Would anyone be willing to pick me up a can of the XTC drink? I'll pay
ya for your time, and for the drink.

I'm down in the dumps with an ear infection. Oh, well -- some say I look
like Andy; now, if my eardrum ruptures (which we hope it won't), I'll be
able to tell my children the "banging my head on the wall" story. Next
time, someone should tell Andy to either sleep on the opposite side (to
let the gross stuff drain the other way), or to sleep with his head on a
heating pad (which will expedite the inevitable).

Wouldn't "Ear Infection" be a great name for a band?

Subject: Osaka, Japan Chalkies Meeting This Week!

Hello!

Been fun reading the many new developments with the band; like D. Gershman,
am looking forward to next Spring (?) when the new (what do we call it now?
CD? album? record? how about...) XTC Masterpiece will be out and ready for
ravenous consumption by all!

Hard to believe its been 20 years since the XTC 3 SINGLE....you know, I
think I saw one of these rare items in a used record shop here in
Osaka...I'm gonna go back and check it out this week! I think it was, like,
6000 yen ($50 bucks) or something like that...I'll keep ya posted!

On Thursday, October 9th, we XTC fans and Chalkies here in Osaka are going
to get together for a little party, so if there are any Chalkies who just
happen to be in the Osaka/Kansai, Japan area this week, be sure and e-mail
either myself (mikewix@japan.co.jp) or Naoyuking
(b9400863@cc.mita.keio.ac.jp) Perhaps someone will bring a camera, digital
or otherwise, and we'll put them on the net (no promises here, but, you
never know!)

A big THANKS goes out to Giles Ward, for the video and XTC Live '79 and '82!

Just Lurking Around (for now),

i thought the lead singer Kurt left a few years ago (after their other
great EP,_A brief history of amazing letdowns_), but apparently he didn't,
as he appeared on all three of the records they've put out after that. so i
won't believe it until i see some kind of proof.

yes, i have no doubt that that is what they were *intended* to invoke, but
they hardly live up to that standard IMO - where JL and GH's solos were
totally on, AP's and DG's are flat and lifeless. again i lay a lot of the
blame on Gus Dudgeon, who makes this song sound more like a weak Beatles
_ripoff_ (c.f. Don Was' watering-down of the eponymous Mommyheads album)
instead of an excellent song in and of itself as well as a worthy tribute.

AMANDA - don't they have Xerox machines in New Orleans (or in Canada, for
that matter)? maybe you should look into that. and furthermore, when are
you going to get it through your head that no one gives a rat's about Crash
Test Dummies? because believe me, we don't.

Harrison "And get that man some sodium bicarbonate" Sherwood - without
resorting to cheesy acronyms, i'll just mention that i greatly enjoyed your
analysis of "Bung-holio", although i still can't abide the actual song.

annoying unless you're going to see someone silly like the Deftones.

It's a bit of a sticky wicket, trying to say one form of music is 'purely'
this or 'purely' that. (Ohhh, I just love putting words in little quotes to
smush them..oh the 'power' of it all.)

Most music has something in it that is from somewhere else...eg...

Jazz has roots in French marching band music

bluegrass is strongly from euro folk music, particularly scots/irish

country has bluegrass which-- see the above

ragtime as the same roots as jazz--see the above

rap is strongly the result of carib DJs who moved to NYC

blues scales can be traced to Africa

disco I won't comment on (the word disco comes from French, though)

Captian Beefheart (he's his on style, right?) borrowed from Howlin' Wolf
(See blues)

--

The same goes for European music.....

My point? I need a bath.

It seems to be three guitar players if you listen closely. Someone once
told me it was Lennon, Harrison and Clapton OR L, H, and McCartney. I
wasn't there (the BASTARDS didn't invite me, I was just sitting around in my
crib that day, doing NOTHING!) so I ain't sure. Whichever the case may be,
I'd lay serious money on it being Lennon who closes the trade-offs. And that
last riff, in my humbop, says it all about rock and roll, and blows away the
other two guys. God I love that last riff. That's the essence of ROCK. That
IS guitar.

OK on that one I'm sure, that's Zappa on the last solo.

As an obsessive TMBG fan, I can tell you without hesitation that it's 'XTC
Vs. Adam Ant'. The CD says it, and they've discussed it in the TMBG Info
Club Newsletter.

As for the song itself, I don't really care for it too much myself...it's
not bad, but I don't think either band mentioned in the song would be
particularly impressed with it. I would've thought a creative band like
TMBG would stick in riffs from songs from both bands as sort of a nod of
the head, but there was nothing like that in there as far as I could tell.

What do you mean? It's a metaphor... he's saying that as in all

Ok... here's mine: It starts out with me finally meeting him, and he
gives me the tour of his house ending with the shed. I get to ask
him all sorts of stupid questions, not unlike I did during the Rifff
chat (Yep! I was the one who asked about the Dukes!), and then we'd
end up jamming for a bit on the guitar/MIDI/etc. Then he'd ask me to
join XTC, as the token incompetent so all the fans would have a place
to direct their hatred, instead of picking on the innocent producers.
Then he'd say that he doesn't mind them picking on Todd. Then I'd
go and record lots of albums with them, until they finally got sick
of my questions (hey, I dreamt that I got to talk to Colin, and I
ended up really pissing him off with my inanities) and the inevitable
would come: they would all get together and throw me out of a moving
lorry, then back over me a few times.

That's how it would go!

If you look on the archive page on the chalkhills site, you'll notice (with
the exception of volume 1) that each September, Mr Relph (bless his soul)
starts a new volume. so, once the end of september 98 rolls around, you

McCartney, Harrison, and Lennon, to be exact, in that order. (Just wanted
to give Paul his due- he was always a rockin' lead guitarist)

>Now playing: Fleetwood Mac, Greatest Hits. Going to see 'em tonight! Ha!

That's an interesting thought. Lindsey Buckingham has always turned ME on
(musically speaking). I just rented "National Lampoon's Vacation" and was
surprised to find that the theme song "Holiday Road" was Lindsey! I
thought,
"no wonder I'm getting into this..." He always had an ear for pop (and cool
guitar licks).

Andy has said "ain't" in songs before. I think that's what distinguishes
pop music from, say, a dissertation. :)

This afternoon I picked up a copy of "Commercial Album" by the Residents,
which features Andy playing and singing on the 38th track, "Margaret
Freeman". I haven't seen anyone talk about this since I've been on (given,
the album has been around since 1980, but it -was- recently re-released),
and I'm just wondering what all of you think...

While I don't particularly think the track stands out above the rest (the
album is fantastic; comes very highly recommended...certainly unlike
anything I've ever heard before), it's still quite good. Andy's vocals
don't appear until near the end of the song, and although they're
unmistakably his, it's very hard to make out what he's saying... :) I
took a look at http://www.residents.com , and the lyrics are quite
interesting. :)

I used CDWorx to get a copy of this on my computer. I've made an MP3 as
well as an 8-bit, mono, 22kHz WAV file...I've offered them to John in case
he'd like to post it on the Chalkhills site... If not, I'd be more than
happy to send it to someone who'd like it on their XTC site.

The MP3 (16-bit, stereo, 44.1kHz) is 987K, and the 8-bit, mono, 22kHz WAV
file is 1.32 megs. Remember, John gets first refusal rights. ;)

TTYL,

-Adam, who should have a copy of the Andy Partridge material from the Hello
Recording Club on CD any day now... :)

Well, not even an incredible simulation....sorry.

Jason, I for one would personally hand Andy your tape if I knew the guy, but
YOU MUST set up you're own publishing company first. I've been instructed
by a pro (and you know who) so I'm passing this along to anyone who writes
songs.

And if I could meet a member of XTC, I'd like to meet Dave. I think I'd be
more comfortable around him for some reason.

By the way, Fleetwood Mac always rocks. Lindsey Buckingham is the reason I
picked up a guitar. Dave Gregory is the reason I put it down and then bow
gracefully, "We're not worthy! We're not worthy!"

Who thought she was a dweeb in HS for listening to the MAC (come on it was
the 80s not the 70s) but now I know the breadth of their influence,
especially among musicians. Anyone else think the world of Danny Kirwin?
 Possibly a pre-Dave Gregory?

Just wanted to let you know that CinemaStar Luxury theaters
(www.CinemaStar.com) in Riverside (Southern California) is playing
Urgh! A music war. If you're not familiar with the movie its a
collection of really cool 80's bands. XTC is the ninth act in the show.
There also a bunch of other great 80's bands like Boingo, Dead
Kennedy's, Devo, etc.... There is a list of bands at
http://www.cyberspike.com/clarke/video2.html
It's a really rare oppourtunity to see Urgh!these days so if you can
post the info for any So. Cal. fans that would be really cool.
The film starts at 10:00 P.M. next Friday and Saturday, October 10 & 11
and its a double feature with Pink Floyd's the Wall which starts
afterwards at midnight.

If you need any info reply to gumby9@pe.net and I'll get back to you.

Bye for now,

Thanks Paul, that must have been the reason I got mixed up. I certainly
wasn't thinking of Quicksilver Messanger Service when I suggested Moorcock's
band was called Quicksilver, QSM are fairly familiar to me due to the late
John Cipollina's work with the Welsh band Man.

Actually Hawkwind were the very first band I saw live, at a Science Fiction
convention when I was about 12 years old. Obviously they didn't make much of
an impression as I couldn't even remember their name when I needed to.

Anyway, the point I was attempting to make was that was Andy P. may have
been influenced by the books of Moorcock, not his music.

Subject: Colin's Hermits and Don Quixote

If anyone does speak to Dave Gregory would they ask him what music would he
use to accompany Borges's 'Pierre Menard & Don Quixote'.

I was listening to CH's strawberry field forever and thought of Jorge Luis
Borges and one of the short stories in his Labrynths collection. It's about
a French guy who decided to rewrite Cervante's Don Quixote and tries to work
out how best to approach it.

As for the turtles, well ! Happy Together was the second LP i had , 'please
please me' being the first, and the first i bought having saved my pocket
money for a couple of months. I still love it ; harmonies, humour and
arrangements . Battle of the Bands is great as well as it includes Surfer
Dan, Elenore, 'Buzzsaw', a killer instrumental, as well as that Gene Clark
song 'you showed me' which gets you back to the Byrds (who don't get much
mention here sadly). Gene Clark , together with Doug Dillard recorded my all
time favourite LP, the Fantastic Expedition of Dillard & Clark, a scorcher.
The Turtles had Ray Davies as producer on one album ; any good?

I should be in Vienna next Wednesday so if anybody has any recommendations
for places to eat/drink i'd appreciate it .

enjoyed the weekend

Jon

What a remarkable notion.

If we pick a quiet song:

"I Only Want To Say" without a doubt. Just imagine Andy singing over
that lonely piano

"then...I was inspired

 now...I'm sad and tired

  listen surely I've exceeded...expectations

tried for three years...seems like ninety..."

If we pick a loud song:

"Judas' Death"

Imagine Andy screaming "My God I saw him!..." and then later, going all
misty and poignant for that brief heartbreaking reprise of "I Don't Know
How To Love Him", his voice cracking wonderfully with the sorrow and
emotion of the moment...

Heck with it, *I'd* like to hear them do the whole album.

BTW IMESHO YDHTAWM: only the *original* opera, featuring Ian Gillan as
Jesus, should be listened to. All later versions are suspect.

A weird and excellent idea. That's IDEA to you chalksters.

ZAPPA CORNER:

...and to John Relph: just so long as you are not hopping into the trunk
of a Gremlin, I will know all is well.

It's just like A BIG ROCK SHOW....

All for knot,

dave at studio seventeen

Until it was mentioned, I don't think I'd ever had a Partridge fantasy
in the way you lot meant it to mean. But having introduced the topic,
this is the best I could do.

Oh hello, Andy, nice to see you've brought Colin n' Dave. Here's 20
quid, now nip out to the offy, will you, and get some beer in. Polly
Harvey and Julian Cope are also here for the evening, so get some for
them whilst you're about it. We're going to watch my favourite videos
and then Julian is going to talk about pagan fertility rites, so hurry
up, mate, I'm gasping. Don't forget the Pringles. And no, you can't
bring Dave with you.

I'll get to that in a minute, but first......

FS-:P TTTTTHHHHHPPPPPPTTTTTT!!!!!!! (Raspberry in your direction.) And a
general plea to DROP THE DUMMYBASHING ALREADY!!!!!

Jason-Well, if you want a copy of my fantasy meeting with Gregsy, you can
ask mygood friend Matt Kaden.....but make sure you can stomach such extremes
of mushiness first.....(this is rated TVM, R, whatever your rating is.)

Fantasy meeting with Andy......browsing through the XTC section in the store
and hear a heavy Swindon accent tell me to "put that God-awful crap down",
whirl around, come face to face with the Great One himself and proceed to
spend an afternoon at his house munching sarnies and drinking Pimms. That's
good enough for me.

Alright, on to my desperate plea...... Saturday night a show aired on PBS
entitled "Sessions At West 54th". The featured artist was Joe Jackson,
playing his new album. I was all excited because I knew Brad Roberts was
going to be on, and since I hvaen't heard anything remotely Dummy-related of
late, I jumped to my VCR. HOWEVER, I got the wrong time and ended up missing
the first half hour of the show, which just happened to include Brad's
performance. Much pillow throwing and primal screaming ensued. So this is
my question... Did any of you tape the show, or did you know anyone who
did? I will give ANYTHING for a copy of this show!!!!!!!

I finally got my stuff from vinyl vendors. I LOVE the dance mixes of "King
For a Day", and the inside picture on Skylarking. I can now see why some
people thought they were dressing like schoolgirls. (Never realised Dave had
such skinny legs either......) I am nowq off to order some more stuff....

Ciao for now,

Jump Jump, go ahead and Jump Jump
if it's what your heart is longing to do....

Hello all believers. Sgt Rock recruited me back in 1980 and I've bought
everything which I can get legally, so can anyone help me out with the
demos? I'm a new recruit to chalkhills.

The strange thing about following XTC all these years is that almost
everyone I know has met Andy Partridge- Dentist's waiting rooms, gigs etc.
You talk about fantasy meetings, the meeting I want involves the boys and a
stage.. Sad but true, but if they ever toured again I would have to be a
nationwide (UK) stalker. And what would I want the set list to be?

Peter Pumpkinhead/ mayor of simpleton/ Grass/ meeting place/ All you pretty
girls/ Great Fire/ Dear God/ Love on a Farmboy's Wages/ Earn Enough For Us/
Towers of London/ Generals and Majors/ Respectable Street/ Chalkhills &
Children/ World Wrapped in Grey/Books are burning /Encores: Nigel/ Senses
working overtime/ the Dissappointed

I'm sure I would include some new songs, but I guess I need to wait for the
demos.
