David wrote, and I agree:

"the Superbowl halftime entertainment was 'Superbad'.
Janet J has nothing to do with this analysis though.
The greater whole of the program involved re-treads
of music long gone by that sold their million copies
and since should have been retired. What has
  happened to the term 'fresh'?"

However, I do not expect the Super Bowl half time show
to be fresh. It could have a jazz theme or "music of
the civil war" or whatever. I don't even really expect
it to be good. I guess I just don't expect it to be
THAT bad. It was the worst collection of awful crap I
have ever witnessed, and I count the episodes of
American Idol that my family has forced me to watch in
that assessment.

It's really just a manifestation of our current music
scene's lack of, well, everything. I wouldn't be
surprised if next year's super bowl half time show is
much worse.

Amen brother to the Chalker who said that the only
place to find out about good new music is on
Chalkhills.

Sorry if you're suffering through a cold February, but
I'd just like to finish by pointing out how nice and
sunny it's been here in Hawaii lately.

aloha,

Hey, I shared a jacuzzi with Mr T once, him and about ten other people.
All of us except for Mr T were there at the Marriott in Orlando, FL for a
convention, Mr T was a local using the jacuzzi. Hey, I know he's from
Central Florida, he was wearing his usual leopard print briefs and mandinka
hair cut, had to be him.

Heard "I'd Like That" playing on the speakers at Giant Food last night.
:)

I don't know why they call it Giant Food. It all looked actual size to
me.

Then came this from my dear friend Andy in SoCal:

OK, I could not let this one pass. Normally I am just a lurker here, but
Paul has brought me out of the closet!!!

>>readers please note, nothing to do with Michael Jackson's one!

Andy was my first trader thru Chalkhills; I'm still reaping the benefits
from the great material he recorded for me. Plus, he sent me a copy of the
special "ammonite" edition of "Fossil Fuel", among many other fine gifts and
gestures. He said some really nice and touching things about me, which I
really don't deserve. But Andy is every bit, and more, what he said I was.
Mr Cuthbert is a champion! Thank you buddy, you're a great bloke, and you
got the spelling right ;^)

I just hope I get to shake his hand one more time!

Then, Ben chimed in with:

Chalk-kids,

The folks at Apple just put Stephen Duffy's "I Love My Friends" on the
iTunes Music Store. Yes, yes. I've been delinquent in buying it, and
it's an incredible album. If you have been delinquent too, you should
get it NOW. I can't believe I waited so long!

Glad you finally succumbed Benny. And here's the obligatory XTC content
(such as it is): The album Ben refers to, is, IMO, an essential purchase
for all XTC and "power-pop" aficcionados. This one features guest
appearances from Aimee Mann, Ric Menck, Blur's Alex James, among others.
But in case XTC completists are unaware, there are two songs produced by
Andy Partridge, on which AP plays bass, "string machine" and sings backing
vox, with Dave Mattacks as drummer. The songs are "You Are" and "What If I
Fell In Love With You?" And they are pearlers.

Thank you Ben for bringing this to our attention. As he recommends, seek
out Duffy's "I Love My Friends"!

-as I do. Paul

hi everyone

here is my story:

i liked her a lot. since 7th grade, i had been infatuated with her.
nothing ever happened as i was a nerdy, shy uber-geek. numerous relocations
and six years later, i was living near daytona beach florida and lo and
behold, Sherrie's parents also took the 800 mile plunge and moved into the
same area.

she worked at a local record store and i went to see her a few times. i
sort of figured out that nothing was going to happen but, you have those
insane thoughts in the back of your head... well, it might work... she might
like me... and so on. after browsing around a while and making small talk,
i got the feeling nothing EVER was going to come of this. having a few
extra dollars in my pocket, i thought i would buy something anyways to
soothe the wounds. so what do i do? i ask her to recommend something.

now i was around 17 or 18 at the time. i listened to hair metal, classic
rock and lots of prince. she gives me two cassette tapes: Ministry's "Land
of Rape and Honey" and "Skylarking". i was happy to have something out of
the whole episode, even if it was not a date... hell, she picked out two
tapes for me! heh heh, what a schmuck!

so i get home and play ministry first. HOLY SH*T did that tape just suck!
i put xtc on. i made it through half the first side. i pitched both of the
tapes into a box. they did not see the light of day for a while.

a year or so later, i am working in a record store (a different one).
Oranges and Lemons was released. one of the managers at work just kept
playing all the time. heyyyyyyyy.... i like this. i listen to it more and
more and i finally buy that one myself. damn, this sounds good. i want to
see them in concert. are they going to tour? ahhh!!!!! they have not
toured in 7 years, but they are going to play David Letterman. i stay up to
watch it and dammit if i don't fall asleep.

sometime in the midst of all this Oranges and Lemons hoo-ha, i realize that
i have skylarking on cassette. i play it. and play it. and play it. i
read the lyrics... i learn the words, they touch my soul.

over the next year or so, i buy all the xtc i can find. in the last 3
years, i buy all the xtc records i can find. i am addicted.

to this day, skylarking is my favorite album.

so that is my story. hokey, sappy and ultimatlely, a little late into the
xtc club...but better late than never.

any other interesting stories out there? i would love to hear them...i
think a lot of us would.

all the best,

thomas

and i still hate that ministry tape... but i like all their others.

You should also know that eMusic.com has a ton of
SpinArt groups, including Duffy, and a vast collection
to choose from.

Different subscriptions available starting at 40 songs
per month at $9.95. A little cheaper than Apple even
though I would prefer you give your money to them.

Your choice.

Hey everyone...
I really love "Didn't hurt a bit" and I was wondering if someone could work
out the chords to it.
It's just that the lyrics really chime with what I'm going through at the
moment...
cheers,

mix?

Funny you mention that. I just got my copy of the remastered Oranges &
Lemons, and upon first listen to "King For A Day" I, like you, was
completely shocked by the presence of the woodblock. At first I thought they
accidentally placed one of the remixes on there, but upon further review,
it's the same mix as what we were previously accustomed to.

Which brings up the question: has anyone else noticed any unknown sounds on
the new remasters that you hadn't heard before in such clarity? I have to
say that the fidelity is outstanding on all I've heard so far (O&L, ES, and
D&W). The endings and fade outs on D&W alone were revealing. It's like
removing a wet towel from the speakers...

Hi there,

I'm a singer-songwriter based in Cambridge (the one in England) who is
heavily influenced by XTC, and a lurker on this list. Anyway, I will
be playing a set this Friday with my backing band. I think it's fair
to say that my sound & style are heavily influenced by everyone's
favorite Swindown-based recording collective (esp Black Sea/English
Settlement period...). I will even be covering an XTC song - what more
reason do you need to come along?

It's at Newnham College Bar, Sidgwick Avenue, Cambridge, UK, on Friday
27th Feb at 9:00 pm, free entry. The first half of the set is
acoustic, the second half with my backing band. Please come down!

Apologies for the lack of relevant content...

Yours,
