Hey, I'm not one of the original old lions -- where did those Sherwood and Coolidge gents wander off to: the Moulding Rest Home? -- but I'll lend a hand to help keep this 'Hill alive if the rest of you will occasionally delurk. You wouldn't have discovered this site if music weren't important in your life. Do you have any stories to share? Mr. Thomas's tale about his girlfriend, Netti, hearing Brian Wilson's *Smile* and asking, "Are they fans of XTC or something?," is a good example of the yarns all of you are probably sitting on which should be shared on this site. Can you spare a moment to compose something? Thanks also to Rob Leary for mentioning that the Atlanta-area XTC tribute band "Nigels With Attitude" is going to open for Riggs at a forthcoming concert. Is this the same Riggs that contributed two songs to the soundtrack of *Heavy Metal*, that Russ Meyer-influenced softcore porn animated sci-fi comedy, around 1980? I took Tracy Angelina's advice in the last Chalkhills after I had read which band Andy Partridge was now inon Todd Bernhardt's excellent blog about XTC songs (which regrettably I rarely read - no offence Todd). I recommend Lighterthief to anyone and it did leave me wantingmore than the mere 3 EPs that are on offer on Apehouse. There's a bit of everything in there including Miles Davis during his "Bitches Brew"/"In a Silent Way" years. What really got me going though was "Up On Hi" - I think this is from the "Trick" EP or maybe it's the "Maximalism" one. Andy was the singer on this and the repeating guitar riff was XTC through and through - it's as if we have an XTC song as of 2009 - could easily have gone on the Wasp Star album (alright, that makes it circa 2000....). I was thinking about the guitar riff and it then occurred to me that it may be the "Stupidly Happy" riff backwards. I don't have the technology to check this out but maybe someone on this list does and can confirm or deny my suspicions. In any event, Up On Hi is one of my favourite Lighterthief songs. Great stuff with a humorous Andy quip at the end. Happy Christmas and a merry new year to all. Simon Deane

While browsing The Onion's AV Club, I came across the XTC content in Noel Murray's "Popless" blog. It's from 2008, so this may have been posted on the Chalkhill last year. http://www.avclub.com/articles/popless-week-46-confession-of-sins,2534/ A little love/hate never hurt anyone.
