Dragon started recording in about 1975/76 after coming to Australia from New Zealand. They had a bunch of Top Ten FM radio-friendly hits between 1976 and 1979, but by the time their music reached Austin (about 1983, according to Chris), the group had become a duo - founding brothers Marc (lead vocals and guitar) and Todd (pretty much everything else) Hunter. At this stage, I think the drumming duties were taken by a drum machine for the most part, with the occasional session drummer sitting in. It's possible that Terry was one of these session men, but I find it a wee bit hard to believe. As a slightly depressing aside, Marc Hunter died of throat cancer last month - he was 44. Iain

Here's a brief precis (p'raps the likes of kiwi James Dignan could correct me any inaccuracies): *Formed in New Zealand circa 1975, were a heavy/prog style band on the Vertigo label; released two albums in this vein *Migrated to Australia circa 1977 and had a string of smash hit singles, including at least three number ones - in a more pop-rock style. Were a popular staple on Australian pop TV show "Countdown" *Terry Chambers joined the band around 1983 and participated in one album, "Body and the Beat" as well as numerous singles from the album. A very sartorial-looking Terry is to be spotted in the accompanying promo videos of these singles. He toured extensively with the band during his tenure *I believe (though I'm not certain) that Terry left to spend more time with his young family in Newcastle, New South Wales *Dragon went on to record quite a few more albums after Terry left, including the follow-up to "B&theB", "Dreams of Ordinary Men" which was produced by one Todd Rundgren and released under the moniker Hunter in the US - a fine album it is too. *The band has been dogged by tragedy since its early days. Their first two drummers and their founding keyboardist each died of drug-related causes, while late last month their erstwhile singer, Marc hunter, succumbed to throat cancer after a year-long battle with the disease. I possess a pretty hefty collection of Dragon releases, including all of those on which Terry played. Also, high-quality videos, both promo and live, in hi-fi PAL format. It is average in every particular. This deflating conclusion, based on images taken by the Hubble Space Telescope, finally lays to rest the belief that human beings have a special place in the cosmos. A team led by Dr Simon Goodwin of the University of Sussex says that where we live is the cosmological equivalent of Swindon. It is normal; it is mediocre; it is dull, dull, dull. The ancients believed that the earth lay at the centre of the Universe, with the Sun orbiting around it - a misapprehension corrected by Copernicus and Galileo. Today astronomers believe in the "principle of terrestrial mediocrity", for which Dr Goodwin and colleagues have found new and persuasive evidence. The last traces of pre-Copernican cosmology lingered on in the feeling that even if the Earth, Sun, and solar system were unremarkable, at least they formed part of an unusual galaxy, much larger than those surrounding it. It was hard to prove, since it is not easy to work out how big the Milky Way is, or how far away the neighbouring galaxies are. And if you do not know how far away they are, you cannot estimate their size. Dr Goodwin's team has now made such a calculation, tracking the pulsations of stars that are known to emit light of a certain brightness, which means, they report in the journal Observatory, that they can calculate the distances, and hence the sizes, of 17 galaxies, chosen because they are the same spiral shape as the Milky Way. The average size of these galaxies is 92,000 light years across. And the Milky Way is believed to be 87,000 light years across, which puts it squarely in the middle. "We live in an average galaxy in all respects," admits Dr Martin Hendry of the University of Glasgow, a co-author. Other astronomers think it may be premature to relegate the Milky Way. Dr Sidney van den Bergh of the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory in Victoria, British Columbia, says that dust obscures our view of the other side of the Milky Way, which may be 30 per cent greater than we think. On the other hand, it could be 30 per cent smaller, which would make it even less remarkable. The only consolation is that if life has evolved in such an unexcitingly typical galaxy as the Milky Way, it has probably evolved in plenty of other dull places, too. One day we may meet such people and exchange photographs of the local Arndale Centre. Stephen Varga

The box set seems to me to take advantage of dedicated fans who will buy anything XTC. I suspect most die-hard fans already have Drums & Wireless and the 1980 BBC disc, so essentially they would be buying four discs to get two (plus a pretty box and hopefully a decent booklet). As far as non-dedicated fans, they're not going to touch this. Single live CDs are not the sort of things most people buy unless they are really into the artist -- let alone a 4-CD live box. I hope this is either a very discounted box set, or the "new" material is available somehow separately. Jeff

It was only $11.99 and they seemed to have a ready supply. I've been looking for this for a while. Which leads me to an unanswered question: Yes, I know that Dave Gregory quit XTC, but has he also quit the Dukes? :-) No word on that now, is there? - I finally bought a Shriekback CD (for $4 used), "Big Night Music" and I found it to be modestly enjoyable; not sure I'll become a fan. Question: there are female backgound singers, and one of them is named Sara Partridge (if I remember correctly); any relation to Andy, or does Barry just like being in bands with people named Partridge?? - Somebody recently mentioned Robert Pollard and asked about his music. He is the major domo behind the quite wonderful Guided By Voices who has now gone solo after basically breaking up GBV. I love their stuff but it is not for everyone, mostly because it is too quirky, recorded in extreme lo-fidelity, and many of the songs seem to move along then come to an abrupt halt. However, buried under these layers is great power-pop that sometimes reminds of the Small Faces, sometimes the Who among other noticeable influences. My favorite CD is GBV's "Bee Thousand". I find it ironic in a way to buy a CD by this crew because there is zero in the way of sonic improvement offered by CD technology when measured against their recording "technique" (which usually sounds, as a recent poster noted "like it was recorded on My First Sony"). - Someone else mentioned Cotton Mather's CD called Kon Tiki. Buy it! It's very good and you'll discover something new with each listening. And, speaking of buying unknown releases: - You can find many great "power-pop" releases by virtually unknown bands at a website called Not Lame Records, found at http://www.notlame.com I have nothing to do with this company except that I am a happy customer. The descriptions found for each release sometimes are a bit too over-the-top, but their hearts are in the right place, and it is a dictribution channel for a lot of product that would be far more difficult to find if they didn't exist. - I found the Nicky Holland CD "Sense and Sensuality" also for $4 used, and I have played the 2 songs that Andy co-wrote (Paperchase, and New York Inside My Head) over and over; again, great stuff. I believe that Andy wrote all or almost all of both of these, since I now have 2 Nicky Holland CD's and her writing style is very unlike these 2 songs. That's all for now, folks! Mike

He is the very example I give people when they ask why I hold a grudge against TVT. Sure there were a few magazine ads and MTV played a video a couple (and I do mean a couple) of times and his song "Wendy McDonald" is the only song I know of that has been featured TWICE on CMJ monthly magazine sampler C D's, but beyond that, TVT did absolutely nothing to help promote him. When he failed to sell enough records to meet their quota, they stopped caring. Well, maybe if they had done their JOB by making sure all the record stores had copies, he might have sold a few records, but as it was I NEVER saw it in ANY store. I had to mail-order it from Tower Records. Even my local record stores had trouble ordering it from TVT. They kept delaying the release date. A musical wonder like Spookey doesn't deserve such poor treatment, and neither do XTC. I hope they get treated a lot better! I think many of you will agree that they will live to regret it if they mess with Andy & Collin! I hope TVT appreciates the privilege of having XTC on their label. Veronica

Ah yes, that would be great. But things being as they are between XTC
and EMI/Virgin i don't think we will see this happen for a long time.
A shame really because they early XTC cd conversions are lacking in
every aspect (sound, artwork, liner notes)and we deserve proper
re-issues.
But maybe, if we're very lucky, we will see a re-mastered E.S. on
the MoFi label; just like Skylarking and Oranges & Lemons.
Both these 'gold discs' are excellent examples of how an XTC cd could
and should sound!

Here's exerpts from a couple of reviews of the soundtrack to "The Avengers":
first, Wall of Sound's review (which scored it an 8 out of 10) at

It's spy-movie music for the next generationa batch of coolly detached pop
with techno underpinnings and occasional retro nods....The rest of The
Avengerssome songs from the movie, some "inspired" by itaims for the dance
floor (Utah Saints' "Technowledgy," Merz's tribal "Many Weathers Apart") as
well as the ears, with modern rockers like Dishwalla ("Truth Serum") and the
Verve Pipe ("Blow You Away") flaunting tuneful melodies and catchy
choruses....Nicely diverse within its stylistic parameters, The Avengers
tracks from start to finish like a well-managed case that might even sustain

...Unfortunately, two of the most curious tracks on paper are also two of the
most disappointing: Sinead O'Connor's collaboration with Chicago's Ashtar
Command, "Summer's End," is pretty yet unsatisfyingly fluffy; and the
songwriting collaboration between XTC's Andy Partridge and The Verve Pipe's
Brian Vander Ark, "Blow You Away," as performed by Vander Ark's band, sadly

I went there, eagerly searching for a (preferably vinyl) copy of _Mummer_. Eventually, I found _just_ what I'd been after: an LP copy of this album! For a mere $A7.00, too. And it was in very good condition (even though my "lo-fi" system delivers the sounds to me as a barrage of mid-range)! By the way, I do agree that the "bonus" tracks on the CD edition ruin the experience a bit. So yeah, I'll be sticking to my unadulterated LP of it, and drowning here in Mummer's cauldron quite a few times! Brent

Just returned from New York the other day. Thanks to everyone who e-mailed me with the names of various record stores to check out. It turns out that I remembered or was familiar with almost all of the ones people mentioned but it was good to be reminded. I found lots of interesting trinkets Costello/XTC/TMBG related which I will discuss on those specific lists. Please reply to me personally. How do royalties work for a radio station that broadcast on the internet with a potential audience of 6 billion people? I need to know! XTC question. It's great, if one is unsure whether to buy an album or not, to be able to listen to it. Will XTC have any kind of net- broadcasting? Real Audio somewhere? Do any of the wonderful authors of XTCites ( I just made that up! - okay I know that it shows! ) have room and band width for that sort of thing? What about the TVT web site? Just wondering if XTC are really aware that this is a great and relatively inexpensive form of advertising. I live near Boston and am thrilled that Peter Blegvad is slated to play in the area. I'm wondering what venue he'll be booked into? Feel free to send me more info. on any exact Boston dates and locations, if you have any. This is a must see! I love The Left Banke! What a shame that radio stations play their hit, "Don't Walk Away, Renee" and leave it at that. I have heard at least one other song of theirs and it was very good (and it wasn't "Pretty Ballerina"), so they have at least three good songs. "Renee's" just been overplayed. Fuggin' radio stations, eh? I second the Jam remastered series recommendation on "All Mod Cons" and "Start!" The best haircuts, the sharpest clothes, this is the modern world, baby! By the way, Brian Jonestown Massacre (a TVT artist) is playing an acoustic show at Newbury Comics in Hahvad Square in Cambridge, MA Saturday ay 4:00 PM. I probably will check it out, if I can get anywhere near it. Life is very different, when you're in a crowd. Ah, the weekend's coming. So I can't hang around and be foolish, must do something constructive with the weekend! The last issue of 'hills was the best I've read in ages. Lots of positive news coming out and it's encouraging to find that people on this list have great musical tastes - well, after all they like eks-tee-cee.
