Subject: Some Small Thoughts

Howdy All,

For some reason I was thinking about XTC/Chalkhills this morning and
hence have decided to inflict my ideas on you.

1. Rasing up Paper And Iron for the boys. Why don't our boys have a
limited pre-release of (for the lack of a better name) Firework with
special (but cheap) packaging. If they made between 500 and 1000
"First addition" Firework CDs and charged a premium ($30-$35US) the
band could earn some money early in the CDs sales to pay production
bills. For the special packaging, I would be happy with the standard
CD cover singed by all the boys. What would any one else need to be
interested in such a deal?

2. A Chalkhills mascot. Perhaps small white pony named "Dusty". Naw
didn't think so but I could still see: "Whats that Dusty?! Andy's
trapped in the candy mine with Colin and Dave!" (See why I try my
hardest not to thing in the morning.)

Bye for now. (promise to keep an empty head in to morning

Hello everyone, almost none of you will know who I am because I've been
lurking on chalkhills without posting for *gasp* almost two years. Or
something shameful. Anyway, I don't have much of an issue, except that I
listened to "Oranges and Lemons" today, and it made my heart sing, and
that Portland local band Sunset Valley sound very much like D&W era XTC
with just a hint of Skeleton Key througn in for confusion's sake.

I am still among you. Just too tired to speak up.

Subject: Andy's Great

Chalkers,

Hello, it's me again. I just wanted to ask a question, what ever happened
to the Perdix, the web site all about Andy? That was a great web page. I
think there should be a whole web page on him. He's my favorite member of
the group.

I wish I could've been in NYC to see Mr. P, but I live in Buffalo. It would
take me about eight hours to get there, and I don't know anybody there. I
wish Andy could come to Buffalo that would be so great to see him. I hope
the band goes on tour.

I don't think they shouldn't do a stadium tour. I don't want them to end up
like U2. They should just stick to small clubs or theaters. If they do
tour they should come to Buffalo. I would definitely go see them.

Does anybody know if any of the members read Chalkhills? If they do, we
shouldn't complain about them. We should show them all the support we can
give them.

Also, why isn't there an XTC convention in the US? Is it because there
aren't enough fans here in America? I think there should be one here. As I
said in my past postings, when XTC finally releases their album we should
beg your countries music video channels (MTV, VH-1, MuchMusic, etc.) or the
local radio stations to play their stuff. Maybe that will help them get to
#1.

I better go now. Talk to you soon. If any fans want to e-mail me my
address is MFa2707621@aol.com. I love getting e-mails from around the
world. Bye.

Molly-Don't mention it medear. It took me awhile to get used to Chalkhills,
and I suspect it took old-time Chalkhillians QUITE awhile to get used to
me. I will say that Matt Pinfield is the only vj I respect on MTV. He's into
REAL music, not this crap manufactured to make money. I do hope to God,
Buddha, whatever, that if XTC does release any vids, that they are NOT shown
on 12 Angry Viewers. They tore apart Loreena McKennitt's vid for The
Mummer's Dance, which pissed me off. They kept talking about how they
didn't understand the costumes. It's obvious they don't know what the hell a
mummer is!!!! (See what you can learn when you listen to XTC????)

Ben-I refused to watch that debacle known as the Grammies, but I did keep
updated on who DIDN'T win. I turned cartwheels and flipped walkovers when No
Doubt and Hanson went home empty-handed, and screamed with joy when
Radiohead and Bob Dylan won. (And for the record, I think that Soy Bomb guy
was part of the act.)

Subject: Exeter Uni/Chart success etc.

(1) Jonathan Monnickendam asked whether I was sure about the Exeter Uni
concert - the answer, in a word, YES - they played in the usual Great Hall
in Devonshire House, I think it was(is) called. I too remember seeing Elvis
Costello, Ian Dury, the Specials, Showaddywaddy (ahem.... but I gave John
Miles a miss) etc. Sorry you missed out. (Incidentally it's a good job you
put that disclaimer at the bottom of your message - I was already preparing
defamation proceedings against United Bank of Kuwait, before I got to the
end.)
(2) 43 year old John Holden-Dye did some research into the Chart Success of
some of the earlier songs - I don't dispute the Guinness Book of Records at
all, but I'm sure I remember the songs I referred to being Top 10 (even top
3) hits on the BBC chart and I'm sure Drums & Wires got to about No.3 in a
Melody Maker or NME chart (no doubt someone will prove me wrong again). I
even remember reading an interview with Andy Partridge expressing "feigned"
annoyance that Colin Moulding's songs seemed to be getting all the
commercial success/glory cf. Making Plans for Nigel and specifically
Generals and Majors - the interview was pre-Senses Working Overtime. Maybe
Guinness just uses different statistics.
John, as to Oranges and Lemons, I think it's brilliant but "President Kill"
and to a lesser extent "The Loving" take it just outside _my_ favourites.
(4) A while back someone recommended The Levellers '97 record as the best of
last year. As I'm really out of touch with what's what in the pop world, I
bought it and, although it's OK, '97 must have been a pretty dire year if
that's the best it could come up with (I know it's all a question of
individual taste etc.). I also bought The Verve's Urban Hymns which I think
is quite good for what it is- are they cool?
(5) On Celine Dion (and individual taste etc.): I would be extremely
unlikely to spend hard earned cash on any of her offerings except maybe as a
gift for a friend or enemy, but one has to acknowledge that she can sing
pretty well. I bet not many Celine Dion fans could find any redeeming
features about XTC. I'm not sure what point I'm trying to make here except
that maybe in the scheme of things....oh well maybe there is no point..but I
won't delete it anyway.
(6) Thanks again to everyone on this list who emailed me separately to tell
me how to get hold of various missing records/demos. I've already managed to
get the Dukes anthology and the rest is sorted.

The phrase "Aetatis Suae", and and its differently spelled variant on Andy's
pic, ("Aetatis f{s}ue") is commonly found in 17th century writing and
portraiture. The basic translation is "Of or at the age of; aged (a
particular number of years)". The word "aetat" is still used in this
context in certain academic/lofty circles.

If you liked "Yellow Pills," you should get "Yellow Pills II," which has
Brian Stevens' (formerly of the Cavedogs) first solo song, "A Little Bird
Told Me." It's not quite as good as his later album, "Prettier Than You,"
(which featured Dave Gregory) but is still quite catchy. It also has a lot
of other great stuff on it.

definitely heard the XTC/Sugarplastic connection the first time I put in

Jejune", is great too - but very hard to find. Last I looked CD Connection
had some left.)

So... would any Sugarplastic fans who have any *rarities or live tapes*

Friends,

All was well, until I read:

>I give you this info because I sense that I have been around and in
>XTC a Hell of a lot longer than most of you have.

I don't care. The suggestions that we make on this list are only
suggestions. Some reflect the direction we wish the band had gone in.
Some are a little off the wall, but only because we love and respect the
band so much. Up to that point, Bill, your post was truly a pleasurable
read. We're an odd group around here: we get wacky, and we get angry,
but most of all, we burn with optimism's flames. I'm glad to have you on
the list, but please don't automatically assume that you know more than
the rest of us. Because of people like Mitch Friedman, Peter
Fitzpatrick, and David Yazbek, we are blessed (in my opinion) with
proper, up-to-date information about the band we know and love. Let's
not denegrate into slimyness again. That was no fun.

The results of the "Chalkyouth" survey is that there are some *awesome*
under-21's on this list. Some of them, however, don't post...I think
that they should.

Our law and order's never never never never never gonna break down.

Hear hear!

But most of all i would like a decent re-release of the early XTC CD
conversions. They really sound awful!
Now if they were to be completely remastered and repackaged with
proper booklets, I'd buy the whole lot again! After all, this time
the money would end up in XTC's pocket instead of Virgin's...

ah, but that's *Great* Britain - i.e., the largest of the British Isles.
The British Isles technically include, among myriad smaller islands,
Ireland, the Isle of Man, the Channel Islands, the Hebrides, the Orkneys,
the Shetlands, Eel Pie, Wight, the Scillys, Sheppey, and Great Britain (in
decreasing order of importance, of course ;). England is part of Great
Britain is part of the United Kingdom is part of the British Isles. In that
order.

Of course, someone will now tell me that the English are mainly a
Norman/Anglo-Saxon mix, and therefore not British at all...

The entire lyrics of "Another Satellite" have been mentioned, so how about:
Then She Appeared (sun & moon, but not Venus, that has mythological
significance in this case, and art - the reference is to Botticelli's
painting); and That wave (planets).

Re: Nonsuch. The word 'nonesuch', meaning unequalled, is still used
colloquially in some parts of England, although its use is getting rarer.
Andy uses this word in Chalkhills and Children. My guess is that while
trying to decide on a title for the next album (based on a lyric from the
previous), someone pointed out to XTC that there is (or was) a stately
house called "Nonsuch", an acceptable variant spelling of the same word. An
old drawing of Nonsuch castle appears on the cover of the album, BTW. This
may have been the trigger for deciding to use this name for the then-new
album.

>Also, on Andy's portrait, the words "AETATIS JUE 38" appear.

It is latin. Aetatis suae (u was written as v until mediaeval times) means
roughly 'aged', and the numbers indicate the age of the three stoo, erm,
musicians. The "jue" is also suae, the ae dipthong being written in an
alterniative way, and the s being a long lower-case s. You might also note
that the other side of the pictures says "An Dm 1992 KW" - i.e., "in the
year of our Lord 1992" and the initials of the photographer, Kevin
Westenberg.

Evening all,
Someone asked what the word "aetatis" on the Nonsuch cover refers
to, and after some internet searching through Latin dictionaries found that
it means "the time of life" or "phases of life" as in youth, middle age,
senility etc. Thus, "aetatis" followed by the ages of the band members
implies reflection on the time of life they were going through.
How that relates specifically to the album I couldn't say, but it
reveals perhaps yet another glimpse of the Partridge intellect at work
(assuming of course the cover was his idea.)
Incidentally, my source was the Lewis & Short dictionary at The
Perseus Project, Tufts University

And rising to John Relph's defense, I have explored the GBV site, and I
don't think there's any essential bit of information about each band
that can't be found at either site. John has an excellent instinct for
tasteful information design (the Palatino type is a very nice touch),
and plainly knows how not to let graphical vanity and gee-whiz gimmicks
stand between the visitor and the information sought--a major failing of
many web site designers. Chalkhills is quite amazingly comprehensive,
carefully planned, and easy to use. As for your "what could be done if
we all tried" clause, check the "Credits" page at Chalkhills for a very
lengthy list of people, "rapid" to a fault, a great number of them
regular Chalkhills contributors, who've been "trying" their li'l hearts
out.

GBV is a fine site, but no better than Chalkhills in any quantifiable
way that I can discern.

April 18, 1979 - Routes Club, Exeter, UK
October 5, 1979 - Exeter University, Exeter, UK

These are the only two shows in Exeter listed from their whole gigging
career.

Don't feel bad, though: I could _swear_ I saw them at the Cleveland
Agora in the spring of 1981, I have the hernia scars to prove it, but
C'hills sez it could only have been the Capitol Theater on April 11 of
that year. I intend to take this up with our Mr. Partridge when he
accepts *my* dinner invitation which if he doesn't I *will* hold my
breath until I turn blue I do *not* agree that geographical distance is
*any* kind of acceptable excuse just as Simon Knnnnnnnnidgit seems to
think I can drop everything and rush off to Van Diemen's Land or
wherever the hell it is just to cut some herky-jerky pop songs with him
and perhaps meet his preternaturally cute sister (eyebrow-wag,
eyebrow-wag) so I can just *stew* in my panting, green-eyed,
scrotumtightening *jealousy* at all these people who can just *pop* down
to their local fern bar and buy Andy Partridge a US$12 Newcastle Brown
Ale or something.

Everybody got that? You can all just bite me. I'll be over here pouting.

am trying to figure out how I can send one to Mr. Partridge (for
entertainment purposes only). Any suggestions?

Dear Chalkers,

Just to give you an impression of how low one can go:
I have just "patched" my Netscape browser with an XTC splashscreen
and replaced the animated 'N' logo with an animated Andy; strumming
his guitar as the page loads... am i crazy or what?

Before I go a huge heap of thanks to Stacey for the beautiful Nonsvch
cassette. It fits perfectly between the Polish and Gulf bootlegs!
If anyone else wants to get rid of his or hers old XTC "factory-made"
cassette tapes please don't hesitate to send me message privately
I've got lots to trade and also willing to pay cold hard cash.

Hello everyone,

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned before, but I just read
that a vinyl version of Yazbek's Laughing Man is now available
on German label Jarmusic. It contains an additional 7-inch single
with unreleased songs to which Andy Partridge seems to have
contributed.
On a non-XTC-related topic, if anyone has got the lyrics of "If the
Kids are United" by Sham 69 and would be so kind as to send them
my way, please respond to my e-mail address as soon as possible;
thanks very much in advance.
Best wishes to everyone,

Erich

I've been off the mailing list since April last year...

Could someone e-mail a list of recommended listening list, not everything
under the sun but anything that has been generally agreed as an aural
delight.

Chalkhilliards:

Am I the only one not entirely displeased that the new album is only going
to be a single disk? Not that I don't want to hear all the music the guys
can possibly crank out, but Andy's insistence that the various styles of the
songs were too disparate to sit alongside each other always struck me as a
little conservative, a little lacking in daring. I think of the White
Album, my favorite Beatles album after Revolver, and think how dull it would
be had the Beatles put all the "rockin'" songs on one album and all the
"orchestral" tunes on the other. Both disks would be monotonous, a little
boring; the broad clashing of styles is one of the traits that make the
album great. (Revolver itself proves that the same principle applies to
single disks.)

Plus, there's the issue of the marketplace. Single disks are obviously
cheaper to sell and that ought to help the band shift more copies of the
album. Then they can take that money and record the rest of the songs. :)

Oh, one more thing: thank you, Dave Gregory, for nixing that *awful*
proposed album title. "A History of the Middle Ages"? Sounds like it
should be accompanied by a coffee-table book. Y'know, "Firework" still
sounds *awfully* catchy ...

Pop a Tock,

Clipped the following review from Gary Graff, a syndicated reviewer:

Yazbek
"Tock"
(What Are Records?)
4 stars out of 5 (Buy at your leisure)
Best known as a producer (XTC, Spacehog, Tito Puente), David Yazbek has come
up with a second album of delightfully skewed pop, mixing jazz piano chops
with bop sensibilities and a gifted ear for melody and vocal harmonies. He
also has a great wit, singing about a "Schmuck in a Vacuum," a "Tool
Calendar Girl," challenging lovers and ducks. XTC's Andy Partridge guests on
Yazbek's rendition of Partridge's "You Are Here," icing on the cake for an
album rife with breakthrough potential.

Oh yes a delicious CD.

Imagining the final version of River of Orchids as described was a highlight
of an el nino wracked day.

Still wet,
Wes

Been listening to two CDs almost non-stop the past few
days..... Yazbek's new "Tock" and Sean Altman's first
solo CD, "Seandemonium"..... While I've read quite a bit
about Yazbek on Chalkhills the past month, I've seen
nothing about Sean Altman! His solo disk is brilliant....
I've been humming songs like "Marry Me" and "My Parents'
Son" after only a few listens. Point your web browsers to
www.bigsean.com and BUY THIS CD!!!

On another subject: I have ONE, repeat ONE Chalkhills
t-shirt left.... A Forest Green Medium. $20. First come,
first serve! Let me know if you want it.

I would guess that the chances of a vinyl LP of
"Firework" would be about zero.

Vinyl LPs have a far more limited bandwidth and dynamic
range than CDs. If you "cut" a vinyl album using the
same production master for the manufacture of CDs (without
additional filtering of the "low end"), a turntable needle
would fly right out of the groove altogether, or the
groove would have to be so wide that the 16 songs might
not even fit on TWO LPs.

By the sounds of it, XTC certainly do not have the money
to get "Firework" mastered twice, once for CD and once
for vinyl.

Because so much additional filtering is necessary to
master for vinyl, a CD production master is a far better
approximation of the final mix of an album.

This info courtesy of a well-known industry professional
(not me obviously). Sorry.

Chalkers,

I've seen a small change on this site. I've seen a more positive vibe going
on. Maybe it's because of what I said. I know it's frustrating waiting for
the release of Firework, but that doesn't mean we have to bad mouth the guys.

I'm now trying to get my older sister and brother to like XTC. My sister
used to listen to them when she was in high school (which was in the early
80's). I remember her listening to "Senses Working Overtime". But she sort
of lost track of them. I'm also still trying to get my friend to like them.
It's taking a while, but I think she's starting to like them.

I know this might sound weird, but I'm sort of glad the release date has been
bushed back to October, because that's when my birthday is going to be. My
birthday is October 6th. That's a good present to wait for. Don't hate me
because I said that.

You might think I'm a little weird by saying this, but I have this dream
about meeting XTC on my birthday. Boy, that would be a great birthday
present. But that's only a dream that probably won't come true. It's nice to
think about though.

I have a quick question to ask. Has any of the members tried acting? I
somehow picture Andy as Dr. Who. He would be great as the traveling Time
Lord. What do you guys and gals think?

Well, I better go. Bye for now.
