Wow.....from some early to their latest (1992, haha). My advice to you is GET THEM ALL!! But I suppose ......if you can't buy them all at once, then go for English Settlement first...or...just buy them in order of release. My first experience with XTC was "Drums and Wires" (on 8-track). Hard to pick a fave when there is not one disliked. I've been a big fan now for 18 years. My guess is that they're talking about "Later..." or The Late Show. If this does go ahead I'd be in 7th heaven; both shows are of a high standard and would probably do a great job. It's too sad - nearly twenty years in a band, the last five of which have been an enforced silence, and Dave leaves just as the new album is nearing completion and release. A mate and i were both talking about our collections of bad 80's sheet music recently. He liked the fact i had the sheet music for "Hungry like the wolf" and "Life in a northern town", and i was impressed that someone would even own up to having "The Riddle" and "Doctor! Doctor!" We made plans to compare collections last Saturday and play through them and see who had the worst stuff. I was worried that someone who owned a Complete Howard Jones songbook might have some real dodgy rubbish, but his collection turned out to be really good. We jammed for ages on songs like "She Bop", "View to a kill" and "Raspberry beret" and were gradually working through the books. I'd just finished a vampish "Like a virgin" that scared away the neighbourhood cats, when my eye fell on the next book in the pile: "Virgin Megahits". I flipped through, groaning in recognition. "The look of love", "Sign your name", "Everybody wants to rule the world", "Karma Chameleon", "Senses working overtime", "Sonic boom boy" etc. Duh! My brain registered what i'd just flipped past. A big full page blurb on XTC, then the sheet music for "Senses working overtime"! I was so speechless i didn't even notice my mate playing "Walk like an egyptian". XTC sheet music! My brain was reeling in shock. I slammed the book down. "Forget the Bangles, we're playing this". "Who's xtc?" Hmm, where to start? I wanted to say they were the most interesting intelligent consistent band i've ever heard who challenged my ideas about music and opened my horizons up to a whole spectrum of more exciting and demanding music than i'd ever though possible and that was why i wasn't still listening to my old Dead or Alive albums ten years later. What i actually said: "They're really great". So we start playing. "Are you sure this is right? It sounds weird." I tell him it's all right and will make more sense once i start doing my Andy impersonation on the vocals. They've simplified the music a lot - the bass especially, but still, it was odd enough for him to ask if it was wrong. "But those notes aren't even in that key". "Yeah, isn't it great?" I'm singing my guts out now, having a ball, tripping over the chords - i know how the song goes and it STILL confuses me. What weird ideas in the music? How did Andy write this??? I stomp out the 12345's... i croon the do do do do's, i even do the "England's glory!" parts. We reach the end and as the last chord dies out i just swoon. I turn to him to say that was really bloody exciting. Before i can he picks up the next book and says "Well that was weird. Oooh, Kylie Minogue". Oh well, i'm hoping you'll all understand... BTW, For all those who are still wondering, the "All the world is football shaped" is denoted in the sheet music as the "MIDDLE SECTION". The "And birds might fall..." bit is the BRIDGE. ONE LAST SAD PLEA: If anyone owns a copy of the 1987 Westworld album "Where the action is" on CD they're willing to trade, get in touch.

Hence the video for The Meeting Place (as far as my poor memory serves) was filmed in Portmerrion (of the Prisoner fame), for a Jools Holland BBC special, though personally it would have been more suited to a Dukes video. The strange thing is that one programme by the BBC that may have suited the band before recording even started was Video Nation (explination for non UK readers will follow), as they could have made a pretty interesting documentry from their own viewpoint, and had some of the BBC production facilitys available to them (may have got them enough equipment together to produce some sort of promo video together on their budget). Video Nation explination: The BBC (Dog <sic> bless em), have a Community/Education branch that lends professional quality video equipment to (potentially) interesting members of the public to document a year of their lives. I'm not sure wether they are paid or not but it would be interesting to see a XTC at the Manor or Play at Home completely from the bands perspective (and Diffords face when the husk of a recording studio was shown and followed by him attempting to charge for it). Friends are friends, but as Jools is the producer of the show, money is also money (as Chris Difford or rather his brother inlaw) proved), and if it is commercially wise for Jools to have XTC on the show then I really don't think the Difford question would come into it. Anyway on the matter of moving images what are the promotional plans, videos are ridiculously expensive, and to be honest I have only ever seen three or four promos that have enhanced the tracks they are attached to. Anyway I was wondering considering there are a couple of individuals out there attached to companys with serious CGI rendering hardware/software, possibly their employers could be persuaided to donate some time on a render farm to a worthy cause ? Someone I used to know introduced me to XTC not too long ago. The first song I heard of theirs was "Dear God". This same person also recommended I listen to WLIR (92.3) in New York. I listen to this station all the time, at work and at home. So, today while working late on a miserable Monday, with no end to my day in sight, I hear a familiar song - yes, "Dear God". It's the first XTC song I've heard on this station since I started listening to it. Needless to say, this song is somewhat sentimental as it was the start of something good and I was thrilled to hear it. Thankfully, no one was around when I turned the volume up as loud as it could go!!!!!! It made a miserable Monday a bit less miserable!!!!! Let's hope they play more and more XTC!!!!!!

My best memory was playing pre-gig roulette with Martin Chambers (drummer for the Pretenders). He was surprised that any one knew who he was. Elvis and Pricilla were married in the Aladdin. Somewhat chuffed, Wes um, xtc content, Dave leaving wasn't truly a surprise.

Tour with Aimee Mann and guest on other people's albums - okay - so, that's one way to get out in public. But to record his own music? What's been keeping him from doing that until now? And especially now, when they just got some semblance of control on their destiny with Idea/Cooking Vinyl. They could conceivably tour, sell more records and _make_ money now - as opposed to the day when they toured and _owed_ money to Virgin or some vile, crooked manager. Maybe it's a gambit to get Andy to cede some control, or at least tour - which would help three men and their families (at least A.P.'s got to pay child support, right?) put some more cake in the bank. Geez - I don't think Dave's timing is the best, but if that's what he really wants - I'll certainly buy his product. _wk-

Believe me, I'm not happy about it either. It's a shame. You all know that there is more to the story. I am in the unfortunate and somewhat tricky place of being friendly with both Andy and Dave. I am sure you all have questions and concerns about this which you'd like me to answer or elaborate on. I ask that you consider my position and don't put me in an even more uncomfortable spot by expecting me to be the one who explains it further.
