Rasing up Paper And Iron for the boys. Why don't our boys have a limited pre-release of (for the lack of a better name) Firework with special (but cheap) packaging. If they made between 500 and 1000 "First addition" Firework CDs and charged a premium ($30-$35US) the band could earn some money early in the CDs sales to pay production bills. For the special packaging, I would be happy with the standard CD cover singed by all the boys. What would any one else need to be interested in such a deal? 2. A Chalkhills mascot. Perhaps small white pony named "Dusty". Naw didn't think so but I could still see: "Whats that Dusty?! Andy's trapped in the candy mine with Colin and Dave!" (See why I try my hardest not to thing in the morning.) 3 Amanda Nooobody expects a Spanish inquisition. Bye for now. I just wanted to ask a question, what ever happened to the Perdix, the web site all about Andy? That was a great web page. I think there should be a whole web page on him. He's my favorite member of the group. I wish I could've been in NYC to see Mr. P, but I live in Buffalo. It would take me about eight hours to get there, and I don't know anybody there. I wish Andy could come to Buffalo that would be so great to see him. I hope the band goes on tour. I don't think they shouldn't do a stadium tour. I don't want them to end up like U2. They should just stick to small clubs or theaters. If they do tour they should come to Buffalo. I would definitely go see them. Does anybody know if any of the members read Chalkhills? If they do, we shouldn't complain about them. We should show them all the support we can give them. Also, why isn't there an XTC convention in the US? Is it because there aren't enough fans here in America? I think there should be one here. As I said in my past postings, when XTC finally releases their album we should beg your countries music video channels (MTV, VH-1, MuchMusic, etc.) or the local radio stations to play their stuff. More Python soon to come..... Molly-Don't mention it medear. It took me awhile to get used to Chalkhills, and I suspect it took old-time Chalkhillians QUITE awhile to get used to me. I will say that Matt Pinfield is the only vj I respect on MTV. He's into REAL music, not this crap manufactured to make money. I do hope to God, Buddha, whatever, that if XTC does release any vids, that they are NOT shown on 12 Angry Viewers. They tore apart Loreena McKennitt's vid for The Mummer's Dance, which pissed me off. They kept talking about how they didn't understand the costumes. It's obvious they don't know what the hell a mummer is!!!! (See what you can learn when you listen to XTC????) Ben-I refused to watch that debacle known as the Grammies, but I did keep updated on who DIDN'T win. I turned cartwheels and flipped walkovers when No Doubt and Hanson went home empty-handed, and screamed with joy when Radiohead and Bob Dylan won. (And for the record, I think that Soy Bomb guy was part of the act.) I too remember seeing Elvis Costello, Ian Dury, the Specials, Showaddywaddy (ahem.... but I gave John Miles a miss) etc. Sorry you missed out. (Incidentally it's a good job you put that disclaimer at the bottom of your message - I was already preparing defamation proceedings against United Bank of Kuwait, before I got to the end.) (2) 43 year old John Holden-Dye did some research into the Chart Success of some of the earlier songs - I don't dispute the Guinness Book of Records at all, but I'm sure I remember the songs I referred to being Top 10 (even top 3) hits on the BBC chart and I'm sure Drums & Wires got to about No.3 in a Melody Maker or NME chart (no doubt someone will prove me wrong again). I even remember reading an interview with Andy Partridge expressing "feigned" annoyance that Colin Moulding's songs seemed to be getting all the commercial success/glory cf. Making Plans for Nigel and specifically Generals and Majors - the interview was pre-Senses Working Overtime. Maybe Guinness just uses different statistics. John, as to Oranges and Lemons, I think it's brilliant but "President Kill" and to a lesser extent "The Loving" take it just outside _my_ favourites. (4) A while back someone recommended The Levellers '97 record as the best of last year. As I'm really out of touch with what's what in the pop world, I bought it and, although it's OK, '97 must have been a pretty dire year if that's the best it could come up with (I know it's all a question of individual taste etc.). I also bought The Verve's Urban Hymns which I think is quite good for what it is- are they cool? (5) On Celine Dion (and individual taste etc.): I would be extremely unlikely to spend hard earned cash on any of her offerings except maybe as a gift for a friend or enemy, but one has to acknowledge that she can sing pretty well. I bet not many Celine Dion fans could find any redeeming features about XTC. I'm not sure what point I'm trying to make here except that maybe in the scheme of things....oh well maybe there is no point..but I won't delete it anyway. (6) Thanks again to everyone on this list who emailed me separately to tell me how to get hold of various missing records/demos. pic, ("Aetatis f{s}ue") is commonly found in 17th century writing and
portraiture. The basic translation is "Of or at the age of; aged (a
particular number of years)". The word "aetat" is still used in this
context in certain academic/lofty circles.

Re: Nonsuch. The word 'nonesuch', meaning unequalled, is still used colloquially in some parts of England, although its use is getting rarer. Andy uses this word in Chalkhills and Children. My guess is that while trying to decide on a title for the next album (based on a lyric from the previous), someone pointed out to XTC that there is (or was) a stately house called "Nonsuch", an acceptable variant spelling of the same word. An old drawing of Nonsuch castle appears on the cover of the album, BTW. This may have been the trigger for deciding to use this name for the then-new album. >There is text on all three of these portraits. Aetatis suae (u was written as v until mediaeval times) means roughly 'aged', and the numbers indicate the age of the three stoo, erm, musicians. The "jue" is also suae, the ae dipthong being written in an alterniative way, and the s being a long lower-case s. You might also note that the other side of the pictures says "An Dm 1992 KW" - i.e., "in the year of our Lord 1992" and the initials of the photographer, Kevin Westenberg. How that relates specifically to the album I couldn't say, but it reveals perhaps yet another glimpse of the Partridge intellect at work (assuming of course the cover was his idea.) And rising to John Relph's defense, I have explored the GBV site, and I don't think there's any essential bit of information about each band that can't be found at either site. John has an excellent instinct for tasteful information design (the Palatino type is a very nice touch), and plainly knows how not to let graphical vanity and gee-whiz gimmicks stand between the visitor and the information sought--a major failing of many web site designers. Chalkhills is quite amazingly comprehensive, carefully planned, and easy to use. As for your "what could be done if we all tried" clause, check the "Credits" page at Chalkhills for a very lengthy list of people, "rapid" to a fault, a great number of them regular Chalkhills contributors, who've been "trying" their li'l hearts out. Not that I don't want to hear all the music the guys can possibly crank out, but Andy's insistence that the various styles of the songs were too disparate to sit alongside each other always struck me as a little conservative, a little lacking in daring. I think of the White Album, my favorite Beatles album after Revolver, and think how dull it would be had the Beatles put all the "rockin'" songs on one album and all the "orchestral" tunes on the other. Both disks would be monotonous, a little boring; the broad clashing of styles is one of the traits that make the album great. (Revolver itself proves that the same principle applies to single disks.) Plus, there's the issue of the marketplace. Single disks are obviously cheaper to sell and that ought to help the band shift more copies of the album. Then they can take that money and record the rest of the songs. :) Oh, one more thing: thank you, Dave Gregory, for nixing that *awful* proposed album title. "A History of the Middle Ages"? If you "cut" a vinyl album using the same production master for the manufacture of CDs (without additional filtering of the "low end"), a turntable needle would fly right out of the groove altogether, or the groove would have to be so wide that the 16 songs might not even fit on TWO LPs. By the sounds of it, XTC certainly do not have the money to get "Firework" mastered twice, once for CD and once for vinyl. Because so much additional filtering is necessary to master for vinyl, a CD production master is a far better approximation of the final mix of an album. I've seen a more positive vibe going on. Maybe it's because of what I said. I know it's frustrating waiting for the release of Firework, but that doesn't mean we have to bad mouth the guys. I'm now trying to get my older sister and brother to like XTC. My sister used to listen to them when she was in high school (which was in the early 80's). I remember her listening to "Senses Working Overtime". But she sort of lost track of them. I'm also still trying to get my friend to like them. It's taking a while, but I think she's starting to like them. I know this might sound weird, but I'm sort of glad the release date has been bushed back to October, because that's when my birthday is going to be. My birthday is October 6th. That's a good present to wait for. Don't hate me because I said that. You might think I'm a little weird by saying this, but I have this dream about meeting XTC on my birthday. Boy, that would be a great birthday present. But that's only a dream that probably won't come true. It's nice to think about though. I have a quick question to ask. Has any of the members tried acting? I somehow picture Andy as Dr. Who. He would be great as the traveling Time Lord. What do you guys and gals think? Well, I better go. Bye for now.
