventured
towards the "XTC" section.
All I saw, though, was "Skylarking," "Upsy Daisy," and the "Transistor
Blast" set. I was mortified.
So, I made my way to the counter to try and find a salesperson...What the
hell was going on? They told me they'd order a copy! I'm going to have to
drive to Portland, and buy dinner at McDonald's, and...
WAIT! There's a pile of CDs on the counter! I got closer...and
closer...and they were ALL "Apple Venus Volume 1"! There were THIRTY
copies!
"Shit!" I muttered.
At that exact moment, the salesguy approached. "Could I, um, grab a few of
these?" I asked.
"Sure," the salesguy said. "We sorta over-ordered."
"Looks like it," I replied, taking four copies from the top of the stack.
"I know, I know," I said, as he eyed my pile of discs suspiciously. "I'm
buying 'em for my friends."
$54.06 later, I was sitting in my car. My front seat was covered with
copies of "Apple Venus Volume 1."
I couldn't wait. I popped the CD into my Discman, and took a drive up the
coast of Maine. I opened the sunroof. I turned the Jetta's stereo up. I
was in tears. I was in heaven.
The feather sparkles.
Now, you must be saying "Ben is quite a freak, reacting to the album like
that!" I'm not, though...at least I don't *think* I am. Simply put,
"Apple Venus Volume 1" is the most gorgeous, beautiful, overpowering album
I've ever heard. The lyrics and instrumentation are splendid. Nick
Davis's mix is *amazingly good* -- there's a full bottom, and a full top.
"Harvest Festival" is nice and poppy. "River of Orchids" sounds like Steve
Reich on a diet of Beach Boys, Beatles, and your mother. This music is
unique, though. In the words of the head of Bowdoin College's Music
Department (who is going to order the album for the Department): "This is
like nothing I've ever heard before."
Obviously, Amazon.com's customers feel the same way (the album is now at
#33). And, Music Boulevard must also be feeling the XTC pinch (the album
made their top 10 this week). My roommate Curtis (for whom I bought a
copy) was so excited that he brought a Discman and headphones to work with
him.
The feather sparkles.
Please excuse the length of this note, and the omission of any particular
reviews. ALL of the songs, however, have blown my mind. I'm surprised I
can type this.
So: Andy, Colin, Dave, Haydn, Nick, Barry (Hammond), and all the others
involved in this masterpiece: thank you. So much. I've been smiling all
day.

------------------------------ From: ttaylor@traumarecords.com Message-ID: <CEA1F0E4B1B1D211BBD80090273A8C9CDEB5@uni.pacificnet.net> Subject: another long time lurker Date: Tue, 23 Feb 1999 15:57:32 -0800 here is another long time lurker slinking in to the light from the shadows... first, regarding the 'ignore the south' thread, had dinner with mr p in the french quarter last friday night. he had just come off a plane from, of all places, atlanta where he taped an upcoming episode of 'space ghost coast to coast'. so there, save your dixie cups, cause the south is gonna rise again! second, regarding the aforementioned dinner, andy was amazing, funny, happy and a bit tuckered out. i have had the privilege to meet him on five or six occasions, and he has always left me with butterflies in my tummy. and don't quote me on this, but i would say the door is open for a possibility of a few select small live dates in our future. cross your fingers and pray (if you believe). third, regarding av1, not for nothing, but on first listen i hated it. having been a fan since the first record (i was in high school ok?), i thought this was just every song i didn't like from all the albums on one disk. i was disappointed. and it hurt. but luckily, two months and 1,000 spins later it is my favorite xtc album to date. i told andy as much, and he agreed with my theory that the best albums take a bit of getting used to, even for a die hard fan. i'm glad i kept my original thoughts to myself, as i'm sure i would have ended up in the burn ward from all the flames i would have received. i was wrong and admit it freely. lastly, may i humbly suggest that everyone who has a promo copy, or a dupe tape, go out and buy av1 this week. it would be great to see a dent in the soundscan monster. i, myself, am buying 5 and giving them away to skeptical friends. ok, really lastly this time, if anyone wants to have a little get together after the los angeles in store, email me. maybe we can talk the man into joining us, stranger things have happened, like watching mr. p walk down bourbon street!! back to the shadows, ted

In fact it still grates a little, but then I _hate_ pizzicato strings and that is obviously colouring my opinion of it (and Harvest Festival too, although to a much lesser extent). It was quite a shock to have such a negative reaction to an XTC song, but by the time I got to Your Dictionary I was back on an even keel, and on subsequent listens (I'm on my fifth, and I only bought the album, during my lunch break, 10 hours ago) the first half of the album has grown on me each time Cheers, Steve
