 >> Killing time changing planes in Amsterdam, I noticed there's a two-page
interview with Andy Partridge in a Dutch magazine called Heaven. There was a
panel in which he selects his favourite (I guess) records, including Trout
Mask Replica and something by Judee Sill. <<

Here I am, creeping out from under a pile of coconuts to tell you
about an intriguing new web site. It's kind of like radio, but better:

http://www.pandora.com/

It's a fascinating experimental idea for radio, where you can type in
a band or a song or a set of them, and you will instantly get a
custom radio station coming at ya with no talking or ads. The really
interesting thing is they way it plays songs and artists you've never
heard, but might be interested in. So when I added "Kinks XTC Nick
Drake Decemberists The Clash" to my station, I started hearing a mix
of familiar favorites and other songs that are new to me, but that
are interesting to me.

I have no idea how it works. Something about crunching the data from
jillions of listeners, or eddies in the space time continuum (is
he?), or something. Maybe it takes 1.21 jigawatts to run it. I don't
know or care. It's brought back the reason I used to like radio: to
get exposed to new interesting stuff.

Enjoy!

Jim

Judee Sill and others). Can be listened to on demand (with an extra hour
added!). Go to http://www.vpro.nl/gids

so extreme lurker here...
i've been reading chalkhills since.. oh.. 1991-2.
whenever nonsuch came out. a little before that probably...

anyways, i just wanted to add to the fascination that robyn
and andy might work together. they are my two alltime faves
and it just seems too implausible for me to grasp that
they could write songs together. while both are very english...
that's why we like them, yeah? ;) i just don't see them being
compatible. they are both extremely intelligent. but i could
see andy getting on robyn's nerves with fart jokes and
andy getting insulted by robyn trying to mentally circle his head.
i also would think andy wouldn't be able to handle robyn's off the
cuff at times songwriting style. though andy needs this!

but yeah! i hope it works out brilliantly!
personally, i'd love to see colin make a solo album.
and see andy work with other people. he was going to make
a pop record with my friend robert from the apples, but that
disintegrated unfortunately. you always hear of andy writing
with people, but where is the fruit? besides peter blegvad. :)

so i hope i hope i hope!!

Thanks for this link. Looks like it'll be some fun. A few early xtc-era
tid bits. Interesting to see how much corporate backing this particular
"indie" site has. 27 yrs ago wouldn't have expected to see "Carls Jr"
and Steve Jones promoted on the same page. Also I see he interviews
recently Brian Wilson, Billy Bob Thorton, Lisa Marie Presley. There is
another show with an interview of the Ramones...!

My advice would be to start with Captain Fantastic (the last truly
brilliant album Taupin and John made, IMO), then get Honky Chateau
and Tumbleweed Connection.

Hiya,

Quoth Simon:
" I bought `Oranges and Lemons' on CD for the bargain price
of $30 Australian. The same album cost Andy, Colin and Dave $400,000 US.
Would you ever believe in your Art to that extent?"

I'm not sure I understand: Would he believe in his OWN 'ART' that much to
incest it in himself? Or would he pay that much money for an XTC record? Or
for a Picasso?

We pay what we must to get what we want (when we can).

Personally, I pay little extra to get 'Warbles' from the IDEA site and not
from Virgin, but would I do that for myself? Would you?

Sincerely,

don device
(investment couselor)
Todays tip: Buy Warbles for one dollar more than a picasso at name-your-own
virgin store

BTW: I feel as a dedicated consumer of XTC-related merchandise (including
the 'music' product) to recieve high-quality reordings and masterings on
durable material, with a song-list conforming more or less to that on the
disc. That is the minimum. But a boy can dream can't he? (cue music)

PS: Be careful talking about what the 'BAND' spends on making the record.
Usually it's the LABEL (until recently, with the rise of
professional(quality equipment at near-consumer prices), and tey charge a
hell of a lot more to the band than they really spent (renting rehearsal
space to thempselves, and chargin double, etc.. I once found out I was
charged 5 dollars (USo for a coke at a rcording session from a rare itemized
bill)...

Thanks to Shep for bringing this to my attention, I
sorely miss Thousand yard stare, the song in question
is actually called "0-0 AET"

Hi:

With all the talk of Elton John albums, I'm surprised that no one has
mentioned my favorite: 11-17-70, a live album recorded in front of a
small group of fans in the performance studio of WNEW-FM, back when FM
stations still had performance studios and FM was still cool. Verily,
this album rocks the house. It's Elton on piano and vocals, Nigel
Olssen on drums, and Dee Murray on bass. That's it. Playing spare and
raw arrangements, the band is young and hungry, and performs like
nobody's business. Grab it if you can find it.
