Subject: Tenuous Thread ?

Dear Chalkies,

Hats off for James Dignan!
His tour de force - linking XTC with Swindon - must rank as the most
tenuous link possible.

Here's another one : XTC were produced by John Leckie, who also
produced dutch band the Tapes, who had a record deal with Passport.
This was also the label of Larry Fast ( i think he even owned it )
who used to play in this band called Utopia with this guy called Todd
Rundgren who went on to produce XTC.

There you are...full circle!

I like this developing thread a lot...beats discussing the musical
merits of the likes of U2 or REM all the time :)
Seriously folks, I think we should try to beef up the XTC content
in our postings!
After all, they never cease to amaze and amuse us.

And on a slightly related note: some people could be a bit more
careful when they vent their likes/dislikes.
Feelings are easily hurt! - so watch it Josh! :)

And on a totally different note: all those young whippersnappers
(under-30's ) should take note that if it were not for the support
of the old timers (over 30's) during all these years, our heroes
would probably have thrown in the towel long ago.

bye 4 now,

m@rk

Well, XTC have progressed a lot haven't they? You can't compare
XTC with some retarded punk band!

I'm sorry Mick & Simon, but I think your opinions in this quest-
ion are complete bullshit.:)
They didn't CHOOSE to stop touring, they were forced to because of
Partridge's stagefright! I think that some of XTC's current mat-
erial would be great to hear live. I can't see any problems with
performing the newer material live, not with todays technology.
I've seen Paul McCartney perform Beatles songs from the late
sixties period that I heard were supposedly too "complex" to per-
form live, and it was brilliant. So, I'm really looking forward
to see XTC live, and hopefully they will play a couple of gigs
here in Sweden!

Say whatever you will about "The Smartest Monkeys".....but you must
admit; Dave Mattacks grooves like a MOFO on that tune!! (Colin, too for
that matter). And I LOVE the synth solo!! Definitely one of XTC's funkier
tunes....
By the way, does anyone out there have, or know of, any Colin demos
for the new album(s)?? I've heard alot of new Andy stuff, but I have yet to
hear anything from Mr. Moulding. I did read a few new titles in "The Little
Express", just wondering if any of these have made their way onto tape.
Any help would be MUCH appreciated!!

I think that as a title for the next album, XTC should take their cue from
LL Cool J and call it "Don't Call It a Comeback! We've Been Here for
Years!"

I was reading a Kate Bush FAQ (I'm not a fan, I was just getting the URL
for a friend and decided to read the thing) and saw that the supposed
motto of Kate Bush fans is "Any day now." Shouldn't that be *our*
motto? After all, we've got a cool tune to set it to...

(Irrelevant aside - why do Kate Bush fans often spell her name "kaTe"?
Should we start talking about aNdY, CoLin, and daVe?)

This thing with stringing bands together and leading to unlikely
connections is similar to a custom called "Baconizing," based on the
principle that Kevin Bacon is the center of the entertainment universe -
every actor can be traced back to him. XTC can be very easily Baconized,
since they did "Happy Families" for "She's Having a Baby," in which Bacon
starred.

Hi, y'all

>The Indigo Girls the new Lennon/McCartney?

Yes. Since I brought it up, allow me to explain:
* First, they're a duo of songwriters.
* One (E. Saliers) has a high, sweet voice, and writes songs with charming
melodies and uplifting lyrics. The other (A. Ray) is more intense, has a
deeper, grittier voice, and writes songs that are darker, more mysterious.
They temper each others' songs in exactly the same way John and Paul did.
* Their harmonies are just as irresistable and inventive; the arrangements
on their latest album are as lush and adventurous as anything the beatles
or xTc have done.
* Fans--and they're as fanatically devoted as the Beatles' fans, trust me--
discuss which of them are their favorite (mine is Emily), analyze the tunes
in much the same way we do Beatles and xTc songs...
* Furthermore now they have a rhythm section (Sara Lee, Jerry Marotta)
that, IMHO, is the best pop music rhythm section out there...it ain't jus'
for folkies, no sir... Check out the live "1200 Curfews" to see what I
mean...
* Finally, their best music brings tears to my eyes, much like John and
Paul. Sorry to get sappy on you, but it's true.

>Mitchell Froom, King of the Grating Gimmick Percussion, producing XTC?

Have you heard Froom since the album that turned you off? Check out the
new Richard Thompson: you'll find the percussion to your liking. Mitchell
is growing up--maybe marrying Suzanne Vega has made him a bit earthier.
He'd likely be a good producer for xTc--he's getting good at stripping it
down, while achieving polished results. However, my pick for producing xTc
would be Rick Rubin as well. At this point, he'd give them the shoeing in
the nuts they're desperately needing.

Well, aside from the fact that you refer to the Chalkhills' readership as
"guys," aside from your misspellings of Manring and Pastorius, aside from
the fact that bassists who play at that level don't "kick each other's
behind" (or even THINK that way), and aside from the fact that
Mills/Rourke/Levin/Wooten/Manring/Pastorius cover so much stylistic ground
that they really can't be compared (furthermore, they're all "Serious"
bassists), you have great taste in bass players!

By the way, Robert Fripp looks back on his meeting and auditioning of Tony
Levin as one of the best musical experience of his life.

>1) The thing about monkeys is old and stale. I don't need yet another song

Jeez, Joshua, I'm sorry but I don't exactly see the pop music world overrun
by monkey-men. Did your parents make you watch "Inherit the Wind" ad
nauseam as a child? Were you raised by fundamentalist Bible-thumpers?
Could you all please enlighten me on the surfeit of monkey-men songs that
have been plaguing pop music all these years (Aside from "Monkeys in
Humanskin Suits" of course)?

Cheers and all that,

He is my vote for the next drummer for XTC. Okay, I know it's a
farfetched idea, but Dave Weckl is the man I believe to be the best
drummer alive. He is a GRP artist (yeah, he does jazz stuff), but he
is also capable of the most ridiculous yet at the same time tasteful
grooves I have ever heard. He has a number of solo albums available on
GRP, which are heavily funk-influenced fusion, but he also does an
enormous amount of session work and seems capable of performing in any
     style with taste and alacrity.

And then, of course, in the same vein there is always Dennis Chambers
(recently with John McLaughlin's organ trio)...

First of all, thanks to the legions of people that came to my aid with info
on how to get the Carmen Sandiego album. I really appreciate everyone's
help, and this reason is why I think I'm still on this list! Sure, the
mostly intelligent banter is also a selling point. But I ordered the disc
yesterday and I'll let you know what happened. :)

And an unsolicited plug...
For those who didn't get 'em last go-round, Phil's Chalkhills shirt is quite
cool. You actually might see me wearing one if you're anywhere near the
greater New York area -- no, I haven't worn it to work yet, but I sometimes
like to wander around Manhattan. If you see me wearing it, stop me and say
"Howdy!"

OBLIGATORY XTC REFERENCE: The next album should be called "Phoenix." Besides
the fact that it's part of the last line of the last song of the last album,
it could also refer to the band's (heh) Loss of Virginity, so to speak. Up

Okay, Peter, I'm not so great with notation (and I wouldn't know
how to do it via e-mail), but I think "Nigel" goes like this:

Play eighth notes on the floor tom (with your right hand, if
you're a right-handed drummer); with your left hand, play the
"and" before "1" and "2" on the hi-hat; play the kick drum on the
"1" and "2"; play the snare on the "3". That's it, basically.
Every fourth bar, play the hi-hat accents on some toms and accent
the snare hit with a cymbal (a china cymbal sounds really good there).

John! I'm surprised at you! Dave Weckl is one of the most BADASS
drummers in the world at this particular moment. He is one of a
handful who can basically do anything they want on the kit.

However, he's primarily a jazz and/or fusion player and, IMHO,
would be completely inappropriate for an XTC album, much as
Bill Bruford, Simon Phillips, Dennis Chambers or little Stuie
Copeland would be...

The boys need someone a little more low key, used to working in a pop music
situation, willing to support the song and show off his or her
technique only when needed ... Pete Thomas, anyone? (okay, okay, I'll
shut up about him, already)

So we've heard something negative about The Laughing Man.
kinterkn@winternet.com (Priscilla) sez part of Tomorrow reminds her of
the theme from Green Acres.
fisher@easynet.co.uk (Mark Fisher) hates Pinoccio's Nose.
Mrs. Todd Bernhardt thinks he repeats "Fight the one-armed man" too much.

My, my. Such strong words.

No, this confirms it even more. No one has come to me privately and
said, Ya know, that Laughing Man stuff really sucks! We are unanimous.

(I'm not even going to tel you what I think Fight the One-Armed Man
is about. And it's not the Fugitive or Twin Peaks.)

Moving on so I don't get accused of making this the Yazbek list,
I think I'll make it the Belew list instead.

dik@ICON-INC.NET (Dik LeDoux) recommends the Bears very highly. But
in the past tense. They're still around as the local Cincinnati band
they always were. When Belew was with them (which was intermittently)
they were the Bears. When he was doing other things, they called
theselves the Raisins. Now they've taken to calling themselves
the Psychodots and are still quite good. I don't know how widely
the song Fear is Never Boring was played outside Cincinnati (there's
a version on a Raisins record as well as one by the Bears) but
my husband considers it the most perfect pop song ever.
Anyone know it?

Belew's solo stuff is to be recommended to XTC fans as well.
Unfortunately few of the individual records are in print, but
there is a compilation CD out there with some of the best of...
on it.

Now who is this list about again? Oh yeah. Those guys. Well
what have they done for us lately? (kidding)

On the AP demos, they are incredible, aren't they? Someone
mentioned The Last Balloon. He (andy)'d better get his pronunciation

enunciated. It sounds very Nazi-era as it stands.

  >Climb aboard, climb aboard Jew women. You won't need any
   gems or furs...

Oh well. Once we've hired the producer, we'll make sure that's
taken care of.

Take care.

Like us men, like us men, will they ever like us men?

and while singing!) is a great job.
BTW, when I listened to Anthology 2 (especially Taxman - "if you drive a

All uf you forget Yes' Chris Squire!

In response to the question "whatever happened to The Bears":

The three Bears who weren't Adrian Belew came from a legendary Cincinnati
area band called The Raisins (Adrian has roots in the Cincy/Northern
Kentucky area). After the Bears' breakup, they came back to Cincinnati and
began playing around town as The Raisins again, then shortly after changed
their name to Psychodots. Under this name, they have released three CDs, the
latest of which is "Awkwardsville", which you *really* should have. They
still play around Cincinnati, and if you're in the neighborhood, you owe it
to yourself to see 'em live.

Lesse, where do I begin...

1. The Smartest Monkeys - apparently, this is not a "grey area"
song. either you love it or hate it. I like the lyrics because they
approached a tired song theme - "society's screwed" - from a different
angle. Instead of the usual blatant straightforward "oh, woe is man," it
approached it with a great sense of sarcasm and cynicism, "we should be
proud of our accomplishments 'cuz we can now sleep on park benches and find
nutrition out of the rubbish bins" (you have to read that with a sarcastic
tone, else it sounds like I've interpreted the song as a glorification of
homelessness...). It may be a tired theme, but it was done interestingly,
with a music background.

2. Producers - while I still have my votes behind Rick Rubin, Brian Eno
would be a VERY interesting choice. Most, if not all, the albums he's
produced have such an eclectic spin to them. Putting his tastes alongside
Andy and Colin's above average musical senses could produce a very
experimental, unique album. However, i'd like to see this collaboration a
couple of albums down the line. After all of us having to endure such a
long gap between discs, I think we all need to hear some good
straightforward music that XTC does best.

3. Songs Ya Just Don't Like - there's only one XTC I find I skip over -
"The Sonambulist". While the tone of the song fits the concept of
sleepwalking, I'm just not keen on unmelodic, droning tunes.

4. Green Acres - I might be wrong, but weren't the lead actors Eddie ALBERT
and ZSA ZSA Gabor? And, of course, the burning question: "What would the
Green Acres theme sound like had XTC covered it?"

See ya's

Subject: No XTC content, but we've got to end this discussion.

This has to stop. Add it to the FAQ if necessary.

1. Green Acres featured Eddie Albert, not Eddie Fisher.
2. The pig was Arnold Ziffle, not Arnold Zukerman
3. Your favorite character was Eb, not Zeb.

(Jeez, did any of you guys actually watch this show?)

Now for near-XTC content, can anyone here identify the episode on which Jeff
Beck guest starred or the character he played?

I've got it!!!!!!!!
have Lee" Scratch" Perry produce...then we can look forward to another
album full of dubs to follow( or would the dubs make the cut and the
"normal" tracks be released at another time.....
as far as bass players go, besides liking Colin's work, Jah Wobble has
some interesting sounds and now for an obscure selection.....Fred Chandler
of the band Caveman Shoestore who plays a bass with heavy distortion,
fingering the frets hammering like mad and playing it as a lead guitar....
it's very interesting...they ( caveman Shoestore) put out an album with Hugh
Hopper(Soft Machine) last year called Caveman Hughscore available on Tim
Kerr records....in case anyone is interested.
this talk of a tape tree sounds interesting since I've never heard any of
Andy's demo's and salavate at the thought of having " Jules Verne" on my
stereo. -Stephen Mahoney

'ello again. Re: Joshua Hall-Bachner & "the 4 XTC albums I own", and
someone's comment about "Lack of Early XTC Album Syndrome"! Yes, this
can be a debilitating disease! Run out and get "Black Sea" as well.

Speaking of that, I must admit that even though I own most XTC CD's and
have heard the few I don't have, I've never heard Go!2 or White Music.
Can some Chalkhillians give me a few pros & cons on these 2???
Please, no flamers for being so profoundly uncultured & ignorant...

And speaking of Chalkhillians - you can all take a brief bow, because
I'd like to complement our whole group for giving me an outlet to read
about and discuss some good producers, good bands, good musicians, etc.
I bring this up because although I have a friend or two who's into good
(read offbeat) music, most of my friends/relatives don't even know who
most of these people ARE, much less being familiar with their music,
willing to give a listen, etc.

Theatre references - as 1 person said, maybe lots of us are at least a
little artistically leaning, but not necessarily all theatre majors. I'm
a big theatre fan, at least.

Finally, big thanx to Richard Pedretti-Allen for his hilarious "XTC
connections" in the last Digest, and Phil Corless for doing another batch
of t-shirts! (I bow down, Phil, & a check will be in the mail!!!).

Fellow chalkies,
I acquired a Canadian cd of the BBC concert at Best Buy for $9.99.
I'll put my votes in for Belew or Eno as producers.
Jason & the Argonauts is one of the XTC songs that IMHO is like going on
vacation every time I listen to it. Such pleasure.

Be Well,
Wes

Subject: Carnivorous Concrete

Hello....
A few random chalk lines.....
New album.... Here's a title, "A Different Kind Of Tinsel". Huh? Eh? Kind
of like the Buzzcocks "Different Kind Of Tension." Ironic? You be the
judge.
Producer..... Has Roddy Frame ever produced somone else? Dolby is a good
choice/suggestion.
Question.... I posed this one to you before, but no response. "Explode
Together." Is it worth it?
Apology... Sorry that this post has nothing to do with carnivorous
concrete. It just sounded cool.
Last but not least................... Green Acres ......................
				Cast of characters
Eddie Albert (not Fisher - Oliver Wendall
				Douglas
				Eva Gabor - Lisa Douglas
?????? - Eb Dawson (Not Zeb)
				?????? - Fred Ziffel
				?????? - Doris Ziffel
				Arnold Ziffel as himself
				Pat Buttram - Mr. Haney
				?????? - Sam Drucker
				?????? - Newt Kiley
				?????? - Joe Carson
				?????? - Alf Monroe
				?????? - Ralph Monroe
				?????? - Hank Kimball (Well, it's not
Hank Kimball. Wait! Come to think of it,
                                yes it is!
				Henrietta the Hen as herself
Elenore the Cow as herself, too.
Whew! Perhaps now we will see no more mistakes in talking about such a
classic piece of television.

Ooh Ooh! Almost forgot. You may already know this, But Mr. Yazbek
produced the "Carmen Sandiego" disc of which there has been a bit of
discussion lately. (They Might Be Giants produced themselves, however.)
David also plays and sings on Cherry Cherry.
