I hope Andy gets something out of it. For anyone here who saw the ... three, was it? ... episodes that aired before Fox pulled the plug, it was a really good show that wasn't given nearly enough time to find it's audience. A sad trait in American TV these days. JK

Actually "Persuasion" was an instrumental that Thompson wrote for the
soundtrack to a film (I have the soundtrack somewhere). Tim heard the music,
loved it and asked if he could write a lyric to it. Don't know if this was
when they were touring together or not. Thompson's original instrumental
version isn't available anymore although it's a fine album and well worth
picking up as it includes a couple of Thompson songs (one of which he
doesn't sing) that aren't available anywhere else.
Dunks mentioned that the Finn Brothers album might be out. In the US I
believe the release date is 8/24. It's reportedly has an entire band
supporting them on it. I, too, saw them play but at the Filmore in San
Francisco. It was just Neil and Tim playing all the instruments and, yes,
they were incredible. Unfortunately, I missed them when they played here in
July of this year and am hoping that they come back this way again.
I personally find all four of their studio albums (and even the odds and
ends album released after they broke up)to have enough strong material to
make them all worthwhile. Personal favs, though, include the first,
"Woodface" and "Together Alone". "Recurring Dream" just doesn't do them
justice as it skips many of the finest album tracks but it is a good place
to start (particularly now that it has been reissued with the DVD featuring
all the videos the band made).
Don't know if there are any Kinks fans here or not but I'm sad to report
that Dave Davies suffered a stroke that left him paralyized on one side of
his body. Evidently he had the stroke while promoting his latest album "Bug"
in July.
I'd also recommend that great album by the other brother band that
matters-The Kinks. "Village Green Preservation Society" has been reissued as
a great 3 CD set featuring the album entirely in stereo, mono and with a
third disc consisting of BBC tracks, recordings made for but not used on
"Village Green" (many of which ended up on b-sides of singles or on "The
Great Lost Kinks Album").
Also worth noting the reissue of the Godley & Creme catalog. Always been a
10cc fan (although their albums after Godley & Creme left fell victim to the
law of dimishing returns with the exception of two really strong albums) and
have always seen a 10cc/XTC type of connection there. Always loved "L",
"Freeze Frame" , "Goodbye Blue Sky" and parts of "Birds of Prey". Beyond
"Cry" didn't care for "The History Mix Volume One" album at all.
"Consequences" has its moments as well although it's a pity overblown. The
first two 10cc albums have been reissued (yet again!) but this time the
right way. The UK Sessions (I believe that's what it's called) has their
first two brilliant albums along with all the b-sides and single edits from
the same time frame. Great stuff. Any clue on "Fuzzy Warbles 5 & 6"? Yes, I
also have to know which of the two Dukes went to see Brian Wilson (although
if I had to guess Dave Gregory and Andy would be my pick knowing what huge
Wilson fans they are).

Homegrown and the Apple Venus albums are available, as are select tracks from Testimonial Dinner. You have to be a full-fledged Real member to buy and burn to CD, but you can get a 14-day free trial. I had previously decided not to buy Homegrown, but for $5, I couldn't resist. Message-ID: <4C051D49-F0C2-11D8-8A83-000A95AE7A42@mac.com> Fellow humans, and other life-forms, Old-timers on this list (those of you without form can read along, too) will recall that I used to post here much more frequently. Well. I just kinda slacked off. I think I've gotten too addicted to the instantaneous (comparatively) response of message boards, and waiting for a Chalkhills digest has gotten, well, like waiting for the actual mail-- an anachronism of sorts. Who would have thought in 1993 that ANYTHING to do with the intarnet would ever begin to seem anachronistic? But you know, hey, I'm an XTC fan, so that makes me predisposed to anachronistic tendencies anyway, so here I am, crawling back every few months, sort of out of habit. About 230 years ago (in internet years), I posted that I and some friends of mine were starting an XTC tribute project, then, abject silence. Well, that's because we got in over our heads. We had personnel problems for the first nine months, with lead-singer changes, and a multi-instrumentalist (you know, the Glue Guy) who REALLY WANTED to be in the band, but cancelled four out of five practices for almost 4 months. We still rehearse nearly every Monday night, but none of us had any clue just how insanely difficult some of the material we were taking on was going to actually be to arrange, and then really nail down RIGHT. And then, as we were finally ready to declare ourselves ready to book a gig, our very own Chalkhillian Joe Funk had to undergo shoulder surgery. So. Let us all wish him a speedy recovery, because A) he's a really nice guy who has been in a lot of pain, and B) we really would like to play in a club some day. In the meantime, I've been working on a few other things, as well, one of which is Radio Tejas. Yup, totally pirate, served off of my home computer, using iTunes and a spiffy program called Nicecast. It's not on the air all the time, but it's on a majority of the time, featuring about 3000 songs (more added whenever I feel like it) usually on random, unless you want to catch me on AIM (devilsrancher) and make requests. Occasionally, I'll declare a theme, like commie-rock night, or an all-Kevin Gilbert festival. Of course, XTC figures prominently. The Whore$ was a 3 piece art-punk-funk-what band that never really caught on. We were too artsy and sarcastic for the punks, and we were too punky and sarcastic for the New Sincerity crowd that ruled Austin in those days. Mostly, we were too sarcastic. The 2-inch 24 track sat in my closet gathering dust until two years ago when I had to have it baked (Screw you, Ampex) in order to transfer it from the crumbling tape to hard disk via Pro Tools. I thereupon set out on the Herculean task of learning to operate Logic Audio well enough to mix the basic tracks down. Well, just yesterday, I declared the dumb thing done.
