Takeaway/The Lure of Salvage by Andy Partridge makes up tracks 6 - 16 of
the (rather heavy-going, IMHO) Explode Together CD.

I'd certainly leave this one 'til last for your complete XTC collection.

By the way, is anyone else on this list as keen as me to see Shriekback's
"Tench" made available on CD?

Hello Chalkhill People,

I have been wanting to write earlier but have been upgrading
my computers. The last three posts have been much more interesting(at
least for my twisted brain).

>What about the parallel Major 9 chords in Miniature Sun. And what about
the parallel Maj9#11 voicings in the bridge of Rook? (not to mention the
brilliant 9/8 alternating hand piano part in that same section.)
And then there is their use of "polyrhythm" such as the 3
against 4 comping pattern of one guitar in Burning with Optimism's
Flames, or the bizarre melody phrasing in Miniature Sun which sounds like
quarter note quintuplets over a swing four or pealing bells in an English
vllage.<
OW! UU! OH! YEA!
I have been waiting for stuff like this for a long time.
This sure beats kicking that carcass from one end of the universe to
the other.
>Gregory has some "formal" theory training, but the two songwriters
are, to the best of my knowledge, self-taught. Andy is a confessed
Primitive; I get the impression that he has studiously avoided
learning in order to tap into raw inspiration.<
I used to think this myself but Andy's music is not simple. The
music is very profound in it's ability to convey messages. I wonder if
Andy is writing purely from feeling and the complexity of how he wants to
musically express this feeling leads to the awsome chord progressions we
hear? A good question for AP at the MSN show?

>It is true that Andy's lyrics
are far more complex and interesting than any that Brian wrote on his own,
but in terms of musical complexity, Brian takes a back seat to no one.
XTC does ride shotgun a lot, however.<
Well Said! Does anybody who has heard AP's demo "I Can't Own Her"
think that this sounds like "Surf's Up"? I still love the song
regardless.(both of them)

>And on a non-XTC, yet still musical note....am I the only one who wished
that the Spice Girls and Hanson would drop off the face of the Earth?<
If I hear Hanson one more time I'm going to hurl! I don't want to stray
too far from the hill but who wrote the music for the latest Spice Girls
tune that's being played on MTV? It sounds Stevie Wonderish.
I'm glad to see that there was a mention for Bootsy on the bass. Speaking
of witch our bass player went back home to Detroit. A litl problem with
female rejection. So if there are any bass players out there in the
Houston area looking for a band who does all original material please
e-mail me!

 Greeting people of Chalk:

Allow me to introduce myself, my name is Kelly - and
I am a lurker. A lurker about to post his first
message no less. What do you suppose it would be that
would suck me right out of silence? A couple of
things...
First of all, I would like to applaude John for
putting a stop to the nonsense. Enough said.
Secondly, the reason I, and I suspect others, have
remained in lurk-dom is because of the fireworks as of
late - not fear of snobbery or intimidation. I'll be
taking a collection at the end of this sermon to help
rebuild all the Pg Dwn keys for "the disappointed".

I would like to throw a couple of (hopefully)
positive suggestions into the ring:
1.If people were to make an effort to highlight the
topics they enjoy on Chalkhills, rather than to
mudsling at individuals - it would definately be a
better place.
For example, I have really enjoyed hearing about
other bands that appeal to my fellow XTC fans. Hearing
them helps me fill this too-long gap between albums
from "the boys". Believe me, I am just as restless as
you - but it is not a good enough reason to turn on
each other like rats in a cage. I am also enjoying the
musical breakdown by the more-musically inclined among
you; I can't relate but it is informative.
2. Amanda is right - we could stand to be a little
more tolerant of the various opinions/etc. I know
this doesn't apply to everyone, but the noise is
getting kind of loud... It really isn't such a hard
pill to swallow, is it? Group dynamics dictate that
the opinions and topics will be w-i-d-e.
Sorry Amanda, I just have to mention you (I know I am
going to regret getting involved here). Before you
get your back up - know that this is just a gentle
nudge from one of the family members - relax okay? :^)
You are obviously knowledgeable and enthusiastic about
the BFS, but you would likely say a lot more by saying
a little less. I just know I should have taken that
off-line... No aggression or public humiliation
intended.

I have a sad tale to tell. I was at my favorite
alternative bar recently, enjoying too many Sambucas
and the happy sounds of D&W while waiting for the
band... The band comes on and the lead guitarist was
wearing a Skylarking shirt. I was ready to buy this
guy about 50 of his favorite drinks! I slithered
across the floor after the set (did I mention just how
MANY Sambucas I was enjoying?) and very
enthusiastically asked him if he was a fan. Dumb
question right? Wrong. He said "NO, I just liked the
shirt".
I know you all share my pain.

Sooo, just how many of us Chalkies are there? I
haven't seen any numbers anywhere...

Best news : there will almost certainly be a repeat chat in the fall
(autumn to us here in Europe)

A splendid evenings entertainment.

Andy was really funny and the Chalkhillians (who pretty much ran the
show) had some great questions.

Yes - there will be an archive transcript of the chat made available.

I would have to agree here. I was just pointing out that how *well* you
think MW accomplishes what it sets out to do is irrelevant to *what* it does

perspective), which is really fairly obvious on a detailed reading of the

Sigh.... OK, here's what happened. We laid down some tracks for 'day in
day out' using some, er, borrowed equipment. In other words, we were
using somebody's 4-track and room without their explicit knowledge. Due
to our busy schedules, Paul and I kind of let time pass by and then,
before we knew it, the CC deadline had arrived. We went back into 'our
studio' to put the whole thing together and discovered that all of the
important equipment was gone! We decided that we'd put too much effort
into it to miss this opportunity, so we, um, just happened to have a boom
box with an external microphone there, and, well, we cranked it out into
that. I don't think anyone can say we over produced the track....

I'm enjoying CC '96 immensely. We'll be back for CC '97, and we may even
buy a microphone this time!

Well, this will be my last post for a while. I am off to England in just 4
hours now. This has been an excellent mailing list to be a part of and I
look forward to re-subscribing in the future when I return to the states.
Who knows, maybe we'll get Internet access in the UK in which case I'll be
back sooner.

Some last thoughts and comments:

1. The tribute tape is excellent! I won't list my personal favorites here,
just want to applaud all of the effort involved from Richard and all
contributors.

2. The chat today with Andy was quite cool. Hopefully it will be archived
for those who couldn't be there. I asked Andy to discuss his comments on
Ebow the Letter and REM...he RIPPED the song - that dirty little... ;^)

3. Did anyone else have a nightmare of an experience setting up (and using)
MSN? It took like 4 hours to install (I had to sit there and answer
questions the whole time), plus ALL KINDS of other problems. Well worth it
though, even though I didn't get to see everything b/c I could not access
the website a second time due to another error message.

4. I want to publicly thank fellow chalkster Cheryl for going out of her
way to help ensure that our move to England goes as smoothly as possible.
Thank you!!]

Greetings, Salutations, etc.

I've finally found a few moments to put in my $.02 worth on the tape. Wow,
do I ever love Randy Christopher's version of Sacrificial Bonfire! I find
myself going back and replaying every time it comes up.

On a similar note, I usually skip It's Nearly Africa when I listen to
English Settlement, but I really like Eric Day's version. (and my song's
right after it...a huge contrast in sound quality!) Everybody else did a
great job and it's a lot of fun to listen to. Something to tide us over for
a while, I guess...

Oh, I almost forgot...My wife always makes me go back and play Dear God.
She says it sounds like it should be included in the next revival of
"Godspell." (What can I say, the chick digs show tunes...)(Yes, I like it
too)

Oops, look at the time...I have to get to work!

Think happy thoughts about a new record deal...

On my way home from work on Thursday 12th June, I was listening to my local
radio staion (2CR FM) which broadcasts around the Bournemouth area of
England.

On the gig guide, they mentioned a band was having a gig down a local pub
called the Coventry Arms which is in the district of Corfe Mullen, near
Poole in Dorset.

The name of the band was Drums and Wires. Convinced there was a real XTC
connection I phoned the pub (01258 857284) to ask them about the band. They
told me they knew the group members and they played there quite regularly
and they were very good.

Now I'm sure this band must have gigged in other towns around England. Can
anyone else shed any more light on this group?

Subject: XTC in Atlanta?

Folxtc,

On the 21st, we are having the first Atlanta Chalkhills Party. Pete is
hosting. His house is perfect for a party. He has his living room set
up as a rehearsal studio. He has a lovely swimming pool. Atlanta's own
psychedelic "Orange Hat", featuring Chalkhills contributor Jason "Buffy"
NeSmith will be performing some XTC music as well as their own brand of
quirky psychedelic pop. I saw these guys live, and they are great.
Pete's acid jazz band will be performing, and seeing them is a real
treat. There will also be an opportunity for some open jamming, and
I'll probably pick up the bass for a song or two.

JD SMX is celebrating his 41st birthday on the same day in Tucson
Arizona. We'll be calling him up to wish him a Happy Birthday, and
we're going to simultaneously play an XTC record, perhaps even have a
sing-a-long.

I'd like to take this opportunity to invite XTC to our party. Andy,
Colin, and Dave? We'll provide the ale, the food and a dozen or so
adoring fans. I don't think Terry can make it, but there will be a
number of drummers there that know your material. We'll even pass
around the hat and raise a few quid for your efforts.
While we can't provide transportation, I know we can scare up a few
sleeping bags.

Alternatively, you could call us, (e-mail Pete for his number at
pete_srd@mindspring.com) and we'll all confess our love and admiration
for you, and I promise, no one will complain about the lack of a new
album.

And now for something completely different:

With all due respect granted to our dear Cheryl, I feel that many have
missed the boat on "My Weapon". I don't get "rape" out of that song at
all. What I get is that Barry's girl is INTO the whole thing. They are
one twisted couple, her baiting him, teasing him, maybe even loathing
him, and him saving it all up for the bedroom. I think the song is
tongue in cheeky, not meant as a rape song at all.

XTCULATER,

Stormy Monday

Hi gang,

The Rifff chat was chaotic and fun, and quite a few Chalkies managed to make
it to the show. A full transcript will be made available on the Rifff web
page very soon - (http://rifff.msn.com).

Andy seemed to enjoy it, but I'm sure it wasn't as satifying for him as a
proper interview/chat where he can really let his mind run riot - to satisty
this urge he introduced a short interlude, "10 things you may not know about
Mr. Andy"

And here they are;

1. One of my favorite all time films was a massive flop, a musical,
but huge in France. It is the 1953 film: The 5 Frozen Fingers of
    Dr. T.

2. I do a pretty good impression of Hans Conreid who supplied the
    voice of Disney's Captain Hook.

3. I own a piss-pot which I keep under my bed.

4. I have been planning on and off for the last year an animated TV
series along the lines of the Thunderbirds but based in the past, in a
    non existant Victorian time.

5. Until very recently I only owned 1 pair of shoes; wore them every
day for 10 years and they never needed repair. An especially paid
(pair?) of Doc Martens. I found them in a shop in 1988, they were
fantastic. When I tried to get another pair, called British Hikers,
    they don't make them anymore.

6. Um. My current girlfriend is, bizarre concidence, the woman I
wrote "Another Satellite" and "Seagulls Screaming" for. Her father
wrote the screen play for Saturday Night Fever. She has a one word
    line.

7. People think I am whiter than white but 2 generations ago, there
is black blood in my history.

8. A relative of mine used to pimp for royalty. They would bring male
relatives of Victoria to Swindon station where there was an especially
prepared bedroom. And my relative made a small fortune pimping, and he
bought a row of homes in Swindon for his hard work. I just saw the
    homes recently.

9. I try not to eat dairy products because I prefer being unclogged

10. There was a french childrens book dedicated to the band: "Where is
the Tuna?" You may discuss all the above amongst yourselves.

Thanks to all those who offered to send me their session logs after my
Creative SLAB modem jammed and I missed my question being answered, big
thank especially to MArk Strijbos who did in fact supply me with a chat-log.
I didn't have my sound option switched on so I missed all the "whispered"
messages until after the show. Melissa, what on earth made you think I was
saying you were talking too much? You were saying you should have picked a
creative nickname, and I was just pointing out that, come transcription
time, at least your name will be indentifiable for other readers - the
people who used pseudonyms will be forever anonymous.

I'm currently in contact with the Rifff team to get some technical info, hit
counts and the like, as well as permission to use elements of the show on
Bungalow for "illustrative" purposes as part of a write up on the event.
The show is due to be repeated later in the year, and they will approach
Andy for another chat at that time.

And Peter, my interpretation of the closing of the show was that, if there
were no more questions about pop and biscuits then Andy was going and that
he would be glad to come back again. It all hangs in the punctuation. ;)

What it did highlight was how much fun IRC can be when a bunch of like
minded folk get together to give vent. An idea that has been dragged around
here a couple of times about having an XTC or, more specifically, a
Chalkhills IRC room for semi-regular meetings was floated by Peter
Fitzpatrick again during the show last night. All the Chalkies there were
keen on it, so maybe the time is ripe to raise the topic again. Anyone
interested?

Celebrate with shoestring saturnalia,

Simon

Subject: Rifff and classical songs

Riff chat was pretty cool. Great to see so many Chalkids on the thing.

I am proud to report that *my* question was the very first one to go
across! Dumb luck and fast typing strike again. I asked about the
record deal. No real new news: 3 contenders, one especially strong.

I am sure 30 people are posting right this second on further details of
the chat. Suffice to say it was fun.

Matt asked, in the last Chalkhills:

> Sorry, what are these songs? "Erlkonig", "Claire De Lune,"

"Erlkonig" (1815) is Franz Schubert's most famous song. Schubert was
the pre-eminent master of the German lieder, or art song. "Erlkonig"
revolutionized the art of accompaniment. The song, for voice and piano,
features a more complex piano part than had ever been written before.
Most lieder before this just had a vocal melody over fairly simple or
routine accompaniment. Schubert made the piano an integral part of the
musical drama, using it to dramatize the song's story (the words are by
Goethe) of the king of the spirits (the Erl-King) appearing to a small
child on a stormy night and enticing him to join the Erl-King in death.
Very dark and creepy, incredibly dramatic. Check it out. Dietrich
Fischer-Dieskau does it especially well.

"Clair de lune" (French for moonlight) is a poem by Verlaine that was
brilliantly set (again for voice and piano) by both Claude Debussy and
Gabriel Faure. My guess is that Dominique was referring to the Debussy
setting, which is somewhat better known. As Schubert and Schumann were
the kings of lieder (German song), Faure and Debussy -- and maybe
Poulenc -- were the masters of the chanson, the French art song.

Debussy also wrote a very famous "Clair de lune" for solo piano, from
the "Suite Bergamasque," but this is not the same as the song.

Classical song can teach one a great deal about songwriting in the pop
universe. Schubert understood how to craft a good hook *and* use the
music to reflect the meaning of the words. If you are so inclined, the
essential classical song composers to check out are probably:

Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, Richard Strauss, (all German) Faure,
Debussy, Poulenc, (French), Mussorgsky (Russian), Samuel Barber and Ned
Rorem (American).

Although I am pretty sure Andy and Colin aren't too familiar with the
classical song tradition, one of the reasons I am so big a fan is their
ability (especially Andy's) to make the music capture the meaning of the
words. A lot of pop/rock songwriting takes great lyrics and great music
and puts them together without one being totally linked to the other.
Andy does a better than average job of making the music show us what the
words mean.

Okay, sorry, I'm talking too much. See ya,

======================   Chalkhills' Children `97   =========================

The planned tape will be 60 minutes long. 60 minutes will give us 15 songs
of an average 4 minutes in length. Please no extended 20-minute jams.

YOU MUST RESERVE THE SONG YOU PLAN TO COVER.

Please estimate the length of your performance.

I will cut off accepting contributions when we reach the time limit. Email
me a maximum of two days before you are going to drop it in the mail. Email
postmark determines who is in and who is not. If you yank me around by
sending me email and then waiting a week to mail your tape, you may miss
out.
If, after reserving your cover, you know you won't be able to send it, SAY
SO!

Your finished tape must be received between August 18 and September 5. That
gives you 10 weeks to record something. 12 weeks is enough time to learn to
play a French Trombone, so there is plenty of time.

CONTRIBUTION RESERVATION GUIDELINES:
Who reserves a particular song first depends on the email timestamp. I will
confirm your reservation.

Email me at richard.pedretti-allen@octel.com with....
Contributor's Name:
Song Planned (List one song only. If you list two, I will only take the
first one):
Estimated Song Length: (I know this may be tough but guess or supply the
time of the original... but that concept may not work if you are doing
"Wrapped in Gray a la White Music" or "Radios in Motion a la Nonsuch."

Once the tape is "full" of reservations, I will still accept reservations as
long as the contributor realizes that they are on "Stand-by." Sorry, but I
had quite a few drop-outs last time (which worked out okay because, had they
all I arrived, I would have been in way over my head!), so I'm just covering
my ass. I want to manage things better this time.

MUSIC SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:
One song per contributor. Contributor must be a Chalkhills member.

Preferred media is DAT or CD. Acceptable media is 2 track 1/4"
reel-to-reel, 4 track 1/4" reel-to-reel or analog cassette.

Please do not contribute songs that have been published elsewhere (i.e.
copyrighted on another distributed product or published tribute tape).

If you want to fill up the rest of the tape with some of your other material
or XTC demos that you might have, cool!

Include with tape...
Song Performed:
Artist's or Group Name:
Source of Original:
Performers/Instruments:
Artist's or Group Name:
Sender's Name:
Address:
City/State:
Postal Code:
email address:

LAST BUT NOT LEAST:
This may initially sound strange but read the entire thing...

Contributors must send the money for the amount of tapes they wish to
receive. This is to prevent anyone from sending me garbage just to get on
the tape. On CC96 we had a contributor who did not purchase a copy of the
final tape... that seems very strange to me.

I don't want to position this as a mail-order version of the pay-to-play
club scam. You will get the product you ordered. Sending the money at the
time of tape submission is a show of faith. If you have some big problem
with this concept, email me direct.

LAST BUT DEFINITELY NOT LEAST:
I am shooting for a release date of December 8. How that's for turn-around
time? Just in time for your Holiday shopping! Makes a great stocking
stuffer!

Let's outdo CC96!!

Cheers, Richard

Hello all! Very short post today:

There wouldn't happen to be a transcript anywhere? Unfort., I never
could have participated because I had to go to school... err.
Anyway, I'd love to see what Andy said...

I took a late lunch today.

I NEVER take a late lunch.

I got back to the office at 1:15.

There was a voicemail message left at 1:05.

"Hey, Richard, this is Andy Partridge. I thought I'd ring you up and
thank you for putting that disk together. We chortled, we sighed, we
cried, we laughed, we died... and all stations in between. I thought it
was a well-noble effort and a great big gold star on that, man. So,
thanks very much! It's kind of tough doing this one-way thing to a
voicemail so I guess I'll go boil my head right now. Okay, bye, and
thanks from the whole band."

How about Roky Erikson, whose "All That May Do My Rhyme" record was
released in 1995. I think there was a fifteen year or so gap between that
and his previous solo recording.

For those who don't know Roky, he was the leader of the 60s Texas
psychedelic band 13th Floor Elevators. I really enjoyed "All That May Do My
Rhyme" and would recommend it.

I like the song, but there are few, if any, XTC songs I dislike. Well, of
the ones I've heard. I don't have many XTC rarities, so I suppose there may
be some rare songs I dislike.

Subject: Andy writing for Nicky Holland/ Soundclips available

Silly me! I assumed that Nicky wasn't popular enough to have her own fan-run
web page, and as near as I can tell, I'm correct (one isn't listed in the
search engine, anyway). It slipped my mind that Nicky's label, Epic, might
have developed one for her, and indeed they have. So I could've just looked
up the information to begin with instead of putting out a call for it.
Anyway, all three Andy Partridge compositions ("New York Inside My Head",
"Paper Chase", and "Another Tale From The Riverbank") *will* be on Nicky
Holland's "Sense and Sensuality" CD, coming out June 24th. And if you zip on
over to...

http://www.epiccenter.com

...and click the search link for Nicky Holland, you'll end up on her page,
which has links to Real Audio and .Wav 15-second clips of two of the Andy
songs. "New York Inside My Head" is particularly gorgeous, reminiscent of
the slower songs from the new demos tape ("The Last Balloon", "I Can't Own
Her").

Oh, and to parody those announcements people make whenever they dispense
information from corporate sites: I am in no way, shape or form affiliated
with Epic Records or its parent company, Sony Entertainment. Nor am I a
corporate stooge for the people at RealAudio, either. So don't get any
ideas. You can't prove a damn thing! I do, however, *work* for a living.
 But doesn't everyone?

Glad to hear that Richard Pedretti-Allen will be continuing the Chalkhills'
Children series. Will the second tape have a different name? If it does, I
hope the suggestions are less groan-inducing than the XTC-inspired ice cream
flavors list members kept submitting. (Bad puns, they are my sworn foes!)
Anyway, I plan on doing a cover for the tape. I hope direct to
tape-recorder sound quality will suffice.

Bye!

I believe you're thinking of "Cairo", one of my favourite songs from
ET/TLOS (what ever version you're familiar with, Explode or the
Salvage half)... BTW, what's on the cover of the Take Away/TLOS LP?
I'm just curious... Never seen it.

BTW, I just listened to the ET CD again, and well, it was a little
better than the first time, but still not up there with my
favourites. Anyone else think White Music's a really good album?

I've seen the Chalkhills tape and I loved his appearances on 120 mins
and Post-Modern... Especially the way he was tearing into everyone...
my favourite was the bit about Ringo..."I hear he's on tour now... I
mean, what's he gonna do? One can only hear "Octopus' Garden" so
many times!" And of course the entire rant about Depeche Mode... If
I was one of the MTV Programming Directors I'd make a few changes,
including getting rid of all the crappy non-animation &
non-music-video shows (i.e. Singled Out), and also get back Andy
Partridge to guest host some shows...
Me: Mr. Partridge? I'm with MTV and I was wondering if you'd like
to host some of our Music Video shows?
AP: But XTC hasn't released an album in 5 years!
Me: Well, you can promote Nonsuch again! Or maybe even O&L! Or the
bootlegs of new demos that have been circulating! I don't care!
PLEASE JUST HOST!
AP: Well, you seem like a pretty pathetic bloke....

(Please excuse the total lack of AP's speech patterns, I haven't
heard enough of his normal speech to formulate an accurate
representation yet)

Also, as for the Spice Girls and Hanson dropping off the face of the
earth, I'm all for the Spice Girls doing so, but I've never heard
Hanson, but from what I've heard about them, I'm tempted to think
maybe they should join the Spices.... especially after hearing/seeing
2 Spice Girl videos..... EVIL!

Ah well, that's this world over... which is a really great song, BTW.
