Sorry, I had to get that out of my system. Let me explain.
At work on Monday, we received a call from some colleagues at another
branch inviting us to go drinking with them. They planned to come to a
retsaurant/bar within walking distance of my office, and since we are
fairly friendly they thought they would invite us along. Now we are
regulars at this bar - it's actually a more generic version of the "Hard
Rock Cafe", with bits on the walls, and at least one DJ who occasionally
plays some good stuff. In fact, he has given me the thumbs up before when
I've requested XTC songs, and even been known to play two of them in the
one evening. (Of course there is another DJ who plays "Michael Row The Boat
Ashore" every night - I'm not joking!!!!)
But that's another long, nasty and sordid tale.
But the point of the party this night, was that for the first time, they
were going to have a live band there! Something I've never seen there
before. AZnd I figured that a Japanese band playing covers was better than
just heading straight home, so we readily accepted.
So after work, we strolled down there, met our colleagues and headed into
the bar - only to learn that the band had cancelled - apparently the singer
had a sore throat. Still not too concerned at this stage, as a lot of
Japanese bands tend not to excite me too much. It was at this point that I
saw the sign on the door announcing the diner's apology for the band's
cancellation. Of course it was all in Japanese, but I could read parts of
it, and I could read the English characters "They Might Be Giants". "They
Might Be Giants," I yelped. "Yes," my colleague said, "That's the band
that was supposed to play here tonight. Have you heard of them? Are they
Japanese?"
AAAAAAARRRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH!
I guess my boss at this point realised something was up. She knows I'm an
XTC freak. She asked me if I liked TMBG - I told her that I did. She then
told me that I looked disappointed.
"Let me put this into perspective," I said, "On XTC's second last recording
they used TMBG's drummer."
"Know I'm disappointed," she replied.
I didn't even know they were in Japan. They had one show in Tokyo last
night that I would have gone to see if I'd known in advance - unfortunately
I had to work.
And to John and John wherever you are - Thanks for cancelling.

P.S. - I spoke to my Japanese teacher last night (remember I converted her
last month?) In the last week she has bought English Settlement, Oranges
and Lemons and Skylarking! I'm so proud of her. As for the Tokyo XTC
party, it's on the go. We have about 5 people now (Hi guys) and I've
received notes from about three people who have a Japan connection - Thanks

I just returned from a two week trip to San Diego, and I'm overwhelmed with
all the XTC news I've missed...Peter's interview with Andy, which I knew
about, but didn't *know* about; the "Upsy Daisy" collection, the timeframe
of which I was unaware; some new videos; the convention in Basingstoke (for
any Chalkies who are familiar with the play "Noises Off," which I was in,
this reference is very special to me)...It'll take me a while to sort
through back issues, but it'll be worth it (we just regained our electricity
here at School after being "powerless" for almost 2 days).
If anyone is interested, the gold "Oranges and Lemons" disc is available on
CDNow! (on sale for about $23.00) Also, strangely enough, some rare XTC CDs
have popped up: stuff like "Radios in Motion," "NAC," etc., and an
out-of-print copy of the 3" CD single for "The Loving" is also available. I
don't work for CDNow!, by the way.
Jellyfish sound like XTC. And the XTC references on Blur's "The Great
Escape" (fast becoming a favorite) are many: "I met him in a crowded
room..." ("Charmless Man") Think they're coincidental?
If anyone attends Bates College, Kenyon College, or Bucknell University,
send me an e-mail. These colleges are (as of now) what I've gotten in
to. Yay! (Still waiting on Bowdoin and William & Mary...)

I also have lots of utilities for converting .wav and .au files to mac formats if needed too. Unfortunately, I deleted the digest with info on when the project will air. So, if someone could send me that (hi Steve Schiavo!), I'll see what I can do. Actually, 25% of net users and some 30-40% of Internet content creation/publishing marketshare is pretty damn good for a "niche" platform with only 8%-10% overall consumer marketshare (depending on market). I *work* with Suns, PCs, UNIX et al, but I *love* my Macintosh! If you can, pick up the Mobile Fidelity Oranges & Lemons (I now have an extra copy of the "regular version" available if you want...). TMBG make a more accurate assessment in the song itself (which I also find rather funny - am I to believe that XTC have lost their sense of humour?) Furthermore, Andy used to boast that his early Helium Kidz posters used to describe his own sound as "ant music" years before the phrase resurfaced in the charts. On the subject of inter-band conflict, there's an odd little reference in the new issue of Q which refers to an incident in Newcastle in 1978 when the Angleic Upstarts "confronted XTC after Andy Partridge had ill-advisedly "dissed" them." Turns out it was Martin Newell (and quite what he was doing in my bed, etc...) who is this week's featured poet on the BBC Radio 1 Breakfast Show, hosted by the twin-gods of DJ-dom - Mark and Lard (who have also managed to inject XTC into their show on occasion) The Mummer debate continues apace, I see, and yet again I start to feel part of a minority when it comes to "Human Alchemy" - I just love that song. Real "stupid grin" love. I can see, though, how it falls apart under analysis. The moaning is no doubt supposed to indicate suffering but it has a very European choral, ecclesiatical even, feel and suggests more the Purgatory of Dante's Divine Comedy (spun from the fibres of the faith and heresies of the world about him at the time - alchemy itself being most certainly not a Godly pursuit) than the tribulations of enslaved blacks, lacking as it does any African stylings. Interestingly, the drum rhythm, which does have a pseudo-"tribal" feel, is similar to that of "Shake You Donkey" up, another song which was based around crimes and punishment, and succeeds in conjouring the essence of stumbling feet and the cracking of the lash. The bell-tree during the "An alchemy, human alchemy..." sections neatly suggests gold coins spilling though fingers, as well as hinting, again, at the sting of a whip. One slightly dubious element might be the reggae/ska tint to the track (a feel which harks back, as the later "This World Over" did, to the heavy influence that style of music had on the first couple of albums - reggae being as "open" as Andy's beloved be-bop and jazz when it comes to scatting or riffing freely into new directions) which has a tinge of bad taste about it, in the same way that building a song called "Terrorism" on an Middle-Eastern motif becomes more and more unpleasant the more you think about it. It's nowhere near as jaw-gapingly awful as a current cereal ad being shown over here which depicts a black gospel choir singing the praises of the cornflake, the fact that thousands of black people died in slavery while working for the farmers who developed the industry nicely forgotten by the marketing folk, but it jars a little nonetheless. Maybe it's part of a double-bluff in the song itself (something I could expect the band to pull off) - here's a song about the white exploitation of blacks, and here are some white guys performing it in a style lifted wholesale from "black" music. Even after all that I must say that, though I can see why people might consider such a mixed bag about as appetizing as curried cheese and ice-cream, for me the disparate elements hold together with some wonderful hidden glue and I just *love* to play it loud. I'll apologize in advance to those of you who are already aware of the points that I am about to make. One of the following statements is a fact, and the other is an opinion. "XTC released an album entitled `Skylarking' in 1986." "Skylarking is XTC's finest album." Can anyone honestly say that they have trouble discerning which one is which? When writing about the arts, there are certain quantitative issues that can be cited as facts. These can be interesting, and often will provide insight into the creative process while adding to the overall enjoyment of the work. However, when writing about the qualitative aspects of the arts, there can only be opinion. To preface a statement that by definition has to be an opinion with "in my opinion" is not only redundant, it is a textbook example of patently bad writing. Aren't they still teaching this in English 101? If anyone finds themselves genuinely offended by my contributions to "Chalkhills" maybe they need to ask themselves "why?". We're not discussing the conflict between the Jewish and Palestinian peoples of Israel. We're discussing music. I truly believe that art is in the eyes, ears and minds of the beholder.
