I think it is as catchy as Wonderfalls. Great stuff! Andy reports in the liner notes that it was the song so nice they rejected it twice. First it was offered for the "Great Train Robbery Film 'Buster'" and then to Hanks & Co. Now go to the Ape site and buy FW3!!!! Back in March Ryko released "Afterlife" which is a live CD from
the last 3 JJ shows on the reunion tour ( I was at the Fillmore show
... he covered "Mayor of Simpleton" and fucked up the turnaround to
the third verse; that didn't make the cut).
Great album with live takes from the "4" album and songs from "Big
World" and other records ... get it!

The song Andy submitted was "My Train Is Coming", and, like Rudgren or Neil Innes' efforts, it's an eerily accurate pastiche of 1964 British beat music - or as Andy himself describes it, it's all of "A Hard Day's Night" rolled into one song. He has made at least three different demo treatments of this tune over the years, one of which (the most 'polished') is the lead-off track on Fuzzy Warbles Vol 3. >P.S.: If Mr. Partridge were to release an album of "all these songs about a fucking peach," I'd buy it. Well Ryan, as a consolation prize, some of these Giant Peach songs have already made it to the Warbles series, and no doubt the full batch will be included on future FWs. I mention this because I have a mate who's a Deadhead who'd never struck reference to this site before and is now drooling in anticipation at what he can download. Ain't broadband a marvelous thing? If we're playing six degrees of Phil Collins here: Andy writes "My Train Is Coming" for the Phil Collins Great Train Robbery film "Buster" and the song is rejected for Phil's remake of "Groovy Kind Of Love". Andy re-records "My Train Is Coming" in a Help! / Rubber Soul period Beatles style for "That Thing You Do" and the song is rejected again. The Phil Collins Version is on "The Bull With The Golden Guts" cassette and also opens Fuzzy Warbles Volume 3. The later version will probably show up later on. There's also a live-rehearsal version floating around in demo land. Opening myself to flaming:- I usually love Andy's work. (I even love both the unfairly maligned Here Comes President Kill Again and Bumper Cars). But this song is a natural born b-side (like the equally ploddy and lifeless "Goosey Goosey"). It's trying to be a big party but sounds more like an uninvited nerdy kid watching the next door neighbour's party for the more popular through a window while letting that air out of a slowly deflating balloon. And i've heard three different versions in two different styles! Anyway: The vocals on "That Thing You Do" are provided by Mike Viola of the Candy Butchers, who co-wrote the song with Adam Schlesinger. If you enjoy the song, check out the Candy Butchers' albums, in particular 2002's "Play With Your Head" for Michael Penn style power pop goodness. It's easily as catchy as Fountains of Wayne, with the Annoying Irony Factor replaced with Costello-style Vitriol. Now if I could just find their new album "Hang On Mike" which i've been looking for since January... has anyone seen this?

You see, I posted summat that might have embarrassed some parties, and I hope Relphie might have been able to pull it before publishment. If not, my profound apologies to those who might be red-faced and pissed off... Here's something kinda cute though... A very favourite TV series of mine is "Monarch Of The Glen", it's produced by BBC-Scotland and screened here in Australia on Saturday evenings. It's lovely. Anyway, in the current screenplay we're getting, there's a young bloke called Ewan, the chef (played by Martin Compston). He seems to be one of those endearing tearaways. But get this: in two episdes so far he has blatantly sported a wonderful t-shirt with the Uffington Horse across his chest (exactly like that on "English Settlement"). Did he buy that shirt off Phil Corless??? I was chuff(ington)ed to see that... And, yeah, I mean no harm - "peace & love" is me. As Johnny L. was wont to say to Paully McC.: "it's only me..." Paul
