Subject: The noisy bonfire

Whoops, I've got a confession to make. My original posting on the creaking
chair during sacrificial bonfire was made without the benefit of a recent
listen to the song in question. Given that more than one Hill-dweller's
interest has been piqued by the subject, and doubting my own sanity, I
revisited the track over the weekend. Humbly, I regret to inform you I've
made a bit of a blue. The noise I was referring to is there, but not in the
spot I mentioned.

It's after the final line of "Banish The Bad", immediately prior to the
final instrumental fadeout.

JEFFAE@CEDAR.GOSHEN.EDU (Jeff) hears something there also.

>Sacrificial Bonfire... I do Hear the Chair squeak, it's very very very
>quiet and if it hadn't been noted alreay I wouldn't have noticed it, but it
>does have a distinctive sound different than the crackling fire. Also, I
>don't know if this was mentioned before maybe it's what started this line,
>but I also noticed that in the silence after the last "Banish the Bad"
>there is someone counting the beats "Three, Four" and the music starts
>again.

Now I'm really confused, because he CAN hear a chair creaking after "Bring
in the New" I too have heard what sounds like a faint counting of the beat,
or click track, or something, during the "Banish The Bad" passage.

Tobin Munsat <tmunsat@pppl.gov> notes that he's heard the creaking chair
after "Bring In The New" as well. Is this a conspiracy? He also adds

There's also the sound of someone (one of the string players?) clearing
their throat or coughing or something, and also what sounds like someone
dropping a bow on their cello.

Yeah, I thought I was imagining someone coughing, or maybe someone hacking
away in the room next door to my lounge (and the noise was filtering
through the wall). It's almost subliminal, but you're right I
think. Haven't heard the dropping bow on the cello, but then I'm not sure
what that would sound like. Coughs I can recognise.

AMANION@rex.smumn.edu has a different opinion.

>I know what the "creaking chair" --referred to originally by Martin
>Bell and more recently by others-- is. At least I think I do. Not the
>crackling that others have pointed out, but the little squeak after
>"bring in the new." I believe it is a finger "squeaking" a round-wound
>acoustic guitar string. Give it a careful listen

That's plausible also. Thanks for the advise - I will give it another
careful listen. OOOOHHH, my aching tinitus.

Subject: Mayor Of Simpleton lyric?

In the song "The Mayor Of Simpleton," right after the line "then I'm the
man who grew the money tree," the answer line is "No chain of office and no
hope of gettng one." At least, according to the lyric book, that's what
that line is. My question is two-fold. 1.) What is a chain of office?
Is this one of those British things completely lost on Americans like me?
and 2.) might the lyric actually be "No CHANGE of office ..." It sort of
sounds like that to my ears, and it makes more lyrical sense, as in Andy is
the Mayor, and he can't change that.

Now accepting all convoluted theories!!

The new issue of Q magazine (UK) comes with a free book - The Q Bok of Punk
Legends - which features potted biographies of 26 bands with some vague
punk connection - Adam and the Ants, Costello, Talking Heads and, you've
guessed it, those well-known punk heroes, XTC.

The band gets five pages of pretty well researched stuff (though little
that the average Chalkie won't already know), taking us from 1977 to the
release of A Testimonial Dinner (not bad given the latter hasn't been
released over here).

One crucial fact new to me is that in January 1978, Andy Partridge's
parents appeared on the TV game show *Mr and Mrs*. Wow! It's just so easy
to forget how wild those punk rock days really were.

(If anyone wants to hear my own *Mr and Mrs* anecdote, e-mail me privately).

Most of you probably saw the "120 Minutes" 10th Anniversary special on
MTV yesterday. It did include a brief snippet from AP's appearance--when
was that, 1989 or so? As you recall, AP and Dave "I am an idiot"
Ken-Dull were standing in Central Park and Dave asked AP what was the
strangest thing he'd ever done in a park. AP looked in the camera and
said, "Cut!" Then "This is a family show." That exchange wasn't nearly
the most interesting or funniest part of AP's appearance, but what do you
expect?

By the way, Costello was depicted for about 2 seconds, the same amount of
time devoted to Shonen Knife. Sheesh.

Yay! Steve-o Lutz has answered the questions correctly...

"...dig down!" -- Candymine
"...the roofs of Swindontown" -- Red Brick Dream
"...emotion I'm afraid" -- Crocodile
"...what you're used to" -- Scarecrow People
"...running steady" -- One of the Millions

Since many people seem to pass judgement based on religious ideas, what sin
did Colin and Carol Moulding commit in the eyes of, for example, Catholicism?
--Adultery

Why does Dave Gregory have to take drugs on a regular basis?
--He's diabetic

Congratulations, and thanks to everyone for playing! There will/might be
another contest soon...

I listened to Sacrificial Bonfire really loudly yesterday, and only *kinda*
heard all the background things. I'll try again later...

Ok this one is weird.....

Last night my wife was talking with a writer friend of hers in
Minneapolis. He's a big XTC fan and I told him some time back that I
heard on the Chalkhills email list digest that the band had left
Virgin Records in England. I don't know how long ago this was, as
I'd forgotten about the conversation myself....

So my wife's friend told a bud of his out in Los Angeles, who
apparantly is a musician, about how I heard that XTC left Virgin from
discussions on the internet. This musician is apparantly working
with Paul Fox in some capacity. The musician told Paul Fox, who I
guess was surprised at the news and didn't know about it beforehand.

Anyway, everything worked in reverse and I just heard about it last
night. Strange story....thought I'd share it....

Hello folks. I'll try not to take too much of your time...

What beautiful lyrics! Where does this song show up--on one of his new
demos? I gotta have it!

Sure do. Probably the best covers of Jimmy Hendrix "Purple Haze" (That
would be the first cover, Naoyuking "PUPIL HAZE") and Led Zeppelin's
"Whole Lotta Love". Led Zeppelin does the other song also, but I can't
remember the name off the top of my head.

By the way, did anyone watch the 120 Minutes decade special on MTV over
the weekend? They tried to cram all the bands that appeared on the show
into a measly 30 minutes special, but during one of their montages, the
beaming face of our Mr. Partridge was shown standing against a tree
(anyone know where this video was from?). Later, they had a small
interview clip with him saying something which ended with him looking
into the camera and saying "Cut!"

Well said, Ira. The gig was lots of fun, if rather different in
atmosphere from Yazbek's usual evening performances. We'll probably never
hear a G-rated version of "Schmuck in a Vacuum" again! And the artwork on
the American version of the album is awesome! Same great music as the
Brit version, of course.

Just a few things on my mind--

This connection between ANdy and 'ANtmusic'/Adam Ant is very interesting,
especially since that kooky bondage-laden Antster is one of my favorite
musicians(behind the obvious Swindoneers). Can anyone postulate further
as to what TMBG are referring to in their latest offering?

Also, as for my humble opinion, in 'The Loving', it is most clearly
'Straight t'ya', though before this was brought up, I always assumed it
to be 'Stand clear'. There is clearly 3 syllables, and though perhaps
'Straight t'ya' doesn't sound like your average XTC lyric, it seems to be
what they are, indeed, saying.

Lastly, as for this 'James and the Giant Peach' stuff, both my brother and
I were wondering if any of his demos were accepted to be used in the
soundtrack(just because 4 didn't make it doesn't necessarily mean that
none did). Just curious...the bastards should be shot if they didn't
take any of his songs!
			That's all from my end,
				Mike

Subject: the man himself speaks

I've just come off the phone from Andy Partridge! (And no, I'm not giving
out his number). I had a good chat with him and I wish I could pass on vast
quantities of news but, by the sounds of it, things are much the same as
they have been for some time.

The band recently got rid of a lawyer who's been trying to get them out of
their Virgin/EMI deal for four years, making seemingly no progress. Their
new lawyer has achieved considerably more in a matter of weeks, and Andy is
hopeful that they might finally be free in a few weeks time (technically
they still owe Virgin another four albums).

In the meantime, they've amassed 28 songs and, as reported here before,
they'd like to do two CDs, one mellow/classical, one hard-edged. They'd
either be sold separately or together (or the whole idea could be ditched
by a new record label, because it's not as profitable for record companies
to have more than ten songs on an album because more mechanical copyright
fees have to go to the artists). The songs seem to divide into one or other
camp - or at least they will do with a bit of tweeking.

He says he's tried to avoid too much divorce-related stuff, though there
are a couple of songs with a connection to his split up. He says he doesn't
want to end up sounding like Phil Collins - whose album he parodied as "No
IQ Required".

Andy's trips to New York to see his girlfriend have enabled him to meet
potential US record label people and he's getting promising noises from
them.

His track for the forthcoming Talking Heads LP was created by the band
sending him a kind of groove track and asking him to build a song arund it.
The track he chose, in true Talking Heads style, seemed to consist of eight
bars of one chord, eight bars of another chord, eight of the first, eight
of the second and so on. Andy thought they were nice chords but could only
work out the first one. When he asked the band, it turned out they were
both A flat (I think) played in different configurations. He reworked the
song from there and flew over to sing it himself. He hasn't heard the final
mix yet.

He had some very surprising stories about David Byrne, who now has nothing
to do with the group, but I think it'd be libelous if I passed them on.

He's also been writing with Chris Difford (of Squeeze) but he's not sure
what will happen to the material. Some of it is too difficult for the
grumbly-voiced Difford to sing himself.

He's written a song for pop star Cathy Dennis which could end up as a
single (and she's had a few hit singles before, so perhaps it could be
Andy's first hit in several decades . . .). She's added a couple of words
to it, so she gets a co-writing credit.

He has a feeling he might end up writing with Terry Hall again, but nothing
definite.

On the great Blur vs Oasis debate, he reluctantly sides with Oasis on the
strength of Liam Gallagher's voice. He doesn't listen to much new stuff
though. We had a chat about all the references (rip-offs) that these young
whippersnappers have to the bands of yore.

The really important news, though, is that the much-discussed backing line
on *The Loving* is . . . wait for it . . . "Straight to ya!" I pass this on
in all honesty as someone who used to believe it was "Stand clear" (at
least until I listened to it closely a couple of nights ago). When I told
Andy about the "Stand clear" mis-hearing, he joked that they were actually
singing, "Mind the gap" (a joke which only people who have used the London
Underground will get). So this must be the official end of this thread. A
sad moment for us all.

Andy says he had a lot of trouble getting Colin to sing the phrase with the
right rhythm (which possibly explains the confusion). From the record it
sounds to me like he got it right in the end, but Andy says he kept putting
too much emphasis on the final word.

The second really important news, subsequent to my last posting, is that
Andy's parents actually won the round of TV's *Mr and Mrs* on which they
appeared in January 1978. Andy still laughs at his mother's
Buddhist-sounding response to the question, "What would you like most in
the world". She answered, "Peace of mind".

And on that calm and reassuring note I will leave you.

Since one of the strengths of Chalkhills (Thanks, John Relph) is that it
tunes us into some great non-XTC music, I think it would be a cool idea if
we created a regular feature such as a review of an LP for each issue. So
that we don't burden Relph with tons of reviews, we should organize who
should go for each issue. If you are interested in turning some heads and
getting XTCers into anything from Thelonious Monk to Frank Zappa to Smokey
Robinson, email me by April 6 at bwoll@abacus.bates.edu. and I will try to
sort out who will write when. And let's try to get beyond Jellyfish and
Ben Folds Five and Yazbek. Good stuff yes, but anyone familiar with this
list already knows a bit about some of their material. Cheers, Ben

Oh yeah!! The Loving lyrics - Stand Clear!!! Enough, it isn't even a
great tune -listen to Antheap, Miniature Sun, King...before Andy's
allowance of pure, unadulterated, cotton candy schlok. How many B sides
should have gone on the LP before that and President Kill...Oh well, O&L
still gets ***.5 stars, behind Eng. Set, Sky, BlSea, TBE, D&W, and tied
with Mum and Non.

Sorry, just had to get that off my chest. I can just see Colin cringing
behind his bass while that was being recorded. Perhaps that is why we
can't hear what he is saying. OK, I'm :-) now. You may now all go on with
your lives. Phew.

I could be wrong, but what I remember hearing is that it's not a TALKING
HEADS album, but a HEADS album, i.e. literally Chris, Tina and Jerry
without a certain big-suited "Talker" out front. And the "Heads" already
have released a track on a computer-movie soundtrack whose name escapes me
right now. (I'm thinking the title is "Virtual Reality," but that seems way
too obvious. The CD was on either MCA or Radioactive, and also had a pretty
good new Peter Gabriel track.) This particular Heads song had Debbie Harry
as lead singer. It wasn't bad, but not quite worth taping. I don't know
anything about Partridge's future involvement, but the Harry cameo seems to
point toward a "rotating vocalist"-type format.

I've had private e-mails, and there've been Chalkhills postings (cf #2-92,
question from Klaus Bergmaier) about where to obtain "Look Look" and copies
of promo videos released since. I have made up a master tape of all the
material I have so far, and can come to an "arrangement" with any Chalkies
who want to track down copies of this hard-to-find stuff. (I gather "Look
Look" has long been deleted).

My collection of XTC videos is by no means comprehensive, but it is of very
good quality and eminently watchable. (Quality ranges from A+ to B-)

My master tape is Super-VHS and is in hi-fi stereo. All the "Look Look"
clips are stereo, as are some of the others.

Where did I get the clips that aren't on "Look Look"? Our (Australia's)
national broadcaster, ABC-TV, has a Friday/Saturday all-nite rock show
called "Rage". On Sats they play specials on various bands and once they
had an XTC special. They play clips in full, with no logos and with stereo
sound where available. Some friends and I are trying to lobby the show to
update their XTC special - if they ever do, I'll post the details in
Chalkhills.

Meanwhile, if anyone wants a copy of what I've got, please e-mail me with
your details, together with info on any material you'd like to swap. I
have access to facilities to convert from PAL to NTSC formats.

Hiya Chalkhillians!

I've just received a rather nice birthday present....a CD of the "Nonsuch"
demos. It's an hour long and has tracks that I hadn't heard before; I'm
immediately struck by "Goosy Goosy" and "It's Snowing Angel". It's
especially nice to hear "new" (to me!) XTC on my birthday. I received a
second disc as well, which has tracks such as "Motorcycle Landscape",
"Glow", "Disque Bleu", and "Work" on it, but haven't listened to it as much
yet. What a great birthday, eh? :)

Oh yeah, I went to Disney's web site, and on their "James and the Giant
Peach" page sent them email as to why they didn't use Andy's songs. If I
hear anything back from them I'll let you all know.

First of all, HI!
Second of all, who are you? Did I see you there? I was in the blue shirt
and brown leather jacket.

??????? What? The Laughing Man has Partridge playing on 2 tracks and
producing one. That's it. Dave Yazbek is the guy who put the album out. You
know, the guy on the keyboards.

>style of some of XTC's lighter material (perhaps even closer in tone to
>early Squeeze). The songs benefit from a live performance - when the band
>gets up a head of steam, they sound quite a bit like classic Squeeze, with
>Yazbek as Jools Holland on keyboard.

Yazbek does a great job on the keyboards, and his songs are fantastic,
aren't they? But he's NO Jools Holland. Jools might be banging away but his
expression wouldn't change. And Jools is more of a
melodic-improvisationist. Squeeze misses him. :(

Jools Holland thread to XTC: Jools (solo) was the opening act for XTC's
last show in California in 1983. When XTC cancelled their tour, Jools had
to re-schedule a solo tour because he was going to support XTC the whole
way thru.

>It seems as though Yazbek will be performing at Fez's in lower Manhattan on
>April 9 and April 16.

NOT April 13th, as it says on the back of the card.

Hello Chalksters,

Yeah - my original Jules Verne's Sketchbook. I loaned it out years ago in
an attempt to make a new convert. 'This tape of unrealeased demo material
is better than most band's best stuff,' I said.

Never got it back. It's gone. I am sad.

I forgot to mention in my last post what Andy said to me about *Moon On
Your Dress*, one of the songs on Terry Hall's LP. Apparently, as he first
wrote it (and those under the age of 27 should shield their eyes at this
point), it was about a semen stain on a woman's dress (presumably in the
shape of a moon). Terry Hall kept the tune but changed most of the words,
which is why, lovely though it is, it doesn't quite make sense (nearly, but
not quite).

*I Drew a Lemon* was Hall's title and Andy helped him take it from there.

Hall, it seems, is a very slow writer. He'd call Andy after a four month
gap and say, "You know, I still haven't found a rhyme for that line".

This is a follow up to a posting concerning the band Jellyfish. There was
some dispute over whether or not Jellyfish were influenced by Queen. I'm
not sure if we have all been listening to the same CD or not. But Spilt
Milk is definately a product that has been influenced by Queen as well as
XTC. How do I know this? Well, in an interview with Andy Sturmer he
mentioned the fact that Queen was a big influence on their sound. In fact,
the song, The Ghost at Number One, is a tribute to Freddy Mercury. I was
also surprised to hear him say that Jellyfish took a special trip to Swindon
back when theit first CD was released (Bellybutton as opposed to the Beatnik
Beatch release) just to meet XTC. It is a shame that all the bands I like
either break up or are still waiting to record. :(
ie. Dramarama, Jellyfish.......and ofcourse XTC.

I think R. Stone is basically only useful for news
blurbs and on occassion in-depth sort of features these
days. From a working journalists point of view, the only
reason I still pick it up is becuase Rolling Stone still
has the access to people other magazines generally don't.
I mean they get to speak to virtually whomever they want,
so that sometimes makes them a decent info resource. Other-
wise they're have essentially suburbanized the magazine into
being completely useless. Once they realized they made a
severe faux-paus with "Skylarking," they knew that they
should make a fair amount of noise about O&L. They even
ran a brief "COMING SOON!!" news item about the album when
the boys were in LA just putting it together.
