In yesterday's newsletter, someone mentioned the 1989 issue of Rolling
Stone in which the mag listed the top 100 albums of the 80's and put
"Skylarking" at 46.  This reminded me of an obsession I have had for some
time...

I seem to recall that the initial review of Skylarking in Rolling Stone
was lukewarm...perhaps 3 out of 5 stars, and comments about them "playing
it safe" (or some such nonsense...or should it be nonsuch somesense?)
after Andy's little breakdown.  I remember being pretty irritated,
despite the fact that by that point I had already ceased to afford Rolling
Stone any credibility.

Then, about a month or so after the initial review, I seem to recall that
"Skylarking" was re-reviewed (more favorably this time) as part of a sort
of "Recommended Listening" addendum to their regular reviews.

I kept hundreds of old Rolling Stone magazines in my attic in the hope
that one day I could sort through them to discover whether or not that
lukewarm initial review ever existed, or whether it was a product of my
fevered imagination.  But I finally gave up the ghost and chucked them out
a couple months ago.

So anyway...Did it exist?  What was the INITIAL Rolling Stone
review like (not the one in the recommended listening box)? Someone in the
chalkhillian community MUST know of it, or have access to Rolling Stone
mags of that vintage.

Thanks for indulging my obsession.

Hi All,
just a few lines to let you all know that the interview with Andy was a
great success.
The project we were interviewing him for will be announced here on
Chalkhills in the very near future - I'm just waiting for the go ahead
to let you all know about it.

A few quick bits of information
- he looked really healthy and happy
- Andy was perfectly happy to answer a bunch of questions submitted by
you all (as it happens a good deal of the questions were answered during
the "main" interview. I picked a few specific questions to ask at the
end)

The highlight for me was having all my CD covers signed and defaced, got
a few nice photos. We went into the hallowed place that is "The
Shed"....
I've got loads of technical info. for all you recording and musician
type people, along with some photographs & video.
Heard some demos that I haven't heard before.

Also saw the mockup for "Upsy Daisy" which is due for US release soon.

Heard some more specifics about future Virgin releases.(both CD and
Video)

Got some other tidbits that will resolve a few of the heated and not so
heated discussions that we've had on Chalkhills recently.

Soon as I catch up with myself I'll send you all the info that I can.

Thanks to everyone for the questions - they went down really well with
both Andy and the main interviewer, in fact we got some great soundbites
from him as a result of your questions.

This doesn't always produce disasters though, Todd Rundgren really plastered
Skylarking with his control freak-ness but I think it came out the other end
as a very interesting (and slick) structure.

Admittedly, while listening to Nonsuch as I type I do see what you mean - I
suspect this is what Andy (and the others ? maybe, maybe not) wants though,
what with his Harold Budd stuff and the old "dub experiments" I reckon deep
down our Andy is a bit of a control freak himself. Discuss.

Natalie-Yeah, no Dave in the Perdix, I saw. :( But maybe when I get enough
time I can set up my own page. (I used to be a member of the BRAS...Brad
Roberts Appreciation Society....maybe I can set up....what's a good
acronym...  GAS! Gregsy Appreciation Society.....oh but I do kill me.)

Boy am I glad I finally changed my personal name. So I am NOT AMANDA
anymore, you can just shorten it to DGIG...or I'll go and change it again to
GREGSY IS GOD so it'll just be GIG. Everyone on the David Duchovny mailing
list refers to me as DAVE GREGORY IS GOD, though, so I'm going to change it
again. (I also played a few tricks on my friend Mark Strijbos and changed it
only when I mailed to him...MARK IS A DORK, stuff like that. But I do ramble
about nothing, don't I?)

Jeff-I have zero pain tolerance, so a tattoo is OUT OF THE QUESTION! Funny
thing is, I've always wanted one. I'll just take a nitrous oxide tank with me
to put me to sleep....but if I ever got an XTC-related tattoo it would have
to be the This World Over single sleeve. The horse is a little too plain.

Yes, yes!  It's quite fucked-up, as you say.  After all this time
I'm still not sure where the downbeat is.  I love playing that
bass part- actually I love playing most of "Nonsuch" on bass.
Colin has all these neat little patterns everywhere.

I remember someone on the list saying something about how "Nonsuch"
is one of the most important records of the century.  He never
explained himself, however.

I sent a tape down to my (hopefully!) future girlfriend in Pennsylvania
which contained "Your Dictionary" (this was in an effort to get her to break
up with her then-boyfriend and take me on instead.) Anyway, she got really
drunk one night, called him up, and, with about 5 friends, played (and sang)
the song onto his answering machine. (A woman after my heart!)

I think "Omnibus" is the best song on Nonsuch. So there. I love the bit at
the end where they're doing the "Omnibus-ssssss" with Dave's acoustic in the
background. Great.

I had a dream last night that XTC came to perform at my school. Wouldn't
that be weird? Yeah. I don't remember what songs they played (in my dream),
but here's a question: if you could have Andy, Colin and Dave perform *one*
song for you, what would it be? (For me, the choice is obvious: "All of a
Sudden (It's Too Late).")

As to videos: I think the funniest is "Mayor of Simpleton," the most
original is "All of a Sudden" (which is also very "ahead of its time,"
IMHO), and the best is "The Disappointed." (Notice I didn't put the worst
'cos someone'll flame me.)

I'm on vacation for three weeks, starting Saturday. If anyone is going to be
in So. California, e-mail me. I'll be in La Jolla for two weeks.

Dear AMANDAhillians,

I was shocked when i was reading the last issue of Chalkhills to see that
AMANDA had not wrote a thing when i came across a post from "DAVE GREGORY IS
GOD <ACOEA@jazz.ucc.uno.edu>". Well you almost fooled this lurker, but you
did not win. I am the type of lurker who scans though Chalkhills to find
posts from AMANDA to see what kind of trouble she can get into, kind of like
a well written comedy satire. Just thoght I would emerge from the XTC
shadows and bring that up.

Also contrary to what Andy believes i happen to think Ebow the letter is a
great song paired with a fabulous video. I do agree with a few of our
chalkhillians that it was a bad selection for a first single. Too different
from REM's previous music.

First off, let me say to Don...lighten up!  What the heck is wrong with
your wife hearing all those different influences in XTC?

Now, as far as Beatles' solo.  I express some concern that you think it's
all chaff.  Not so.  There are brilliant bright spots.  Take McCartney's
first solo album where he plays all the instruments, and surprisingly "Tug
of War" has some great tunes.  Check out Lennon's "Plastic Ono Band" and
"Walls and Bridges".  Don't forget George's "All Things Must Pass."  You can
forget Mr. Starkey, I can't say much for him 'cept I like "It Don't Come
Easy."

Now before you organize your Beach Boys Hate Club take a second
look. Disclaimer: I am not a Beach Boys fan!  And for the most part I hate
surfer music.  I only care to own one Beach Boy's CD  - "Pet Sounds"
(Brian Wilson's labor of love).  I think you will find some of the most
beautiful melodies and harmonies (and thoughtful lyrics) ever recorded
by a pop group.  For me, when I hear XTC casting spells like "Pale and
Precious", "Season Cycle", "Chalkhills and Children" and "Wrapped in
Gray", to name a few, I say thank God for Brian Wilson's "Pet Sounds".
And that's not a bad thing.

So, before you go slinking to the floor again, remember...your wife has a
pretty good ear.  And XTC are a warehouse of music history, and what
the heck is wrong with that?

I have _Mad Cows & Englishmen_ and it's one of the Captain's better
recent releases.  Not as good as _The Universe of Geoffrey Brown_ but

_Tangled_ is definitely excellent, albeit difficult to find in the
U.S.  Recommended for fans of XTC and Robert Wegmann.  (I'm still
looking for copies of Mr. Wegmann's albums _Poisoned Paradise_ and
_Dangerous Curves_, if you, gentle reader, can find me either one I'll
be in your debt!)

After quite a few listenings, I find that _K_ doesn't hold up.  A few

I've got both of their records and my wife and I both like these
records a lot, especially their latest, _No Sacred Cow_.
Stylistically diverse, funny lyrics, and basically nice records.  I
highly recommend _No Sacred Cow_.

and "a *boy* thing.  Boy Howdy!  I never laughed so hard!

Don told us about his wife's impressions-

Perter Pumkin head sounding like Paul McCartney- never got that
impression.  Thats interesting though.  BUT on hearing the demos
(yummy!), the first thing that popped into my head on hearing "I'd
Like That" was....Paul McCartney!  That really made me do a double
take with the ears.

Senses Working Overtime...Cure.  Er?  Andy doesn't whine and moan!!!
Tell the missus this.

Count me in there. "Yacht Dance" is enough to justify XTC's existence all by
itself. That wonderful guitar part, those drums, Andy's singing on the

Re: the Tears for Fears similarity, listen to KfaD. Egad, that still scares
me. I don't hear nearly as much of TfF in C&C, though.

Here's where you lost me. Pale and Precious is the most blatant Beach Boys
ripoff of all time. (Obviously not a bad thing, of course -- that's what it
was written for!) Even I, child of the 80's, was able to pick that one out
all by myself. :) The stuff on Chips *does* sound derivative -- because it
*is.* I'd worry more about SWOT he Cure, myself.

Hmmm. Perhaps. There is definitely some new stuff on there: Miniature Sun
comes immediately to mind. However, to me at least, most of it comes off as
rather derivative. See my comment on KfaD.

Having already given into temptation, I have heard the new demos (though I'm
purposely not listening to them anymore...) and I would be willing to state,
on the record, that the next album could very well be English Settlement #2.
The stuff is truly awesome.

Sorry 'bout that. At least to me, though, Andy's comments about E-Bow really
came off as an "Oh, we're so much better than them" arrogant stance...

BTW, thanks to Phil's wonderful Chalkhills shirts, I've managed to get
myself noticed at least three times, with the conversations always taking
exactly the same form:

Them: Hey, is that an XTC shirt?
Me: Yeah.
Them: Yeah, I used to like their stuff. They broke up, didn't they?
Me: No, they just had some problems with their record company.
Them: Oh. I remember they did that "Dear God" song.
Me: <urk>

What was really strange was when I had the same conversation (minus "Dear
God" mention) with someone while I was wearing my TMBG shirt. Whoa.

Hello to everyone again. Nope, no Partridge report to report this time but I
thought I'd share a few tidbits of recollection and some really silly
nonsense
that Andy told me about recently.

First of all, I totally agree with Keith Hanlon about the rhythm groove in
Omnibus being just plain weird but great. I think the album version is an
improvement over the demo version (which I also love). Andy told me that
when they were rehearsing Omnibus, right before recording Nonsuch, Dave
Mattacks had an absolutely impossible time trying to work out his drum
part. He just couldn't grasp the fact that the first beat in each measure
required him to not play anything (or something to that effect -- I'm no
musician so forgive me).  They almost couldn't record the song because he
was so frustrated with being unable to figure out how to play it and start
on time, etc. So if master drummer Dave Mattacks had trouble with it, it
must be pretty damn weird.

On the tattoo subject . . . a very big XTC fan who owns the record store
around the corner from me told me that he once came really close to getting
a tattoo of the little yellow bird pictured on the Skylarking cover. He
thought it was a perfect representation of the music he loved and the idea
of taking it easy and doing things in a lighthearted way.

Andy will probably be distressed if he found out I shared this next stuff
with you because it's just plain ridiculous and might be offensive to the
Jewish members out there. If it's any consolation, I found this really funny
and I'm Jewish so I assume it's ok to let it out. When recording Nonsuch the
band would often sit around for hours at a time and come up with all sorts
of nonsense to amuse themselves. At one point they started to compile a list
of song and album titles for The Jewish Beatles:

Someone asked in the last Chalkhills whether we though XTC were
a *boy* band, i.e. a mainly male audience. In response I'd like
to say that sometimes I feel that XTC are purely a me band. I
seem to be the only person I know among people my age (i'm in my
early 20's and I live in Britain) who likes XTC. When I tell
people about my enthusiasm for the band the response is usually
"Who?" or some combination of amazement and disgust. I think XTC
can be equally appealing to both men and women, it's getting
people to listen to them in the first place and convincing them
how great they are which is difficult. Anyway, I hope that the
release of new XTC material this year will trigger some sort of
XTC revival. Perhaps they might get another top 10 hit in the
UK after all these years (this is probably wishful thinking, but
you never know.)
Sorry if I'm rambling on here, but it's just some of my thoughts.

Hi Chalksters,

Ken (?) asked if there was any connection between the different
parts of the Homo Safari Series...

No, the only connection is that they are all instrumentals.
The original Homo Safari on the LBATH single was not sub-titled Part
One because at that time there was no series (planned)

Over the years some more instrumentals were released haphazardly on

To suggest some connection that wasn't there at all they were all
subtitled Part n of the Homo Safari Series.

BTW: Parts 5 & 6 ( Frost Circus and Procession Towards Learning Land)
were recorded & released before Part 4 - it was skipped by accident !

Well, here it is.  Communication from Richard Pedretti-Allen!  You remember
me the chucklehead who seemingly left town with everyone's hopes for
entertainment.  I want to apologize to everyone involved or concerned for
taking so long.

The story (short version) is first, the motor on my hard drive quit and I
lost all the data (exit email and archive your data NOW!), second, I was
unable to send email for awhile due to the transition to another mail
application and third, the tapes were done but not to my satisfaction and I
have been haggling with the dubber to redo them.

The problem resulted when they sent me a proof copy that was fine and
followed that up with 200 dubs that included the reference tone (a very loud
and obnoxious way to start the tape, which also bled through to the other
side of the tape).  They claim that 1) they didn't need the tone, 2) didn't
expect to find it there and 3) so, I got what they promised (regardless of
the fact that the proof cassette didn't have the tone).  This is what I get
for trying to swing a deal by calling in some favors.  I have a friend who
is caught in the middle of this and things are not real fun right now.
Additionally, I can't afford to eat the dubbing cost and have them redone
elsewhere (and passing an additional cost on to buyers would price it out of
the logical range).  I am left at the mercy of the dubber and his schedule.

But hey It's cheaper than college

That's the short version.

The long version of this story would give me Carpal Tunnel Syndrome to type
out in full detail.  In any event, this situation is precisely why I didn't
want to take anyones money up front.

Through all of this I have learned more than I wanted to know.  Please be
patient.  I am trying and I won't make the same mistakes again (if you
permit there to be a next time).

All the details about purchasing the tape will come posted by March 17.

Hi everyone,
it's the first time I write after having read a lot, but a funny remark by a
boy living in Taiwan spurred me to do so: he wrote XTC tend to be a 'male
thing'.
Well for me it was the opposite: I love them and my former boyfriend just
listened to them because he wanted to be nice to me.
Another thing: in Italy, they've just issued a cd on '80's rock in the UK'.
XTC are present with GENERALS AND MAJORS and THE TOWER OF LONDON. I have
been wondering why thay've chosen 2 songs from the same album, I admit nice
ones. But I suppose the meaning was to show the best production of various
bands (Roxy Music, Japan, Teardrop Explodes, Tears for Fear, Culture Club,
etc.) representing the 80's. What I mean is that probably you don't get many
new XTC fans with those 2 songs: why not use The fly upon the wall or Senses
working overtime?

to my understanding, xtc did each of the six songs in the homo safari
series quite independently from each other.  some have been placed as "B"
sides on assorted releases, and i always had a heck of a time finding them
this way.
but when i found the import cd single of "dear god," it also included the
entire six-song series, which include:

1. homo safari
2. bushman president
3. egyptian solution
4. mantis on parole
5. frost circus
6. procession towards learning land

maybe you can find this single??  if not, i'm sure one of us chalkhills
folks can help you out w/ a dub...   :)

my cd should be available the end of this month. thanks to all who've
written!!

        Geggy Tah has just released a new album, don't know the name, new
single is "The Battle of Who Could Care Less".   As to "Your Woman" it's
done by a group called White Town. Album is _Women in Technology_.

  Figured the list would find this funny; a local talk show in my area
reported the anecdote that a certain pub in Swindon (yes, XTC's
Swindon) had a karaoke contest in which an uncountable number of
inebriated and tone-deaf patrons went up and bellowed Barry Manilow's "I
Write The Songs" one after the other. (Yeah, some of us know Bruce
Johnston of The Beach Boys wrote it. May he rot for that.) A very annoyed
neighbor called the police, and the the pub was written up for at least
five noise pollution violations, which apparently used up their quota of
allowable violations. This resulted in the city revoking their license to
operate.
  Naturally, our boys had the good taste to not be there that night. I hope.

This band's talent is so damned good, Andy even wanted to work
with them, right?  Only now, everywhere I've looked, I've been
met with (disc) "no longer made or available."  WHY IS THIS?!?!?!?
This shit simply ain't fair, I tell ya'!  Anytime there's halfway
decent music to listen to out of all the crap that's being
pushed today, this amazing stuff by Duffy and Co. is virtually
impossible to obtain!  This downright pisses me off!  Can
ANYBODY offer me some comfort or point me in the right
direction so that I might possibly somehow get these discs
in my music collection?  There's GOT to be a way!!!

I actually came across The Lilac Time's 2nd album, "Paradise
Circus" at a used book store in Raleigh, NC this past weekend
and grabbed it up so fast it put "BLISTERS ON MY FINGERS!!!"
This CD is so wonderful and everytime I listen to it, I just
feel good all over.  (Jesus, how "teenage" can one person sound!
Can't help it though!  This disc is GOOD!!!)  Now, I'm itching
for more of this great band's music.  Please help me out...anybody!

I guess you can probably deduce by now that I'M DESPERATE!!!!!!!!

I'll be waiting for some word(s) of comfort from my fellow
residents of the Hill!  (I'm depending on all of you here!)

Hi Chalkers,

I can't receive it myself, but I saw VH-1 Europe has a program 'Beat Club
70s' where XTC is scheduled a few times this week.
They also will air a show called 'Live at the Beat Club Punk Special', also
with XTC (among Sex Pistols and the Strangers).

If you want more info about the times when these programs are planned,
contact me. Maybe we can negotiate at the same time about swapping
videotapes :)

Just a little one. Last week I contrived to insert my finger into the huge
spring that drives my computer, causing the klink glands to shed nurfle
fluid. This led to severe crinulation of the humpergatory Gruber shaft. The
practical result of this is that I lost my email file. I know I was in
mid-discussion with a couple of Chalkies as regards trading, but I no longer
have the mail addresses of these people, and nor do I have their want lists.
The poor antipodean Duffy fan who mailed me before Christmas, and who must
be feeling uncommonly neglected, is especially encouraged to get back in
touch, as is the chap who recently enquired about "Lost in Music".

Apologies to one and all, but, you see, I'm something of a f*ckwit.

Interesting XTC musings....I'm on an automated David Duhovny mailing list
(You know, Fox Mulder, the X-Files????) and someone wrote in and asked
"Who;s Dave Gregory?" So I said "he's the guitarist for this British band,
XTC." and two girls wrote in saying they loved XTC. (Although they only
mentioned Dear God, so I doubt they really know much more about them.)
