Andy claims they actually forgot to do a part 4, and didn't realize
they'd skipped it until a listener pointed it out!  He says they
then went back, tails between legs, to fill in the gap, but weren't
very happy with the results.  He says "Mantis" is his least favorite
part of the series.

This and much more information comes to you from a phone interview,
parts of which were aired on a KFJC special, but which has never
been reproduced in its entirety, and which I promise to transcribe
as a Chalkhills exclusive Real Soon Now (TM).

      One question : What is all this about a  "Safari" sequence of
tunes from XTC?  I've heard of these songs before, and have even
heard a couple, but this is the first I've heard of any connection or
some such.  Any info???

      OK, a couple more questions.  For one thing, does anyone know
if this release of *Compact XTC* (and I'd be happy about it had I
not finally sprung for the import in December) is just a one-time
sort of thing, or if Virgin is finally getting plans together to
re-release more of the older stuff on CD?  And if they're not
sure yet, how can we pester them to change their mind?  =)

     Also -- somebody talked about the Black Sea Tour thing as being
the only 'live' XTC we'll hear... well, as far as I know, several
people have recorded the in-studio concerts of last year (including
myself), and that there was a plan of some sort circulating for
some sort of distribution for those on this list who want.  Any
more info??

Subject: Generals & Majors Live, complete Drums & Wires CD?

Howdy folks,
    Just a couple of replies (one extremely belated):
(1) The 'Generals & Majors/Living Through Another Cuba' medley seems to have
been a staple of the live show, when there was one.  It appears on several
bootlegs, as well as the aforementioned BBC College Concert disk, the
b-side of the Sgt. Rock double-pack 7", and a Japanese mini-lp called
"XTC: Live and More".  (The mini-lp version is the same as the one on Sgt.
Rock, the BBC recording is a different performance).

(2) I finally checked out the previously mentioned "Drums & Wires" CD spotted
at Main Street Records (in Northampton, MA).  The booklet is the same as
the one on the UK CD version, but the track listing on the back of the
jewel box is clearly a new addition.  It lists 15 tracks, in order, including
Life Begins at the Hop, Day In, Day Out, Limelight, and Chain of Command.
If I didn't already own both the original US LP version (with 'Life') and
the import CD, I might buy it.  As is, I can't justify the expense ($18 or
so, as I recall) just to get 'Life...' on CD.  If you don't already own
both, run out and buy it! :-)

"I had a dream last night
 I forgot what it was".

Actually, I had a dream last night that Andy was upset about the bootleg
CD of _Making Plans for Andy_, because it contained some material that
he was embarrassed by.  Andy and Colin were running around the country
trying to prevent the distribution of the aforementioned CD.

Where is my mind going these days?

re: Great Fire, I hear "but it's never been as hot as this SMOKE curling
round the door..", nothing else.

I went back and listened to my Mummer that was gathering dust, and
it was worth it, especially to hear Colin's songs.  For some reason,
"Deliver us from the elements" really grabbed me on this listen.

Another subject:  Have XTC *ever* performed any of their early songs
after Barry left.  In concerts when they did "some oldies" for encores,
it never went back before Drums & Wires.  Did they just dump the old
songs after the Barry/Dave switch?
