"Am I The Kinda Girl?" still amazes me. As the title track to her
strongest album, if figures prominently in defining that albums' tone - yet
it also screams *Andy*. Like Mark, I really would like to know if that
song was created in an environment of mutual contribution; because it
definitely succeeds in communicating something for/from both parties. If
Andy wrote the entire thing, he channeled Ms. Dennis perfectly.
Cathy Dennis: the Spice Girl for a more mature pallet.......
Here's hoping everyone is fine and dandy. BTW: are there any Japanese
Chalkhillians out there anymore? If so, please write directly to me, off
the list - I'd love to hear any reports on the Puffy tour and who is in
their band this time out. Sorry, about the slight diverge there folks, but
Puffy info is precious (though not exactly pale)...;-)

Hi All, Misty asked about the feelings on "Dear God" among the theists in the group. Let's see if I can keep this reasonably short while still saying everything this great question deserves. Personally, I love the song, and I have a strong, growing, and most excellent relationship with the big G. I came to the song when I was already an xtc fan, and it arrived in the height of my atheist period (not claiming any required order of faith or non-faith here, just the way I've lived). Now that I am a man of God, I still love the song, because it puts forth good, tough questions that must be answered in order clear the way for a better view of the true nature of God. The truth never shys away from the tough questions, and Andy articulated/articulates many of my thoughts and feelings exactly. For a long time the song was the summation of my atheist beliefs, and now for me it's a testament to the power of passion, justice, and the call for truth. I still sing it at the top of my lungs with full passion to this day, loving God AND the song every second, and expanding my experience, vision and understanding, staring those tough questions in the face and seeing the answers more clearly with each listen (won't go into detail on those answers here-- if you want to discuss any aspect of the song/lyrics, feel free to email me privately, unless this turns into a beautifully snowballing list topic). Sound like a paradox to Misty or others? Has anyone here read "Conversations With God" by Neale Donald Walsch yet? It's a three book series (Book 3 coming out in September) that many here would find intriguing and/or incredible (both theists and atheists alike), written by a guy who has had (if the book title was a little murky ;) ) in-depth conversations with God. Book 1 is a good place to start, these books have blown my mind a number of times already. I'm wondering if Andy has heard about these yet (not sure how much the books have been distributed in the UK), I think he would be intrigued, as I think would more than a few xtc fans here (so see, THIS IS xtc related! :) ). If someone here on the lists is in contact with Andy, can they mention these to him, he might thoroughly enjoy them. I see lots of similarities between Andy's most excellent perspective and the books. Books 1 and 2 have been dancing (not burning, although some would like them to) about the top 20 non-fiction in the U.S. for at least over a year now (alright cheeky skeptics, get yer laughs out now over the "non-fiction" bit -- hey, I was an atheist, I can spot those easy setups). Anyway, if you're looking to read a book that is as challenging and fearless and full of love as "Dear God" (or "The Loving," or "Peter Pumpkinhead" or "Wrapped in Grey", or "Paper & Iron" or "Senses" etc.), check out book 1 (then book 2) of the Conversations With God series (just to clarify, these are not atheist books, and yes, it really is God talking. Sound impossible, blasphemus, ridiculous? Go to your bookstore, open up Book 1 to any page, read ten pages, and see if something in there doesn't make you go, "woah, THAT is cool/interesting/thought-provoking/mind-blowing/sensible/logical/ beautiful!"). They had flown out from Nashville courtesy of BMG. I was able to check them out and am happy to report that I was *very* glad I did. Their stuff is extremely tight, upbeat, and squarely in the brit-pop style. They have strong vocal harmonies and seemed to enjoy their time onstage. If you ever get a chance to see them, by all means check 'em out. I think you'll agree it's good stuff.

Hey folks...
Two things, one critical, one hopefully helpful (to round up more
fans that is..)
Firstly, when I've tried to enhance a friendship or what have you and
open someone up to XTC, I usually find something not too middle of the
road. I know that region is probably not considered by some of you as
well-trodden by our heroes, but it is...definitely. Rather than try to
plug into the lowest common dnominator, I always prefer to set them
spinning like a top...flying off the table...wonked silly if you will.
My usual top "sample" tracks from XTC include stuff like
"Jason And the Argonauts"
"Instant Tunes,"
"Battery Brides",
"Millions,"
"The Garden of Earthly Delights",
"Extrovert",
and "Beatown."
I don't pick them because they exemplify XTC's essense of anything, just
because they catch you...and once caught, you ask for more.
Secondly...again...political rhetoric should occur within in the
confines of personal e-mails...not on the discussion board of a rock
band! All the addresses are listed for God's sake...it isn't that hard
to do...! Why should I have to scroll for the sake of a discussion that
should happen elsewhere? I read Chalkhills to see what's cooking with
the band and it's fans...not to be bombarded with POLITICS...as if we
all aren't already!
Finally... Dom and Harrison, shake hands, and lets talk about something
pleasent...like XTC!

Why is this sad? How is this any different than the numerous people
spouting their atheist propaganda? I mean he was answering a question
about his religious views. It's not like he chose to post some huge

There's none that I know of other than fans (like me) of both. I do have a tape of Robyn as guest VJ on MTV introducing the Mayor of Simpleton video as being by "The redoubtable Andy Partridge" (I was sure chuffed!). But he did not have nice things to say about Elvis Costello's "tendency to overwrite" songs. Seems my songwriting heroes don't necessarily hold each other in as high esteem as I do. I did have a fantasy in the late 80's of the Dukes touring with the Egyptians - a post psychedelic juggernaut that never was. Of recent Hitchcock I must confess I can't stand the albums - give me Underwater Moonlight or I Often Dream of Trains any day - but his live solo shows of late have been stunning. The guy is in command of his brain and guitar like no other -you never know what's coming but it's always completely unlike what anyone else would think of doing. Speaking of nothing, here's a bit of self-promotional spam for you tinned meat fans- I've got a box of unsold CD's by my old band The Jennifers - packed with songs heavily influenced by the above mentioned artistes - which are doing nobody any good gathering dust under the bed. But I like to think a major thrust of XTC's music is trying to wake us up lyrically or musically to a vantage point perpendicular to the sleepy mainstream. Oh dear, the 80's are coming back and I've no hair left to spike... There's an etching by the spanish artist Francisco Goya (1746-1828)that when viewed for the first time startles the viewer like a single frame horror movie. It's called "The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters", the picture contains an artist asleep at his drafting board with owls and bats propagating from his subconsciousness. Frankly I found all of the above Interesting and Chalkhills has been as its
